The word “apothecary” reeled her in like a desperate madman at the other end of a pole. Without even giving warning or a proper greeting, Nabi’s mouth erupted words. "Please!” she screamed. "My cyndaquil!”[break][break]

In her arms lied a small, fireless mouse, cheeks hazy purple and breath raspy. The cyndaquil barley made a whimper.[break][break]

"You can save him, can’t you!” It wasn’t a question. She demanded of the green-haired gentleman to save her poor pokemon from its suffering.

elijah's hands were already full. literally (with a stack of ceramic planters). maybe metaphorically too—at least, he pretends. pretends that there is an overgrowth of duty and errand so thick and unruly in his day to day life so that others' business can be denied.[break][break]

but the woman and her cyndaquil express such desperation that eyes are drawn to his humble stall. elijah grumbles, his stiff lip unmoving.[break][break]

he sets his planters down and calls for his TANGROWTH to wrap the stall in makeshift walls of vine: privacy for the lady and her raspy rat.[break][break]

The man’s attitude tips Nabi off immediately, despite her growing anxiety. This guy is a jerk. She bit down on her bottom lip and practically shoved the sick and helpless Poppy into his chest. ”Doesn’t matter what I did,” she retorted, clearly peeved that he jumped to blaming her for her pokemon’s declining health. ”I didn’t do anything,” she added as confirmation, for him and for herself.[break][break]

The truth was that Poppy had ran ahead, excited and adventurous, straight into a group of gulpin in the middle of their dinner. When Nabi caught up, she was covered in purple ooze. She had cleaned most of it off of Poppy after getting them away from the gulpin. The purple stains on her clothes and hands were a testament to that, but that didn’t clear Poppy of the poison that remained inside. ”She’s important to me, so you better heal her, or I’ll kick your ass,” Nabi said, her breath now up to speed.[break][break]

Somewhere in the background, a jolly old man sang out "HO HO HO!"

elijah repeats with more spit. he clicks his tongue against the back of his front teeth. on his lips, a small smile of incredulity cracks.[break][break]

at the same time, he catalogues colors. sound. symptoms.[break][break]

"poison then." elijah lifts a heavy and long planter from the ground and sets it on the counter. he pats the orange clay. "lay your cyndaquil in it.".[break][break]

his fingers grip the edge of the planter tight.[break][break]

"i can't guarantee your cyndaquil will be saved." elijah glares. "you get that yeah? i won't ask twice."[break][break]

Nabi wasn't happy with his reply. She wasn't going to be happy with anything less than 100%. Still, she was powerless in this situation. It all depended on this grumpy man's skills. She hated having to depend on others.[break][break]

She turned obedient and quiet like a child scolded by their mother. Gently, she placed Poppy into the planter, her small, curled-up body easily fitting in. "Just do whatever you can to save her," Nabi sighed, eyes still on Poppy.[break][break]

The Parks were trained to let go of their emotions. They needed to be cutthroat, ruthless. Attachements were nothing but burdens to the Park clan.[break][break]

Nabi had always been different. She wasn't like them. But still, she refused to cry. Her face hardened, just in case. Just in case she lost someone precious.

"nuh uh, you're not getting out of this that easy." elijah tosses a small bag of soil to nabi. "pour it into the planter. don't bury your cyndaquil. she's not dead yet."[break][break]

he pulls out another sack of garden soil. tears the corner apart with his teeth like a mightyena. grumbling, he begins to pour the cold bulk around the sick cyndaquil's pathetic form.[break][break]

his tangrowth murmurs. a vine coils around them and settles into the dirt. the green glows as it begins to siphon poisons.[break][break]

"huh." elijah says. "really thought you'd be the crying type."[break][break]

Nabi blinked, confused when the bag of soil landed in her hands. It took her a moment register what the specialist had said, though once she understood, she quickly ripped at the bag, uncaring of where the ripped piece ended up, and tipped it over her cyndaquil. The soil came out fast an uneven, so Nabi adjusted herself to ensure it didn't all pile up in one mound.[break][break]

When the bag empited, she let it drop from her hands and finally exhaled. "I don't cry," she replied haughtily. "Around people."[break][break]

Her fingers twitched when she felt the empty space in the pocket of her coat. "...I don't have any money." She swallowed hard but looked straight at the green-haired man.

nabi had no money and elijah had no patience. yet, the apothecary was neck-deep in his work. he had crossed the point of no return when the soil bags had been torn.[break][break]

even then, he would not confess the tear in his own heart as the cyndaquil struggles for breath.[break][break]

"no money?" elijah's hands smooth the soil, cool dirt crumbling richly through his fingers. "you ever worked for an apothecary before?"[break][break]

he raises a stern brow.[break][break]

"i don't know if i can trust someone who'd get their pokemon hurt like this to run to the bank and back."[break][break]

despite his brutish approach, the cyndaquil seems to settle into some sense of ease. his tangrowth's vines proliferate with one wrapping around the fire mouse itself.

"Well, me running to the bank isn't a concern..." Nabi spoke softly, the edges of her mouth crooked and nervous. "Can't go to a bank to withdraw money when I don't have an account to pull from." She raised both eyebrows and offered a shrug. It was her way of proving she had practically nothing to her name. After all, it was only just a few days ago since she had decided to run away from home and start anew in Hoenn.[break][break]

"So, if it serves as any last consolation... no, I have no experience with apothecary. But I like flowers." However, if he was willing to negotiate alternatives, she was more than happy to oblige. Experience or not, Nabi had no intentions of leaving him dry after saving her cyndaquil. She was cold enough to steal money from others, but repaying a debt was in her blood.[break][break]

"Listen," she then sighed, feeling exhausted from all of the emotions and the running and everything else life was throwing her way in the prime of her twenties. "I'll repay you. Whatever you want done, I'll do it. Name your price."

the tangrowth responds to nabi park's gratitude by rustling its vines. each leafy tendril shakes like a twirling yarn mop being squeezed of muck.[break][break]

"kari's vines plant itself in the soil." elijah says, cracking his neck side to side. "sucks the poison out and squeezes it into the dirt where it's neutralized. ugh, dunno what to compare it to. yogurt tubes? a shitting intestine? whatever."[break][break]

elijah sighs. his breath is heavy, but loose. relief finds his slackening shoulders while he grabs a green garden trowel.[break][break]

"been meaning to ask... how'd you find me?" he does not look at her as he shovels contaminated soil into a bag marked for disposal. "not saying you shouldn't have come. i'm the best in this shithole city... but i'm usually not someone's first choice."

"i was just running around frantic asking for someone to help me. some older lady pointed me to your direction," she explained. "she said you're pretty good at your job. i didn't catch her name." nabi looked up to his face. "she also mentioned i'd know i was in the correct place if the man has a perpetual grumpy scowl."[break][break]

a skilled apothecary, vibrant green hair, a hardened exterior--he checked off all the boxes, so she was sure she had come to the right place.[break][break]

"...you're still a pretty handsome guy!" nabi suddenly added in, thinking that perhaps he wouldn't take well to insults, and she wasn't in a position to poke fun at him. "and i saw you smile a little earlier," she lied. though she could see why he may not be sought after. her eyes wandered the stall then, noting the different pots, plants, materials, and other assortments of tools that made up his business.

somehow, the old saw right through elijah. or they lived through so much already that his prickly persona did little to phase them.[break][break]

he rolls his eyes. pupils cling to the ceiling of his lids as he flips through weathered, slateport-sun beaten faces.[break][break]

elijah is quick to dismiss the compliment. no words. just the stubborn arching of a stern, stiff brow. he grumbles, voice like disturbed rubble.[break][break]

"you're imagining things." the apothecary says. [break][break]

a squeak springs from the planter. the cyndaquil stirs, shaking dirt from its small body. flames return to the mouse's back. and like a curtain unveiling the magic trick, tangrowth vines recede.[break][break]

"there. the picture of perfect health." elijah says. "come back on the weekend. i'll be waiting. don't double cross me now."
