His soul feels the weight of near fifty years. His body feels the ache of thirty. It has been a long year. The coming year with its portents of ruination promises to be longer still.[break][break]
The end of the year brings with it evaluations, discussions, assessments. It brings him face to face with the commissioner of the League he has sworn to defend. Goode, true to her name, is a good soul. It’s hard to muster the same ire for her that he can for FERNANDO SILPH, her longstanding councilman. There’s a reason she is the face of the government and he its quiet specter.[break][break]
“Pleasure to be here, Commissioner.” He offers her a pleasantry accentuated by a soft, genuine smile. “Sorry ‘bout all the complaints you probably get. ‘Bout my gym, I mean.” He’s harsh, rough, reckless with the trainers who challenge him. “Better me than Rocket.” Better a taste of harsh truth than the bite of Cillian Quinn’s knife.

she waves her hand. a gentle feather in the air dismissing gloom. rather, dahlia seems to acknowledge its shape, feeling how it clings to her palm.[break][break]

“Worked three, once.” A lifetime ago, when he had the energy for that. Anything for his brother, to keep food on the table, to suffer in silence so he could have Christmas presents and a normal life.[break][break]
“Hated all three. Two jobs I like? One where I get to be around Melody a good chunk of the day?” That, at least, makes him smile. Melody Miro has her own struggles, and he would give anything to help her through them. “I can handle that.”[break][break]
And if that was where it ended, they’d probably have a nice chat. Discuss details of the inauguration, maybe he could talk her into celebrating with a drink. Dahlia deserves one as much as anyone, if not more.[break][break]
But it doesn’t end there. A specter haunts his dreams. He has dived into the void for this woman and her League.[break][break]
“I’d like to voice some concerns though, as Dewford’s rep here at League HQ.” The smile fades. Back to that grim expression. She charged him to defend his town, so there are things he must say as its defender. “About Eternatus.”

“Know I’m probably just repeating what other people have said,” he begins, knowing how often this woman must hear the same impossible problems presented to her day after day, hour after hour, “but we’re playing with fire. Us, and Rocket. Know most of the ore’s been mined in the core, but that just means Rocket’s gonna get bolder to try and grab what they can.” A moment to breathe, to remember a poisoned faraway sky, where he served other rulers.[break][break]
“That dream of Galar everyone lived through, think that could end up being us. Not a scientist. Heck, I’ve got an eighth grade education, got no proof of this, but I think we’re playing into His hand.” Exasperation leaks in near the end. He understands her as he says it in a way he thinks he could never have Ulysses Monroe.[break][break]
“And nobody’s going to see that, or they’re gonna tell themselves they must do it to keep up with Rocket. Rocket’ll just do it ‘cause they wanna win. Then the sky’s gonna turn purple. We’ll all have to work together to keep the world from ending.” A small pause, followed by candor he feels she deserves.[break][break]
"Funny. Last year, I was a private detective. Thought to myself, how hard could the jobs up top be?" A dry laugh. "How little I knew, huh?"

impossible would be the word to describe it. the jobs at the top. the summit of the league, where the view is simultaneously sublime and inconcievable. though one may believe the peak to offer the most elucidatory purview, such expectations are folly.[break][break]

hoenn and everything within it is an unfathomable, ever-changing paradox. to attempt to comprehend every moving part of this region is to attempt to comprehend the impossible.[break][break]

and to be in a high seat such as this, whether it be the elite four's or the comissioner's, to grant the absurd audience.[break][break]

"it's an arms race, navidson." dahlia leaves her seat to look out tall windows. "the league has the region's brightest minds, but i am not so naive as to say that rocket isn't already at work to seize any advantage they can get."[break][break]

she peers back at the man.[break][break]

"what do you think will bring about the world's end?" hoennian waves beat and pulse against the island. "eternatus?"

“This arms race is a race to the bottom.” Perhaps softer words would serve, but his commissioner deserves honesty. “Think He’s got a big part to play. Even if He doesn’t end the world, waking Eternatus up would probably end with Dewford being destroyed.” And there are some, colder men who see life as a numbers game, who would say things could be worse. Eternatus could be threatening Slateport, Lilycove, or Mauville instead of one small town on the edge of Hoenn’s jurisdiction.[break][break]
“I’m scared everyone’s poisoning the land. If Pokemon start randomly dynamaxing, or if those poison tera crystals spread…” He’s no scientist, nothing he says will have any basis in logos. All he knows is what pathos and ethos would say on the matter. “…heh. I sound like one of those prophets you see on street corners with their signs.” He tries to put on a brave face, smile for her.[break][break]
