The first thing he senses is the touch of warm scales on his palm. The steady breathing of the beast he rides upon. The vibrations of its curious trill as it sweeps its gaze to and fro. They're in a vast grassy clearing with a lush noisy jungle ot their south and a glorious prehistoric canyon to their north. After Remiel has opened his eyes to soak all of it in, he turns to find freya morningstar upon a CYCLIZAR just as large as his own.[break][break]

"If I had to guess, I'd say we're about 65 million years in the past," He says, lifting the back of his hand to wipe some sweat off his forehead. If an apex predator didn't kill him, the humidity here was sure to try. "Or, at least, a representation of the idea." The nature of reality seemed to be shifting as of late constantly.[break][break]

Shifting his gaze towards the beautiful horizon in the west, Remiel takes a moment to appreciate the splendor of this ancient sunset.[break][break]

"It's beautiful though, isn't it?"[break][break]

Except, of course, for the looming volcano to the east.

it always gives her a startling sense of vertigo. she blinks and suddenly her palms are splayed against the back of a swaying lizard, legs pumping underneath her, brushing ferns against her calves. to her left is the crown prince, the man she'd asked to take the dive with her.

there are still pieces of it that don't make sense to her. two days ago, she had one name, a name she finally believed she deserved, and now she has another. she feels a stranger in her own skin, some other freya without a living, breathing family.

the cyclizar turns at her command and she rides closer to remiel, following his gaze out to the simulated universe around them. she does not share his appreciation. the lava is as made up as the rest of it, but that will not make the pain any less unbearable. it will not make their deaths feel any less real.

"in there," she says and points.

The skies above began to darken with greater intensity. The relentless barrage of magma did not let up. Around them, the entire world seemed to be burning. Wild Pokémon of all sizes, shapes, and types, fled in every direction. Many of them found themselves perishing in the flame that had already consumed most of the jungle.[break][break]

Freya had the right idea of retreating into a nearby cave. Once they've entered far enough to assure their safety from the hell-storm outside, Remiel dismounts his Cyclizar. He almost suggests making camp or finding another way out before, suddenly, he registers a strange feeling in the air. Rolling up his sleeve, he finds goosebumps running down the length of his forearm.[break][break]

"There's something in here..." He mutters, casting a look down one particular tunnel. "That way. I can feel it." It was vaguely familiar, but he couldn't quite put a finger on what just yet. "Do you feel it, too?"[break][break]

the cyclizar shake out their limbs, tongues lolling out of their mouths. they resemble overgrown lizards more than they do dragons and she sniffs petulantly as she follows remiel, hands clasped behind her back. the bodies they'd seen succumbing the bubbling magma hadn't phased her.

none of this is real.

her skin prickles. the air is hot and acrid; nothing like the wetness that permeates the ultra deep sea, but the feeling is unmistakable. she licks chapping lips and casts a glance at remiel, nodding.

"eternatus." her voice comes out softer than she means and she grits her teeth. the cyclizar follow dutifully behind them as they march deeper into the cave.

light blooms and she raises a hand, wincing through the gaps in her fingers. gaps that glow orange against her skin, a sunset growing in her palm. she has never been scared of the dark, but the idea of it now frightens her and she makes a strangled sound, shutting her hand tight into a fist, seeing stars on the edge of her vision all the same.

Or, to be precise, a fragment of it: a WISHING STAR. They find it embedded within a cave wall at the end of the tunnel, emitting a powerful and otherworldly light. Its presence, now unmistakable, weighs on his mind like a living nightmare with no end.[break][break]

"What will it become here..." Remiel utters, sweeping his gaze across the rest of the chamber it inhabits. "I saw a WISHING STAR form REGIROCK in another simulation. Could this be a prelude to another REGI? If so, which one?"[break][break]

Suddenly, he's not so sure of his idea. It could all be a red herring, he thought. He might be inventing answers where there were none. When asked if he sees an exit, the prince shakes his head.[break][break]

"I see nothing but shadows."

Shadows that seemed to be growing and expanding all around them. Until, eventually, their entire world goes dark and the simulation shifts to another.[break][break]

she turns her head to see the crown prince backlit by his home region. grief stirs within her at the familiar sight, but somehow this feels more real than her flyaway memories, stamped over with prints of her thumbs held too tight.

"do you remember?" she says. "were you there all those years, remiel?"

she remembers their howls, their call to arms, and she remembers the aftermath. she remembers the forgetting. and the endless, painful scratching of ink to journal, scarlet dribbling from her nose, a cosmic desire to bear witness to things that had not happened yet and would not happen.

"were you there when we fought?" she says as she grasps the hilt of the sword.

He's back here again: his war-torn home under the terror of ETERNATUS. It's a cycle they seem doomed to repeat. The snake eats its own tail over and over again, helpless to unwind itself from its fate. So, of course, the crown prince's first instinct is to grab the SWORD and cut the venomous cycle off at its head.[break][break]

No more regret.[break][break]

Just DECISIVE ACTION.

His hand stops short from grabbing its hilt, however, when Freya's eloquent voice graces his ears once more. He turns over his shoulder to look at her then, though not entirely. It's almost as if he's hiding something shameful. "Bits and pieces," Remiel responds, subconsciously reaching for the arm he'd lost in that ALTERNATE GALAR.[break][break]

"The memory has faded, but I know I had an entire life there... that I became the KING my father hoped I would be."[break][break]

His hues of cobalt blue shift as he watches her step forward, choosing to grab the hilt on her own. Shedding the aura of guilt draped over his shoulders, the royal steps forward to help her pull the sword from the stone. "Is it strange that the WAR is what I remember most?"[break][break]

it slides cleanly from the stone and as memories of the past drift over remiel's skin, so too do they drift over freya's. the weight of her shortsword on her hip is a decades-old comfort, though its sheen is silver and not the obsidian black from necrozma's body.

"no, i don't think so," she says as she lifts her gaze. the sight is achingly familiar. her heart races. she is reminded, again, of her failings - all the ways she'd ruined KING WAYLAND's life by dragging him along with her. all the ways she'd hurt him again, when it was over.

and above, in the heavens, is the world-ender.

zacian charges forward in a blur of blue and gold. the edges of the dreamscape are turning gray. their time in the book is nearly up, but her heart is pounding. they have to see the fight through. they have to know what happens when it's beaten.

"because it always comes back to war. one day, when we're done fighting, maybe we'll better remember the rest."

From the stone emerges ZACIAN the CROWNED SWORD, just as Remiel had imagined it from the storybooks his nanny used to read to him before bed. Oh, how many times he had wished to bond with it as a child. To fight in a war, just like this, and emerge from it as a timeless hero of GALAR.[break][break]

He'd never considered the cost of such a war, however. The weight of the crown that his forebearers had worn for centuries. He'd been naive, and fate had conspired to grant him a whole lifetime in that ALTERNATE GALAR to realize that in full.[break][break]

Spurred on by the ZACIAN's presence, ZEKROM emerges from its ball in a flash of electrifying light. Yes, Remiel thinks as he swiftly mounts his patron's shoulder. This is entirely too familiar...[break][break]

He's snapped out of his thoughts by Freya's next statement, however. "I would like to..." The royal responds, looking down at his open palm with a solemn look before it steadily begins to manifest a crackling LIGHTNING BOLT he can grab.[break][break]

"We've been fighting for a long time, Freya. But I'll keep fighting a while longer to see my IDEAL WORLD through." He determinedly adds.[break][break]

"It can't have all been for nothing."[break][break]

And, with that, ZACIAN and ZEKROM take to the skies to combat the world-eater.
