With her wounds mostly healed, Shalin felt comfortable signing up for the Vital City Tournament, if only to improve her combat skills. The war had made her realize how inadequate they were. She much preferred Ranger work, though as a Captain, she couldn't exactly pick her tasks.

The sheer efficiency that the tournament's healing machines operated at was a marvel of the event: they worked faster than ones at most Pokémon Centers, making sure the Pokémon were all in top shape for each round. This was going to be a long day: battle after battle. With them being only one Pokémon per side, at the very least they would be quick. As Shalin was sipping on a bottle of water, an announcement blared over the venue's loudspeakers:

"Attention all Vital City Tournament participants. Pairings are up for round four. Pairings are up for round four."

Pulling up the list on her phone, she scrolled down to her name and found her opponent and her assigned arena number. That opponent was seiichi yukimura .

Shalin took her place on her assigned side of the battleground. "Good luck to you!" the Captain waved. "Don't recognize you from anywhere! Captain Shalin Nariya of Rustboro."

it seemed elodie had come to hoenn at the right time!

she had just barely steped onto hoenn ground when she learned about the event, and, to her, there was no better way to get her name known than to try it out for herself! sure, she wasn't the best at battling, but it shouldn't be that bad, right...? surely the league wouldn't let anything too bad happen.

despite that, she couldn't stop bouncing her leg until the new round was called. the waiting was the worst part of it, and she perked up the second it was over, giving the pokeball resting in her hand a pat for good luck.

"guess that's us. break a leg out there?" with that, she makes her way to the designated arena, where she takes a spot on the opposite side of her opponent, who seems nice enough.

"i just got here, believe it or not." it's offered with a little laugh. "i'm elodie hayfield. and this is-" with one solid movement, she releases the elegantly-dyed milotic from her pokeball. "the pokemon i'll be using, sprinkles."

she takes a second to step back and prepare herself for...whatever exactly was going to happen. "we're ready whenever you are."

"Flew in just for the tournament?" Shalin asked. "You must be quite the battler if you came all the way out here for it. Guess I have my work cut out for me!" The Milotic made the Captain smile. "I've got one, too! His name's Levy. If I was allowed to bring another Pokémon, it would have been him." The green-haired girl hurled her Poké Ball toward the arena's center, a Shiny Beedrill of terrifying size emerging from it. The blue-eyed bug looked big enough for one person to ride atop. "I'm ready! May the best trainer win!"

That may have been the last the two had been able to communicate with one another, the Beedrill's drone drowning out much of the other noise in their battle court. When Shalin hurled her TERA ORB toward the bug, a crystalline, earthen layer formed around Queen Zing's carapace, transforming her into a GROUND-TYPE. Pointing both her foreleg stings at the serpentine water-type, she charged toward her foe in a DRILL RUN, the conic weapons whirling as fast as a Rhydon's horn.

"oh, no. i just had good timing." it's as close as she can get to admitting she isn't much of a battler without...actually admitting it, and she's quick to make sure it's at least somewhat cleared up. she doesn't want anyone thinking she's something she's not, after all.

and she's glad she manages to clear it up before her opponent releases her pokemon, because the beedrill's buzzing drowns out anything else she wants to say. sprinkles, to her credit, is quick to react on her own without elodie needing to yell over the noise. she's not sure if her milotic moving on her own is a good thing or a bad thing, but...well! she'll find out soon enough, right?

as the beedrill gets closer, sprinkles lashes out a dragon tail at the bug type pokemon, with more force than elodie's really seen her use before.

Queen Zing's whirling stings cracked Sprinkles' tail scales, latching on and pumping her full of venom. She churned her wings louder and harder to pump as much venom as possible into the water-type before the desperate Milotic flailed and flicked her DRAGON TAIL in an effort to dislodge herself from the Beedrill's pin. Had the wasp been able to completely pierce both sides of her foe's scales, that would have been impossible.

Shalin's partner extended her TWINEEDLE deeper into the aquatic foe's tail as she was wildly thrashed about, desperate to find a scale or a bone to latch onto. If she could just hold on like a Joltik clinging to a feline Pokémon's fur, the poison would do its work, rendering the tail useless for battle. All it would take to dislodge her, though, would be one flick at the right power and angle!

despite sprinkles' attempts to knock the beedrill away, the bug pokemon still manages to latch on, and elodie herself is the one that finds herself wincing. it doesn't seem like it feels pleasant, and, for a second, elodie wonders if calling off the match would be too much.

her milotic doesn't seem willing to give up that easily, though, and gives her tail a vicious thrash with aqua tail, trying to either dislodge the bug pokemon- or slam it into the ground, whichever came first.

elodie, for once since the battle started, finds that even if she wanted to say anything, the words won't come to her. she's left silent and hoping that this time her pokemon can do something- if only because she's not sure she can handle it otherwise.

The flailing tail had a lot of strength to it. Shalin knew; she raised Levy, a Milotic of her own. She knew how much power was needed to propel not only his own heavy body, bot that of several people riding him. She had ridden Levy by the tail herself, but never while the water-type had truly tried to unseat her.

Queen Zing's blue eyes flickered as Sprinkles managed to dislodge one of her foreleg stings. The other was still pumping venom into the cream-scaled Pokémon at a disturbing rate. It was a rate that would increased when the vibrating insect raised her dangerous rear sting, plunging it toward the tail in a POISON JAB that might cause more squeamish trainers to look away.

sprinkles' thrasing was painful to watch, and elodie found herself holding onto the fabric of her sleeve as if that ould help anything. there was a moment- short and yet enough to get elodie's hope up- where the bug pokemon had almost been dislatched, struggling to stay on.

it ended just as fast as elodie thought maybe they stood a chance, and the beedrill angled its stinger down towards the milotic's tail and- elodie couldn't hide her grimace, looking away. how did people manage this? she could still see sprinkles out of the corner of her eye, the way the milotic had gone mostly still in an effort to recover what she could, but she couldn't watch it outright.

would the rest of the battles get easier, if she stayed? surely they wouldn't all be like...this.

Even a Milotic would succumb to Beedrill poison in high enough doses. Recognizing that Sparkles would be in serious danger if the match were allowed to continue, the official called the rest of the bout off, declaring the Captain the winner.

"Good match. Sorry it was so one-sided," she apologized to Elodie. "How about I give you some advice when we break for lunch after round six? Or even right now, since it was over so fast and we have to wait for the rest of the matches to finish anyway."
