though maki doesn't live in the dormitory, she can often be found at the training facilities on the submarine. she takes her exercises very seriously, and would rather do them here than somewhere more public where she might be discovered. the submarine itself, and the people living there, take on more of a plastic quality to her. they're more like figurines than people, under the thumb of a higher power that dares them to step out of line. if they cut the strings, they'll fall limp and placid; useless, in maki's eyes. she socializes only as much as can be expected of her. no more, and no less.

there are people here who know her better, though. on this particular evening she's meeting jayden here to discuss something. what it is, she hasn't been informed yet. in order to pass time, she's been busy doing some stretching exercises to keep herself limber. there's some other grunts here working in a similar manner, but she hasn't so much as given them the time of day, focusing instead on herself. that being said... she hasn't yet broken a sweat.

when the door opens, and a familiar face walks in, maki immediately snaps to attention. "good evening, jayden."

[break][break] these days, MAKI YUKIMURA remains one of the few grunts that still call jayden by his given name. when he'd first become beast and later admin, jayden had always struggled with such formal titles. he'd never felt like he deserved them. but somehow, over the months and years that had existed between, he'd stopped fighting it.

[break][break] hierarchy was the anchor that made rocket strong. without it's brass and nickel, what could the organization's foundation stand on?

[break][break] he stepped through the automated doors and into the training facility, wearing little else but a tight compression shirt and pants. the perfect outfit for training. bandages wrapped around his neck and shoulder, from his last "training" session with THEO BECKETT.

[break][break] he'd called her here for a few reasons. one, he wanted to see how her training was going. two, he had a question for her. and three, he simply missed her.

[break][break] "are you ready?" he said, standing across the fighter mat, as if he expected her to brawl.

it seems her prediction was correct. they don't waste time on formalities; instead, maki drops into a crouch, a practiced stance that leaves no obvious openings. she'd been prepared for this, having expected as much given where they were meeting. a couple of the other grunts around them stop what they're doing to observe, their curiosity getting the better of them, but maki still pays them no attention. as long as they stay out of the way, the wooden audience is welcome to watch.

"always," comes maki's reply. she's spent most of her young life prepared for combat at any given moment. her training had been merciless, as she expects jayden's was as well. those outside rocket could never understand the ties that bind them together. the world outside is callous and cruel, and no one understands that better than those who've known that since they were children.

maki waits for jayden to make a move. whether he begins the fight, or whether he backs off... either way, she's prepared.

maki's posture loosens. she's expected to start them off, is she? changing from a defensive stance to an offensive stance, she analyzes her opponent, trying to determine if there's any weak points she can exploit. as it's jayden, she doesn't notice anything glaring, which means she'll have to get a little creative with it. charging forth blindly won't work, as that momentum could be used against her.

instead, she circles him on the mat, her expression kept carefully neutral. once she gets closer, she strikes; quick as a whip, she lashes out with what seems to be a strike to the gut. at the last moment, though, she pulls away and instead attempts to sweep his feet out from under him.

[break][break] she doesn't move immediately. MAKI YUKIMURA assesses him first, circling him on the mat, and violet eyes follow her gaze as she does so, manuvering with her in tandem.

[break][break] and then, quick as a snake's bite, she strikes.

[break][break] he blocks her first strike with his forearm and is quick to leap in the air to avoid being knocked off his feet.

[break][break] "good," he says, with a nod of approval. "you're quicker than you were last time. let's see how you fare with some weapons, now."

[break][break] he tosses at her a wooden pole, handing one for himself in turn.

[break][break] rather than wait for her to attack this time, he sweeps the wooden pole beneath her legs and then aims a stab towards her midsection with it's backend.

she takes up the wooden pole, and is barely given time to secure it in her hands before jayden is moving. he sweeps at her feet, and she takes notice of the movement out of the corner of her eye, instead focusing her line of vision on the center of his body. he aims to unbalance her, she thinks, so he can strike her and knock her down all at once.

she's quick enough to dodge the sweep. then comes the strike, as expected. she twists her body to block the blow, then dances closer to jayden, locking her weapon with his. maki fixates her eyes on jayden's face. "this isn't what you came here for," she says, no emotion in her voice. "what is the real reason?" despite the conversational tone, she's ready to retaliate if he strikes again.

[break][break] "what do you think i'm here for, maki?" he says instead. if not to train her body, then train her mind. "if you think this isn't what i came here for."

maki thinks on her feet, as always. she doesn't stop the fight to think, and instead keeps her body moving, her weapon sliding away from jayden's. this time she chooses a frontal assault, knowing it will be least expected now after she's primarily been playing on the defensive. her pole pivots up at full force; anything less, she knows from experience, will be easily knocked to the side. she aims for his jaw. a blow to the head, even if it's lower, is usually enough to stun anyone for a couple seconds.

"it's not a mission briefing," she observes as she does this. "you're testing me for something. it may be a rather complex assignment. you're making sure i'm ready for something." since he's testing her combat skills, it's likely not a stealth mission. what could it be...?

the other dolls in the house continue to watch, faceless entities enraptured with whatever the hell is going on in the training room.

her strike is rewarded with a defense, the clash of two wooden poles ringing off in the quiet space. [break][break]

some have wandered a bit close to witness the two sparring. after all, it is not often that jayden cross can be seen in the flesh these days, having spent the last several weeks holed up in his icy cavern of an office. [break][break]

but MAKI YUKIMURA is special. it is obvious in the way that the admin holds himself, bearing no hesitation as he splits forward from the attack, wielding his own weapon mid-length towards the young girl's torso. [break][break]

"correct," he breathes. "what am i preparing for you, maki?" [break][break]

"if not a mission, what is it?"

what, then? what is it?

he aims a jab at her torso. it's not possible to block it this time, so a variety of scenarios flash through maki's head at lightspeed. she could take the blow, then take advantage of the resulting opening to retaliate. she could simply dodge out of the way and continue their dance with neither ceding ground to the other. if she took that route, she'd have to rely largely on luck, just as much as skill, to carry her through.

there is one advantage to wielding blunt weapons rather than blades... maki twists out of the way, and then grabs his pole with both hands, still keeping hold of her own. her grip is tight.

"is this about s.p.e.c.t.r.a?" she's paused for a moment.

maki has always been intelligent, clever as a whip, and with the ability to think swiftly on her feet. amongst all the grunts that are currently in attendance, she is easily at the top of their list. it is one of the reasons that he is so fond of her, which is also the reason that he does not bare any hesitation at striking a sword towards her torso.

[break][break] and sure enough, she does not disappoint.

[break][break] she calculates each of those choices swiftly in her head and makes the appropriate one, her smaller fingers grabbing around the other edge of the pole with quiet intensity.

[break][break] he blinks.

[break][break] 'good job, maki.'

[break][break] he releases his grip immediately, using the intensity of her momentum to shift her weight against her. he leans back his heels, allowing some distance between them and for her to wield both weapons.

[break][break] "yes. spectra. have you heard of it?"

[break][break] he is done sparring now; she's passed his silent test, and now is the point where he rewards her with the element of knowledge.

[break][break] "you did not participate in the trinity trials so admittingly... you are behind the other applicants in that regard. but you exceed them in almost every other category, or so i think."

[break][break] he tilts his head, the ghost of a smile on the corner of his lips.

[break][break] "that is, of course, if you are interested, maki."

she relaxes her guard as well, standing back. her answer comes rather dispassionate, but here in this place she doesn't have to pretend to be the kind, sweet daughter of the yukimura family that the public knows her to be. "yes. i'm interested." maki isn't looking to climb the ladder and become an administrator. even she knows she's not the leading type, and that she's much better at following orders. mostly she just wishes to be a useful pawn for rocket and her family.

in the end, she's nothing more than a doll herself.

"i'll do what it takes." the avatars are a threat to rocket's takeover of the region. even the ones who currently align themselves with rocket are an unknown element, and that includes jayden himself. "we have to be prepared for anything. if you have confidence in my abilities, then i'll use them as leadership see fit."

her response leaves jayden satisfied.

[break][break] in many ways, the two are one and the same. cut from the same shadow of rocket's cloth, he has never once asked her to be someone that she was not. she does not need to wear a mask around him, to try to act the part of a marionette.

[break][break] her response, while perhaps dispassionate to some, only comes across as genuine to him.

[break][break] "very well," he praises. "i will send the paperwork and materials over to you." with the weapons sheathed and put away, jayden returns to her. a hand clasps lightly around her shoulder as he leads her towards the training room's exit, his head tilted — he's more than aware of their audience.

[break][break] "remember what you said, maki. that you'll do whatever it takes."

[break][break] his eyes glance towards a particularly doe-eyed grunt.
