it would be nice if she could stay the entire weekend, wouldn't it? it's been some time since they were able to hang out for more than just a few hours. maki's been so busy with her double life, as she monitors both the operations of the yukimura conglomerate in hoenn while doing her work for rocket as well. add training in there, and... well, she's had no real downtime, even sacrificing sleep in order to keep everything running smoothly and efficiently.

"i'll be leaving sunday," maki says. two days with her sister is more than she would normally ask for, but their family recognizes a need to at least keep up appearances. hitomi doesn't know about maki's "extracurricular activities", so they don't have much of an excuse for keeping the two apart. hopefully, hitomi will never find out. she's not suited for the family business, and honestly, neither is their older brother seiichi. that's why maki has to shoulder it all.

"how about we get something to eat? do you have any favorite restaurants around here?" she asks her sister.

Seiichi laughs at everyone's concern sheepishly. "I'm quite alright, thank you," he says smoothly. "I'm sure nothing out of the ordinary is going on." Maki raises an eyebrow at him as he takes his seat at the table again. He places his napkin back on his lap, picks up his chopsticks, and begins to eat...[break][break]

...but only a couple minutes later there's a shriek from down the hallway. Both Yukimuras stiffen, and the door to the hall bursts open as a maid rushes in in near-hysterics. "Chef Kawasaki--" she sobs. "Chef Kawasaki is dead!"[break][break]

A pause. Maki is the first to speak, as she stands up abruptly and turns to face their guests. There's a smile on her face as she rushes to placate them. "...and thus begins our other activity for the evening," she lies. "We've set up a wonderfully realistic murder mystery for our guests here today!" It's the only way she can think to mitigate the damage. "All of our doors and windows are locked, meaning the culprit remains in this wing... It'll be up to you five to determine who the culprit is in the end." This explanation is given as smoothly as possible, and anyone who seems doubtful gets met with a meaningful look from behind Maki's mask. We can't let the culprit escape, she seems to say silently.[break][break]

Seiichi blinks. "...ah, right! The murder mystery. Yes, I'd almost completely forgotten."[break][break]

Whether the guests are persuaded or not, the door to the hall remains open now. Once you exit, immediately to your right is a walk-in closet with plentiful supplies. Further down the hall, to the left, are three single-occupant bathrooms. All the way near the exit, to the right, is the entrance to the kitchen. Should you choose to go in here, you will be confronted with a small walk-in fridge and a pantry where the body rests. The exit itself is, of course, locked.[break][break]

You may also choose to question the staff: There are two servers and the maid who discovered the body. All three seem rather shaken.[break][break]

You have ONE POST per round to choose what to investigate and investigate it. Please ROLL at the end of the post and I will determine what information you have gleaned from your investigation. You have about four days to post.

throughout the week, maki collects as much information from the others in her ward as she can. she stores as many tears as possible, and when the time comes to break free, she's right there alongside her "comrades". she doesn't really consider them as such, finding many of them oafish and slow, but regardless she's still made an effort to play nice whenever she could without giving away her identity. for now, it's important that they work together. maki begrudgingly realizes she's not getting out of this on her own.

her toxic chain has grown sharp, with spikes on it. though the spikes hurt her as well, she uses her own toxic chain as a whip to try and corral munkidori away from the escaping inmates, going for an up-close approach as she's noticed how it tends to attack from a distance. despite her injuries and her general exhaustion, her form is airtight, reflecting many hours of training with various combat implements. out of spite, she attempts to hurt the opposing pokemon as much as possible.

and then she's crowding onto the platform with the others, her hands broken and bleeding. more annoyed than anything at how long it's taken to get this far, maki wipes her hands on her clothes. then she grabs at the hem of her top, tearing some of it into strips and winding them around her hands to staunch the flow of blood. finally, she ties her makeshift bandages into a knot.

she wonders, briefly, if they can all take their masks off now. she doesn't attempt it, instead opting to keep it on. she's silent, not even the tapping of a foot or a shifting of her stance indicating impatience.

The scene is set; there's a large table with room for every guest and then some, and said guests are allowed to take whatever seats they choose. Ahead of time they were asked about their food preferences, so each meal is tailor-made to their liking. At one end of the table sits Maki Yukimura, clad in a blue gown with a white mask, and at the other end sits Seiichi Yukimura, lounging with a cat-like grin on his face. The two hosts are both grateful to everyone who's shown up, as they engage in light chatter.[break][break]

The first course is brought out. The maid, unfortunately clumsy, spills the soup as she enters the dining hall. She apologizes profusely, and Seiichi quickly orders her to go back and ask the chef for more soup. Dinner is therefore delayed another fifteen-ish minutes, until the soup is ready again and brought back out. When it's served, it's nice and hot. But once the heat dies down... well, the soup itself is honestly kind of mediocre at best. The hosts seem to notice, as Maki frowns while she's eating it, but decides not to comment. How do you even mess up miso soup? It was done in a hurry, so it can't be helped, she supposes.[break][break]

Dinner continues. The next serving is brought out, this being the main course that was cooked for each individual rather than everyone eating the same meal. The entire evening, overall, is uneventful...[break][break]

...until the lights go out. There's a soft gasp from one of the servers, and in the darkness, two chairs scrape against the wooden floor. Maki calls out, "Seiichi, check the breakers!" and Seiichi responds affirmatively. You can all hear his footsteps retreating, but he seems to slip against something, letting out a yelp as he hits the floor with a thud.[break][break]

"Seiichi, are you alright?" Maki calls.[break][break]

No response.[break][break]

"Seiichi?"[break][break]

Finally, there comes some awkward laughter from the floor. "Sorry, I got a little stunned," he explains. The lights come back on, and the eldest Yukimura sibling is lying in a heap on the floor. He quickly collects himself and stands up, turning back around to the guests. "Our apologies~!" he calls, giving a dramatic bow. "There must have been a power surge."[break][break]

she isn't able to get any particularly useful information out of the dream. as the days wear on, she starts to show signs of wear and tear on her psyche, though her usual stubbornness is maintained as carefully as possible. she does her work as well as possible given her injuries, and makes minimal contact with the other prisoners. thanks to the masks on their faces, she can't really tell who is who, or if there's anyone she recognizes here, so she doesn't trust anyone and would rather keep to herself.

on her first trip to the chamber of desires, she sees... darkness. it's a void, as if peering into her soul itself. as she wanders through it, she can hear the sound of a music box on the other end, playing a familiar song. she follows the sound, wandering blindly. something cold starts to fall around her. she realizes it's snowing, collecting on her hair and eyelashes as she blinks the flakes away.

what is it you desire?

she comes upon a wall, smooth, curving upwards towards a rounded ceiling. the snow has stopped falling. as she looks up, she realizes she can see a massive face, covered in shadows. a hand reaches for her cage, picking it up and shaking it, along with maki inside it. the snow starts to fall again, as maki is tossed around haphazardly. outside, she can hear someone call for her, but the voice that answers is that of a young girl. it's her own voice, she realizes, as she falls limply to the ground inside the snowglobe.

she reaches out for the giant shadowy figure. she thinks she can almost touch her, that little girl who doesn't yet understand how the world works. if she imagines it, she can feel her fingers graze her cheek, caress her face... but a hole opens up underneath her, and maki awakens back to the cold reality.

she is especially quiet after that, ignoring anyone's attempts to chat.

maki waits on campus sporting a brand new, much shorter haircut. nobody pays her much mind, because this is the sort of school where expensive outfits, shoes, and bags are commonplace. actually, compared to many others waiting here, her outfit is rather plain-- an oversized sweater, a pair of ironed slacks, and blue flats are all she's sporting aside from her usual bag today.

and the smile on her face is even farther from her usual smile, because it's actually genuine. in fact, her entire expression lights up just a bit when she spies hitomi coming from class.

she hadn't said she was coming. maki had wanted it to be a surprise. "hitomi," she says, conscious of how bare the back of her neck feels, how easy it would be for someone to press cold steel there. she banishes those thoughts to the back of her mind. this is the one place where she's here not as a rocket, but as a sister. "i thought i'd stop by-- you have a three day weekend, right?"

just like that, it's settled. she'll have to prove herself, but that shouldn't be too troublesome. she has confidence in her ability to be of use to rocket, whose actions in this matter would benefit the entire region. weed out the weak and stupid, and make sure the strong are kept under tight surveillance... that's the way the world should be, and the way maki's world has always been.

she nods. "understood." her path is being carved out for her. that makes things simple enough. "thank you for the sparring session-- i should be on my way. i have a meeting to attend soon." she'll report this to her father so he knows she's making headway.

maki nods, agreeing to dorian's plan. if they can make use of these hapless fools, then they should. it's important to not waste anything, even a useless life like theirs.

she continues to play the good cop. the drive is a little bumpy, since the roads here aren't well-maintained, and she's jostled by every bump. maki stays with their captives in the back, offering them a small smile. "don't worry," she says. "this will all be over soon enough." they know better than to make a fuss, even though they've realized what must have happened to their companion back in the house. tears gather in their eyes, and they say nothing.

once their captives have been dropped off, maki thanks dorian for the learning opportunity and heads off on her own.

maki is no stranger to pain, but even she winces as the cold water hits her injuries. bruised ribs, she thinks, and probably a damaged collarbone, at the very least. that's not even counting all the minor scrapes and bruises she got from being walloped by the mystery creature. she cleanses herself as best she can, but before she can really deal with all her injuries they're escorted back to their cell. maki doesn't intend to do more than doze tonight, wanting to be ready for anything, so she offers Sylvia Cousteau the cot.

but then... she does fall asleep, despite her attempts to stay awake. her mind and body are exhausted, so she finds herself drifting... into an impossible dream, one where she seems fully awake and cognizant of what's going on. her surroundings themselves are vibrant and full of life, but she's only focused on one thing.

wandering the area, she sees some other prisoners in their kitakami garb. maki decides to ignore them and go straight for the megalopolans, targeting one and following him until he's alone. once cornered, she grabs him by the collar, ignoring his initial statements. "tell me everything you know about the toxic chains," she growls. if he resists, she will attempt to beat him until he confesses. she doesn't have time to waste on sympathy or pity; she doesn't know how long she'll be in this dreamworld, and it's the only place where she's currently free.

maki takes the floor to sleep on.
once in the dreamworld, she hunts down a guard and threatens him in order to have a question answered.

INTRODUCTION

Rejoice, Hoenn! For it has been announced that soon, within the next month, the ever-affluent Yukimura family will be hosting a party here in Mauville of your very own region! The gathering will be a masquerade, an evening affair in which you are expected to dress in your best formalwear and don a mask in order to hide your identity.[break][break]

The oldest Yukimura child, Seiichi Yukimura, as well as the middle child, Maki Yukimura, will be your hosts for this evening of good food, dance, and fun. In addition to the regular festivities, they will be holding a contest to determine 6 winners who will be given VIP passes to a special dinner with the two Yukimuras themselves.[break][break]

This could be an amazing opportunity to build your connections… or just to have a very nice meal and some pleasant company for the evening. The cost for the VIPs will be entirely subsidized, right down to the clothing and masks you will wear.

THE EVENT

THIS EVENT THREAD IS A "SIGN-UP THREAD" FASHIONED AS A SCAVENGER HUNT! Everyone participating will be taken to an enclosed area and asked to find certain items. The top 6 contestants, rolling 1d100, will be given their VIP passes and invited to partake in dinner with the hosts. Contestants will only be asked to make a single post for their entry and then roll to determine who wins.[break][break]

However… it may become apparent that, at the dinner, everyone is not who they seem. There will be a mystery for your characters to solve in that building set off from the rest of the masquerade. The hosts may play it off as just another part of the evening, but it will be no game. [break][break]

All non-VIP members are invited to have a much more normal evening and participate as they like in their own threads for the event. The VIP members will also be allowed to make offshoot threads, naturally, but they will also be asked to participate in a little Clue-style narrative in the VIP thread. If you find you are unable to participate in this, please let me (Newt) know so I can ask a runner-up to attend. [break][break]

Please post your entry in this thread by describing your character hunting down scavenger hunt items. You may invent your own items to find, but the actual winners will be determined via roll. If you require ideas for scavenger hunt items, please look at the list below:

they're given another menial task; maki is starting to grow tired of these things. nevermind the physical torment, the mental anguish of doing the same things over and over is going to be the thing that breaks people... sighing, she gets to work, going down on her hands and knees to start sorting through the muck. the mochi pieces are somehow more disgusting than the bits of decaying flesh, as she picks up and puts everything in its proper place.

then comes the growling. she ignores it at first, but when the masked creature shows itself, she's quick to try and avoid it. usually her reaction time would be quick enough, but she's hampered badly by the toxic chain. grimacing, maki is pulled into place, left a sitting duck for punishment. the only thing she can do is try to twist around the toxic chain, ignoring the pain from straining it, to avoid the beast.

unfortunately, it's not enough. she's buffeted and beaten by the assault, though she doesn't cry out or show any sign that she's in pain.

her theft does not go unnoticed, but then... she didn't really expect it to. everything here is an experiment, as she tries to decipher the rules and regulations so she can figure out just what sort of situation they're in and how to get out. the toxic chain isn't even necessary to get her to oblige removing the shard, and as she's hoisted in the air, she uses the opportunity to take a good look at the rest of the ward. her expression is blank as she scans it, looking for any signs of weakness.

then the screen lights up. maki watches with indifference as the pokeballs flash through, each being crushed until it reaches her own. her aurorus shows briefly, just moments before it, too, is smashed. the cries of pain and dismay can be heard around the ward as each ball is smashed, but maki remains silent for hers as she ponders this.

when she is released, she falls to the ground and then sits up, still thinking. "...either it's all a show of force with nothing behind it, or... our pokemon are indeed here," she muses quietly. either way, she sees something of a positive in this. one of her pokemon may be gone, but she has five left. if she can just determine a way to reach them, then she can fight back.

the trust or forsake game gives her pause. she rifles through her list of "appropriate reactions" in her head, but comes up blank. 'forsake' is obviously the correct answer, but saying as much goes against her disguise as the yukimura's caring young daughter. her cellmate votes to forsake, and maki stands up. "i won't participate in such a barbaric game," she states, turning away. there. my vote has been cast as forsake. with nobody the wiser for it, too. let them think she's truly an idiot, if they must.

maki tries to get a good look at the rest of the ward.
her AURORUS is smashed to pieces.
she abstains from the vote, making hers a vote to FORSAKE.
