Eko quirked a brow at the little nincada as it skittered around her feet. ”You’re awful chipper today.” A smirk played at her lips as she bobbed from side to side baiting the pokemon playfully before rushing away.

Kshana darted after her partner - the two now caught up in a mini race to their place on the battlefield.

It was all for fun for Eko and Kshana but there were so many strong trainers and pokemon that had come to compete… She wished there had been a novice level they could have entered. Still, Kshana was in high spirits and so she would be too. ”Let’s give ‘em hell.” She winked at the nincada before turning to her opponent. ”Name’s Eko,” she motioned to her partner ”and this is Kshana.”

Fortune had at last smiled upon Shalin. When she checked her phone for the ninth round pairings, she had been paired down. The opponent she would be facing had a worse win-loss record than she did. She would need all the help she could to squeeze into Day Two. Even if she got there, it would be a guarantee that she would be in the money.

Shalin took her position in the arena, standing across from a white-haired athlete that reminded her of Josh Devlin . "Good luck to you, Eko! Captain Shalin Nariya of Rustboro," she introduced herself before clicking her Poké Ball's release switch. A Shiny Beedrill of great size emerged from it. "And this is Queen Zing. Are those noise canceling headphones? Might want to use them - she can get a bit loud when she's in battle." More than a bit loud. More like deafening.

Kshana tossed her head to a fro as she shuffled into position. A happy little bug, bopping along to the beat of her own drum. The nincada was always pleased as punch to meet anyone new. She let out a trill to greet her opponent as the trainers finished their introductions.

Eko nodded firmly as Captain Nariya wished her luck. Even with it, their chances were questionable. But, they were not zero. ”Ok, Kshana, let's start with a mud-slap.”

[break][break]The bug let out another trill and, with her body swaying gaily, slung a clawful of mud at Queen Zing. If it weren’t for the arena, she might just look like she was playing.

Shalin had warned Eko of the noise. Once the horn sounded, Queen Zing took to the air, her rapid wingbeats drowning out the gallery's cheering. The Nincada's MUD SLAP, if it found Queen Zing's compound eyes, would be a real problem; the wasp relied on her omnidirectional vision during every hunt.

The pitch of her buzzing grew higher as she whipped up a TAILWIND, relying on it to not only prevent being blinded, but to make her subsequent sting even more painful. Without any ear protection or being used to such noise, the buzzing could have left a ringing sensation in Eko's ears. Even Shalin's were starting to suffer after so many matches!

Eko had been too focused on thinking up a good first move to heed her opponents advice about her headphones. But, as the beedrill picked up speed, a hand instinctively found its way up to the headphones and slid them on. Having something muffling her hearing made her nervous but it would probably be worse without them on. She eyed the field in front of her as Kshana’s attack missed.

Kshana, on the other hand, seemed entertained by her opponent’s swift maneuvering. In fact, the way she continued to sway to-and-fro she almost looked like she was dancing. Her eyes stayed on Queen Zing, though. She may not be battle-worn but she could see something was coming. She skittered backwards, eyes still trailing the beedrill. ”Protect yourself!” She recognized Eko’s voice, heavily damped by the buzz that amplified as her opponent drew closer.

She shrunk into herself and her exoskeleton sheened with a harden.

Shalin's smile grew when she saw she already had the Nincada on the defensive, HARDENING its carapace against the incoming assault. Queen Zing's kind knew little of defense -- only aggression. She saw the withdrawal as an opportunity to swoop in for a sting.

Extending her FELL STINGER toward Kshana, the green Pokémon zoomed toward the fellow bug-type. While insects were resistant to insect venom, Beedrill poison had an intense burning sensation to it that even others of her kind would not be able to completely shrug off in high enough of a dose.

Eko twinged as Kshana took the sting and let out an angry cry. She was already re-thinking the last step. Considering a number of ways it could have gone differently before landing decidedly on a move that would have given Kshana a better chance than harden had. She had thought the second the mud-slapped had missed they were already backed into a corner but she had thought wrong.

Now, though, they were in a corner and had to find a way out. ”Mud-slap again, Kshana!” Maybe another swing would give them a chance to land something and blind the beedrill.

The little bug's claw hooked upward, lobbing another chunk of mud towards Queen Zing's eyes. Things weren’t looking too great but, if nothing else, this would be a learning experience.

Shalin felt bad for Eko, especially after accidentally running her hand over her MEGA CIRCLET when stretching. Having accidentally exposed Queen Zing to the light of MEGA EVOLUTION, she cried, "No! Stop!"

Once the metamorphosis had started, there was no stopping it. Growing two more foreleg stingers as the wake of her droning wings scattered the mud Kshana hurled at her in desparation, she sunk as many of her stings as she could into the small Nincada, the flurry of POISON JABS making Shalin worry for the little one's health.

And what a learning experience it was! Eko’s eyes widened as Queen Zing sprouted even more deadly weapons and jabbed every last one of them at Kshana. The nincada didn’t even stand a chance against the flurry of stings. She gave a feeble cry and fainted.

The horn blared, Shalin was announced the winner, and the match was officially over.

”Well, if we were going down at least we went down in a blaze of glory,” Even if the glory was their opponents, it was a warrior’s end. ”We gave it our best, thank you for the battle!” She returned Kshana to the safety of her pokeball. ”Maybe one day we’ll have a re-match.” She gave a small wave and would shortly be on her way to heal up for the next round.
