"it's me!" he'd exclaim at ollie's introduction of kyle. "i'm the champion!"

the exaggerated enthusiasm dies down as soon as he's done with his bit, returning the gesture in a firm but friendly manner. his poochyena by his feet barks a greeting back to the pikachu.

"it's great!" he tells ollie. "everyone's having fun. no one's tryharding. it's like hoenn star tournament, but livelier."

hst had other events going beside the fights though, so it has that going against vital city tournament. on the other hand, the current tournament has a better atmosphere.

[break][break] Eventually, the announcer sounds and it's time for them to separate, walking to opposite sides of the field to begin the fight. Tofu leaps off his shoulder, shaking his fur before he stares off at his competition, with a sharp gleam in his eyes.

[break][break] The Pikachu squeaks with acknowledgement, conjuring a SURF.

"oh, shit!"

kyle was too absorbed with the idea of having a chat that the activation of his sygna suit comes in late. the sudden boost in parameters quickly transfer to his pokemon, who faces the wave head on.

the poochyena lets the wave crash on him directly as he charges straight at it, plunging into the depths before creeping up the pikachu above the surf with shadow sneak.

it pops out the water and tries to knock the pokemon off its balance before getting washed away immediately.

[break][break] He - too - is distracted by the mere thought of conversation, which probably makes him and kyle lopez so compatible. At least, in a situation like this.

[break][break] The sudden boost in power allows the Poochyena the advantage. Suddenly, the SHADOW SNEAK slams into the Pikachu and stops the attack half-way. Water pools into the ground as Tofu stumbles backwards, hand growing to his cheek with pain.

[break][break] Growling, Tofu shakes it off before he leaps forward. Energy glows around him before a powerful DISCHARGE attempts to envelope the water-soaked arena.

"wyrdeer." the answer comes quick without even a hint of question. "better to have it on a pokemon you can count on, right?"

ollie's pikachu might be his favorite, but it was always the wyrdeer that he sees when he's out and about in his ranger missions or other responsibilities regarding the region's safety.

"who do you have in mind?"

as the question is bounced back to the head ranger, the poochyena powers through the disarming voice, and when it got impatient, rushes through the torrent of painful notes with shadow sneak.

[break][break] It was a relief to know that kyle lopez thought the same thing as him. It would've been kinda foolish to think about otherwise. He couldn't think of a pokemon more loyal than Mocha, after all.

[break][break] "We might not have a Sygna Suit, but we do have this!" His arm raises, triggering the Dynamax band that sits comfortably around his bicep, glowing with light. When the Pikachu is imbued with a similar power, he grows to triple his size, looking like a giant, chubby skyscraper in the middle of Lilycove's landscape.

[break][break] The SHADOW SNEAK pummels into him, but given his new size, it feels a little like tiny punches rather than a full-force attack. Tofu combats back with an MAX STEELSPIKE that aims to knock the Poochyena off his feet.

the poochyena flies high from the attack after a spike throws it up in the air. kyle cranes his neck upwards to follow it with his eyes.

"do you think the gym leader party can see your pika from their room?" he asks. "do you think we can pain a message on your pika's head and see if they can read it when it goes big?"

it's like a billboard, but it moves.

the poochyena attempts to cling on the pikachu on its way down, claws scraping for a hold as it tries to play rough with its safety.

the pikachu's attack does do a successful job of turning the poochyena away from it. it starts running away from each bolt of lightning that strikes from above, starting a delayed counterattack with future sight.

"we need a victim too, unless it's something that can apply to all of them. hmm..."

one of the disadvantages of a sygna suit is that it syncs one's own mental state to their pokemon and confers boosts to their performance relative to it. thinking hard and confusing himself, however, doesn't have said benefits.

the poochyena starts to panic as his head is filled with the same hurt that his trainer is experiencing from forcing an idea out of nowhere. it relies on the delayed attack it prepared as it attempts to run away from the pikachu's attack.

the future sight explodes on the pikachu's face, though whether or not whose attack registers first for the win is up to fate.
