[attr="class","kazu2"]After taking a few hours to just tour the battlefield, scoping out the competition, Kazuya returned the gear to a visible place. He was glad Natsu’s move set had been changed right before the event. The addition of Ice Punch already proved itself useful on more than one occasion. With their break at an end, the former hotshot wove his way through the crowd. Unfortunately, most trainers already seemed occupied.

Then, his golden eyes caught on a young lady departing from a completed battle. The bear next to him started forward with a vicious grin. “Hold,” Kazuya ordered calmly, and the towering Bewear instantly obeyed. Much slower in his approach, Kazuya did his best not to frighten the young woman. Many were intimidated by his size and general appearance. A fact that had been true long before he went to jail.

A large hand rose in greeting.”Good afternoon.” The mercenary bowed from the waist to the young woman and her partner. “I am Kazuya. This is Natsu.” The bear growled some kind of greeting. The sight of the bee activated some primal desire in it. It wanted honey, and he didn’t care that this wasn’t a bee. “Would you be so kind as to battle us?” His typical ventriloquy ‘act’ was on full display.

At last, Shalin had made it to the finals of a mini-flight. She was guaranteed cold, hard cash. The question was, how much? That would all depend on whether she could take down Kazuya Yoshida , an intimidating-looking combatant with a Bewear that looked like he could take an incredible amount of punishment. Landing the first sting early felt like it would be key against such a Pokémon.

"Good luck to you, Kazuya!" the Rustboro Captain chirped back, the great queen Beedrill crawling next to her. "Captain Shalin Nariya of Rustboro, and this is Queen Zing," she introduced herself and her partner, the wasp waving the flat of one of her foreleg stings to greet them both. "We're both getting a check for our work. Let's make this a good match! The money's secondary, right?"

The insect looked strong—its wings and carapace well-formed. “Thank you.” This, paired with its unique coloration, implied this creature had likely been sought out by its trainer. It was not an accident.

The League had imprisoned him for almost a third of his life. They had tortured and interrogated him for years for a crime he did not commit. His beloved Pokemon were sold off like cheap trinkets at a flea market. To say he despised the organization would be an understatement. But, oddly, none of this animosity linked through to the ranger in front of him. “It is a pleasure to meet you." Being mad at a Ranger for the actions of their seedier side was merely misdirecting his rage. He’d save that for the rats who deserved it, whoever they may be.

That did not mean some part of him would not enjoy wiping that look from her face. But, first, she would need to climb off her bug’s wing.

Then, the young woman offered her well wishes. “I aim to.” The mere implication that he ever did anything less than his best was akin to sacrilege. He may have been a self-absorbed twat, but he rarely said things he could not back up. With a nod to his bear, he struck out quickly, “Ice Punch!” With surprising grace, the intimidating bear charged toward the insect with a flurry of frigid punches.

Those wings were a lot stronger than Kazuya could ever have imagined; with the flow of Infinity Energy between Shalin and her Flygon, she could sit on one of them to amplify the shockwaves the vibration caused. It was a terrifying power to witness, and a thrilling one for her to use! She wished she had brought her Sygna Suit to the event, but she wouldn't be able to fight with Queen Zing if she did. She needed to understand why the wasp went ballistic upon Mega Evolving and what she could do to curb it.

From the moment the horn sounded to start the match, the Bewear was aggressive, lunging for Queen Zing before she could take off. She turned around, blowing a TAILWIND into the normal-type's face in an effort to buy her some time to get airborne.

[attr="class","kazu2"]“!?” The Bewear staggers back in the face of the wind burst. His entire body ruffles with a sneeze as bug dust goes up his nose. The noise is surprisingly cute, more like a squeaky toy than the roar the ursine’s frame would imply. Shaking his head like a wet dog, the bear narrows his watering eyes at the floating bee. [break][break]

Kazuya’s jaw clenches tight as he again forces down the wildfire within. Instead, his orders are dispatched calmly. ”Bring her down.” With no moves available to erase the distance, the pair must work to keep the wasp close to the ground. Suddenly, the bear’s eyes catch on a nearby ornamental rock. With pounding legs, he scoops the thing into his arms. With a grunt, Natsu chucks the rock at the bee. Though, it’s an unlikely hit (thanks to the bee’s nimble nature), he’s hoping to bring it back within paw’s reach.[break][break]

And, in truth, Natsu enjoyed any opportunity to show off his Strength.

The size of the rock that the Bewear lifted was staggering, prompting Shalin to reach for her MEGA CIRCLET. She could not take the risk of that rock flattening her precious Shiny Beedrill. The insect grew in size and in ferocity with the light of MEGA EVOLUTION.

In her apex form, the bug-type made no effort to dodge. She hovered in front of the rock as it came toward her, pointing all four of her foreleg stings at it in an effort to catch it. Were she able to do so, she would hurl the stone back at the Bewear with four POISON JABS.

[attr="class","kazu2"]Mega evolution? Though he’d used many Pokemon throughout his career, the mercenary had never fallen to that one. He’d seen the effect it had on the creatures. Glalies are forced to fight with broken jaws. Some of the fire types boiled from the inside out as the temperature grew beyond their tolerance. The normally maligned Beedrill whose ferocity skyrocketed. “Hmph.” The noise is one of patent disapproval.[break][break]

Rangers protected Pokemon? Putting them through pain like this to gain a little bit of strength? In an event designed for fun no less? Maybe this tree rotted further than he’d thought.[break][break]

The bear huffed as the rock was bounced back at him. Poison now coated the sharpest parts of the stone. “Send it back.” With a nod, the Bewear responded with a Hammer Arm. The aura of this fighting move aims to reverse the stone’s trajectory and send it rocketing right back.

Queen Zing quickly grew tired of the tennis match. Were she not Mega Evolved, she would be much more amused and willing to play. Drunk on Infinity Energy, only the hunt mattered to her. Perhaps she was proving Kazuya's internal point even if she wouldn't want to. Were the League and Rocket really just two different sides looking for the same thing? Complete subjugation?

Briefly stopping one of her wings, Queen Zing attempted to swerve out of the way of the large stone. Once she had a good position on the Bewear, she tilted her rear FELL STINGER upward, ready to ram and stab the Bewear with it.

Again, the bee’s wings worked to its advantage. A simple dip allowed it to evade the rock. And, this time, it wouldn’t be getting picked back up. With a loud clatter, it fell out of bounds. He and Kazuya both reach a single conclusion: they need a ranged attack. But that won’t help them now. So, the fighting type’s eyes narrow as the Beedrill dips into a dive.[break][break]

He waits until he can see the compounding in her eyes to act. As she draws within arm shot, he responds with a desperate Ice Punch.

The Bewear and Beedrill exchanged brutal blows: the cold mist from the ICE PUNCH slowed the wasp's wings to the point where she could neither take off nor hold her apex form. Reverting from Mega Evolution left her tired; if she could stay in her peak condition longer, a Drill Run would have likely ended the match. It was not so.

Her highly toxic rear sting was still inside the Bewear, which was something she could more than leverage. She made no direct attack, instead churning her wings in a fierce TAILWIND once more. The purpose this time was not to fly fast, but instead to vibrate her body furiously, poking that sting into the existing wound wider and deeper. The longer that stinger remained inside the Bewear, the more that venom was going to burn!

It may represent a deal with the devil, but the beast always paid. The enhanced power was hard to deny. It could be felt in the thrumming of the bee’s wings. “Good job.” The bear swells in response to the praise. [break][break]

But it does little to soothe the thing in his torso. What started as a stabbing pain shifts into burning. The powerful burst of wind sends the ursine stumbling backward. He’s forced to protect his eyes as dirt and debris from the festival kick up into his sensitive eyes. Even that slight delay is enough to let another round of prison through. “Pull it out.” The bear glances at his trainer, almost incredulous. “It will hurt more if you don’t.” Though new to one another, the Bewear displays a surprising amount of trust. With a squelch he goes to pull the stinger out.[break][break]

With a grunt, the ursine forces himself to his full height. “Strike back.” A deep breath follows as the bear tries to push away his pain. With a deep grunt, he tries to land another Hammer Arm.

Shalin gasped in awe as the Bewear miraculously mustered the strength to pull the huge needle out of its body and toss it aside, perhaps even in the same stroke as the HAMMER ARM that swatted the Beedrill away. What vigor and sheer force of will Kazu's Pokémon had.

Another direct strike would be too risky with the tired wasp in her deteriorating condition. She kept up the ferocity of her TAILWIND, this time to retreat and circle the Bewear. She did not need to land another sting; by now, the Pokémon was so envenomed that its strength had to expire soon. Preferably before that timer hit zero and the match went to a judge decision.

[attr="class","kazu2"]The bear was obviously flagging. The battlefield swam before him as his attack took hold. Though the stinger was out, it’d obviously done its job. As he tried to follow the bug, there was a stumble in his steps. A pronounced, almost drunkard gait only intensified as the Tailwind struck him in the face. It drove Natsu down to one knee and his legs turned to jelly. [break][break]

Kazuya did not move to intervene. Instead, golden eyes peered down at the bear with a mixture of curiosity and expectations. “Get up.” The bear turned to his trainer with a shaky nod. It was one thing to lose but another to fall while on one’s knees. A shaking paw pushed on the concrete as Natsu staggered to his feet. It is a battle of wills now.[break][break]

He took one step—two, three. Icy energy began to coat his left paw as he pulled it back for a final blow. But, as he went to throw it, he stumbled again. This time, the bear did not get back up. “Good job.” His trainer said as he knelt beside his partner. A large hand reached out to gently stroke his face. In that same motion, he returned the Pokemon.[break][break]

“Thank you for the battle.” Such a poisonous, deadly creature. A reminder of why he could not relate to a lot of women, he supposed.
