"the councilwoman in charge of this region's combat preparedness is here to take a firsthand look at our newest dynamax spot," freya says, lips twinging in a smile that's not nearly as bright as ollie's, but is pretty damn bright for her.

"and is the giant pikachu i've seen on some of the battlefields this rascal here?" she crouches down when tofu comes near and gives the mouse an affectionate pat on the head.

"not sure. i haven't seen her around." she doesn't really know penny outside of the backdrop of the professional landscape so she can't offer to text her on his behalf either. "why? would you rather fight her than - "
and she unclasps the ball nestled in the middle of her choker. lyune stands at attention by her side, eyes narrowing at the rodent by his mistress' feet.

[attr="class","textbody"] Tofu squealed in reply at the attention, butting his head affectionately against Freya's hand. Ollie gave a soft laugh before replying.

[break][break] "That's him, alright. The rascal." His voice was warm with affection for his partner as he crossed his arms. "Honestly, I don't know what I was expecting with the Dynamax stuff but it's pretty cool." He was sure there were shortcomings to the new technique, but not ones that he knew about right now anyways.

[break][break] He blinks as Lyune appears before shaking his head, lips curved into a shark's grin.

[break][break] "Nah. This'll be fun. C'mon Tofu!"

[break][break] With that, Ollie takes stand on his side of the arena as the Pikachu leaps towards it's center. Doing his best to chase all thoughts of PENELOPE LIVY out of his mind for the moment being, he gives a shout. "Right, let's start off quick, bud. Trailblaze!"

[break][break] Vivid green light wrapped around the Pikachu as he launched into his first attack, propelling himself speedily across the field with an agile zigzag pattern. He did his best to create a dizzying performance before his legs suddenly kicked out from under him with an attempt to knock the Salamance back.

"it's cool now," she says with a sigh. it had felt incredible to fly amidst a swarm of larger-than-life dragons. dragons as they are in fables. they'd all had a common enemy then, and they'd used this to turn the tides of war.

how would it serve them now? when they have no prophecy to guide them? no decades to wait until resolution?

lost in her thoughts, she's slow to hear his first attack. she mutters a curse under her breath and tries to glimpse the trailblazing pikachu. but for all her shortcomings is lyune, watching the rodent race towards him at a dizzying speed.

his reaction? to rupture the very earth beneath them as it nears.

[break][break] While the humans talked, Tofu had no problem taking matters into his own hands. After all, Ollie was always a big talker. Tofu considered himself a big do-er.

[break][break] And do he did, as he raced across the battle, the thrill of the fight running fiercely through him. He didn't get to exercise nearly as much, since Ollie had long given up the battle circuit, so it was only in situations like this where he felt he could really exercise his muscles. Not that Tofu generally minded much — he much liked lounging in that big, new cushy office of his.

[break][break] Now, the earth explodes at Tofu's feet and he can feel nothing but the roar of stone and rock as it blazes around him. He leaps into the air, sprinting swiftly across the rock that lies underfoot with the deftness of a rodent who had climbed rocky cliffs with his trainer too many a time. Pain swells in his cheeks when stray stones scratch his cheek but he's determined to move forward anyway, leaping forward with an IRON TAIL that slams against crag and splinters into the sky before attempting to land down atop his dragon competitor.

lyune is a bulwark. he is a pillar of strength, an unshakeable foundation. against agile foes, he's forced to withstand the storm until his mistress finds an opening. his wings half-unfurl, muscles bunching as tofu clears the wreckage with a bounding leap.

the impact makes him buckle. his long neck sinks and blue flames spurt from the sides of his mouth as his rage broils within him. he wants to bathe the battlefield in fire, but freya keeps him on the ground.

they'll not entice the storm, nor one of its heralds.

"slow him down," she orders. lyune shakes his head and rears back on his hind legs. with a throaty snarl, he slams his paws down into the ground. phantasmal vines, tinged purple with dragonfire, spurt out from the cracks in the newly made rubble. the weeds flush their side of the battlefield, gnarled and corrosive.

[break][break] But it's too late to dodge the attack. The FRENZY PLANT comes chasing after him in the form of phantasmal vines that snake out from the undergrowth, squeezing tight around the Pikachu's small body. Pain bursts like grenades in his body and Tofu finds his breath nearly choked out of him.

[break][break] Nearly enough to make him panic.

[break][break] Nearly.

[break][break] When backed into a corner, one has no choice but to react. Electricity gathers in his red cheeks, pulsating outwards in sparks of light, before suddenly the brilliance of a DISCHARGE attack consumes the arena in it's entirety.

though they don't tempt fate in the skies, lightning strikes down on them anyway. vines root the pikachu in place, as intended, but the exertion needed to cover so much terrain makes lyune slow to act. fire sparks in the back of his throat, but smoke plumes out as a discharge lances over his whole body.

he writhes, tail scattering the phantasmal vines nearest him. he snarls in frustration and looks indignantly down at the pest that's managed to get the better of him. freya reaches a hand to the salamencite wrapped in her hair, answering the coiling of his muscles.

his bones reshift. flesh spurts, knitting itself back together around old war wounds, and he emerges reborn, too big for his body, too much to contain.

a stream of fire races out of his mouth towards the rooted pikachu.

[attr="class","textbody"] Size doesn't matter, a fact that Tofu proves to be true as he unleashes a violent torrent of electricity across the arena. Even as the vines squeeze him into place, he is determined to get out of the corner that he's found himself pushed into.

[break][break] It's through sheer effort and by way of distracting his opponent that Tofu eventually breaks free, the Salamance's tail lashing out just enough to cut the remaining vines that immobilize him.

[break][break] When flames come to scorch the air, to end him and burn him to a crisp, the vines snap.

[break][break] Tofu leaps out of the way, tumbling out of the way as scorching pain sears his body. The scream dies in his throat. There's no time for complaints or worries. They're in a battle — and he needs to win.

[break][break] Focusing all the energy into the pit of stomach, the ground rocks. Water leaks into the floor, surrounding the torn vines and pavement, as it fills the open crevices of the earth. Then a surge of water soars through the sky as a SURF swells towards the Salamance.

she's heard that, for whatever reason, the little electric mouse has some affinity for water. and with the power behind its attacks already, she knows damn well that if the surf manages to drag lyune under, there's a chance he may not claw himself out from within it.

his new form grants him the speed he needs to escape it, but more than that, it finally gives him the power to plow headfirst through an attack like this.

so with a shout from freya, lyune tucks his arms into the steel armor of his chest and tips back down towards the earth. green fire snakes down his sides; a gifted energy from an old mentor surges within him.

steam billows out from the tide, sending up a spray of broiling froth as he meets tofu head-on with the power of dragon ascent.

[attr="class","textbody"] Ollie has seen Lyune before, but not yet in this new form. It is beautiful and magnificent as it's expected to be, and Ollie can't help but stare in admiration after it as Lilycove's sunlight makes his wings bleed red until the dribble of Tofu's cresting ocean.

[break][break] He jolts back as the memory accosts him. The sound of two blond-haired, amber-eyed children running through the fields. The sight of metal burning in a firekiln, the clash of weapon and metal armor. The push of DEREK HOFFMAN's swordarm into his, brushing against a bow made of old oak.

[break][break] His Ranger band glows, before triggering Tofu's evolution. The Pikachu grows to astronomical size, his ten-ton shadows swept across the arena in full. The G-MAX VOLT CRASH that thunders through the air hollers like the wind's of old, booming down onto the battle field as the dragon ascent strikes.

and quite suddenly, he is no longer the goliath. the edge he'd given himself is blunted as sparks fly. dragonfire catches and the explosion makes several onlookers shudder when the two impact.

freya has his ball out before he even begins falling. the salamence won't forgive her for withdrawing him, but unlike the dragon, she accepts when they're beaten. still, her palms sweat, neck craned back, heart thumping painfully in her chest at the sight.

it's a fearsome, terrible power. and right now, it's wielded by one of the sharpest trainers she knows, and more importantly - one of the most moral people she knows. but what will happen when inevitably these kaijus fall into the wrong hands?

when they have no common enemy to avert their gazes from each other?

when the dust settles, she strides across the pitch to hold out her hand. "that was a damn good match, ollie. tofu's incredible."
