After several battles, Luka and her Sylveon are starting to feel a little worn out. But to their credit, they're doing a good job of hiding it! The pair seems cheerful as ever as they approach their next match, Luka with a spring in her step and Sugar trotting adorably by her side.[break][break]

"Hello! Um...Monsieur Harcourt? You must be our next battle!"[break][break]

They've never formally met, but Luka recalls seeing him around the ranger bases before. Isn't he a friend of ollie morales? Perhaps that's why she remembers him, or perhaps it's because she never forgets a handsome face.[break][break]

Whatever the reason, she's got to focus! Now that her partner is a little worse for wear, it's more important than ever to stay on their toes.[break][break]

Caleb walked up to his next match feeling somewhat put out by the grind, the entire tournament starting to feel like a bit of a slog. I should get some rest, he thought, suppressing a yawn. All these young folks running around competing seemed to have infinite stores of energy. It was both impressive and irritating.[break][break]
His grumpy mood evaporated the moment he saw his next opponent, however. She was a radiant starburst of pastel pink beauty, all smiles and dimples and fluttering eyelashes. The Sylveon at her side was equally adorable.[break][break]
"Luka, right?" He asked, recalling the name of the person he was supposed to be fighting. He immediately straightened up, ran a hand through his hair, and attempted to look way more badass than he currently felt. Don't lose focus, and don't judge her based on looks alone, he reminded himself, thinking of Melody Miro, who was both a gorgeous idol and one of Hoenn's most elite trainers.[break][break]
"Should be fun," he agreed, flashing her a charming smile. "Shall we?"[break][break]
He released Lyra and the Lapras gave a soft trill in greeting.

To Caleb’s credit, his attempt works. [break][break]

The man in front of her looks calm and collected and most importantly, cool. But unfortunately, it’s hard for Luka to focus on the forthcoming battle when she’s busy thinking oh no, he’s hot! [break][break]

“Eh…what? O-oh, right!” [break][break]

She snaps out of her reverie with a shake of roseate curls and a little smack from Sugar’s ribbon. “Um…yeah! Good luck, monsieur!” [break][break]

Flushed and flustered, she does her best to compose herself and concentrate on the fight. Goodness, she hopes she doesn’t seem too much of a fool! [break][break]

Luckily, Sugar is immune to Caleb’s charms. The Sylveon mewls once as she prances out onto the field, head high and ribbons curling languidly around her lithe body. Aqua eyes narrow as she sizes up the Lapras in front of her, then starts the battle with a burst of bright, blinding light. [break][break]

Her dazzling gleam sparkles across the battlefield, and Sugar uses that momentary blindness as a cover to sprint across the field, trying to evade a counterattack from her opponent.

Monetarily distracted by Luka's extremely cute blush, Caleb barely had time to react to her Sylveon's sudden burst of speed. The sparkling fairy energy blasted forth, curling around Lyra in a thick pink haze.[break][break]
I should ask her out for lunch after this, Caleb thought, also dazed, then shook his head, remembering that he needed to actually participate in the battle first. He ripped his eyes away from Luka and focused them on Lyra.[break][break]
"Come on, girl," he encouraged. "You've got this."[break][break]
The Lapras trilled with a renewed energy, then summoned an ICE BEAM, hoping to freeze her quick opponent in place.[break][break]

Luckily for both of them, their Pokemon are fairly self-sufficient. If it were up to her, Luka would be torn between wanting to let the handsome guy win and wanting to show off. In the end, it's for the best that she takes on more of a cheerleading role.[break][break]

"Come ooooooonnn, Sugar!" she cheers, hands cupped in front of her mouth. "You can dodge that!"[break][break]

And she can! Just as the ice beam is about to strike Sugar leaps over it, and the ground is frozen over instead. She lands carefully and manages to avoid the frozen ground with graceful, delicate steps, like a dancer.[break][break]

Riding the temporary high from their first successful move, she quickly follows it with a second, purring once before her ribbons glow and a psyshock lights up the field.[break][break]

Beams of purple light speed towards her opponent, arching and twisting in seemingly random- but beautiful- patterns. It seems that Sugar is taking advantage of her early momentum to show off a little!

The Sylveon was quick. Too quick for Lyra to keep up with in her current state. Caleb tapped the Mega Accessory on his wrist, activating it. Perhaps a boost in power would give Lyra the edge she needed against the fairy type.[break][break]
Lyra grew to three times her size, shell expanding, a wintery mix of ice and snow swirling around her. The temperature around Caleb dropped considerably, but he didn't mind. He was used to it; he'd been partners with Lyra for most of his life. The Mega-Lapras bellowed, gathering her power. The ground beneath her cracked and groaned as it began to freeze over.[break][break]
"You and Sugar are pretty good," Caleb called out to Luka, still grinning. "Might have to use everything I've got to beat you."[break][break]
Dragon energy gathered, then burst out around Lyra. The DRAGON PULSE rocketed towards the Sylveon with a crackling fury.[break][break]

"Eh...y-you think so?"[break][break]

Luka pauses mid-cheer, blinking over at Caleb in surprise. Her cheeks go pink, and she stifles a girlish giggle behind her hands. It might be silly to be taken aback by his compliment but sadly, it's not the kind of thing she hears often.[break][break]

"Well, um, thank you very much! I think you and your Lapras are very strong too!"[break][break]

It's not just empty flattery— from her, every sentiment is almost painfully sincere. And the mega Lapras is very impressive. Sugar backs up as she reassesses the situation, eyes narrowed as she tries to figure out a way to fight it.[break][break]

However, the first dragon pulse fired at them does...nothing. Sugar stands and takes on the blast head on, shaking it off like it's little more than a gust of wind. It's the chilled air that does them in— while preparing her next attack Sugar slips on a bit of ice and trips, hard.[break][break]

"Ah—"[break][break]

So much for being pretty good![break][break]

Sugar leaps up and shakes herself off, looking terribly embarrassed. To cover her mistake she quickly retaliates with a springtide storm, stirring up a powerful wind that careens towards Lyra in a swirl of sparkling pink.

Luka's blush deepened, her giggle causing Caleb's stomach to do a dumb flip. Realizing he was getting distracted again, he quickly turned his attention back to Lyra. The Mega Lapras looked pleased with herself for having caused Sugar's little mishap. She couldn't get complacent, though - a powerful gust of pink, flowery energy was streaking across the makeshift battlefield right for her.[break][break]
Lyra attempted to duck, her horn glowing with a bright azure power. This time, it was a massive tidal wave of frozen HYDRO PUMP that surged forth, attempting to engulf the Sylveon completely.[break][break]
