Navy watches a fight that blocks one of the main roads to lam logan’s gym. Moving through the city, coordinating the upcoming conference, has proven difficult. At least the difficulty’s entertaining. Marianne tapped her foot impatiently as she waited for the foot traffic to die down enough for her to cross the street. It'd been a busy few days at the Vital City Tournament, but geez! People could still be so rude, jostling and shoving each other around, and then battling with their Pokemon in the most inconsiderate of locations.[break][break]

Did no one have manners anymore? She glumly guessed not, considering the state that the museum had been in after last year's Winter Masquerade.[break][break]

So caught as she was in her in her quiet indignation, the masculine voice of Michael Navidson startled her. She vaguely recognized him as someone important, but not the name. It was a worryingly repetitive problem here. She'd already insulted Barney Funich (BARNABY FINCH) and CIAN MAHER, who was not actually a lead singer in Teravolt, apparently.[break][break]

She squinted at him, afraid to make a guess.[break][break]

"I don't know if enjoying is the right word," she said, pushing her glasses up her nose. "Are you, uh, also here for the tournament?"[break][break]

Her Klefki, more eager to battle than her by a longshot, floated over encouragingly as it awaited an opponent.[break][break]

“Kinda.” As soon as the word leaves his mouth, his expression turns apologetic. “Sorry, don’t mean to be vague. Helping organize the conference that’s coming up. The one with all the gym leaders.” He leaves out how much the high courts of the land resemble a pen full of fiercely independent Meowths.[break][break]
“Getting some fights in’s a nice bonus.” His eyes drift to the Klefki. He can spot an eager Pokemon when he sees one. The key ring wants a fight. That’s another check on the list of things he’s seen. One tiny step closer to being able to say he’s seen everything.[break][break]
“Looks like your Klefki’s ready for a fight. Wanna? It’ll help pass the time.” From the crowd emerges a one-armed Iron Valiant. Even one-armed, he still cuts a fearsome figure. Roland offers the Klefki a polite, chivalrous bow. He has not yet drawn the pink blade for which his kind are famous.

"Oh, well, sure," Marianne managed, watching her Klefki readily get into position. She tilted her head at him thoughtfully as they stepped to the side, considering her next words. "This is a weird question, but do I know you? You look familiar."[break][break]

Then it clicked together. Upcoming conference. Gym Leaders. Oh.[break][break]

She peered at him, trying to determine which of the Gym Leaders might have such an important position.[break][break]

Timidly, she ventured, "Are you possibly FERNANDO SILPH?"[break][break]

That was the Slateport one, right? And a councilman? This felt like a mostly good guess. Probably.[break][break]

Her Klefki, unbothered by the same social dilemma as her trainer, started things off with FOUL PLAY![break][break]

A huffed, exasperated sigh escapes his lips. How should he take that? It certainly wasn’t meant as an insult. He can’t begrudge her for an honest guess.[break][break]
“I look like a CEO playboy to you, Miss?” He teases her, voice punctuated by a playful drawl. “Nah. I’m Dewford’s gym leader. Sheriff Navidson. You can call me Navy.”[break][break]
His attention turns to the battle, where Roland’s strength is being turned against him. Her Klefki is clever – either well-trained or possessed of keen instincts. Roland turns the key before it becomes a fatal strike. Skirting away, he tries to put some distance between them, trying to blast the key away with a focus blast.[break][break]
“Oh.” He adds, almost as an afterthought. “Guess I’m on the Elite 4 now, too.” Which still doesn’t feel real to him. “Guess that means if you win, you’ll get lots of bragging rights.”

“No offense taken.” He says with a good-natured chuckle. “Don’t really feel like much of a celebrity.” Folding his arms, his attention pivots between the battle and the lady.[break][break]
Roland finds himself locked in an old-fashioned beam clash. Brilliant blue fighting spirit meets steel power. Instinct makes him take a step back. Too close and they’ll feel the heat, or be caught in the beam when one inevitably breaks the clash.[break][break]
“Get aggressive, Roland.” The trainer orders. Roland seems to disappear from the beam. Skirting under the oncoming beam, he sweeps his blade up in a fierce psycho cut.[break][break]
“Not much glamour in Hoenn’s League, back in the old days. You ever tune into Unova’s circuit? They treat their E4 like rockstars.” A notion he seems to be chewing over even as he speaks the words, uncertain whether he should be jealous or thankful.

“What ‘bout you? What do you do for a living?” His eyes fall back to the battlefield when he asks the question. A pause to let her talk lets him behold the fey forces at work. The other battle has ended, leaving the crowd to gawk at Roland and Klefki. People are whispering. Murmurs spread. People recognize him.[break][break]
Roland fires back with a moonblast, aimed right at the key ring.

"I'm a coordinator at the National Museum of Natural History," Marianne explained, pushing her glasses up her nose. "I oversee various events and run tours, make sure things go as they ought to, things like that."[break][break]

Secretly, she'd wanted to pursue a phD and become a proper professor on those subjects, but she'd had to shelve that dream when her mother got sick. This was the closest she'd gotten to it, and she was so grateful to GIDEON GRAVES for allowing her to live that dream in her own way.[break][break]

"Not exactly a glamorous or battle-heavy career, though."[break][break]

Though her Klefki had clearly picked up a few things during this event, clearly evident in how she PLAYED ROUGH even in the face of the incoming MOONBLAST.[break][break]

It’s remarkable how such a small thing could bash the Iron Valiant back time and time again. Pokemon, Navy thinks, are truly remarkable creatures.[break][break]
“Party’s gonna be over, one of these days.” People cheer all around them, both for this battle and another kicked up just down the way. “Everybody’s going to have to figure out what they’re good at besides battling, you know? Sounds like you’ve just got a headstart.”[break][break]

"You think so? I--" But then her thoughts cut off, because inexplicably, it seemed she had somehow won against the upcoming Elite Four and current Gym Leader. "Oh, wow."[break][break]

How had that happened?[break][break]

Marianne blinked once, then twice, before she composed herself enough to be a gracious winner. "You fought very well," she said, extending a hand to shake the taller man's own. "It's an honor to go against you at this event!"[break][break]

Suddenly she realized a crowd had formed around them, blocking off traffic the way the other battles had not so long ago. It was strange to be the center of attention, and even stranger to be it when she had won something.[break][break]
