She really did not know how certain gym leaders did it. They had a lot more fights than she’d had. But she was already exhausted. Maybe it was because she had not really ended up liking the format as much as she’d thought she would – mostly because, well, it was quantity over quality. So many quick fights, but they usually were not quite satisfying.

Neither for her, not the Lucario at her side. He did much prefer fights till the very end, when one was knocked out, the other barely standing. But that wasn’t what this was about at all. Usually just three good hits, often not even that.

It wasn’t quite a filling meal. But that was not something to let out on her opponents, so she greeted the newest one in a more friendly fashion. “Good evening there. I hope you aren’t all worn out just yet for this bout.”

The tournament's end was at last in sight for the Rustboro Captain. Megan Whitmore would be her very final opponent, after which she would have a good idea where she would place. John Sullivan was surging up the leaderboards in the eleventh hour, but she was confident her position would hold. Even so, a win here would not only pad her position nicely, but let her fly home with a little extra spending money.

"Evening!" she waved somewhat weakly. "It's been a long weekend, but I should be okay; I had a bigger lunch this time. Captain Shalin Nariya of Rustboro, and Queen Zing will be your opponent," she gestured toward the saddle-wearing Shiny Beedrill. The creature's unusual size may have been imposing for Megan, though larger than normal Pokémon had become more common in Hoenn in recent days.

Ah, so another Rustboro official of sorts. Not like she was a household name yet herself. Her boss was, but she didn’t go around espousing that. At least not without reason. Like, if she met someone else in the trade.

So, for now, she didn’t bring it up. Didn’t matter too much that they worked in the same city, after all. Though she had heard of a supposedly crazy bee girl of some renown in town. That was probably this Shalin, though she didn’t seem all that crazy yet.

Then again, this was not a riding competition, but a simple fight. She had her Lucario take the stage, thus. “Well, lunch is important. Though I fear I ain’t got no fancy titles to keep up with you in that regard. Guess we will just have to settle with a nice little fight instead,” she noted, then nodded to Lucario when the round was declared started.

The other got the note right away deciding to start up this time with a Sword’s Dance, assuming already that the Beedrill would come to them anyway. Then, they could try and welcome it with a nice little Meteor Mash welcoming committee of punches.

The Steel typing would mean that Poison Jabs and Twineedles would not be helpful against the foe without some work. Queen Zing had a secret weapon that she could use for her stings to penetrate metal, but it would take a more drastic attack first. It was an attack she had no desire to unveil just yet.

Instead, the Beedrill remained on the defensive, churning her wings loudly and creating a TAILWIND behind herself, propelling her incredibly fast for a bug-type. Were the Lucario standing at an incorrect angle, the wake they produced might knock it off its feet!

So, they both went for boosting, huh. The opponent did not even try to get close and Lucario was too heavy and experienced to be blown away just by a Beedrill flying around at high speeds. Still though, it was buffeted by the winds, resulting in losing a Vital Point.

Megan sighed. It really could not be helped, now could it? Best not waste any more time. The enemy was trying to go fast, so it felt only natural that they should try and do the same. Activating her mega accessory, she gave Lucario a lightshow and a boost, so that he could try and close the gap with an Extreme Speed and hit the fast bee.

With dizzying speed, the Lucario closed the gap in an instant, Mega Evolving and clobbering Queen Zing from behind. Shalin grumbled as she raised her hand to the Key Stone of her MEGA CIRCLET, likewise transforming her Pokémon into her apex form. Two could play at that game!

While she could not fully match the foe's speed advantage, she could get as close as possible. The loud, low drone from her humming wings slicing the air would be complemented by a whirring noise from her four foreleg stings, pointed in the Lucario's direction. They spun fast as a Rhydon's horn, the ramming DRILL RUN designed to bore through the fighting-type's metallic armor and expose flesh vulnerable to her rear stinger.

So, they were both going mega, eh. Well, that was to be expected. Anyone who did this many matches as the other apparently had done was some kind of battle maniac. She had seen Z-moves, Terra, Mega, just about everything.

Hence, this was not shocking or something. Of course it wasn’t. She’d done exactly that, after all. Plus, they just had to deal with it anyway. That was probably the safest way to put it.

After all, Lucario had caught up and clobbered the other, but after catching up in terms of mega evolution, the other hit with a drilling attack that dug in well into the plates. Lucario did its best by leaning away from the attack instead of trying to stand hard against it, but it still took some damage. Undeterred, though, and now being sideways of the other, it used its other hand to summon up an Aura Sphere and hit the bee with it at point blank range.

The AURA SPHERE was a completely unavoidable attack. As long as its target had an Aura, which was nearly every living thing, it would strike without fail. There was little use in trying to outrun it; her wings would give out eventually from the breakneck pace she would need to keep, and when she reverted from her apex form, she would be a sitting Ducklett from coming off the Infinity Energy high. She needed to end the match now.

Raising her rear FELL STINGER, she jabbed it toward one of the holes she had created in the Lucario's armor. If it were to meet with the soft flesh beneath the steel-type's outer layer of skin, such a blow would surely be match-ending.

A certainly match-ending strike, if it connected indeed. It would have been a shame, had it been impossible to occur because of some sort of higher power mandating that a conclusion could not yet be reached. Hence, it was all but pre-determined fate that the attack would not connect the way it should, instead reaching only one of the intact plates as the two opponents disengaged by means of gravity.

After all, dogs did not fly. They could only jump really well sometimes. Hence, Lucario tried to land one last hit with a Close Combat before it had to focus on landing once again as the mega energy left them both behind.

Having reverted from her apex form, Queen Zing's rear stinger could no longer reach deep enough to strike soft flesh. She wasn't out of weapons, though! The wasp let herself get grabbed by the Lucario, who socked her in CLOSE COMBAT. It was all to land a counterblow that not even Megan might see coming.

The Beedrill rapidly churned her wings again, producing a howling TAILWIND. Its purpose was far more sinister than to blow the Pokémon off its feet. The force behind her blindingly fast wingbeats caused her entire body to vibrate violently, threatening to rattle the metallic foe if it didn't let go right away!

A rattle, huh? Megan was not quite sure just what she was watching there. A Tailwind, sure, but used by someone who was caught. Lucario looked just as perplexed. It was vibrating a lot and definitely uncomfortable, but he had just punched it, not grabbed it, so he simply moved backwards, getting some distance just due to the weirdness of it all.

One never held onto any kind of bee, after all. That was just asking to get stung.

Still though, apparently the friction of the wings had done enough to drain a vital, unlike what the Close Combat had dealt. Megan did seem a bit confused. After all, theirs had been a resisted move, sure, but a Tailwind should not do more damage than that.

But she shrugged. No point in worrying about that, in particular. This whole tournament was weird. “Uhm, thanks for the battle, I guess. Don’t take it the wrong way, I am just still trying to grasp just how the scoring works here,” she shared, shrugging, before recalling Lucario for now. Just in case he insisted to fight more or something like that.
