Picking Through The End

The song was no funeral dirge, no elegy of loss, no chorus of angels; it was energetic, upbeat. It was unexpected…and yet, can anyone truly say that wouldn't be what's waiting for them when their final moments have come? That it won't be what awaits them at the end?

"You have handled the song well," the Endsinger said. "I was correct to judge you as worthy. I will leave you to your duty, and I wish you good fortune on your search."

With that, the Explorer would feel the connection to the Endsinger cut, its voice gone from their mind. They were free to leave, on to their next point of interest: a region where a distress signal had been sent from some time ago.

Once their ship arrived, they would find the source of the distress signal - or what remained of it.

An entire space fleet, with ships far grander in size than the Explorer's - all drifting lifelessly through cold space, shredded apart from a grand battle. Not far off was a planet, one covered by what was once a grand civilization - but as the Explorer's scans would reveal, not a single living soul was on this planet, nor among the ship graveyard.

There was no-one to communicate with here…but perhaps some information could be gleaned through the wreckage, data logs that could further elucidate what happened here.

Though the Explorer would have to be careful: a ship graveyard could be just as perilous as a living fleet.

arriving at their destination brings kyle to a delicate space to maneuver around.

desolate as it was, the scrapyard still provides a bountiful exposition for the scene. narration doesn't need to explain anything to explain the story for the setting.

"alright, let's see what i have to work with..."

he studies the options he has. the simplest solution often is the best, and overthinking not only hurts his head, but also burns through his time.

kyle opts to pick for a weapon to shield his way through, using it in a manner that wasn't intended, but more or less kept its function. sunsteel strike.

as the weapon made out of this sci-fi alloy provide a good defense against debris, kyle decides to lean more into the fantasy aspect of the story and activates a move that he bases with the flavor more than the practical usage.

springtide storm. a radar based out of a move that operated with winds of love and hate sets out to search the area with anything that may radiate with it. it doesn't need to make scientific sense, kyle thinks, since this was just a story.

Reading Through The End

The debris would prove to be of little issue, the Spaceships's Sunsteel Strikes destroying and repelling anything in its path. And with a single use of the ship's Springtide Storm, the Explorer was able to pinpoint a particular of interest, where high levels of emotional energy could be detected.

It was a single strike craft, the smallest among all ships in this graveyard. It was in relatively good condition - its pilot even still resided within the cockpit.

Though no life-signs could be detected.

The ship's terminal was still in good shape - enough that the information within could be downloaded. It would be an easy task, as if it was deliberately set up as such.

What the Explorer would find, was a set of logs from the pilot.

Log 1

The warnings from the Vorcha Empire have proven true; our astrologists have detected something heading towards our star. I had to pull some favors for this info, but they're saying it's a mixture of organic matter and star matter. No other organism possesses such a molecular makeup.

But their analysis says that it's only 300cm tall? I don't know how something so small could be so dense.

And I don't know how, when I look at the night sky, I can see it approaching. The military is scrambling all resources to try and intercept it, before it can devour our star. They've even called me in.

And here I was, ready for retirement. Guess they're pushing that back again.

Log 2

All weapons have proven ineffective. Energy weapons, missiles, even ramming has failed to stop this thing. The only thing that got a reaction out of this monster was our admiral starting up The Cerebral's Perish Drive.

It didn't even have a chance to fully charge before the monster cut a hole through it with a beam of energy. My ship said it was a beam of pure solar energy.

I've lost contact with the rest of the fleet. They're all dead or gone. Either it didn't notice me or it doesn't care. My ship's sensors say the monster is in front of our star now. It hasn't moved since then. I don't know what to do.

And I think I can hear it talking to our star. It sounds angry.

Log 3

Our star is gone.

There's no point looking for survivors now. We focused so much on preparing for the monster that we didn't prepare any backups if we failed. We don't have the means to travel beyond our solar system, and our world is already starting to freeze over.

My ship doesn't have much air remaining. I'll leave my ship's terminal open so whoever finds this can read my messages.

You can't fight this thing. You either need to find a way to convince it to stop, or move solar systems the moment it comes your way. It's clearly going for stars for a reason, but I don't know what it is. Perhaps it'll find what it's looking for, or it'll gorge itself so much that it destroys itself.

Whatever happens, I wish you good fortune.

And at the end of time, let us meet as stars.

The logs ended there - and no further data logs could be found in the graveyard.

he blinks at the lore drop.

this was the kind of storytelling he likes, where emotions meant to be felt by the reader are subtle rather than forced. anger or sorrow would be the supposed responses for this kind of scenario, but kyle smiles fondly at the final gift left to him.

melancholy fills the cockpit of the ship as he sits in silence, taking in the last few messages left by the last knight of this solar system's kingdom.

"fighting it head on wasn't in the agenda anyways," he finally muses to himself, killing the stillness of the room. "don't worry soldier. your final words won't be in vain."

kyle closes the logs one by one, storing it in a folder made with the similar intent as the source. it may not matter since the story ends once he gets obliterated out of existence, and this universe only exists in this instance, but there was nothing wrong with playing his role as the explorer.

a quick rundown on what the ship can do is done, and he sets off to the next destination.

The Explorer made their promise, acknowledging the pilot's request; this threat wasn't one that could be stopped with brute force. No-one but the Explorer could hear their words - but it was the intent that mattered.

With the logs saved, the Explorer was off to their next destination.

Their next stop, was a system that had just had their star consumed. The planets that it once supported still grew colder, but it had never been one that could support life.

By all means, it would normally have been one that would simply be passed over - had there not been a strange signal detected in the area.

And upon closer observation, the Explorer would be able to find the source of the signal: a singular automaton, floating in space. It was small - smaller than the Explorer themselves.

It appeared to be damaged - but it was still able to actively emit a signal. Perhaps it could be repaired to get some information…

kyle really only had one option to fix it.

retrieving it was a matter of simple navigation. parking the ship nearby and having its functions take it in. it was a risk, but kyle goes with it anyways since there's no way the story would end abruptly with his death.

besides, he has countermeasures in play.

cosmic power from his ship attempts to gather the power of the stars, storing its energy on its own receptacle like a battery. the said energy converts to power that matches what the automaton would use, which even kyle cannot specify given the sci-fi elements of the story.

"and we're charging."

he sets up the charging station, hoping enough power would get it to activate its systems and allow the reinforcing properties of cosmic power to take over self-recovery functions of its software.

its shell and motor functions may be damaged, but that's something that can be repaired later.

Would You Like To Hear A Story?

Retrieving the automaton was an easy task, and the Explorer sought to charge the construct utilizing a Cosmic Power, channeling the power of the sun. It wouldn't take long for the automaton to be charged.

It reactivated, its body and limbs jerking around, as if trying to test the limits of its own mobility. However, while its eyes were equipped with lights, they did not light back up.

Yet it faced towards the Explorer, its head snapping towards them. And their ship soon received a message, being read out.

Solar Energy detected-ed.

Eros, is that you? Have you come to your sense-senses?

There was a brief moment of pause, the automaton seeming to struggle to move out of the makeshift charging station it was within.

Come back with me-me, Eros.

I can tell you that story you love-_love-^love-_love-^love-love.

There was another pause.

I am sorry, Eros. I think my core is damaged. But it is ok-ok-ok-ok.

I am not angry with you. I just might need to go to sleep-sleep-_sleep soon.

There was no knowing how much longer it would remain functional; the kind of damage this automaton had sustained would need specialized work and equipment - far more than what the Explorer had on hand.

eros...

he keeps the name in mind. though it doesn't seem like it'd be a useful piece of information at the moment, keeping it close to heart means bonus points for immersion.

the explorer approaches the mechanical being.

"tell me the story, please," he urges the automaton. "please. i want to remember why i love it."

the request was less of a need to extract information, and more of sympathy for the weary. kyle, of course, would always argue it was the former.

How Are Stars Made?

"Your voice is different…but I am glad you are talking again, Erosssssssssssssssss."

The automaton took a moment, gears grinding louder than they probably should've. A low hum resounded from its body, before a recording sounded out from its body - fortunately, without the interruptions the automaton's voice had moments ago.

"Stars grant us life, warmth, and light. They grow the food that we eat, and they power much of what we rely on to exist. Without them, we would never have life - but few know that without us, stars could never exist."

"For when our lives have reached their end, and the light fades from our eyes, we return to dust - and that dust carries its way through the cosmos. This is the stardust that gives birth to new stars - and those stars allow life to thrive anew."

"So when you look upon the night sky, always remember: the stars that shine were once like you and your loved ones. Though our lives may end one day, it merely means that we reach a brand new beginning."

"In time, we will all be reunited. We may not know when that time will be…"

"But one day, we will meet again as stars."

The automaton went quiet again, before its voice returned to the same glitchy state as before.

"Please, Eros. I know her time sooner than expectedededededed."

"But consuming the stars won't bring her baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-"

The Explorer's Spaceship would inform them that the Automaton's core systems were failing.

he lets the automaton's perception of its surroundings fail, standing by its side as its' lights dimmed with the stars of the story.

he turns to a panel, assuming it's an interface for a sci-fi ship that takes voice commands.

"run a scan and check if creating a backup is possible," he orders the system. "if not, well, a recording of the final message is fine."

he remembers each word, taking it as ammo for their final destination.

if the ship does act similar to the pokemon it is modeled after, necrozma's influence on his solgaleo is to become an inspiration for its light-related capabilities. this is fiction, and even if the source material couldn't do it, artistic freedom can be used to stretch a simple relationship to an actual reality in a make-believe world.

"let's meet up with eros afterwards."

Found Your Quarry

With what precious time was left, the Explorer did what they could to preserve the automaton.

And sure enough, they would find that they could, indeed, create a backup of the automaton - but the coding and design of this construct was far different than any design they had encountered before. It didn't match any modern designs, and it likely couldn't be supported by any modern systems, let alone by the Explorer's Spaceship.

But that did not mean it was lost forever. Perhaps with time, in some way, some form, it could be remade. It may not be exactly as it once was, but it could come back.

And the story it shared had been recorded, in case the Explorer needed it for reference.

Their next destination would be their last: in the direct path of the star-consuming thing.

They need only take that step forward - and ready themself.

Their Spaceship exited the jump, to a star system that was rather barren. There was no grand entrance waiting for them, no welcoming committee to herald their arrival. Just them, the star…

And the being gradually approaching the star.

It would be hard for the Explorer to gauge its distance, for it didn't seem to be moving at all. Yet their ship's sensors would indicate it was indeed moving through space: it was mainly made of star matter, and yet, there was still some organic matter in its composition.

The being didn't seem aware of the Explorer and their Spaceship - or if it was, it didn't bear them any mind.

intuition tells him one thing, and that every part of the story should be connected one way or another. there's no way they were going to introduce another element so late to the game.

this is where the automaton's message comes into play, he tells himself.

it doesn't matter if the being doesn't recognize him, but a voice of someone that cares about them should give it a reaction. whether that was positive or negative was something that future kyle can handle later.

"play the last message," he instructs the voice-activated systems.

"Please, Eros. I know her time sooner than expectedededededed."

"But consuming the stars won't bring her baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-"

confidence about his decision crumbles when he realizes that a sequel was a possibility and the narration can equally support a cliffhanger for the next book by bringing another element into play.

Near Yet Far

The Explorer played the recording they'd made of the automaton's words - ones that spoke a name, and an urging to stop consuming the stars of this galaxy.

In the vast emptiness of space, sound could not carry. By all means, unless the Explorer possessed a psionic ability to speak into another's mind, there would have been no way for them to share this message with this being.

Yet their Spaceship's sensors would indicate that the being had stopped its approach upon the star. They would be able to see the creature turn, like a startled animal.

And their ship would tell them that the being was approaching their ship. It would be impossible to tell by sight alone - it didn't seem to change in size as it approached their ship, but it was definitely getting closer.

They had been heard.

It was a fast approach - the being was soon circling around the Explorer's spaceship - still just as large as it'd seemed from thousands of kilometers away. It seemed so much smaller than its presence dictated, so much smaller than the logs they'd read indicated.

"You are not Celedones," it said to the Explorer - its voice carrying through space, reverberating through the Explorer's Spaceship. "What are you? How do you speak with its words?"

the scene gets kyle's goosebumps up. this is a good cinematic scene for the conclusion of the story's driving force and showcases the myriad of emotions the reader can take from this very scenario.

fear from being faced with the entity responsible for the world's conflict.

excitement from the broken expectations of the interaction between the explorer and the antagonist.

sadness from the tragedy that befall the android and the eros.

empathy from the humanization based on its words.

joy from being a part of an experience that not everyone will be able to meet.

his heart beats fast for knowing that his actions will have consequences. there might be no right or wrong decision from this, but the presentation of freewill that dictates whether his character lives or not based on his decision keeps him on his toes.

kyle decides to be honest to his character, forgoing the bad and good ending for the true ending.

"i am but an explorer of darkness, tasked to stop an impending destruction brought by the eater of worlds."

"i found them on my ventures to look for the source. these are their last words before they expired. unfortunately, my ship is not equipped to bring her back."

"i've taken them in from the asteroid belt i found them in so she can at least sleep peacefully. would you want to see what remains of her?"

depending on the answer, kyle would prepare to bring her out. it as a risk given all facts present from the documentation of the death of stars, but he tells hangs on the silver lining of his brashness.

the death of the main character is still an interesting ending for a story regardless of the majority's perception of it.
