Jayden Cross's idea of 'training' was a little intense.

When Howard thought of training, he thought of working out at the gym, maybe throwing a few hands, and getting his ass thoroughly kicked in the ring by Tempest Quinn. When Jayden thought of training, it tended to involve running through the streets of Sootopolis while getting chased by Chien-pao, or something equally heinous.

Like going into a simulated universe, for example.

"Why're you like this, Cross?" Howard groaned as he turned to Jayden. From atop the sandbar, Howard's cowboy hat and vest rippled in the searing wind. "Can we go back to the offices? I need to sign off on four shipments of Nihilego toxin. That shit's expensive, man."

Behind the duo, Regice stood, still damaged from its scuffle with Palkia and Chi-yu. It beeped weakly, braille pattern flickering. Yet from it, the scorching desert heat became pleasantly cool.

"Can we go back? Please?"

howard slayte's training was going smoothly. While it was not as easy as an endeavor as it had been when he had trained mint frost — mostly due to the fact that Howard had a much more rigorous schedule than he had planned for the Beast — everything was aligned as it should have been.

[break][break] So when howard slayte groaned in complaint, Jayden was genuinely surprised.

[break][break] "Like what?" Ignorant as ever to the obvious plight's of the other poor admin. "We will get back to the offices soon. Right after this."

[break][break] "Aren't you curious about the simulation that you helped create?"

[break][break] If memory served correct, at least, howard slayte was apart of Amor Rose's TEAM NEBULA.

[break][break] Once again, howard slayte asked for a reprieve.

[break][break] "No," Jayden said simply.

[break][break] With a sharp whistle, he leaped off the sandy bank to CHARGE into battle. CHIEN PAO raced beside him, releasing an onslaught of RUINATION.

"I had no part in this world's construction." Howard sighed as his damage Regice blinked weakly behind him. "I'm hopeless with technology."

Amor could take the credit for this simulated universe. The RKS Simulation was simply a great tool for academic study and for the training of new Rockets. It could generate many different simulations, several of which could be studied or trained in. It was simply another asset for Rocket, like the Chien-pao or Regice.

There is a tool for every task, and a task for every tool.

"Let's hop to it, then." Howard sighed and snapped his fingers. Regice beeped weakly, several cracks lining its Clear Body as it moved to intercept the futuistic machines with a freezing Blizzard. As machines froze and Ruin reigned, the dunes began to churn.

Quicksand? No. Howard recognized this.

"Orthworm! Jayden!" Howard shouted as they began to sink down. His eye went wide with fear. "I don't want to die! Jayden! JAYDEN!"

Even though this was a simulation, Jayden knew that the events within it could feel just as raw as reality. As a result, he had prepared for a great many things.

[break][break] As RUINATION reigned true across the battlefield, knocking back several of the whirring mechanical beasts, it almost seemed like they would weigh on the side of victor.

[break][break] However — as prepared as he was, the admin had not prepared for the world to melt under his feet.

[break][break] His heart gave a sudden lurch, echoed by the sound of howard slayte's screams.

[break][break] 'We aren't dying,' Jayden thought to say, but his mouth suddenly wouldn't work. It was filled with sand.

[break][break] He reached, grappled really, for howard slayte's hand.

[break][break] Like true Rockets, if they had to die, then they would die together.

A samsara, fated to repeat.

"Huh?" Howard opened his eye. He looked at the hand clasping his, and at the man who had reached for it. He let it linger for a moment, before disgust welled up in his soul like an overflowing sieve. His hand slipped free of Jayden's grasp.

Howard Slayte was not the person the pillar that Jayden Cross sought.

"What the...?" Howard looked around until he saw Eternatus fly overhead. He remembered this scenario. The Skeleton Gigantic, written of on the walls of the Island Cave where Regice had been stored. "Jayden, come on. We need to pick a weapon."

He took the man's hand and pulled them through the simulation. Regice screamed at the dragon flying overhead.

He blinks the sand away from his eyes.

[break][break] The desert's cold winds don't greet them, but neither does death. When the admin opens his eyes, he sends the endless sprawl of the night-time sky and he is reminded of staying on the cool grasses of Sootopolis hill, right after Father Winter 2 had shoved him and fern delaney into that endless dreamscape.

[break][break] He turns his head, finding his side empty. howard slayte has already fled from his grasp.

[break][break] Jayden pushes himself to his feet, trying to make sense of their surroundings, only to recognize that the simulation has warped into the shape of two metallic stones tablets. The same that he had seen with Zev Harcourt.

[break][break] To him, the answer is simple.

[break][break] He doesn't even need howard slayte's touch to know it.

[break][break] "One day, you won't be worthless."

[break][break] It's a promise.

[break][break] Slipping out of the other admin's hold, Jayden seizes the hilt of the sword with both hands. With a swift, effortless pull, he wrenches the sword from its sheath, causing it to shimmer brilliantly in his grasp, casting his entire body in a radiant glow.

Absorbing the nearby metals strewn across the battlefield, the Zacian ascends to its regal form. As the Fairy King's Sword, the gilded Zacian beckons for you to fight alongside it.[break][break]

As the simulation shifted slightly, Howard stared at Jayden. He said nothing, his jaw agape, as war raged around them.

"You're unbelievable. I get why you're an admin." The words aren't demeaning. Instead, they're words born of realization. Howard hated Jayden. He hated him for his rank, for his crimes, for everything he had done. Yet in this moment, that rage vanished like morning dew.

"It's because you genuinely believe in others."

Admin Bee brought out the best in Rocket's image.

Admin Delaney brought out the best in replicas.

Admin Fox brought out the best in Rocket's finances.

Admin Cross brought out the best in Team Rocket's members.

He alone was invaluable. Howard wanted to hate him, and yet... Yet... It'd be easier of Jayden was just another mad dog. It was easier when he was Chien-Pao's puppet, a blade without a sheathe. When he was less than human, it had been easier to deal with him.

But there were dreams. Hopes. Why did Jayden have to believe in him, of all people? It'd be better if Howard were back in his office, signing papers.

While his thoughts were jumbled, Zacian descended from the heavens. A hero emerged in the defense of the world.

[break][break] To Jayden, there was no reason that he should believe otherwise. To be chosen by Rocket, to have others choose to join them, was the only test that he cared about. After that, it meant little to nothing who they were or what they were. To those like Jayden, they were Rocket and that was what mattered.

[break][break] That was what had always mattered in his own life, at least.

[break][break] He believed that everyone had the potential for greatness, just because they had been chosen by the same organization that they called home.

[break][break] In the sky, Eternatus commands the heavens by conjuring shadows of nightmare, pulsing dark clouds that mingle with poisonous arrows. A fabled hero emerges, yet forced to stand on the cusp as the two admins speak. Jayden's gaze does not waver from his fellow admin's.

As Zacian waged its war with the Eternatus that soared above, Regice fought alongside its Galarian counterpart. The hero and the golem were nothing alike. They were different, but their circumstances were the same.

They were designed to fell a god, and one day that would come. Zacian would fight alongside its sibling and Regice would fight alongside its four fellow constructs. Separate, they could barely keep Eternatus away. Together? Together they would kill it. Only the fruit of human wisdom could bring down the divine.

The absurdity of Jayden's question made the admin laugh.

"Because I love Rocket. You have given me opportunities I couldn't get anywhere else." A Hyper Beam fired from Regice shook the earth and sky. "Don't put too much stock in my ambition, though. I did not reach this position."

The admin's eye flashed.

"I was offered it."

Along Regice and Zacian, it's not Chien Pao that races alongside them. No, in this alternate space, a devil has no means. Troublesome human emotions have no place in such digital planes.

[break][break] Instead, it's his ghost pokemon that rise to defend. Spectral shadows rise in the shape of GENGAR, HAUNTER and GASTLY, rushing after the Dynamaxed beasts with DARK PULSE and SHADOW BALL.
