The suspicion in her emerald gaze darkened with visible calculation, resolving at last as comprehension dawned. He'd see the red flare of anger flush through her pale skin as she glowered at him, while her lips twisted into a hateful sneer.[break][break]

He couldn't mean what she suspected he meant. He wouldn't dare.[break][break]

Longer and longer the silence stretched between them, thick with palpable tension, before suddenly she broke it with laughter.[break][break]

"Is that all?"[break][break]

The sneer smoothed itself into a cat-like smile, her expression relaxing as she shrugged. An amused glint sparkled in her eyes as she regarded him one last time, entertained by a joke only she understood.[break][break]

"Spider lilies, Beckett. Blood-red spider lilies."[break][break]

She didn't wait for her dismissal as she stalked out the door, the click of her heels punctuating that answer before the decisive slam of the office door shuddered behind her.
