Her thoughts on him had become muddied on two accounts, regarding two admin: jayden cross and BARNABY FINCH. She told herself her irritation was equally spread across those two reasons, but deep down, she knew this was not the case.[break][break]

Building an outpost with him felt insufferably and excruciatingly dull. Thankfully, her Tsareena's POWER WHIP was dragging along her part of the load just fine with her hulking Venusaur.[break][break]

The fact she'd been the one to steer them to this conversation topic briefly went forgotten as her hand irritably ran through her blonde hair, turning away to glower at nearby shadows. "Please tell me you didn't dirty any of the essential areas of the submarine."[break][break]

More horrible realizations swam to the surface, like snakes writhing for her unhappy attention. Had they fucked in Admin Bee's office, or in Theo's? Had it happened in his Mauville penthouse? Had he slept in the same bed with him that she had?[break][break]

Was BARNABY FINCH telling THEO BECKETT the same things he was telling her, or was this just sex?[break][break]

And how many others were there, besides Theo? If there were any others.[break][break]

Visible distress overcame her at this, followed by a brief wave of nausea she soundly repressed. It would be best to stop asking questions now.[break][break]

"It doesn't," she cut him off sharply, shoving him aside to stalk ahead. The darkness wavered in front of her, and she could feel the ochre eyes of her patron still keeping her in their sight, the nearby shadows shaking with silent laughter. "I don't own him."[break][break]

A free-falling despair had taken hold of her, followed by a horrifying realization: she'd almost let someone own her.[break][break]

Hadn't she intended, after abandoning MATIAS SILPH to his fate, to stay faithful to BARNABY FINCH?[break][break]

This subconscious decision wasn't something she'd examined all that closely, but the more she delved into her sense of betrayal in this moment, the truer that revelation seemed.[break][break]

And some part of her had, without thinking, assumed he wanted the same.[break][break]

"It's been you and me for years, mon fleur. You've had my heart and my trust for a long time now."

She'd believed him wholeheartedly in that moment. She still believed him, or wanted to -- but what did that make this fly in the ointment, then? There was no reason for THEO BECKETT to lie to her about what he'd done with Admin Bee.[break][break]

Besides, Barnaby had never promised her anything to make that possibility a betrayal in any real sense of the word. There were no vows of fidelity he'd broken, were there? She was the one being unreasonable. She was the one putting unfair boundaries between them, holding him to imbalanced standards he'd never agreed to.[break][break]

Still. His unbridled amusement at her situation with Matias had such a different shade of color to it now.[break][break]
