it was a big day. her first trip down into the giant chasm, where unknown threats lurked. she packed her best team – though her scheduled company meant she would already have plenty of muscle backing her up.[break][break]

jayden had taken to her in a friendly way apparently, offering gifts on holidays that she’d felt it necessary to reciprocate. she remained mostly confused, though assumed it was related to his relationship with Cillian Quinn .[break][break]

she waited for him at the chasm’s edge, wondering just as much about the destructive ruinous beast Amor Rose had told her about as she did the mysterious world hiding below.[break][break]

Ignorant to the perfectly innocent — and in his opinion, perfectly appropriate — gifts that had a toll on the scientist's mental, Jayden happily accompanied Lulu Flint in her first excursion. He had wanted to go himself — and probably would later — but for the moment being, he at least planned to try and obey his mentor's teachings.

[break][break] "It is nice to be able to accompany you on something outside the simulation," he said conversationally, appearing by the chasm's edge. Compared to others who may have been donned in official gear, Jayden wore just as little he had on the day of the raid — a sleek muscle shirt that kept him more flexible than it did warm, black pants, and hiking boots gifted to him by one howard slayte last Christmas. Or more accurately, hiking boots that he'd purchased with the helpful Christmas bonus, procured by Rocket's finest new finance admin.

[break][break] Jayden glances at Lulu Flint, reminded of the same moment that parker jones had offered a hand to him. Except that had been doused in grease and sauce from inhaling a festival treat. In contrast, the Rocket scientist's palm was noticeably clean.

[break][break] He reaches for her hand, not yet realizing the touch that such contact would imbue, before plunging down into the chasm.

[break][break] Whether or not she follows, the Cursed leaped down the wall effortlessly. Ice crystals glistened under his heel, forming a smooth slide into the shadowy depths. He maneuvered expertly around the rocky outcrops, gliding effortlessly like a shadow gliding over moonlit waters, rather than a mountaineer scaling the wall.

once on the ground, she was far more concerned with him than the landscape that surrounded them. she yanked back her hand, shoving him away as roughly as she could muster.[break][break]

”what’s your problem!” she snapped.[break][break]

”do you think we’re friends? you think just because my brother likes you that i like you too?” her tone wasn’t just cold. it was downright venomous, to a degree that was unlike her. ”he found new family when i left. i can see that.”[break][break]

she glared, hatred burning there in amber eyes.[break][break]

reacting to her aggression, shade growled and lunged for jayden, too quick for lulu to stop him.[break][break]

Ice wears away into rock and then eventually, into spring. Green grass and flowers spread finely across the earth where they land in the middle of the chasm but it appears that it is still winter that exists in Lulu Flint's eyes — from the way she looks at him.

[break][break] He flinched. Even after all this time, the mere sound of the man's name was enough to make emotion flicker onto his face.

[break][break] "If I remember correctly, weren't you the one to leave Rocket?"

[break][break] Jayden didn't know all the details. He just knew that Lulu Flint was the one to step away from Rocket, to disappear from it. He was glad she was back in the same way that he would be glad anyone else was back.

[break][break] "What is —" Before he could question her further, suddenly the world seemed to close. It felt uniquely like something he had felt before, yet something he still could not name. Maybe it was something similar to the ancient tomb. Maybe it was similar to illeana reyes dragging the world under his feet.

[break][break] His chest felt tight. Like he couldn't breathe.

[break][break] Jayden crumpled to the floor, almost as if this feeling he felt was something he was more perceptive to than other people. As if Chien Pao's influence on him had town away the barriers around his heart, chipped away everything that remained. It made things like HATRED more susceptible...

[break][break] But also FEAR.

[break][break] He gasps, hand clutching at his chest.

[break][break] "I don't - I can't -"

[break][break] The Cursed suddenly felt like he was in a closing room, once again. Snow rippled around him, lashing outwards, as the feeling inside of him grew. Thin ice swirled around him in gentle snow flurries as a sudden pang of HATRED aimed to combat the debilitating emotion that pressed him against the floor.

no answer came for him. she suffered in silence, at first muzzled by the strange fear, until she could eventually manage a dry whisper, "you feel it too?"[break][break]

He can barely hear it.

[break][break] The FEAR that encompasses his heart is all too crushing, reminding him of the feeling in that cavernous ice, right before Chien Pao had attacked. But there, Chien Pao had saved him. He had empowered him with HATRED, infused into his veins, granting him the power that he had always sought but never known how to ask for.

[break][break] As the cold flurries around him escalated, so did the crater in his heart grow. He thought about all the things that THEO BECKETT had told him to do, the very things that Chien Pao desired from him that he could not have. Dmitri. MATIAS SILPH. PENELOPE LIVY. The League. Everyone who had left, just like Lulu Flint had left Cillian Quinn. Just like Chu-e Choi had left him.

[break][break] Jayden eventually stumbled to his feet, but this time, when he looked at Lulu Flint, it was not with the emptiness of an admin who knew better. An admin who thought of Lulu Flint as family.

[break][break] It was of the fiercest white winter, gleaming glacier-blue behind sprawling fields of endless green. The sounds of something predatory cawed in the air, echoing across the chasm's cavernous walls.

[break][break] "You left him," he said instead, pointing accusingly at her. "You left Cillian. You left us."

[break][break] "You know all about disappearing — you wrote the book on it."

[break][break] And it was then that Chien Pao appeared behind him, because it was only then that his God desired him the most.

Lulu Flint steps towards him, all fire and lightning, and Jayden responds to her in turn, his face crackling with the power of the hatred that surges through his veins.

[break][break] In the past, Jayden may have cowered under the presence of such self-righteous anger. But Chien Pao steps forward, fur crackling with static-electricity, as the hatred surges through the boy's blood and into his own.

[break][break] His eyes crackled like blue thunder.

[break][break] The storm raging around him unleashed it's fury, choking him with emotion, as his veins were encased in it's icy grip. FEAR intertwined with HATRED, piercing the admin like a relentless blade, poisoning every good thought. Memories flashed before him — hours spent poring over Rocket's files after Cillian Quinn's revelation, hours of grappling with paperwork that explained the pain that his brother had experienced, the empathy and torment of knowing how deeply the Underboss had suffered at the hands of his family's betrayal.

as vengeful as she was, she’d never sought vengeance on Cillian Quinn . she’d only looked to prove a point, that she was capable too – but look how she’d fallen. it stung.[break][break]

shade charged for chien pao recklessly, baring teeth, while his owner did not relent either.[break][break]

the truth only made her feel more inadequate. to think she’d once been proud of his leaving left her with too much shame to swallow gracefully now.[break][break]

[break][break] His own blood brother, Alexei Volkov, was a far-cry from what a sibling should've been. In many ways, he wielded cruelty far better than any one knew, perhaps more volatile and vicious than those who had struck a hand against Jayden in the name of "love". fern delaney had seen such cruelty for himself, warping prisons and dreams in the interdream mist.

[break][break] It was why he cared so deeply for Cillian Quinn, and exactly what he had done from him. He hadn't just saved him from Dmitri, from Rocket — he'd saved him from himself.

[break][break] "It's time to think about what you want."

[break][break] The rage surged like a relentless sea, unleashing a tempest of blazing ice into the air. In his uncontroleld state, when he gazed at Lulu Flint, he no longer saw the esteemed science that he had revered for years; instead, he saw only the woman who had inflicted pain upon his brother, the same one that had been the only person to hold a hand out for him when he'd thought all was lost.

[break][break] His own face was reflected in her eyes as she lunged for him, her hands closing around his throat. The suddenness of her assault sent him reeling, his footing faltering as he crashed backwards against the snow.

[break][break] But he wheezed, weakness flooding him at her touch. Because although the hateful storm swirling around them both was of his own creation, the Cursed found himself equally consumed by it, gasping for air as if drowning in it's depths.
