he smiles, and then chuckles, and ends with a laugh. a gentle nudge with his fist shakes matias back to face reality instead of the hypothetical.

"the solution's easy then."

he doesn't need to put it into words. matias has weighed in himself the consequences of the act and what he has to give up for a shred of power.

"if you're scared, just run away," he tells him. "what's stopping you?"

he already ran away from his engagement. he tried to run away from the consequences of his actions by avoiding surveillance. even now, he's trying to run away from his fate.

groudon wouldn't allow it, but matias will still try.

not consuming the RED SHARD would mean forsaking the power and future of a warm, promised land, but he would be placed in a far better position within the league and possibly his friends in return.[break][break]

he answers, pretending that matias wouldn't take his word as law.

"groudon is going to force it one way or another. the worst case scenario is death. we already know how easy it is for groudon to throw away its avatars."

the previous champion wasn't even able to resist as much as matias did, as unlike her, matias has somehow managed a compromise that allows him to resist a surge of primal energy from his patron.

"but that is a kyle answer. i'm weak anyways. i don't want to die."

his shoulders give way to a shrug as he turns to matias.

"you aren't afraid of death though. you'll have a different answer."

though he says it with a chuckle, he knows that kyle lopez is right. even if matias is to deny groudon the RED SHARD, the next avatar won't have the mental fortitude to do the same, nor will they even have the strength to survive as long as he has.[break][break]

he arrives at a conclusion, then, but the foundations of it are shaky, prone to change at any given moment.[break][break]

"i haven't tried it yet," he answers.

there's no certainty when it comes to it. the answer was always clear to him, but it was nothing but a gut feeling planted on him by the false optimism of ho-oh's influence.

kyle was someone who runs on logic more than feel, however.

"ho-oh's legends only mentions its ability to bring others back to life. never did it say that it can do it to itself."

his weakness comes from fear of taking risks, and complacency with what he was comfortable with. he's trying to overcome them on his own, but at the end of the day, he's only human.

"i don't think i want to risk it."

"would you die," kyle opens up, "if it's for the greater good?"

a controversial question that answered itself during the trip to the cloud with malcadena's final act. matias and kyle had not volunteered, showing a side that wasn't entirely selfless.

he laughs.

"looks like you got your composure back."

he knows that there's still worry and dread underneath the friendly banter he throws back at him. for a man who can only live by going forward and ignoring the weight of his own sins, it will never be gone.

but the fog in his head has cleared. he is ready to make decisions in accordance to his nature once more.

"unlike you, i actually know how to get myself out of my own mess," he banters back. "maybe i'll help you out too as long as you don't stab me in the back."

they had talked about it before. matias swore that, unlike every other friend or love interest he had, he would never drive a knife into him. back then, part of him didn't actually believe it.

the lighthearted note of his dark humor provides a glimpse of the future to come.

kyle's emerging hero complex has progressed into an ability to UPLIFT THE SPIRITS of willing people around him.
