“Honestly, it’s all very confusing,” she admits, hesitant to do so, but she didn’t feel the need to sugar coat it for Matias. She is a doctor, a biologist, and medic, not a physicist. All this time traveling and alternate dimensions was far above her pay grade. It took an incredible amount of extra research and time for her to get a grasp on it, making her job that much harder, “I imagine time as linear. If you go back in time in this reality, you’re still in this universe just further back. If you change anything, it creates a branch and that becomes a different universe,” she doesn’t sound wholly convinced of her own theories, “This could be from another universe, or it could be our own universe spinning itself back in time like a rewind on those old VCR’s.”

Unfortunately, she doesn’t disagree. Hoenn may be a mess, but it was their mess, and she’d have it no other way. She smiles, shaking her head, “And to think at one time I thought I wanted a boring, normal life,” that they could have a boring, normal life with a ranch and kids and a family. Dodged a bullet, there. She’d rather be challenged and unhappy than bored and unhappy.

As if to prove a point, space itself yawns open. The chilled wind rushes past them like a vacuum towards the waking eye of the DISTORTION WORLD. It opens wide, a chilling and ominous break in reality that stares at them with malicious intent, “Hooooly shit,” Eva plants her feet to fight against the vacuum, signaling the Porygon2 to start TRACING the anomaly. She stares hungrily at the sequence of jagged lines of the graph that appears on the screen - energy readings. It pulls her closer and she doesn’t fight it. The closer she gets, the more data she collects, adding fuel to the insatiable and greedy fire that is her desire for knowledge.

it's hard to imagine the life they'd once talked about. a life where the most troubling thing would be on how best to raise their children. matias would want to spoil them and play the good parent and eva would most likely want some form of structure, making her the bad parent.[break][break]

he wonders, as the DISTORTION WORLD yawns open, if such a life exists now in another universe.[break][break]

Eva has never been the Distortion World She has only studied it in theory at the behest of Katherine Fairburne. What little she gleaned was quickly forgotten in favor of the more urgent matters. She looks up from her tablet, fixing her gaze on the chaotic disruption of matter.

It envenomates her like a Nihelgo sting, petrified in place, a porcelain statue, fragile and lifeless. It pulls her closer like a magnet, feeding on the overwhelming dread that boils over in her chest. She wants to scream, but she can’t, so she screams inside while her body stiffens. His words seemed so small and they disappeared all together. Suddenly, she’s alone.

She’s worlds away, a cold, empty place. The silence echoes off the oppressive nothingness and it’s deafening. She can’t even hear herself scream for anyone to pull her back to reality. There’s no Area Zero, no tablet, no shrill of the paradox pokemon’s excitement as they rush towards the anomaly.

It’s just her, until it’s not.

A force pulls her back, strong and grounding. The nothingness disappears and then there’s everything all at once. She’s not alone anymore, there’s a familiar presence, “Matias?” she asks instinctually before she even registers it’s him. Eva snaps back to reality, blinking rapidly to clear her blurred vision and solidify the sight of him in front of her, “Wha- What were you saying?” she shakes her head to clear the hazy confusion as if nothing happened. She suddenly looks down at the tablet as if she just remembered what she was doing.

The patterns are failing, dissipating. She doesn’t have enough data, “No,” she lunges forward to move past him, salvage what she can.

There’s no stopping a mad woman. She’s driven by the addiction that is her work, her insatiable thirst to be better, to know more. There’s no other outlet to expend her energy, nothing and no one else to focus on.

When he grabs a hold of her, he’s met with the fury of a goddess. Wrong time, wrong place. Don’t get between a huntress and her prey. She snaps around with a swift motion that tears her arms free of his grasp, a furious golden flame burning in her eyes, “I don’t need your-!”

Help? Protection? The shifting of the earth cuts her short. In a frustrating turn of events the universe betrays her and she’s forced to cling to the only stable object that’s always caught her: Matias.

She reaches to grab onto his arm, his waist, anything as the violent quake sends her careening towards him. Eva’s forced to use both hands, and the tablet shatters against the rocky floor.

The levitated Porygon2 is unaffected by the sudden earthquake, but it teeters alongside them in the air to feel included in the drama.

She remains snug against him for a lack of a better option. Eva should certainly mind the intimacy, but she doesn’t seem to. When it’s all over, she stays against him. Not on purpose, but she finds herself wide eyed and in awe at the sudden appearance of the slow moving REGIROCK.

When addressed, she looks up at him with a rather blank stare. Eva’s eyelashes flutter as the whole scenario rushes back and she’s yanked into reality. She quickly lets go and takes a step back, cheeks flush with either embarrassment or residual annoyance. Her voice is hushed so as to not disturb the REGIROCK that seems to be ignoring them, “I don’t listen to many people, Matias,” so he was not special, nor an exception. If anyone knows a thing or two about stubbornness, it’s him.

She used to listen to him because he loved her. There was a mutual acceptance that they both held each other’s best interest at heart. At least, she believed that was true at a time. She’s still uncertain when that stopped being true for him, when his care for her faded into something so small it disappeared all together. Was it before The Border? After? Did it matter? No. This reality was still the same.

“I listen when there’s something worth listening to,” when it’s deserved, “Do you have something to say worth listening to?”
