There were two reasons Eddie found himself readily answering Matias' invitation to the Giant Chasm. [break][break]

First and foremost, he was worried about what exactly the other man was getting himself into. It wasn't doubt, exactly, that ate at Eddie on the way back down into the impossible landscape of the place. Matias could probably handle himself, being an Elite Four and all, and Eddie had no clue what kind of tricks he had up his sleeve. On the other hand, anyone could be caught off-guard by the horrors that laid in wait for an unsuspecting would-be adventurer. Eddie certainly had been, during his first trip into it's depths. The thought of Matias being in Eddie's place, half-dead among a sea of civilian casualties, made the older man's skin crawl. [break][break]

Second, Eddie found himself more eager than he'd care to admit to see the guy again. That was a dumb and childish thing to admit, so he didn't; just shoved the thought down anytime it popped up like an annoying jack-in-the-box. Just because Matias was nice to him once and agreed to a friendly (ha ha, yeah, friendly, Eddie continued to reassure himself) outing for coffee didn't mean anything. Eddie continued to mentally reiterate such points to himself as he greeted Matias with a warm smile, [break][break]

The cry that rang out through the Chasm was enough to make Eddie's heart jolt with a pang of fear. It was a reminder of the possible dangers they faced, of his own mortality. If Matias had adapted so readily to the perils of this place, Eddie hoped that he could follow suit a little more expediently, [break][break]

“Almost died,” Eddie replied, trying to keep his tone even and casual. The last thing he wanted to do was to start blubbering in front of the other man, “Was part of a volunteer crew tryin' ta set up an outpost, got torn to shit by one of those fuckin' monsters down here.” [break][break]

“Was lucky enough that a guy came by to check for survivors. Woulda ended up like the rest a'them otherwise.”[break][break]

but not unexpected or even unwarranted. the majority of volunteer crews are untrained civilians who may be capable trainers in their own right but that doesn't always translate well. in fact, it's more often than not a detriment.[break][break]

The older man nodded grimly. 'Different than battling' was right; Eddie considered himself a half-way decent trainer, sure, and physically strong to boot, but none of that mattered in a place like this. It was knowledge and resourcefulness that won out; none of the strength in the world mattered if some abomination got the jump on you first. [break][break]

“Hah, ya ain't kiddin',” Eddie chuckled mirthlessly. It was then that something occurred to him, “Speakin' of here, what'd ya call me out here for? Can't imagine it was for some kinda walk in the park.” [break][break]

Eddie's fingers idly grazed the Poke Ball at his belt. No, the Giant Chasm was certainly no place for a stroll; that's why he'd brought the big guns for this particular outing... or at least, he'd brought a Pokemon he could depend upon. Besides, the old bull needed a chance to stretch his legs.[break][break]

Eddie felt his hackles rise. He'd heard that Rocket had been working to establish their own outposts in the area, but he had been fortunate enough to have avoided any run-ins with the criminal organization so far. Truth be told, he held no specific ire for them outside of their dangerous criminality, but he'd be damned if some punks were going to get the jump on him or Matias,[break][break]

He unclipped the Poke Ball at his waist and called out his Tauros, the black bull appearing in a flash of light next to him, [break][break]

“Keep your eyes peeled, buddy,” Eddie murmured, patting the bull's thick mane. Beau snorted in affirmation, but paused a moment to eye his trainer's traveling companion. Oh, yeah, introductions were probably in order, [break][break]

“This is Beau, by the way,” Eddie said, gesturing from Matias to the Tauros, “Beau, this is Matias.” [break][break]

In another life, Eddie might have felt silly or childish for addressing his Pokemon as though it were a person; after all, he didn't want to be lumped in with the sort of crowd that take their Snubbuls or Fidoughs on trips around town in a baby stroller, fawning over them as 'fur babies'. But Beau was his friend, god damn it, and as such, there was a certain dignity the bull was owed. [break][break]

what he had originally intended for Eduardo Hisakawa and him was a nice, casual stroll through the GIANT CHASM, having accounted for interruptions in the form of paradox pokemon and the like, but not whatever this is that awaits them.[break][break]

while matias does not share the same sentiments with his pokemon, he can still appreciate it when others do with theirs. he regards the tauros with a nod.[break][break]

There was a flash of pride when Eddie recalled the VCT. He may not have come out on top, but he was damn proud of Beau's performance. They'd fought like hell, snagged some pretty sweet prizes, and even managed to break even on their win-loss ratio; not bad, as far as Eddie was concerned. [break][break]

But there were forces in these lands that didn't play by the structured rules found in competitive tournaments. They'd take every advantage they could get, fight dirty, do whatever it took to spill blood. Eddie was acutely aware of that now, [break][break]

“You got it,” he replied with an easy smile, “I might look like a meathead, but I ain't the kinda guy that goes around pickin' fights for no reason.” [break][break]

On rare occasions, he's just the one finishing them. Before he realized it, Eddie found himself reaching up and tracing his fingers over the scar that sliced through his brow, an old memento from what felt like a lifetime ago. [break][break]

He would have told Matias that he was full of shit for the first half of the compliment if his mind wasn't immediately derailed by the second half of it. This was the second time the man had complimented him on his looks; a coincidence, maybe, or maybe Eddie was desperately trying to label the interactions as such so he wouldn't have to unpack the implications of this guy possibly flirting with him. Oh God, when was the last time someone flirted with him? Should he be flirting back, or was he just completely overthinking things? He was probably overthinking things; there was no sense in getting worked up just because another man was being nice to him. He could feel his cheeks start to burn until Matias' voice snapped him out of it, [break][break]

“You got it,” he replied, tensing as he watched the plumes of the Rapidash's flames sail into the distance beyond them. [break][break]

Beau snorted and stamped a hoof, eager to challenge whatever foes lay in wait for them, though he paused a moment as his eyes passed a flicker of something golden in the grass before them. Eddie steeled his gaze as the horse sped off, ready for his marching orders from the other man, and maybe a little eager himself to prove that he'd been a worthwhile choice for this outing.[break][break]
