Paxton pulls away from the scope of his rifle, glancing up at hiss mission partner and beginning to stand up to greet him. It's still awkward between them, even after the mission investigating tera crystal on route. But one outing wouldn't fix years of absence. And luckily, Paxton was an expert at suppressing all of these thoughts while on business. [break][break]

"And you came." he aid before dusting off his pants. "You told me a while back you wanted first dibs on the DRK Triad in exchange for your help." he began before gesturing over at a point in the distance. "Got some intel they've set up shop down here. Much like us and Rocket, DRK Triad is doing it's own observations. We're gathering what we can from other points so this one is clear for disappearing." he explained. As he spoke he stopped suddenly a his heart seized and he felt something cold drip down hiss spine. He froze confused as his body was overwhelmed by fear from- from something. His eyes dart out to clearing searching for something other than the Triad as he shook uncontrollably for a moment before the feeling began to fade. "Shit-" [break][break]

In another time,. he might've asked Matias if they should see who could end their enemy the fastest. Now he shies away form it, not wanting to push too hard. Matias seemed to be dealing with too much to want to add Paxton to his problems. So for now, he hovers debating what the next best move is. Ever strategic. freya morningstar is right. He doesn't seem to have an off switch. [break][break]

"Shoot." He said with a huff of a laugh at the irony. Paxton checks his sight, watching the encampment before closing his eye for a moment. Hiss shoulders tense, as does his hands before relaxing. To anybody else he may have seemed like he was getting ready. To people like Matias, the shock was obvious. [break][break]

"Yeah." he said, eyebrows furrowing together a he picked his words with care. "I did everything I could to get my people out of there. To evacuate. But I couldn't get out the people that meant the most to me." His family dead and missing. His subordinates nothing but tags on his person. And CALLISTA MOON and MATIAS SILPH ? He figured that would be enough, but Matias stayed seated. Paxton pushed himself back to sitting, rubbing his eyes and letting them rest. "Like I told you before: Kanto was lost. By the time I arrived with what was left of us for evacuation, the League had lost almost all territory." Devastation had been fast, and ruthless. They'd kept up the fight but eventually were pushed back. "Like us, the rest of those left had no resources, no back up, and countless losses. To stay would've been suicide." He said. All points he'd screamed back at Matias and CALLISTA MOON , and even Eva Morales . Neither could have seen it. [break][break]

"I didn't want to lead those with me into a fight we wouldn't win." If he had led again like Callie had wanted him too, he doubted many would survive. Beaten down, sick and tired, he would've led them to death and been cursed to live through it. [break][break]

Paxton took pause, repeating all things he'd said as a leader trying to not just blindly believe in their cause, but work out a plan to succeed. He's not frustrated or angry like before. Now it's all year in the past. It's sad, but he doesn't shy away from it. What's more, he'd had other reasons to leave. [break][break]

"There was a chance part of my family survived Vermillion's fall. That they'd made it to Hoenn. So I left to find her. It took years for me to find her leads after I retired, and turned out I was right." He picked up a piece of tera crystal that had cracked off a specimen somewhere and rubbed the dust off of it. "I waited. I talked and moved everyone I could out of Kanto. I begged you to come with me." He pushed everybody he had left to leave. "Yeah." he confirmed with a small nod. "I thought you'd all die, and I didn't want to be there to see it." he said, turning over the piece of crystal in his fingers. "Maybe I was. Not very self sacrificial of me." [break][break]

Some time between then and now he's lost all of his ideals. Courage. Loyalty. Patriotism. Self Sacrifice. Things that had burnt and faded away, buried along with all those medals and tags. "I haven't felt much since then. I'm not the soldier I once was, not fully." Streaks of that man had appeared. With time and help. "Without realizing...I ended up back on the field. Working with council member, strategizing battlefields." He frowned. The him that had left Kanto would mock him too, having abandoned all those lofty dreams when he'd enlisted. To do good. Now he'd somehow ended up back where he'd s started, working for a better Hoenn. The fear of Kanto's fall looming over him, forcing him to do better, be better. "It's not all bad. I get to see you again, even briefly." [break][break]

"Maybe this is all I know." he said, echoing a entiment Matias shad expressed to him before. As much as he tried, he could never fall back into step ass that college kid eager to explore. He's stuck in his chosen rut now. "I fight for a future I can prevent with the experience I've been forced to gain." he corrected. Kanto needed it's urvivors to regroup, and recover before it could attempt to siege against Rocket. Numbers were down, morale was gone. "Don't you?" he asked. [break][break]
