Turning more towards Eddie now, allowing Higumei his space, giving him the opportunity to take in his surroundings, Yuina had to blink just a moment to get the misty feeling out of her eyes. She smiled all the same though, Eddie had more questions, she did thoroughly enjoy answering questions...[break][break]
"Well, there's only theories on that, about what makes the peat of their natural environment so special to Ursaluna. It could very well be that Ursaluna by themselves could cover themselves in peat and mud in order to create a barrier of sorts. However, there are no known attributes that make an Ursaluna a Bloodmoon Ursaluna," Yuina confirmed, a theory of her own that she'd come up with, after seeing Ursaluna in their natural habitat in the mirelands of Hisui.[break][break]
"Some say that there is a spirit that is present only during the height of a lunar eclipse, when the moon is red in the sky. Only the oldest, wisest Ursaluna are bestowed with the blessing of the spirit, their yellow moon symbol turing red imbued with power, and their minds expanding beyond the physical plane," Yuina described, there was no recording, no connection to anyone in history having ever seen an Ursaluna become or change into a Bloodmoon Ursaluna. It seemed to be a phenomena all its own, something more than evolution.[break][break]

Eddie puzzled over this new information. So the specifics weren't entirely understood, but Higumei was special even by special Hisuian bear standards. That made sense, and it was something that probably didn't warrant further questioning. [break][break]

And even if he'd wanted to, Eddie was distracted from his potential line of inquiry by shouting from nearby. There was an immediate flash of anger at words like 'thing' and 'monster' being hurled at the poor bear; Higumei was a god damn sweetheart, thank you very much, and these judgmental bastards just needed to see that, [break][break]

“Hey!” he called angrily as he marched over to Higumei's side, protective over a creature that easily dwarfed him in size and strength, “That ain't nice! He ain't a monster, he's a Pokemon, and he's a real nice one, too! You people never seen an Ursaluna before?”[break][break]

Well, probably not, but Eddie couldn't be bothered to consider that fact when he was so full of righteous indignation. He rested a hand gently against Higumei's flank, an unspoken gesture to reassure the creature that he was not something to be feared.[break][break]

Huffing with giant breaths, wavering on his large paws, Higumei didn't move forward at all as shouts were hurled their way, but the discomfort of the situation was clear in his stance. His head hung, he was swaying on his forelegs, unease building.[break]
The red moon on his head began to glow, there was more that Higumei was capable of feeling than just what came from the physical world, but as Eddie moved forward, a hand resting on the Ursaluna's fur, the glow ceased.[break][break]
The handful of onlookers that seemed most concerned with the presence of the unknown creature only sneered, some scurrying away as if expecting an imminent attack, but attention had been drawn either way. Eyes bore down on the small group, Higumei's discomfort was building, grunts coming from his maw, but Yuina moved forward too. She offered her hands first, Higumei's heaving breaths brushing over her before she took his head in her hands, putting herself between him and the handful of judgemental stares they were getting. She looked up to Eddie, her eyes broken, glancing around at those that regarded Higumei with such vitriol.[break][break]
"It's never easy... That's why I'm trying to do what I do... The fear of the unknown takes over so quickly, they won't stop to consider they might be wrong. Just like the Pokemon that are in the chasm... It's not their fault that they're here, or that they have the abilities that they do... They can be understood too, if someone cares enough to stop and learn," Yuina returned. Those Pokemon were here now, whether people liked it or not, and it wasn't their fault that they were. They were always going to be regarded as monsters, dangers, unless they could be understood, they were no different than something like Higumei.

Though Eddie couldn't help but flash one last venomous glare at the rude onlookers, there was something about the way Yuina held the massive head of her beloved bear that dampened some of the fury that had welled up in him. [break][break]

He sighed heavily as he considered the Elite Ranger and Ursaluna for a moment. Love was anathema to hate, as understanding was to fear. It was frustrating that people had chosen to judge so quickly and harshly, but of course that was only natural. That just made Yuina's work all the more important; if people could learn more about displaced creatures such as Higumei, perhaps even the terrible beings they faced in the Chasm could find their place in this world, and humankind could make space to live alongside them in some semblance of harmony. A pipe-dream, perhaps, but Eddie had always considered himself something of a dreamer, too, [break][break]

“I'm glad Higumei's got you in his corner,” Eddie replied, a fond smile creeping back in spite of himself, “You're fightin' the good fight, even if these bozos don't realize it.” [break][break]

He turned back to any that still lingered, raising his voice to carry his words across the park, [break][break]

“Listen up, folks. Ya'll ain't got a damn thing ta worry about, because my friend Yuina here is an expert on Hisuian Pokemon and an Elite Ranger ta boot! Now if any of you clowns wanna pull yer heads outta yer asses and learn somethin' new today, then shut yer mouths and open yer ears!” [break][break]

Maybe it was wrong to put Yuina on the spot like that, but damn it, surely there was at least one person out here who'd care enough to hear them out. And in Eddie's experience, sometimes it just took a single voice to reach out with compassion and empathy to awake that kindred spirit of humanity in the rest of their peers.[break][break]

Holding herself firm in front of Higumei, her hands smoothed over the fur of his maw, thumbs stroking him in gentle patterns, Yuina did earn the bear's calm in spite of the sharp whispers and burning glances that surrounded them. Positive reinforcement, she was working very hard on his positive reinforcement, if she just returned him to his Pokeball every time they were faced with the discomfort of judgement, he wouldn't learn to take the onslaught of negative emotions in stride.[break][break]
Higumei huffed again, laying out on the ground, relinquishing his great weight from his paws as Yuina looked up to Eddie at his kind words. At least someone saw the value in what she was trying to do... And for that she would be forever greatful.[break][break]
Before she could say anything more, Eddie's compassion took hold again as he called out to their disgruntled onlookers. Yuina stiffened, eyes wide behind her glasses. Where she was trying to do her work in educating about these long forgotten species, it was usually in the sanctity of her museum, where visitors had come willingly... For the most part at least.[break]
She feared the worst, would they get backlash? Would they have to leave to keep Higumei safe? She didn't dare look out to those that were caught by Eddie's words... Until she heard a question.[break][break]
"...What is an Ursa... What did you call it? I've only seen Ursaring before," a voice asked, approaching the pair, and Yuina turned from Higumei's head to find someone stepped forward, even if cautiously.[break][break]
Yuina's eyes sparkled, and she heard Moroe yip behind her, the fox holding one of her books in her teeth as her 'assistant'. Yuina couldn't contain herself, she lunged for Eddie and wrapped her arms around him, so much thanks and gratitude in the expression that she couldn't otherwise find the words for.[break][break]
"Thank you..." she murmered, before stepping back, taking up the book that Moroe offered to her. Now that one person had stepped forward, there were a couple of others lingering still, looking, watching, waiting...[break]
"He is a species called Ursaluna, and he actually does belong to the Ursaring family. Centuries ago, before the Sinnoh Region was colonized...," she began, another passionate impromptu history lesson.

A warm hug and a word of thanks was all it took for Eddie's heart to swell with sincere pride. He listened happily as Yuina began her lesson in earnest, even as he still eyed the crowd with some leeriness. [break][break]

It was funny, in a way; in much the same way that meeting his Growlithe was an improbable chance encounter, so too was it similarly fortuitous that his path had crossed with Yuina. Not that she had been similarly displaced across space and time, but Eddie couldn't have imagined he would have gained such a wonderful new friend from what was an otherwise harrowing experience in the Chasm. Perhaps such things were fated, even in the chaos that so often swept across Hoenn. Or maybe not; maybe fortune was being kind to Eddie for once. [break][break]

But either way, as the crowd grew and people began to chime in with their own observations and thoughtful questions, all Eddie could hope for was a chance to sit in on the next history lesson. And maybe next time, he'd bring his own little slice of Hisui with him. Yuina may be one of the leading experts on the history of the ancient land, but Eddie was sure that his own contributions regarding Blanche's favored snacks and her love of belly rubs would be a worthwhile addition to the Elite Ranger's already exhaustive pool of knowledge.[break][break]
