Aubre steps back as the powder takes effect. It’d take the Noivern a moment to reach true unconsciousness. Turning her full attention to Lulu, the doctor flushes. It's a mixture of pride and discomfort. A drawer opens and closes as a suture kit joins the iridescent thread. The bitten-nail fingers are steady as she unzips the pouch.

“I wouldn’t go that far.” To her, there wasn’t anything special about what she did. Plenty of other people did it better. That’s what was important. She certainly wasn’t magic. “It took a lot of training to get here.” Looking back, Aubre still wonders how she survived. School had been cutthroat and wits just as sharp as the scalpels in the next drawer. And you can't even look at a Charmander without getting palpitations. Don't get too full of yourself.

A monitor is hooked up to track the Noivern’s heart rate.

A quick glance at her smartwatch shows the allotted time has passed. “Maggie?” The Jumpluff nods as she drifts away from the dragon. Its breathing is steady, and there’s no outward sign of distress. Vitals look good.

“All right.” Green eyes examine the wings briefly. Teeth worry at her bottom lip as she tries to pick the best place to start—a tall order when the membrane looks moth-eaten. “Let’s get started.”

Starting with the largest tear, the doctor works on pulling the torn flesh back together. For a being with such self-hatred, there’s surprising assurance to each movement. “I’m not going to stitch them all closed.” It was putting the Pokemon through more stress than was necessary. It was also opening the door to infection when it wasn’t necessary. “Just focusing on the larger ones for now.”

The rest would heal on their own.

“If you get squeamish, you can take a step outside.” She didn’t assume the blonde would. Some people actually liked watching this stuff.

Tiny hands shift the wing slightly for a better view. The silver visible between the sides is shrinking by the second. “How’d you meet her?”

the noivern drifted off, under the spell of the jumpluff’s sleep powder.[break][break]

such modesty was tiresome when she’d paid for the best. about the abundance of training it had taken the doctor to get to her position, lulu replied, “of course. i should hope so.”[break][break]

she observed as aubre settled beside her dragon and began the job. “whatever you think is best, doctor.” and then, ”i’m not squeamish.”[break][break]

unflinching as the sutures pulled together, aubre’s question took her back to the day of the noivern’s capture. a magical moment, to see all its kin flocked together, and to have the most beautiful of them all.[break][break]

”she was in a swarm, in rusturf tunnel. i offered her a fig and she came to me.”[break][break]

At least there would be no unconscious humans to deal with today. Certainly, she had no issues dealing with Pokemon fluids. But something about human vomit and stress hit differently.

“There shouldn’t be too much blood anyway.” The bat’s wings were full of capillaries, but there wasn’t any major vessels to worry about. With work occupying her mind, any remnants of nervousness vanished. Green eyes fixed on the task at hand. Another tear vanished as she pulled a row of stitches together. In the bright lights, the opalescent thread glittered brilliantly--like spider gossamer.

“And then there were four.” That meant she was a third—and infinitesimal decimal thirds—done. Aubre stepped back for a moment to survey the work. Satisfied with what she’d done, the doctor walked to the top of the table. There, she moved to a smaller tear. It was in an inconvenient place, however. Just off the middle seam line. This position allowed her to face Lulu head on.

Figy berries, huh? That bit of information might come in handy later.

“You must have been honored.” Her gaze briefly flitted to her own shiny. The Jumpluff just grinned at her trainer. “Most of my Pokemon are rescues.” There were only a handful of exceptions—Alastor was one of them. “A few of them couldn’t survive on their own, but most of them just chose to stay.” Leon Settentrioné said it was because she spoiled them. But she didn’t think that.

Aubre just treated them like people.

“I think they like the perks.” At least no one in her house tried to eat anyone.

she observed as the sedated noivern was sewed up, its wings like old mothim-eaten curtens coming back together under skilled handiwork. cold as she was, it was nice to know that her bat would be back to its normal self eventually.[break][break]

taken by an unexpected wave of sentimentality, she opened more to the conversation.[break][break]

”i think the case is probably the same for my bats. food, shelter. the easy life.” though, deep down, she found a childish hope in her heart that it was something more: that they appreciated her companionship and nurturing, and that they remained there for her. ”they all sleep in a roost i built for them. they're free to leave, but they always come back.”

“Bats?” There’s a slight pause as she pulls another strand together. Green eyes briefly meet those of the disguised scientist. The window between them quickly vanished. “As in more than one?” Obviously. Moron. For a moment, an emerald gaze lingers on the injuries. Hopefully, they’re in better shape than this one. Her own team was a motley crew. She loved all Pokemon equally. But she’d always had a soft spot for birds.

The other woman’s words make her chuckle. “I can understand the temptation.” But to her, that sort of life would be boring. In fact, it’d been that exact fate Leon had offered on their marriage. His family was wealthy, and there was no need for her to work. She could have stayed home and focused wholly on raising her daughter. That never felt like enough. While her work could make a world of difference to one little girl, the redhead wanted to do more.

That was why—of all the places in this Arceus forsaken world—some part of her was glad they ended up here. “Well, I would take that as a compliment.” Or, at the very least, a normal person would. Aubre was known to read too much into everything under the sun.

“You’ll want to keep her out of the aerie while she heals.” Just one more monster tear to go. “There’s a lot that can happen in a roost.”

the noivern lied motionless, sewn back together bit by bit like an old, tattered doll. she would never be quite the same, but at least her strength would return.[break][break]

while lulu wanted to brush the doctor’s words off as ridiculous, she couldn’t help but find warmth in the idea that her bats stuck around for her company as much as they did for food or shelter. it caused a twitch at the corner of her mouth, almost a smile.[break][break]

about the roost, she nodded, ”tell me about it. it’s a house of mayhem – but they are how they are.” after a pause she asked, ”how can i make her comfortable while she’s healing?”[break][break]

The redhead was glad for the Noivern’s stillness. Some patients twitched on the table. Others woke up in the middle of treatment. Fortunately, there seemed to be no issue there. Her Jumpluff continued to bob around the top of the table. Little crimson eyes were glued on the Noivern’s face.

“They thrive in that environment.” Her on the other hand? She preferred quiet and order. “I prefer things a little less crowded.” Which was much less possible with her mother, father, and brother-in-law temporarily shacking up with them.

At the question, Aubre took a moment to examine her handiwork. Everything looked good. The rest of the tears would be better left to heal on their own. Lulu’s obvious concern made her soften about those earlier impressions. Accidents happened in battle. And not all Pokemon were forced into that life. Maggie herself was proof of that. “I would make sure she has something soft to lay on to start.”

Why not state the obvious? What monster would put her on a cold floor? There’s a deep breath as the doctor ponders a moment more. “I would also invest in a decently sized heating pad. It will help with the bone aches.” Above all else, she needed to remain relatively calm.

“I know this sounds weird but a TV can help. Give her something to take her mind off the injury.” Al’s texts (and tendency to spoil) told her he could follow most plots well enough. Again, her eyes swept over the bat’s prone form. She was double (quadruple, really) checking that she’d closed what she needed to. “Anything high protein can speed up recovery too.”

Now, it was time to support the fracture. Which wasn’t going to be easy for a bat of this size. Aubre turned back to the printout of the x-rays in front of her. She murmured a few things as she left a few lines across the paper. It didn’t look too damaged. With that done, she got to work stiffening the weak wing with a mixture of bandages and a padded tube (that looked like an extra long straw).
