It didn't matter how long they'd been in the region, the sights always took Reinier's breath away. Mt. Pyre looming nearby, the sea running alongside them with crisp ocean air- it was enough cause to slow down and just take it in. For as long as they could remember, it had always been them and Nocturne.[break][break]

Always them and Nocturne. They looked down at the Absol with a deep fondness, something they rarely showed to anyone but the pokemon.[break][break]

Unlike most other trainers, Reinier didn't see it necessary to have more than one reliable partner. Being a duo made their job easier. That's not to say they didn't see merit in having more - if you were taking on the gym challenge for example. But their line of work called for a smaller team.[break][break]

Reinier pet the head of their partner as they looked around once more taking in the sights and smells again, Nocturne sniffing the air.

As Shalin sat astride her Type: Null, her attention was consumed by the Mount Pyre rift's presence. She had set foot inside several times, collecting atmospheric and dimensional data for illeana reyes . As dangerous as the snow cat prowling the barrens was, her rodeo with the Chien-Pao was unforgettable. She had become much stronger since then, and wanted a second round with the creature. Having kept up with the news about jayden cross , she knew that there was no way such a creature would join up with an innocent soul like her.

She and the strange Pokémon would be in plain sight of Reinier Justice beneath the cloudy sky. Perhaps the strange Pokémon the Captain was seated on would catch their attention?

While not immediately catching the information dealer's attention, it had certainly caught the Absol's. Notcurne picked up on their approaching scent and watched with a keen but almost curious gaze. As much as his trainer's attention was on the different sights, Nocturne's was on the different pokemon.[break][break]

It wasn't until the strange ride and trainer grew closer that Nocturne grabbed Reinier's attention by nudging the side of their leg.[break][break]

Reinier turned to greet the approaching individual, offering a nod in way of hello, their eyes scanning the pokemon that the other was sat astride. "Interesting choice of transport." They commented, a brow raised, mostly out of curiosity than anything.

Shalin grinned at the traveler's compliment, her eyes shifting toward their Absol. It made her think about Dusk, her own Absol that was still at her home base on Petalburg Plateau. "Thanks!" she chirped back. "I wasn't once called Hoenn's wildest Pokémon rider for nothing!"

Shalin reined Lathiel around so that the so-called Ultra Beast killer would face Caelan. "Captain Shalin Nariya of Rustboro," she introduced herself to the traveler. "What brings you out to a place so remote?" she asked, curious and perhaps a bit too inquisitive. Lathiel made eye contact with the Absol but did not greet them.

"Fitting title." Reinier agreed, eyes moving from the strange pokemon to the trainer. Nocturne at Reinier's side, stared back at the other pokemon, not greeting it. Outside of it's initial curiosity, the Absol wasn't sure what other reaction to even have. "Reinier. And I guess you could say I'm just a curious soul, a traveler looking to learn more about the region they've found themselves living in." They replied.[break][break]

Their demeanour, while not hostile, was certainly a stark contrast next to their impromptu companion. Though Reimier was often a stark contrast to many in general. Often seeming gloomy or detached, even among others of a similar nature.[break][break]

And as though in response to the silent comparison, a Meditite had found it's way into the conversation. Nocturne had made ready to engage, but Reinier gently nudged the Absol and gave a small shake of their head. "Let it be." They told their partner, who backed down.

Shalin's eyes lit up at Reinier's curious demeanor. "A fellow explorer like myself, are you?" she asked, Lathiel shaking her head. The emotionless Absol reminded her of her Gym Leader friend's, who never showed a shred of emotion. Little did she know the dark-type had a complete personality shift since his ascension to Champion -- and his rebirth as the Knight of Thunder. "There's a lot to learn about Hoenn. You've certainly picked the right--"

Before she could continue, a fish Pokémon she hadn't seen before, and a quick one at that, splashed water all over the Captain and her steed, causing the Type: Null to try to shake the water off. "Hey! Can you let me down before you do that?" she quipped, barely able to keep her balance. Sliding off her Pokémon, she jogged toward the lake the Veluza was leaping out of. If she wanted to catch it, she was going to need to chase it down. And what better Pokémon to give chase than Shabraz? The Sharpedo, when released from her Poké Ball and mounted by her trainer, bucked and flailed with expectations of the act making Shalin happy. "Not now! We gotta chase after that Pokémon!"

The two swift fish may have been tough for Reinier to follow, Shalin a bit scared to fire her mount's AQUA JET. They were already zooming across the waves without it, but they wouldn't make any headway otherwise. With a gulp down her throat, she clutched the Sharpedo's steering fin tightly and gave the order. Opening her jaw as wide as she could, the sea predator shot toward the wild like a cannonball, getting a loud yelp out of her rider.

By the time the Veluza could react, the only attack it could get off fast enough was a PSYCHO CUT. Leaning low on the shark's body, Shalin used Shabraz as a shield to help avoid the powerful attack. Even the Sharpedo was not completely immune from the SHARPNESS of the psychic-type attack, both of them lurching back from their shallow cuts. The Captain, not seeing another chance before she grew too weak on the lake, hurled a Net Ball toward the wild. If it got away, that was okay. If this species could keep up with a Sharpedo effortlessly, she would have some serious training to do before she could effectively saddle up the psychic fish.

Their conversation cut short, it hadn't taken long for the curious stranger to become distracted with a pokemon of her own. Though unlike Reinier wbo had been disinterested, Shalin had taken off on a pokemon after it. Reinier approached the edge of the water to watch. Nocturne had become curious as well, trotting over to Reinier's side.[break][break]

It was hard to keep track of what was happening in the water but it appeared to be going well.[break][break]

However their attention had been pulled from the water battle by Nocturne suddenly turning around and growling. At first Reinier couldn't see what the pokemon had alerted them to but then they saw the glowing red eye of a ghost. They moved away from the water's edge and put some distance between them and the pokemon. Nocturne placed himself between his trainer and the other, staring it down.[break][break]

Reinier wasn't entirely sure what they were facing, and simply waited to see if the other would make a move. The Dusknoir's attention seemed to focus solely on the Absol, putting both trainer and pokemon ill at ease. The two engaged pokemon stared each other down before the Dusknoir made the first move with a SHADOW PUNCH. Nocturne was able to DETECT the incoming move and leap out of the way. Reinier had barely given the command for a NIGHT SLASH counter when Nocturne used the momentum from the leap with the move, himself.[break][break]

While a worthy opponent, and one they'd likely lose to with a continued battle, the moment the ghost pokemon was staggered and Nocturne was out of the way, Reinier wasted no time in throwing an ordinary pokeball. It wasn't the best choice, but the one they had available on them currently. All they could do was wait and hope for the best. Nocturne remained alert, eyes laser focused on the red ball, and Reinier remained silent. They had to remain ready if the catch failed.

Shalin retrieved her catch before coasting back to shore on Shabraz. "Sorry for leaving you alone like that; couldn't let the Veluza get away!" she apologized, perhaps a bit too excited for her new catch. She felt breaking the creature to the bridle wouldn't be easy. It wasn't easy with the Sharpedo, but she had managed. Once she had slid off the shark and into the shallows, she withdrew her and let her clothes dry off some.

"As I was saying, you've picked the right region if you're an explorer," Shalin continued. "There are all kinds of ruins, temples, cave systems, and other amazing places people haven't set foot in for centuries." She wished she could have showed her AVIAN BOW to Reinier as evidence of what awaited, but she had left it back at Petalburg Woods. Besides, she was out of arrows again, needing to get in touch with Alexei Ivanov to have Tornadus restock her...

Neither trainer nor pokemon moved until the ball stopped. Reinier relaxed their shoulders, walking over to retrieve the caught Dusknoir. Nocturne trotted by their side, and once the new mon was secured, they turned to their partner. "Well done, good job." They smiled softly, hand falling to pet the Absol's head, just as Shalin returned to them.[break][break]

"Ah, no worries. I caught a new partner of my own." Reinier nodded, approaching the other, meeting her halfway to be within conversation range. "Explorer is a word. I come from Sinnoh, which is quite lore rich, and I figured Hoenn might be the same. Any recommendations on where to start?" Reinier asked.[break][break]

Nocturne sniffed the air curiously, letting out a growl to alert the two trainers. There were more mon nearby. Perhaps the middle of remote path was not the best place to converse. "Let's pin this conversation." Reinier said, looking to where their Nocturne's gaze met with that of a Golett.[break][break]

This time, instead of waiting for the other to act, Nocturne took the initiative with a NIGHT SLASH, the Golett having little time to react, used ROLLOUT to move itself out of the way, only to use the move again and aim for the Absol. Nocturne braced, head down, using it's head scythe to take the brunt of the force, being knocked back. Assessing the two fighting Pokemon, Reinier called for Nocturne to move out of the way of the third use of the move and to get a SUCKER PUNCH prepped for a counter move. Breaking the Golett's barrage and giving Reinier a chance to throw a pokeball at the pokemon.[break][break]

Once again, both pokemon and trainer kept their eyes on the red ball.

It was hard to recommend a place to start. There were so many fascinating tales of Hoennian history hidden throughout its ruins, strongholds, and other geographic features. She, too, was overwhelmed by how vast Hoenn was. As she dredged up memories of her expeditions, she came up with a good starting one.

"What about the Braviary's Nest northwest of Fortree?" Shalin suggested. "It's a stronghold where the first-known bird Pokémon trainers lived. You need a flying Pokémon to get there, but it's worth seeing. We could go there together sometime if you don't have a flying Pokémon of your own!"

Shalin wasn't quite sure why Reinier wanted to cut the conversation short; 121 was a very rural route. It was unlikely anyone would be eavesdropping on them in the middle of nowhere. She paid the Gallade nearby no heed as she and her Type: Null watched Reinier's battle with Golett.

After the battle with the Dusknoir, Nocturne felt confident in being able to handle the Golett come whatever result of the catch. So the absol turned to look at his trainer seeming to tell them it's alright. With a small deep breath, Reinier supposed Nocturne could handle it and turned their attention back to Shalin.[break][break]

"My apologies, Shalin. But as capable as Nocturne is, if we are to be engaged in battle, I prefer my full attention on the battle and not divided, in case I see something he doesn't." Reinier explained. "but Nocturne seems confident in this one. So we may continue."[break][break]

"Braviary's Nest... sounds interesting. I wouldn't mind joining you on a journey there, mostly as I do not own a flying type." They said. Though there was merit to company and a guide, even they had a flying pokemon of their own. It would save the search of finding someone to fill that role in the long run. And Shalin seemed someone worth aquainting themselves with in general. Perhaps as a guide to other parts of Hoenn's history as well.
