More and more, the excuse of "I'm an accountant" seemed to mean nothing. Rumors spread among Frank's fellow grunts that war with the League was on the horizon, though he hadn't confirmed it with his superiors. [break][break]

That is, until none other than Underboss Cillian Quinn summoned Frank to accompany him on a special mission. [break][break]

"So there's going to be war after all," the silver-haired man murmured as they approached a warehouse in the dead of night. Inside, the League stored medical supplies intended for distribution in emergencies. [break][break]

Their goal was simple: procure as much as they could for Team Rocket instead. [break][break]

"Why pick me to come with you, though?" Frank asked Cillian. Dressed in black clothes and a mask, he felt like a caricature of a burglar rather than his true profession. Beside him, his Alolan Persian seemed the better thief.

A simple response to the question, accompanied by a shrug.[break][break]

But in truth, there was another answer. A smirk tugs at the corner of Cillian's mouth as he admits, "Figured you might appreciate a little excitement. Accounting can be terribly dully, no?"[break][break]

Cillian liked paperwork, despite his frequent griping. He enjoyed math, numbers, things others found droll. But nothing could defeat the rush of adrenaline earned from putting one's life on the line, or from breaking the rules.[break][break]

They were both adrenaline junkies. He knew Frank understood.[break][break]

On the subject of war, he says, "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Either they're thinking the same, or the worst is yet to come."[break][break]

A tiny Zubat that had hidden herself in the folds of his hood takes flight at the click of his tongue. The INFILTRATOR easily finds a way inside without tripping any sort of alarm, ready to use her CONFUSE RAY should the guards on duty get suspicious.

"It can be," Frank admitted with a shrug. In truth, he enjoyed toying with numbers, finding it a healthy mental challenge. But Cillian did not strike him as a man who could understand that kind of thrill. "It's nothing quite like sneaking around and flirting with getting caught, though." [break][break]

Frank knew that sort of thrill intimately. [break][break]

He waited with Cillian outside the warehouse as the small Zubat slipped inside. Unsure what exactly they were waiting for, he glanced down at his Persian. [break][break]

"Keep an eye out for trouble, Rex," he whispered. Silently, the cat turned his gaze to the street.

"No," Cillian agrees. "Numbers are interesting, this is exhilarating."[break][break]

He had always enjoyed the rush of adrenaline that came with a high stakes mission, but avatarship has further intensified that craving. Simple thrills were not as fulfilling as they'd once been.[break][break]

Satisfied when his Zubat does not return, Cillian gestures silently for Frank to follow. He'd had agents scope out the building the previous week to identify potential entry and exit points, and they'd identified a blind spot from the cameras.[break][break]

"See that window up there?" He gestures to a high window, well out of reach from the ground. "It overlooks a catwalk that the cameras can't see. Bit risky, since the high ground makes us easier to spot, but Galia should be able to interfere if we're spotted."[break][break]

He releases his Dhelmise, who hooks its ANCHOR SHOT to the window's lip. It could easily haul both men up, should Frank not have a plan of his own.

Frank, unfamiliar with the basic crime of breaking and entering, accepted the Dhelmise's assistance. Clinging to the Pokémon, he savored the rush of air and sudden adrenaline spike as they ascended to the window. From there, he and his Persian hopped onto the catwalk. [break][break]

The warehouse spread out below them. Frank had never been in one before, and never from such a high vantage point. It was exactly like the movies, and, at the same time, nothing like one. [break][break]

His heart pounding in his ears, he observed the layout of the area. Neat rows of crates filled the center of the large chamber, while shelves of smaller items lined the walls. [break][break]

A pair of guards sat by the front door playing cards, while another pair wandered between the merchandise, flashlights in hand. [break][break]

"Which ones are we grabbing?" Frank whispered to Cillian, gesturing to the crates.

It felt good to be pulling jobs again. Fieldwork, he called it. The seat of underboss left him with little time to indulge the criminal skills that had seen him rise this far, but it wasn't unlike riding a bike. Just had to shake off a bit of rust.[break][break]

He casts a sly grin toward Frank Caffey when they make it onto the catwalk, his gleaming golden gaze speaking volumes.[break][break]

Frank Caffey's hushed question makes him think of Marcel, how they'd been able to communicate not with words but with sign language. He missed those days of Kanto, but doesn't begrudge Caffey the lack of knowledge.[break][break]

"Whatever's easiest," is the obvious answer, but he adds a clarification of, "Revives will cripple them hardest. Anything like that. You got the Voltorbs ready?"[break][break]

They were meant as a diversion, should they require one.

Frank nodded solemnly, taking in Cillian's directive and patting the Pokéballs on his belt in reassurance. Then, as stealthily as possible, he crept along the catwalk toward a section of crates farthest from the patrolling guards. Rex dropped down first on silent paws. [break][break]

They made quick work, opening crates and snatching the most valuable items. Revives, Max Potions, and even the rare Ether. Frank stuffed them in a duffel bag while his Persian kept watch, tail swishing to alert them of guard movement. [break][break]

Eventually, Frank had filled his bag almost to the brim. It was much heavier than he'd anticipated, though, and when he went to climb back up to the catwalk behind Cillian, it banged against the metal. A shout rose up from elsewhere in the warehouse, following by approaching footsteps. [break][break]

Frank froze even as adrenaline flooded his veins and his heart started racing. Glancing up, he tried to find Cillian's eyes and ask him through expression alone what the fuck they should do.

It starts smoothly enough. Laughter echoes through the warehouse in response to some joke, the murmur of voices providing a perfect telegraph of which lanes he ought to avoid while sneaking through the stacked crates and stocked shelves.[break][break]

Cillian's heart pounds hard against his chest as he stuffs things into the bag over his shoulder. There's a slight smile on his lips, a clear love of the anxiety and tension that would put many others off this sort of high-risk job. It was well above the pay-grade of an underboss, but Cillian had volunteered himself for the love of the rush.[break][break]

Having done this sort of thing plenty of times as a grunt, he makes his way nigh-silently back up to the catwalk. But as he's creeping toward the open window, he hears the dull clang of something against metal and turns to see Frank with a Deerling-in-headlights expression. Shouts replace the easy laughter from before, and a flashlight pans upward like a spotlight toward the two men.[break][break]

Shit.[break][break]

Cillian jerks his head down and to the right, attempting to indicate the pokeballs. A diversion. But how Frank interpreted that was another man.[break][break]

"Freeze!" someone shouts, as Cillian reaches for one of his own pokeballs. He hesitates for fear they were armed, and whistles instead. An inaudible screech echoes through the space as Galia's CONFUSE RAY rattles them enough for Cillian to pull the pokeball free and toss it. His Delphox emerges with a snarl and a swish of her wand, DARK ROOM plunging the area before the catwalk into inky darkness. They couldn't aim at what they couldn't see, after all.

Frank took a moment to process what the jerk of Cillian's head meant, his brain scrambling for the right course of action. In that hesitation, the underboss's Zubat swooped out of the shadows. A flash of light later, and a Delphox appeared to plunge part of the warehouse in darkness. [break][break]

The sudden burst of action jolted Frank out of his stupor. Hauling himself onto the catwalk, he grabbed at the Pokéballs on his belt and flung them into the open air. They released their occupants, dropping several Voltorb into the inky blackness. [break][break]

Seconds later, EXPLOSIONS rocked the building. [break][break]

"Go, go!" Frank hissed, urging his Alolan Persian to run ahead. The large cat raced to the window and peered out, checking for more guards. Seeing none, he leaped from the building, with Frank following close behind.

An alarm begins to blare. The shouting gets louder. Footsteps echo below.[break][break]

None of it is so loud as the EXPLOSIONS that rock the catwalk beneath Cillian's feet before he hauls himself through the window and drops to the ground. He lands harder than intended with his haste to escape, but the pain is barely felt beyond the buzz of adrenaline.[break][break]

Metal and wood creak, groan, and crash as part of the warehouse comes down. There might well be casualties; Cillian's not thinking about that. All that's on his mind is the escape.[break][break]

Hefting the duffel bag on his shoulder, he whistles to his Dhelmise so that it might summon its PHANTOM FORCE... but the portal of umbral ink is impenetrable.[break][break]

"Shit, they've set up an ARENA TRAP or something. On foot."[break][break]

They'd be too easy to track through the skies, but the urban jungle of Rustboro was the perfect cover. He takes the lead with practiced ease, called back to the days of being a grunt in Saffron dodging officers in alleys and through train tunnels.[break][break]

In the humid night air, heart pounding hard as his feet against the concrete and hands shaking from the thrill, Cillian turns to Frank Caffey and grins.

"What a job, huh?"

Frank took off after Cillian, hoping the underboss knew his way through Rustboro's streets and alleys. He dared not look back over his shoulder at the collapsing building as they fled. [break][break]

"That was crazy!" he gasped, unable to keep the laughter from bubbling out despite the panic and terror. One wrong move, and he would have gotten arrested again for sure. But Cillian had made sure that hadn't happened, with his quick thinking and strong Pokémon. [break][break]

When they'd run far enough and it was clear no one was chasing after them, the pair slowed down to catch their breath. Frank slumped against a wall, panting, sweat beading his skin. As the adrenaline and white-hot fear faded, a new emotion reared its head behind the exultant triumph. [break][break]

"Sorry I fucked up with the bag," he said to Cillian, looking sheepish. "I don't have a lot of practice with this hands-on stuff." [break][break]

Driving a smuggling van was nothing compared to burglary.

Frank Caffey's laughter is matched by Cillian's own, loud and wild.[break][break]

He, too, slumps against the wall when they find some relief from the chase. His lungs are burning and he's wracked with violent coughs, doubled over and spitting phlegm. Not for the first time, he thinks, I really need to quit smoking.[break][break]

Yet it's also in that moment he wants a cigarette most. Only his aching chest holds him back.[break][break]

He blinks to clear eyes that water from the force of the cough, flapping a dismissive hand in Frank's vague direction.[break][break]

"Shit happens. Not like my escape plan went to. Plan." He snickers. "Usually they don't think that quick, but I guess they weren't as wise to us when I was a grunt."[break][break]

Before the war, before Kanto's fall, people had been allowed to live in blissful ignorance.[break][break]

"Nothin' a little practice cant fix." He takes great gulps of air, starting to recover from the coughing fit. His lungs still feel like they're on fire. "You handled yourself pretty damn well. Just in our blood, people like us."
