The open ocean was a merciful distraction, one Caleb had been in desperate need of lately. The Rangers had been running him into the ground, and though dealing with the continued aftermath of the Mt. Chimney and Kyurem incidents was necessary work, he was utterly and thoroughly exhausted.[break][break]
Lyra glided through the waves with unmatched expertise, and Caleb sighed softly in contentment as the sea breeze blew back his hair and caressed his cheeks. He breathed in deep, savoring the temporary escape from the grind. Out here, the most he had to worry about was avoiding sunburn.[break][break]
Shutting his eyes, he began to drift off...[break][break]
Lyra trilled a warning and Caleb's eyes snapped back open. Well, he'd never had much luck - why would it start now?[break][break]
Sitting up, he shifted to look in the direction the Lapras was gazing, noticing several massive shapes struggling against the tide, bodies washed up on the nearby Dewford Beach. "Wailord?" He guessed.[break][break]
He thought about ignoring them but...[break][break]
"Take us over," he sighed, resigned. A past version of Caleb might not have cared, but he was a different man now...no matter how tired. "They look like they need some help."

she was in town on business. earlier that day, she’d had a serendipitous encounter with rika, a coordinator for a local mining company as she’d taken her lunch at a small café. rika had nearly had her purse stolen when nina had stepped in to save the day, planting a seed of friendship carried on a knowing wind.[break][break]

work was short in the beginning. all that took was a little watering and attention. a coffee the next day, when they’d run into each other again by chance. for the time in between, she was free to shed clothes for swimwear in the approaching summer heat, and roam less familiar shores.[break][break]

at the sight of beached wailord, she urged her water dragon closer, sliding off into the merciful coolness of the waves when close enough to stand.[break][break]

on the shore, her gyarados soaked the burning sand beneath her feet as she assessed the situation, before she noticed the approaching lapras and its trainer behind a curve of blubber.[break][break]

”hey! are you coming to help?” she called to Caleb Harcourt with a wave.[break][break]

if he wasn’t, he was about to get roped into it.

A woman called out to him as he approached the shore, her sky-blue hair blowing in the sea breeze, making her look like a beautiful siren set to lure him to his doom. She had a determined look about her, like she wouldn't take no for an answer.[break][break]
"I'm a Ranger," he called back, returning her wave. "I'm here to help, yeah."[break][break]
He surveyed the Wailord, trying to decide the best way to go about remedying their beached state. Feeling indecisive, he hopped off Lyra's back, and splashed his way through the surf until he was standing at the woman's side. His boots left deep prints in the wet sand in the wake of his passing.[break][break]
"Caleb Harcourt," he introduced himself, flashing her his best charming smile. She was cute, after all. "If I have my Lapras Mega-evolve, she'll be big enough to push some of these Wailord back into the ocean. Does your Gyarados know any Flying moves? A powerful gust of wind might help, too."

”oh, good!”[break][break]

she briefly eyed the ranger up and down as he made his way over. cute – but then came the introduction.[break][break]

harcourt. the devourer’s brother. interesting.[break][break]

”hi,” she smiled. there was a look of familiarity to it, as though they’d met before, and it was funny that he’d introduce himself again. the gaze lingered, before she turned away towards the wailord without offering a name back. maybe she’d forgotten, staring into his eyes the way she had been.[break][break]

”i think we can manage that,” she called over her shoulder, as a hand slid over the giant blue scales of her companion. ”mega evolve, gyarados.”[break][break]

the keystone on her anklet glowed, casting a rainbow of colors across the sand along with the shifting silhouette beside her. the gyarados roared as it settled into its mega form, sinking more like the beached wailords that lined the shore.[break][break]

”whenever you’re ready!” she grinned back at caleb.[break][break]

His cheeks reddened slightly as she gave him a rather intense once-over. There was an amused, sultry spark to the way she regarded him, and it made him wonder, for a brief half-second, if they knew each other. He tried to come up with her name, and failed, feeling oddly captivated as they gazed into each other's eyes, the world around them a blur of cloudy greys and breezy blues. His heart hammered, nearly overcome by an overwhelming and unhinged romantic urge to kiss her.[break][break]
The spell broke and she turned away, and Caleb gulped in air like he'd been suffocating. He tapped the Mega Accessory around his wrist, triggering Lyra's transformation just as the woman's Gyarados began to grow in size. The two water types rippled and surged, soon becoming behemoths that towered over the collection of Wailord, water breaking against their massive hides like waves making contact with a rocky shore.[break][break]
"Allright, Lyra, go ahead," he encouraged the Mega-Lapras. She opened her maw, summoning an ICE BEAM.[break][break]
Beneath the Wailord, the sea began to freeze. Caleb nodded approvingly - now it would be even easier to slide the beached whales back into the ocean.

mega lapras was beautiful, with the ice crystals that levitated around its body, sparkling in the summer sun. nina felt a cool breeze on her face as its ice beam froze the water against the shore, a momentary respite from the heat.[break][break]

”your turn, gyarados,” she called, and the sea monster roared toothily and summoned a twister across the ice that pulled the wailord sharply back out to sea on their frozen ramp. she saw them splash gratefully in the distance before disappearing into the depths.[break][break]

the work was done within hardly a couple of minutes – far less time than she had predicted she’d be there, figuring it out.[break][break]

”well, that was easy.” she smiled again at caleb, patting the scales of her gyarados and standing clear of the slippery ice that began to perspire under the sun. ”we make a good team!”[break][break]

The Mega Gyarados made quick work of pushing the Wailord out to sea, the swiftness of their passage amplified by the ice Lyra had conjured. When the woman turned to Caleb and brightly declared their synergy, he couldn't help but grin back at her in agreement.[break][break]
"We do," he preened. Then something occurred to him, brow furrowing slightly. "Hey, I don't think I - "[break][break]
At that moment, the massive sheet of ice groaned, cracking beneath the heat of the summer sun. Chunks broke off and began floating away, as if they intended to follow after the Wailord. As if sensing the awkward timing of the disruption, Lyra leaned down and nudged Caleb with her nose, an encouraging gesture from a beloved companion.[break][break]
" - caught your name," he finished, somewhat sheepishly.

his smile was radiant, and nina found herself staring another moment. perhaps it was the striking contrast between him and what she’d heard Zev Harcourt was like, whom she imagined didn’t smile much at all.[break][break]

even before the ice interrupted with its groaning goodbye, it was easy enough to guess what his question would be. it gave her a moment to consider a lie.[break][break]

”nina.”[break][break]

she realized then she was disappointed that the job was done. her gaze left him to cast out at the waves, and then back.[break][break]

”are you heading out to watch the coast again?” she paused, before tilting her head the other way, taming hair behind her ear. ”or are you going to get a drink with me?”[break][break][break]

It suited her. A pretty name for a pretty woman, with eyes like rubies.[break][break]
Later, he'd wonder if he'd imagined a subtle flash of recognition as she'd regarded him - her expression slightly inquisitive, as if trying to make sense of something. Later, his instincts would poke and prod at his heart, reminding him not to trust too openly. Too easily.[break][break]
But now was not later, and she seemed reluctant to leave. No wait - that wasn't quite right. She seemed eager to stay.[break][break]
The sheepish smile transformed instantly into a rather suave grin, and he held out his hand to her, hair mussed by the salty breeze.[break][break]
"I'm going to take you out to sea," he told her, the promise of adventure intertwining with the sultry undertones of flirtation. "My patrol happens to end by a beach bar with excellent views of the sunset."

for a fleeting moment, caleb seemed almost unsure of himself. a flash of vulnerability to a trained eye.[break][break]

but it took only her first move, and the uncertainty she thought she glimpsed in him melted away all at once. no, with that smile, caleb harcourt definitely knew what he was doing.[break][break]

maybe he was like her. maybe he was even dangerous.[break][break]

she approached and took his hand easily. the promise of adventure was far better than the promise of the musty motel room that had awaited her on the other side of town.[break][break]

”okay. sounds fun.” she smiled, ‘i know you’ eyes betraying no thoughts of caution. ”am i riding with you then?”[break][break][break]
