The open ocean was a merciful distraction, one Caleb had been in desperate need of lately. The Rangers had been running him into the ground, and though dealing with the continued aftermath of the Mt. Chimney and Kyurem incidents was necessary work, he was utterly and thoroughly exhausted.[break][break]
Lyra glided through the waves with unmatched expertise, and Caleb sighed softly in contentment as the sea breeze blew back his hair and caressed his cheeks. He breathed in deep, savoring the temporary escape from the grind. Out here, the most he had to worry about was avoiding sunburn.[break][break]
Shutting his eyes, he began to drift off...[break][break]
Lyra trilled a warning and Caleb's eyes snapped back open. Well, he'd never had much luck - why would it start now?[break][break]
Sitting up, he shifted to look in the direction the Lapras was gazing, noticing several massive shapes struggling against the tide, bodies washed up on the nearby Dewford Beach. "Wailord?" He guessed.[break][break]
He thought about ignoring them but...[break][break]
"Take us over," he sighed, resigned. A past version of Caleb might not have cared, but he was a different man now...no matter how tired. "They look like they need some help."

she was in town on business. earlier that day, she’d had a serendipitous encounter with rika, a coordinator for a local mining company as she’d taken her lunch at a small café. rika had nearly had her purse stolen when nina had stepped in to save the day, planting a seed of friendship carried on a knowing wind.[break][break]

work was short in the beginning. all that took was a little watering and attention. a coffee the next day, when they’d run into each other again by chance. for the time in between, she was free to shed clothes for swimwear in the approaching summer heat, and roam less familiar shores.[break][break]

at the sight of beached wailord, she urged her water dragon closer, sliding off into the merciful coolness of the waves when close enough to stand.[break][break]

on the shore, her gyarados soaked the burning sand beneath her feet as she assessed the situation, before she noticed the approaching lapras and its trainer behind a curve of blubber.[break][break]

”hey! are you coming to help?” she called to Caleb Harcourt with a wave.[break][break]

if he wasn’t, he was about to get roped into it.
