After the beating Walking Wake gave them, his sygna suit needs some time in the lab for repairs. Once more, deprived of a dragon’s soul, he is wholly himself.[break][break]
Rangers passing by the breakroom give the men queer looks. They whisper among themselves. Having just taken down a mighty foe, Navy is willing to overlook them. The company’s good, and he has it on good authority some of the rangers at the base know how to cook. Arceus is in heaven, the Elite Four is fully staffed for the first time in months, all is as it should be.[break][break]
“You’re a natural, man.” Navy grins, carefree, like it’s all fun and games. He’s forgotten, as he so often does, his own words. This isn’t a game. Their lives are at stake. To think you are invincible is to invite disaster, but damn if it doesn’t feel like the League is invincible right now.[break][break]
“Hell, give it a few years of steady training, maybe you’ll knock Silph out of his spot.” There’s a hint of heat at the mention of , everburning low hatred steeping the waters of Navy’s ire. “Guess we’d have to duke it out to see who’d get to be the fighting guy.”[break][break]
Another drink. He wipes foam from his beard and looks to Eddie.[break][break]
“So how d’you feel ‘bout your first battle, soldier boy?”

Any lingering looks or unkind whispers fizzled out into indistinct static at the boundary of Eddie's awareness. He grinned too, just as easy and broad as his new favorite drinking buddy, as the color rose to his cheeks both from the effects from the alcohol and from the praise coming from a man he'd quickly come to admire, [break][break]

“Yer just flatterin' me,” he chuckled, tapping Navy's arm with a fist, careful even in his inebriation not to sock him proper. [break][break]

But wasn't that a hell of a thought? Knocking out of his seat at the Elite Four, that is. Eddie grinned wider, somehow, at the thought of that handsome face contorting into an expression of shock as Eddie proudly lorded his hypothetical victory over him. Maybe he ought to look into taking on the gym circuit one of these days, [break][break]

“Feelin' great, if I'm bein' honest. But that's prob'ly 'cause you did most of the work.” [break][break]

And because he was half-way to shit-faced. Eddie hurried his way down that particular road with a couple more gulps of his own tankard of mead, because while it wasn't his typical drink of choice, he'd try just about anything once. When he finally came up for air with a contented sigh, he took a moment to wipe the remnants from his upper lip before continuing, [break][break]

“So what's next, boss? Any more dragons that need slayin', or princesses that need rescuin'?” [break][break]

A bit of jest, but Eddie wouldn't be entirely surprised if that did come up as some kind of assignment or operation at some point. Hoenn was weird like that.

“I’ll let you in on a little secret.” He says conspiratorially, as if he is about to betray the League’s deepest trust. “I don’t…really dig princesses, or slaying dragons. Hell, I think they’re more relatable than most people I meet.” A man knows precisely where he stands with a dragon, and they are creatures who do not ascribe to the lies mankind tells themselves.[break][break]
“Warrior women? That’s where it’s at. That’s what I love ‘bout Melody. She’s damn strong. , remember her? Damn strong.” He says with admiration and a hint of attraction he would never admit while sober, especially while in a committed relationship to another woman. It’s a little secret, shared between brothers after a fight worthy of the word.[break][break]
Yet, just outside, people whisper. They’re arguing among themselves, trying to figure out who’s going to tell him something. It takes away from the reverie. Leaning forward, he waves a hand like a myrmidon receiving a visitor in his tent. A reluctant ranger steps forward.[break][break]
“What is it?”[break][break]
“Uh, sir, check the, check…” Picking up a remote, he turns on a TV placed there to entertain folk on their breaks. Switching through channels, it eventually settles on a news station. There, in big bold words, everything is made plain.[break][break]
ATTACK ON MT. PYRE. DETAILS UNCLEAR. AND ON SCENE.

A reporter says meaningless drivel, drowned out by the words flashing in front of him. Somewhere in the distance is a massive explosion of flames. It knocks the man speaking to the camera off his feet.[break][break]
Navy’s breath catches in his throat.

“Yer secret's safe with me,” Eddie reassured the other man with a coy smile, “Hell, I ain't big on princesses neither.” [break][break]

For reasons he would not elaborate on, because while the mead had loosened his tongue some, Eddie sure as shit wasn't that drunk yet. Though hell, did he really think Navy would judge him? They were now brothers forged in the fires of war, and Eddie trusted him with his life. Why shouldn't he trust the man with something more trivial? [break][break]

Either way, while he couldn't relate to Navy's tastes entirely, Eddie could at least appreciate what he felt was the most important takeaway from all of this, [break][break]

“Hell yeah, man!” he chuckled loudly, clinking his tankard against Navy's own, “Gotta love someone that can kick yer ass.” [break][break]

But all that boyish mirth evaporated upon the Ranger's approach and the tuning in to the news station. The erupting flames and plumes of smoke were sobering in more ways than one, [break][break]

“Shit.” [break][break]

He was only half-aware of how the man next to him stilled, seized by some unspoken something, because all Eddie could think about in that moment was the fact that he was sitting on his ass in this goddamn mess hall while some disaster was threatening to tear another corner of Hoenn apart, [break][break]

“We oughta move out, do somethin'.” [break][break]

Because not only was that up there, all bright smiles and Apollonian beauty, but so was Navy's girl, and if Eddie were in his shoes, he'd tear apart half of the god damn region on his way to her. [break][break]

Eddie tried to rise to his feet but felt his legs sway beneath him, deadened by drink and by fear. He plopped down onto his seat with a frustrated grunt and balled a fist against his leg. Wasn't it just like him to be so goddamn useless when some real devastation was going down?

His eyes linger on the flame. Eddie’s voice, save the call to action, becomes so much background noise. Dull eyes stare at the screen. They stare as one man who is not Kyle walks out of the inferno.[break][break]
Matias Silph lives. Kyle Lopez is nowhere to be seen. was fighting for her life, alongside four of Hoenn’s best. She stands resplendent, like any champion should. stands like an imagined childhood hero, riding in to save the day with a Pokemon he always saw as a savior.[break][break]
And there he is, sitting in Area Zero. Navy sees it in the newscaster’s eyes: they’re starting to realize what’s going on. It’s his duty to stand up and help. Eddie’s right. They should mount up, fly over, help with the rescue.[break][break]
Yet all he can do is sit there. Leaning back, all the jovial mirth induced by a shared drink does is hold him back. His eyes stare up at nothing, remembering idle dreams shared with Kyle beneath the dyna tree.[break][break]
“…damn it.” He finally says, standing up and chucking a remote clean through the television screen. It sparks, fizzling out to nothing. “Fuck!” He kicks over a table, as if the act of fury will bring back those lost.

Eddie grit his teeth as he watched the coverage continue, equally awed and horrified. His friend was alive, he realized with some relief when Matias was recovered from that inferno, but what about the other folks containing the devastation? He didn't recognize the names or faces of a couple of them, save for passing references to notable figures during his military training, but one name stuck out to Eddie like a nagging itch. Kyle Lopez. Kyle, Kyle- why the hell did that name sound so familiar? [break][break]

When recognition finally dawned on him it turned immediately to shock. , the guy with the “Ho-Oh powers”, one of the first people Eddie had bumped into when he moved to Hoenn at the end of December? The guy who had, admittedly, done most of the legwork in dealing with Kyogre, and doted on Eddie's Growlithe like it was his own. What the hell was he doing up there? And more importantly, why hadn't he come back down from the fiery mountain? [break][break]

Maybe it was just a matter of time. Maybe he was just busy up there taking care of the volcano, or something. The guy could summon Suicune and Raikou to do his goddamn bidding, there was no way he wasn't making it out of there in one piece... right? [break][break]

That train of thought was abruptly interrupted by the shattering of the TV screen and subsequent booting of the table Eddie sat at. He suddenly scrambled to his feet, fists balling at his sides in knee-jerk anger, [break][break]

“Shit, Navy–!” [break][break]

But hell, didn't the guy have every right to be pissed? They were both sitting here, powerless, and that lack of agency was poison to men like them, the doers and the fighters. Eddie let some of his own anger go with a sharp exhale through his nose and steeled himself as he took a step towards the other man, reaching out to grab his arm, [break][break]

“Let's get outta here, yeah?” Eddie began again through his approach, voice measured but undercut by wary tension, ”Get some fresh air, work some'a the booze outta our systems.” [break][break]

Though at this point, Eddie figured the guy was just as likely to sock him, but hey, whatever helped Navy calm down was fine by him.

His arm is rough like the calloused scales of a Garchomp. Steel eyes darken, a hint of draconic madness threatening to boil over to the surface. At the death, at the sensation that there is absolutely nothing he can do, he feels terrible anger. Eddie means no harm, none at all. Eddie has been nothing but friendly to him. [break][break]
Yet still, Navy’s body shifts. He reacts like a beast whose territory has been invaded, swinging on instinct. Only when his fist is flying through the air does he realize what he is doing, and who he is doing it to. [break][break]
When next he can think, he feels his right hand caught in an ironclad grip mere inches from Eddie’s face. Shuwen appeared in a flash of red, grabbing him. The Urshifu betrays no emotion, not a hint. He simply holds Navy in place as if he was a dragon in the black dragon’s brood. Quiet eyes question if Navy is done, flicking towards Eddie as if to instruct the fighting master on whom he should be addressing. [break][break]
“…damn it.” He swears, an echo of his earlier swear, as if a gnawing thought isn’t eating away at him, that his best friend, the first friend he ever made so long ago, Hoenn’s invincible champion, is dead. He died saving someone who murdered his Pokémon and called it a just act. He died for the woman he loved, with whom he is drifting apart. [break][break]
“Shit, man…I’m sorry.” Navy says the words, not feeling the warm tears rolling down his cheeks.

Eddie was prepared for the collision of fist against face, but found himself more surprised than anything when that blow never came. Brown eyes flicked from Navy to the bear that now stood at his side, stern and scarred, holding his trainer back, [break][break]

“You ain't got a damn thing to apologize for.” [break][break]

Because Navy didn't. Eddie couldn't imagine the sort of despair that must have been consuming the most battle-hardened man he'd ever met, who stood before him shedding tears of mourning in front of Arceus and everyone. But Eddie did know that every fiber in his being was telling him to fix it, to comfort him, even if the means to do so eluded him at the moment. [break][break]

Clearing out the peanut gallery was probably a good place to start, though, because when Eddie turned his head, lingering Rangers watched with slack-jawed astonishment from the fringes of the room. Narrowed eyes and an angry scowl sent most of them packing, but some of the more audacious still remained, busying themselves with whatever they could just to have an excuse to stay nearby, [break][break]

“I'm here ta listen, if you wanna talk. Hell, I'm here even if ya don't wanna talk.” [break][break]

Eddie suddenly realized that his grip on Navy's arm had grown tight, holding him with a newfound protectiveness as he caught a couple of Rangers whispering to each other out of the corner of his eye. He let go, letting his own arm drop back to his side, [break][break]

“But I wasn't kiddin' about gettin' some fresh air, if yer up for it.” [break][break]

Anything to get Navy away from the judgment of strangers. Anything to make any of this better.

And oh the foes Eddie will face. The Dark Triad, Eternatus, Rocket, even his own side. Humanity tear at each other’s throats with reckless, joyful abandon. Something will eventually notice Eddie. Something will smile on him, or make a protracted effort to kill him.[break][break]
He finds the image scares him as much as the sight of his brother’s face, half torn off after Sootopolis, or his mother’s after he inadvertently murdered her.[break][break]
“Yeah.” He says, gently turning to leave. His eyes harden again when he sees the rangers gossiping. A look sends them running. Having just seen the League’s fighting master throw a punch, no one is in a hurry to see if Shuwen will intervene twice. Instead, he walks outside.[break][break]
There’s still light out. The light wins another day. Their universe remains intact. Kyle is gone, and the world keeps spinning. He takes out a cigar, lighting it with shaking hands.[break][break]
“I met Kyle when I was eight. We were the same age. He was some orphan. Can’t believe someone would be shitty enough to abandon him – miss out on a shot at being part of his life. He thought I was weird when I wanted to hang out at his place, the orphanage, instead of going home, but he never pushed too hard.” Another drag, he’s puffing like a dragon again.[break][break]
“I hate what this war turned him into.”

The tremble of Navy's hands was the thing that convinced Eddie to finally break out his own pack of emergency smokes when they made their way outside. Thank God the crumpled pack of Lucky Strikes were in his pocket instead of sitting on his nightstand back home; Eddie thumbed open the box, slipped a cigarette between his lips, and sent it smoldering with the novelty Torchic-printed lighter he had bought when he first moved to Hoenn. [break][break]

Eddie took a drag as he listened, his lungs burning and stretching as they filled with acrid smoke, and his heart ached as it drank deep from the well of his friend's grief. Many probably knew Kyle as the champion, the avatar of Ho-Oh, but Navy knew the guy as a childhood friend, and wasn't that about as close as you could get to someone? [break][break]

But that just made the grief all the worse. People would be sad that their champ-turned-martyr had passed, but to lose a friend was a sort of loss Eddie wouldn't wish on just about anybody. He scowled a little at the thought and took another quick drag. [break][break]

As he flicked the ashes of his cigarette away, Eddie frowned further as he considered something. Maybe this would be a misstep, but Eddie had never been the type to second-guess himself before, so why should he start doing so now? [break][break]

“What was he like?” [break][break]

There was curiosity there, but something else, too. There was probably a lot of baggage surrounding the memory of Kyle the champ, but maybe there would be happier memories of Kyle the man. It was a shame that Eddie had never gotten the chance to know him, but maybe he still could, through the eyes of someone that loved him.

“A fuckin’ jerk.” He says with pained, tearful laughter and a strained smile. “The nicest jerk you’ll ever meet.” Each inhalation in to his lungs is harder than the last, most of the smoke not even going down. The taste lingers on his tongue, its own distraction from the day’s troubles. [break][break]
“Treated life like it was a game or a story. We used to give each other shit, trying to figure out who the main guy would be and who’s the hero’s best friend.” Both of those roles are prone to being filled by dead men.[break][break]
“They’re gonna call him a hero now, ‘cause he was one.” He looks off at the sky, talking for himself as much as Eddie. “The thing ‘bout heroes is, they’re mourned and then forgotten. They’ll build statues, they’ll teach kids ‘bout him in history class for a while, but there’ll be more heroes. He’ll be forgotten, then they’ll be forgotten. On and on, so long as there’s war.”[break][break]
“I wish we could live in a world that didn’t need heroes. Maybe he wouldn’t be remembered, he’d be bored out of his mind, but he’d be here. With his husband. Jerk didn’t even tell me he was marrying Noah ‘til he’d helped and the whole squad stop a meteor from destroying the region.”

Eddie's willpower crumbled, and he took long drag after long drag until his cigarette burned down to the filter. A storyteller, a hero, a friend; Eddie felt a little bitterness at the fact that he'd never get to know Kyle, and a little more selfish bitterness at the fact that Eddie didn't think anyone would have such kind words to say about him once his time was finally up. He tossed the smoldering filter to the ground and stamped it out beneath his shoe, extinguishing the thought with it. It was fucked up to indulge in his own pity-party at a time like this. [break][break]

He took a step closer to Navy, and watched him watch the sky out of the corner of his eye, [break][break]

“Yer probably half-right. About the memorials an' statues an' all that. But I dunno about the part about forgettin'.” [break][break]

Eddie averted his gaze to look up at the sky too, aimlessly staring at nothing in particular, [break][break]

“You ain't forgettin' him anytime soon, and now, neither am I. And I'm sure as hell his husband ain't, or any'a the other people that loved him.” [break][break]

Something in his chest tightened; God, what would be worse? To be a widower, or to leave one behind? [break][break]

“People'll keep talkin' about him, reminiscin'. They ain't gonna let him go, let his memory go. Hell, the way I figure, his memory's gonna outlive all of us.” [break][break]

But that was probably just the romantic in him talking. Maybe Navy would appreciate the sentiment, though. Or maybe Navy would just try to punch him again, which would be totally deserved. Though, speaking of, a sudden, absurd thought crossed Eddie's mind, and he couldn't stop a ghost of a smile from tugging at the corner of his mouth, [break][break]

“Bet the wedding was a helluva shindig, 'less they eloped. Can't imagine ya in a suit though, if I'm bein' honest.”

Eddie would normally reject the notion of being a 'good guy'; he was simple, and strong, but the virtue of such characteristics was neutral at best. He was also often loud-mouthed and carried along by the twisting whims of his impassioned heart, which were decidedly negative traits. But as Navy sat there, crying his heart out, Eddie was, for once, inclined to take those words at face value, [break][break]

“You ain't half bad yourself,” he replied, a little deflective but entirely genuine. [break][break]

And then the gray storm clouds of melancholy finally broke, if only for one glorious, fleeting moment, with that pained laugh from his friend. A smile and a laugh, even one still choked by misery, was enough to make Eddie smile a little, too, [break][break]

“That's sweet. The two a'them runnin' away together, that is.” [break][break]

New warmth bled into Eddie's voice as he considered the clandestine marriage of two of the League's finest. That was all you needed in the end, as far as he was concerned; just you and the most important person in your world. Curiosity suddenly gnawed at Eddie when he considered just who that person was for Navy, [break][break]

“Least that makes you even, then, missing each other's weddings and all,” Eddie chuckled.
