Serves Lam right, he figures. It’s not like he’s been banging down Matias’ door in the time that’s passed since Mt. Chimney. He’s kept to himself, trying to sort through the after-ripples.[break][break]
“Yours?” His head tilts, “Oh. Right.” He remembers the leaf, somehow perpetually present in his pocket. He fishes it out, offering it over with little protest.[break][break]

only after the MAGICAL LEAF is presented and placed on the palm of his hand does he circle back to his missed greeting, delivering it with a smile: "hi."

as he has done time and time before, he tosses the MAGICAL LEAF, watching it slice through the air to conjure a gust of wind that breezes past them, and after a blink of an eye, VIRIZION appears out a green blur that ripples in their peripherals.

"i hear you've found yourself a new knight."

he places his palm on the sword of justice's forehead, then chuckles as he glances over at his friend.

"sorry, another knight."

The smile is returned, though it’s maybe a little feebler than the one his friend gives him. “Hey. Glad to see you’re up and moving around.”[break][break]
It’s genuine— Lam does mean it, but there’s a degree of reservation too. A continued reconciling in his mind with what he saw on Mt. Chimney, and what he’d later learned had happened after Solgaleo had pulled Matias over the side.[break][break]
His mind doesn’t dwell for long; not when Virizion emerges in a swirling flurry of spring green when called forth. Watching them reconnect, Lam falters at what Matias says.[break][break]
His expression crumples into confusion.[break][break]
“What? No, that was just..” Temporary, he doesn’t finish because he doesn’t want to unintentionally offend Virizion.[break][break]
But that’s all it had been, hadn’t it? Mutual assistance. For Matias’ sake.[break][break]

their confusion is unexpected but given how little virizion has told him over the years, it's not entirely uncalled for.

He can’t say exactly why he assumed as much, though maybe it lays somewhere in a sense of worthiness. Despite Virizion’s acceptance of his help on Mt. Chimney, it isn’t as if Lam suddenly found himself more capable than he had been before.[break][break]
In fact, up until the moment he’d let the leaf loose and the Sword had appeared, he had been feeling pretty insufficient.[break][break]
“That makes sense..” he agrees, brows pinched in thoughtfulness. His gaze follows Virizion as he speaks to Matias. “I guess I just hadn’t expected it to want that.”[break][break]
Too many cooks in the kitchen, or something to that effect.[break][break]
Lam feels the little jab and rolls with it, swatting back halfheartedly even though he’s quickly backpedaling. “What? No, that’s not what I meant!”

He shakes his head, adamant. “Nope.”[break][break]
A rueful little smile cracks the corner of his mouth. Something that relieves the pressure and apprehension of meeting Matias today. “I’m sure it has its reasons. Virizion seems far more intuitive than most.”[break][break]
Or that’s what he likes to think, anyway. He doesn’t know it all that well, yet. He also doesn’t acknowledge that his words now could easily be turned back on him, as a case for why it has chose to ally itself with him of all people.[break][break]
Truthfully, he still doesn’t really know what to make of what happened out at Mt. Chimney. A part of him doesn’t really know how he should treat Matias, or how he should regard him. There’s a certain wariness set into the slope of his shoulders.[break][break]
But at the same time, Lam opts to treat him as closely to how he always has. It’s the only option he feels comfortable with.[break][break]
Lam could confront him, lecture him–sure, he has plenty of options at his disposal, but none of them really feel right. Simple honesty could work, though, maybe.[break][break]
His glance cuts to Matias and a scoff of laughter follows as he shrugs his own shoulders. “Didn’t really feel like a hero.” It’s not self-deprecating, the way he says this. Just simple fact. “I was pretty scared, man.” His eyes sharpen as they hold his friend’s, though not accusatory or unkindly so. “You scared me.”[break][break]
“I’ll spare you the yelling and the confrontations. I’m sure you’ve had your fill, but shit, dude. Thought we’d lost you there.”

what more can he say but that? he has accepted the blame and all the wrong he has done; now, he can only hope to make up for them. he supposes he could start with an apology, but even that feels superficial and bare at best.

how does he make up for almost ending an entire region? for almost killing his closest friends?

"losing me wouldn't be the worst thing, you know. i wanted to be the one who went." but, obviously, the world had other plans. "i'm glad i wasn't, and i know there's so much to apologize for, but i have no idea where to start."

He doesn’t comment on the loss, on the aftershock ripple that swept through the League when it came out that kyle lopez was gone. What happened? he wants to ask. Solgaleo pulled him over the side of the mountain face, and the next they’d heard—[break][break]
But he’s sure Matias has received that particular question enough times for it to feel grating.[break][break]
And though Lam isn’t too sure what he’s doing here or where exactly they stand, he’s not here to be combative.[break][break]
“I don’t know what to tell you,” he answers as a hand pushed through his hair, “you kinda fucked up.” A simple way of putting it, and underselling it, but the words aren’t laced with venom or vitriol.[break][break]
They both know it’s a simple fact. They both know that apologies feel hollow under the vastness of it.[break][break]
“Start where you can, I guess,” Lam leans back against Virizion’s sturdy side, arms folding, “but you’ll probably have to start small.” He pauses, “And be patient about it.”[break][break]

he snorts, eyes rolling good-naturedly. "yeah, kinda my point in saying as much." it would have to be a learning experience - that much was he was certain of.[break][break]

the breeze stirs up the grass, ruffles through his hair, and kicks up leaves that swirl around virizion as they prance forward. The smile that settles on his lips isn't bright or broad, but small as it is - it's present all the same.[break][break]

they hadn't exactly given him a timeframe to his suspension, and when that happens, it's only safe to assume one thing: "indefinitely."

but as they have come to learn, matias silph is a man that never heeds order, especially not when they come from the top. he is, however, smarter now, if not a little wiser. he will bide his time.

at the mention of the sword of justice, he nods, promising.

"i will."

and after a moment, he continues.

"if we're being honest, i don't think i was ever a good fit for virizion."

Indefinitely. It’s an answer that doesn’t need elaboration. Lam nods, taking it silently for what it is without following up with an outcry or some sort of commiseration. It’s entirely likely that anything might be like rubbing salt in the wound, so he leaves it be.[break][break]
A sigh of relief slips free when Matias agrees–a knot of tension in his chest that he hadn’t been fully aware of easing and unwinding.
Though it was Virizion’s choice, there had still bene apprehension that Matias would see it differently. That Lam had chosen to take something.[break][break]
The admission gives him pause, though, and he frowns at his friend.[break][break]
“What? Why?”[break][break]
He looks between the man and the sword, uncomprehending of why they wouldn’t fit–hand to hilt.
