the style for today is as follows.

a simple black overcoat: a Black Vittoriana Mandani Jacket. It’s elegant in the light but extremely simple in the dark, as the floral prints seem to mix in with the jacket under a certain brightness. What really stands out are the gold trimming of the buttons and pocket square, but they are secondary to the jacket itself which, as stated before, in the light, will have people gawking at its intricacy.

a simple black dress shirt: 100% Kalosian cotton, stitched, and cuffed. high double button spread collar- the top four buttons undone to give off a slightly more relaxed feel.

simple black pants: Black Vittoriana Trousers. The same floral print as the overcoat with a leather belt that sports a golden buckle, highlighting the neat tuck of his dress shit.

simple black loafers: Black Diamante Leather Monk Gold Loafers. the beauty in these is not only the golden buckle, but the blue soles and internal fabric. the royal blue color is a direct contrast to the black, but still finds a way to be visually appealing and not too overbearing. its shines in the dark and falters in the light, uniquely contrasting the overcoat and trousers in this way.

Sevastian finds himself stood outside of the elite four member's chamber, collecting himself and straightening up his ensemble a couple of times before finding his way in through the entrance.

while he is greeted with a plethora of bits, baubles, oddities and ends, what really catches his attention is the boxing ring placed in the center of the chamber.

as he draws closer he places a hand on the ropes and skims them with his open hand for a moment, pondering silently if this ring was ever used for its intended purpose or only pokemon battles.

then his eye catches his client, the interviewee- of sorts- for the evening.

“Mr. Navidson~” he says somewhat cheerfully with a slight smile. “Thank you for having me. I hope I didn’t arrive too quickly as to interrupt your you time.” a cordial comment despite Sevastian arriving at his allotted timing, and not a moment too soon.

Plastered on a wall above the bar at the far end of the chamber is a plasma television. The man watching the screen wears no intricate outfit. Sitting at his left hand is a tattered brown hat, the sort worn by old desperados on the trail. At his right sits a glass of golden mead - the drink of warriors. Deepest grey eyes look up at a battle waged on a pitch in distant Galar. [break][break]
Two giants battle across the world in an arena the Elite knows intimately. Motostoke’s fiery gym leader battles a foreign trainer armed with a Mightyena - perhaps a homage to Hoenn’s fallen champion, Kyle Lopez. Navy is on the edge of his seat when a voice breaks him from the reverie. [break][break]
Turning, he regards Sevastian with even eyes. He’s dressed well enough to make the older man self-conscious about his simple, if pragmatic, ware. No one is going to turn their heads at thrift store jeans or a dark blue track jacket. [break][break]
It’s dismissed. No use being jealous or self-conscious in a time of war. Instead, the sheriff dons a weathered smile. Rumors persisted for months that he was stretching himself thin, sallying forth from Dewford and Ever Grande to fight the good fight. May has seen him staying here, recovering from a short stint in a prismatic penitentiary. [break][break]
“Don’t sweat it, man. Glad to have you here.” And he is. Even now, at the eleventh hour, with war looming on the horizon, branding is important. Public figures have an image to maintain, and legacies to build. “This match is wrapping up soon. The kid doesn’t know how to use a Mightyena like Kyle did.” There’s a hint of grief in that last word: did, with all its terrible finality. [break][break]
“Have a seat, Beau. You a drinker? My bar’s stocked full of pretty much anything you could want that was bottled this year.” He says a quiet prayer to Arceus that Sevastian isn’t the sort of man to ask for an ultra specific Kalosian wine, but he doesn’t like his odds given the suit.

how charming it is to find one so lax despite the circumstances of his- lets say- status, for lack of a more fitting word.

Sevastian supposes that even if they are total strangers it would be odd to be on one's toes in a situation such as this. so he obliges and listens as the man goes on about the Mightyena displayed on the plasma, noticing the slight strain in his face when he had placed the recently deceased Kyle Lopez as a “did” and not “does”

when offered a drink he does give a nod with a slight smile while making his way over to the bar.

“I… have mixed feelings when it comes to spectacle battles. On one hand it it does display the dedication to the training of ones pokemon. But on the other, there’s always a risk of injury and in some cases exploitation.”

he speaks lightly, taking a seat while eyeing the screen with a mild fascination. when he comes to a stop, he looks to Michael with a smile, pushing that extremely confident offer he made.

“How about a glass of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Vaniville Town.” There’s a slight lift in his tone when he finishes as if he is confident the man’s assemblage lacks something quite so… particular.

“If you don’t have that I’ll just take a Galarian Rye Whiskey.” it fits what’s currently playing after all.

“Galarian rye whiskey it is!” He speaks without missing a beat, quietly lamenting how the creator above spurned him. Turning his back, he pulls some top shelf whiskey, imported straight from Galar. A quiet chuckle passes as he remembers this is Cillian Quinn’s favorite brand.[break][break]
Wish we lived in a world where I got to drink with that guy. He laments, but he isn’t about to give someone from the media a line that juicy. Rocket’s already winning the PR game from his point of view, they’ve got enough sound bites.[break][break]
Turning back to Sevastian, he places the glass before the man, returning to his own mead. Taking a sip, he reflects on the man’s words, tasting the mead as if it is the spoken wisdom of his guest.[break][break]
“Hard to feel that way, living here. Feels like you’re runnin’ the risk of Rocket or some pissed off god messing up the party no matter where you go. I like these matches. Reminds me that things are normal somewhere. Unova and Galar are both great for that.”[break][break]
Reaching to his bottle, Navy finds the mead has vanished. Flicking his eyes down the bar, the frog of the hair makes his entrance. Hattori lounges on the bar, skin burned black by Groudon’s lava. One eye lazily looks at both of the humans while he pours, sliding the glass back down the bar to his Lord.[break][break]
“You’re in a good mood today.” He smiles warmly at his Greninja. “This here’s Sevastian Beau, Hattori. He’s a big fan.” Navy’s words drain a bit of that confidence. The one eyed frog scratches his upper lip, obscured by a red tongue. His eyes pivot up to the match, which has finally been called in the gym leader’s favor.

as the whiskey is placed before him, Sevastian nods in appreciation to the man, taking it into his hands with his index, middle and thumb to take a sip from the glass before placing it back onto the bar.

a grimace follows before his features soften, his tastebuds not yet acclimated to the strength of the amber liquor. “... First sip is always the hardest.” he whispers before opening his mouth to speak aloud, only to hold his tongue with the materialization of the Greninja.

taking out a notepad, he flips to an empty page before setting it onto the bar, clicking a pen twice before setting it next to the open jotter.

“Nice to meet you Hattori, I’ve seen and read of your endeavors and can’t help but find myself impressed and astounded by the magnitude of your feats.”

Sevastian’s eyes turn to Michael’s, his own hand placed atop the pen and paper. “Have you taught Hattori how to write? It would be nice to have the interviewer and interviewee able to properly communicate, but if not, it’s no problem.”

he produces a high quality voice recorder, placing it in the middle of the two men, a little closer to Michael than himself.

“If need be, we can record everything and have it properly transcribed later.”

Sevastian’s question rouses a genuine, wide, toothy smile from Navy. Looking to his Greninja, who tries to hide his expression in his red scarf-tongue, he pats Hattori on the head.[break][break]
“He can text a little.” The words threaten laughter the way a cracked dam threatens to explode. “Back when the top champ, Lopez, evaluated my gym, Hattori swiped his phone after he unlocked it. Guess what he did? He texted MATIAS SILPH and Eva Morales ‘u up’, like Kyle was looking for a hookup or something.” He leaves Hattori’s motivation, to play wingman for an impossible crush, unsaid. Best that bit stay off the record.[break][break]
“I’d kill to see what else was in Kyle’s phone.” Even if the blunt truth probably involved nothing more interesting than a spicy picture or two of noah faber and far too many pay to win RPGs for one phone. A champion’s budget bought a man power across all avenues of life.[break][break]
“Don’t think he can really write, but I think I know the guy pretty well.” Hattori nods his agreement before Navy turns back to Sevastian. “He’s the most reliable Pokemon I’ve ever trained. Doubt anyone needs it repeated, but this region’s going through all kinds of trouble. There’s nobody better at thinking on his feet than Hattori. When you’re out there,” he nods up to the screen, “doing a League match, there’s rules. No rules on the battlefield. Just lots of people that want you gone.”

“On god?” he mouths in somewhat astonishment at the confession. sending such a risqué text to two of leagues big hitters takes a lot of guts.

“How brave.” Sevastian mutters as he tucks the voice recorder back into his jacket.

“To hear that such a stoic has a mischievous side is humbling to say the least.”

a chuckle follows as he jots that tidbit down into the open notepad.

adjusting the positon of the glass, he takes another sip from the whiskey, pushing it a little further away from himself as to pace and not overindulge.

“Reliability is a another is one of the most valuable things shared between a pokemon and its partner. I only have two pokemon myself. I trust them with my life and they do what they can to make it easier, but they’re still a lot to manage. I can only image how stressful it must be for one who is at the forefront of this war, of sorts, to be put into so many life threatening scenarios alongside those you love and trust.”

he hovers the pen over his notepad paper and looks to Greninja as he takes a breath and then continues.

“Which begs the question: how do you keep your cool through it all? Is it due to Michael’s training? Is it because of your own personal experiences? Natural talent? Please, enlighten me.”

with this the interview had begun, one leg crossing over another as a flash of the blue sole pierced through darkness before pointing itself towards the bar counter. his full focus rested on the Greninja, giving it the attention he would a human in the interviewee position.

Hattori listens like any good shinobi should. A finger raises in interjection when the word Michael is said. The frog shakes his head, eye falling upon his Lord.[break][break]
“Uh, call me Navy. I’ve been meaning to change it for years, but Navy Navidson sounds too cheesy. I need to get hitched so I can take my wife’s last name.” He laughs awkwardly, but doesn’t dwell on it. No point in taking away from the question. The trainer looks back to his partner Pokemon, wondering how he will respond to a question like that.[break][break]
This time, Hattori points a finger at Navy. His hands twine into the rough shape of a heart before he thumps his own chest in a show of solidarity. Afterwards, he hops to the ground before the bar. He has no words, but he has tools with which he can tell a story. Smoke billows from Hattori’s hand, sculpted with precision while it holds its shape. The smokescreen takes the shape of a Greninja much larger than himself – a typical specimen of his species.[break][break]
Beside them is the rough shape of a human. Hattori’s hand traces to the crowd on the screen. They cheer for a flashy Aggron, or an oversized Garchomp. They’re humans that would dismiss him outright, were it not for the fighting master.[break][break]
The smoke is swatted away, wafting towards the room’s ventilation and rushing harmlessly outside. A second figure is shaped from fresh smoke, this one resembling a man holding a creature Hattori’s size.[break][break]
Hattori looks to his Lord, wondering if he understands. Navy pulls his hat down, trying to look stoic.[break][break]
“…if I’m not calm, then the guy who thought I was worth a damn dies. That right?” Strange how he never truly realized that Hattori and him are very similar.[break][break]
The Greninja nods, pleased with that response. He looks to Sevastian and awaits his next question.

“I meant no harm in misnaming you, Navy. I apologize.” said promptly as he looked to the Elite, then back to the Greninja as it began displaying its words through smoke.

it makes his heart skip a beat as the pokemon used it own smokescreen to beautifully craft a display of its words. Sevastian is diligent in his viewing, brow furrowing as he attempted to decipher the sayings in real time, all to no avail.

only when Navy speaks it out did it all come together, the interviewer feeling a slight twinge of shame at his interpretation skills being calling into question by himself alone. it makes him all the more grateful for Navidson’s help.

he writes down a few notes after the explanation, silence as he made small impressions on the paper.

“Well said.” Sevastian states as he finishes his note-taking, a smile settling on his features.

“Have those feelings forced you into situations where you feel the need to overcompensate at any point?”

At this question, Hattori has no need for charades. A voracious series of nods is followed by a scurry to a file cabinet tucked in the corner of the room. Inside are files, nothing classified of course, on some of Hoenn’s most wanted. A number of files are plopped down before Sevastian.[break][break]
First among them is Cillian Quinn, a picture of Lugia right beside him. Hattori points at Cillian, and then at Navy. The shinobi’s long finger points to some oil tucked among the alcohol, and then at a water bottle. All Navy can respond with there is an awkward cough.[break][break]
Next comes Tempest Quinn and the many shadows he is known to use. Hattori makes an audible gulp, pointing at Navy and the picture of Temp before balling his fists up and shadow boxing.[break][break]
“I don’t fight Temp that much.” Navy insists like a child being called out on a bad report card.[break][break]
Last, he draws out a picture of bryan delarosa and the beast’s former patron, Xerneas. Taking out a piece of paper, Hattori draws a square. Inside the square are two humans. Outside, he draws a crude drawing of himself and Xerneas.[break][break]
“Delarosa locked him and me in an arena together without our Pokemon.” Navy clarifies for Sevastian’s sake before something finally clicks after all those months. “Wait, are you telling me you fought Xerneas by yourself while I was-?” With a bit of embarrassment, Hattori nods.[break][break]

with each retelling, Sevastian puts pen to paper, jotting down the important bits of the stories as to properly remember them later. in each he highlights the Greninja’s positive lights more so than the human’s own follys, something he’d imagine Navy would be thankful for.

its only when they get to the part about Xerneas that his pen stopped short, ink beginning to bleed into the paper and form a bitch black spot that seeped into the page below.

his eyes shot up to the Greninja, astonished once more.

“That’s… pretty incredible, honestly. It must not have been easy for you, I can imagine.”

“In Vanta’s research there are stories that tell of Greninja that will lay their lives on the line for their masters, but this is one of the truest examples I’ve had the pleasures of recording.”

he smiles at the Greninja, until as he notices the ink beginning to fill a larger part of the pad and moves to write under it. this will make a beautiful excerpt.

“What do you think your limit is? You’ve fought pokemon at the magnitude of Xerneas in a one-on-one, but do you think there is something that even you won’t be able to handle?”

amber hues return to the Greninja, finishing his jotting with a flick of his wrist.

“Grrrr…” Hattori’s voice is a rasp, like water bubbling at the top of an overfilled pot. The sound seems a growl at first, until he presses his vocabulary to its extreme. The shinobi reaches for a vowel, trying to speak a terrible word into existence. [break][break]
“Grrr…ou…” The vowel sends a jolt of recognition through Hattori’s Lord, who understands where the shinobi is heading at once. Navy looks away again, remembering a terrible battle fought eons away. Sitting behind the bar, sheathed in a scabbard, is the last feather of a fallen Skarmory - a brother to both Navy and Hattori. [break][break]
“Groudon.” Navy finishes for Hattori. The frog nods, suddenly looking frightened. Navy knows the feeling well. Six of his Pokémon walked into that fight. Two survived. Given that he fought one of the League’s own, he doesn’t think it wise to share that. [break][break]
“Good thing he’s on our side.” Navy says, his way of reassuring the little frog. His hand gently holds Hattori’s shoulder. It brings to Hattori’s mind memories of a time when his skin was blue, before Groudon’s terrible fire burned him black. [break][break]
“I won’t ever make you fight if you don’t wanna.” He feels self-conscious at the raw sincerity in his voice, given they have an audience, but Hattori deserves to hear the words.

the question wasn’t truly relevant to his own proclivities, but he figured at the very least the question would make for good filler in the entry. Sevastian was happy that the seed of intrigue bore fruit as lavishly as it did, a small smile setting on his face at the sincere moment the pokemon and master shared with one another.

busied hands write- but not too much- as short and sweet an excerpt as they had given an answer; it was just enough for him to get a better feel for their bond.

“Your relationship is something to be envious of. I’d be jealous myself if it weren’t for my own partners.”

his fingers stop as he finishes his sentence, looking up at Hattori once more.

“Now lets get into the real questions. What’s your favorite food and what do you do to past the time? Follow up question, what’s your favorite color and whats your sign.”

Hattori, like men of any species, is ruled by his stomach. The question of food lights his eye up, the matter of Groudon forgotten. Nothing like food to make the conversation move on. From behind his Pokemon, Navy tosses Sevastian a grateful nod.[break][break]
“I can sure answer for him there. Petaya berries. This guy loves ‘em. Starf berries, too. Lansat berries in a pinch. But it’s always gotta be spicy.” Just speaking about matters of spice makes Hattori salivate. “I picked up a curry recipe, back when Hattori and I were in Galar. He can’t get enough of it now.”[break][break]
“You want some, Sevastian? Wouldn’t take too long to cook up that with some rice. Arceus knows I put a kitchen in here for a reason.” Hattori hops from the bar, grabbing a remote and angling himself so that he can put something on the television. It switches from a live game to a streaming service. Hattori puts on a popular Johtonian show about shinobi and samurai. There are, of course, no subtitles. Most of these shinobi are color-coded, with Hattori lighting up in special delight whenever the red shinobi is on screen.[break][break]
“He really goes in for these shows.” Navy snorts. “Can’t fault his taste. He likes the stuff by older directors.” Not for an instant has the thought that his own distaste for newer movies might have rubbed off on Hattori.[break][break]
“You were born in the middle of August, yeah? That makes him, shit I’m bad with this, a Lion.” A notion which makes Hattori’s chest swell up with pride. “Can’t say I know what any of the star signs mean, but he seems like a damn fine lion to me.”
