When the Pokemon Rangers had asked for an archaeologist to help monitor and aid fossil Pokémon suffering from a mixture of harsh sandstorms, Howard was hoping that GIDEON GRAVES or Remiel Calcifet would have dealt with it, but the director had a museum to run, and Remiel had to deal with whatever insane political nonsense Galar was currently dealing with.

Maybe he was counting all his medals or flying around on Zekrom while laughing at poor people. Howard didn't know. At least someone from Gideon's museum was here to represent.

"Alright, miss, here's the plan." Howard gestured down at the valley he and Roze were peering into. Several Cranidos were huddled under a pile of boulders, waiting for a small sandstorm to subside. "That sandstorm is probably caused by a rampaging Flygon. We calm it, ensure that those Cranidos are safe, and then we go get coffee or something."

Howard wondered if he could get the Pokemon Ranger to foot the bill.

"Any objections?"

Roze had practically jumped at the chance to not only see and assist with something rare like fossil pokémon—especially those not native to Galar as adorable as the Galarian species were—but she'd felt both confident and interested in that she'd be handling this freak sandstorm situation with an archaeological expert. As Howard had explained, Roze had nodded as she noted that from a distance the inclement weather had seemed rather oddly localised, considering its size. She'd agreed with and was impressed by the thought process that it was likely caused by another pokémon. Her own knowledge was a bit more generalised about them that she wouldn't have been able to quite directly call out which one it may be herself, and the young woman was thankful that she'd had someone with more know-how than herself to call a partner for this little ordeal.[break][break]

"No, none at all," Roze had given the archaeologist a determined smile, her gaze had been focused on the small glimpses of the fossil pokémon down below, though had returned quickly to him, she'd wondered if the man would be quite alright given his eye, but she'd felt it'd be ruder to mention it if it seemed that he himself didn't seem to have too many problems with it.[break][break]

At the very least, Howard probably could look forward to that free coffee, if he didn't particularly mind the keen conservationist picking his brain to learn more about these extant relics afterwards.

Sweet, A ranger that actually listened to him? This would be fun. It was certainly better than dealing with the Head Ranger that wanted to date him and the third of the corps that wanted to murder him. Howard could get used to someone actually willing to cooperate.

Maybe this wouldn't be so bad.

"Swell. Our Pokémon can distract the Flygon, stop it from whipping up this storm. Shirley?" He made a clicking sound with his mouth. "C'mere, girl."

Like a primordial beast, the Aerodactyl crawled over Howard's body, her tail flicking like a cat as she regarded Roze with a pale single pale amber eye. The beast matched the owner in this case. Both were missing an eye, but if Howard was able to get buy without one, then so was she.

His better half until the end.

"It's coming." The admin sniffed the air, as if that would allow him to discern the Flygon's location. "What Pokémon did you bring?"

All Howard had were fossils. Good for the mission, bad for anything else.

Even if Roze had been aware of the fact that she was working alongside someone the Pokémon League would likely consider a potential great threat if his identity were quite clearly revealed, in all honesty, she likely would take the same course of actions without even a shadow of a doubt as she did here and would in the near future. Her priority was making sure anyone in danger was safe, after all. Not that the conservationist had even been slightly cognizant of any of this, her attention had been fully focused on the fossil pokémon and to quell the Flygon's rage without causing it too much more distress than they'd already have to, of course she was willing to listen to someone she considered an expert in all this.[break][break]

Roze had shielded her eyes somewhat from the oncoming sandstorm with a single arm and a slight wince, though her confidence continued to shine through despite the tempestuous phenomenon encroaching their position—though her determination had faltered for an ever brief split second as her attention had ended up focused on the Aerodactyl, she'd almost dropped everything to give the fossil pokémon a closer study, in fact. Though nonetheless, she'd quickly thrown out her own poké balls.[break][break]

A sturdy Duraludon had towered in front of the two, standing tall and proud, shielding them from the scraping winds, alongside a Dugtrio readily bobbing their heads as they await, "The other pokémon I have aren't quite suited for these environments, but these two should be able to manage plenty," the conservationist was still looking to expand her repertoire, but for now, she just happened to have some decent partners to tackle this situation.

Joy. At least Shirley could fly. Roze could likely cover their descent into the canyon while his girl fought with the raging desert spirit.

"They'll suffice, don't worry about it." Howard would worry about it, given that it now meant that it was up to him to calm the storm from the sky. There was little to be done about it, but Howard had never been good in a fight. His Pokémon were adept, but Howard himself? Mediocre. "Here it comes."

A hot gust of wind blew over the ridge as the Flygon behind the sandstorm flew overhead. With a yowl, Howard's Aerodactyl flew after it, attacking it from behind with a Ice Fang.

A yowl went up from the Flygon. The sandstorm lessened.

"SCARE, DON'T WOUND!" Howard shouted as he rose from the ridge he and Roze had been hiding behind. The winds made his hat rustle as he began to descend into the canyon, gesturing for the ranger to follow him. Years of hiking experience returned to Howard, letting him pick his way down the canyon walls with minimal difficulty.

Except for the sandstorm. Fuck sand.

"Hop to it, Roze!"

Honestly, Roze did have a pair of Flying pokémon she might be able to use, but, she didn't particularly feel it'd be a good idea to bring them here, her Fletchling was still rather delicate, and her Altaria'd be far too distracted with her cotton plume to be much more help either. Nonetheless, the conservationist had followed, her Duraludon whilst most certainly not a pokémon that would be lifting off the ground any time soon, the towering pokémon stood his ground as he fired off Flash Cannons near the flight of the two pokémon to assist in scaring the Flygon.[break][break]

Roze was aware enough that her Dugtrio's ground attacks wouldn't reach the desert spirit, but what mattered most was its speed, and what more, using the sandstorm for their benefit—the Dugtrio's Sand Force would strengthen the mole pokémon, "Soot, we need a safe passage to the Cranidos," she'd quickly yelled over the howling winds, and by her request, the trio had began to Dig an entrenched path towards them to help provide shelter as they made their way through the valley.

Dugtrio were nice. At Rocket's Ultra Desert base, Howard had used them for the majority of the tilling and fielding of crops. They were surprisingly helpful buggers, as long as you didn't trip one of their Arena Traps. Using one to dig a path towards the Cranidos? Clever.

Howard approved.

"This is convenient! Splendid!" Howard shouted as he followed Roze through the path made by Soot. "Let's make haste!"

The sandstorm continued to slacken as Stormy and Shirley fought against the raging Flygon. A barrage of Flash Cannons and a kick from Shirley sent the beast flying through the air. As it recovered, the sandstorm grew in intensity.

"Damn, we might need to bring it down. Flygon get temperamental way too easily." It was in their nature. Guardians of the desert needed to be willing to protect their territory, and it likely thought that they were encroaching on its turf.

Awfully bold to claim a whole desert.

They closed in on the Cranidos.

"Glad to be of service, Mr. Slayte!" she'd responded with a smile as she'd offered a hand down to their new entrenchment.[break][break]

Roze had frowned somewhat at the idea of taking down the Flygon, even if she might be able to tend to it after the situation was dealt with, she'd also considered the fact that the two of them entering surely wasn't helping in terms of its territorial aggression, but, she knew if they didn't, the situation wouldn't bode well for Mr. Slayte nor herself, let alone the poor Cranidos that had been trapped here in the first place.[break][break]

She'd blown a whistle with her fingers regardless, hoping Stormy could hear it over the winds and ensuing battle, the whistle had been a sign to prepare a Hyper Beam to hopefully help ground the dragon pokémon.[break][break]

As they continued down the path, it was Soot that had reached the Cranidos first, admittedly the sudden intrusion frightening them for a moment before it seemed some sort of rudimentary communication was established by the mole pokémon, with Roze catching up next, "we just want to get you all to safety!" she'd tried her best to explain over the cutting sandswept winds.[break][break]

Several years of grad school to be called 'Mr.'? Howard's life was becoming more and more miserable as time went on. It wasn't like he could get mad at Roze, it'd be like kicking a baby Growlithe or something. Hell, there wasn't enough time to get mad at the cadet, especially with these...

"CRANIDOS!" Howard let out a squeal as the Cranidos herd blinked suspiciously at him and Roze. The archaeologist's eye practically sparkled with excitement as he regarded the ancient Pokémon. "Aren't you the most-"

A Cranidos headbutted Howard in the gut, causing him to stumble backwards and fall over, groaning in pain. After a moment, Howard stumbled back to his feet.

"Cranidos!"

Headbutt.

"Cranidos!"

Headbutt.

It was getting hard to watch by this point. In the distance, the Flygon waged an aerial war with Howard's Aerodactyl, leaving it open for Stormy's charging Hyper Beam.

Of course, Roze hadn't intended to be malicious with the 'Mr.', rather in the heat of the moment she'd likely forgotten she was dealing with a bona fide archaeologist, something she'd probably be embarrassed about doing at a later date if it ever got pointed out to her.[break][break]

Yet, any chance to even realise at this moment, let alone rectify had been blown away with the wind as Roze had witnessed the professional take a rock-sturdy skull to the gut, only to get right back up and get knocked right back down. If anything, Roze was surprised and a little impressed by his determination, but surely it wouldn't be good for his health if she didn't do something. A bit concerned, she'd tried to grab Howard and pull him aside before the almost comically clockwork headbutt had slammed right into him—the timing of the Cranidos getting a little too accurate.[break][break]

Back in the chaos of the fight, a brilliant bright burst of light had practically pierced through the sandstorm, Stormy's Hyper Beam blast shooting true as it hit the Flygon square with Shirley keeping it in place and distracted!

She pulled him aside just in time, likely stopping the fossil from cracking a few of the archaeologist's ribs like paper mache. For a professional brought out to gauge the situation, Howard's reaction to the Cranidos herd was less 'professional' and more 'clinically insane'. A superfan if there ever was one.

The sudden jolt from Roze caused Howard to rouse from his masochistic stupor. He blinked once, then twice, then shook his head.

"Wait, wait. Freeze! This is no time to be practicing tackling." The herd seemed to disagree, judging from the side-eye they were giving their two rescuers. Howard was getting sick of eating sand and clay each time he got tackled, so it was time to actually solve the problem. "It's been a while since I've done this. I believe the sound goes like..."

The Cranidos charged towards Howard and Roze, and the former let out a strangled shriek that sounded like an Altaria getting stuck in a paper shredder. It was a simply abhorrent sound, brought to live from the darkest reaches of Howard's prehistoric knowledge.

In other words, it was the cry of a Cranidos.

It stopped its charge and looked at them both. Slowly, the other Cranidos rose from their perches to surround them both.

"That was either a mating call or a declaration of war. I'm not sure which." Howard scratched his chin thoughtfully. "It's not an exact science, see."

She'd looked a little disheveled as she'd managed to pull the man away from his one way ticket to an emergency room, not exactly the type of girl who'd really grab onto and yank someone aside in such a manner, though she'd sighed in relief as he seemed to snap out of his love for the fossil pokémon and put his expertise to good use. She'd been sitting on the floor watching with an almost childish excitement, her eyes glued to the scene unfolding in front of her with far too much interest as he managed to Chris Pratt his way through the dinosaur situation.[break][break]

She'd even clapped as he'd managed to quell the herd, with a rather impressed "ooooh!" as she'd delighted in his expertise.[break][break]

"Wait, it's a what now?"[break][break]

Thankfully, before the conversation could devolve into its naturally miserable conclusion of explaining the Delibirds and the Combees, the Cranidos began to headbutt each other in a crude display of strength. The sound of skulls cracking together made Howard smile goofily, as if it wasn't an utterly brutal display.

"Good, they're competing for our affection. That means the mating call worked." Howard beamed at Roze as the Cranidos continued to clash and crowd around their saviors. It was good to know that one of his vague and useless skills was finally coming in handy.

And who said college was a scam?

"Let's use this chance while we still can." Howard whistled. "Let's get out of this canyon."

Despite her Dugtrio's worries, Roze had once again clapped with a smile of delight—nodding as she'd made sure to remember everything he'd said about Cranidos social habits—like a child watching a rather spectacular street performance as it seemed Howard had rizzed the Cranidos successfully and not doomed the two to getting trampled and pummeled to death. She'd relaxed a little, it seemed the situation was going decently, very much so impressed by his knowledge and his ability to keep his cool in such a dangerous situation*. She'd thought to herself that she'd have to learn how to make these cries for herself, rather genuinely happy to see in action something she'd never even read in any of the books she's studied back home.[break][break]

She'd made sure to catch the tail of the group to ensure every one makes it out as the archaeologist seemed ready to lead the Cranidos to safety.[break][break]

Soot had lingered for just a moment longer, still confused by the fact that nothing bad had happened from that lose-lose gamble, seeming to trigger some sort of tension-trap to disarm it when the group had left the area, the tunnels he'd made earlier seemed to collapse beneath where Roze and Howard had been, what was apparently meant to be a means of escape for the two had it come down to it.
