With war’s storm looming ever closer on the horizon, more and more Pokémon find themselves without a home. Among the volunteers helping them is Hoenn’s own fighting master. On paper, he coordinates the facility’s security and defenses, in the event of an attack by Rocket or Kyogre. In practice, given dahlia goode’s polite suggestion that he give his body time to recover, Navy is effectively just another volunteer. [break][break]
It’s good, satisfying work. So many of the Pokémon he tends to have sad eyes, betraying the stories that brought them here. Those same eyes light up with unconditional affection and happiness at the sight of treats. [break][break]
His task for the day isn’t a hard one. He walks with a cane, steeping coals in specialized rooms made for small fire Pokémon. Many of them like to lounge on the coals, or rest near open flames. Looking to his fellow volunteer, a Chimchar hanging from each shoulder and a Torchic pecking at a scar along his hairline, he smiles. [break][break]
“Looks like I’m under attack by some hungry Pokemon. You mind handing me some feed for ‘em, Sasha?” Between the way the baby Pokémon cling to him and his bad leg, walking across the room would be a precarious proposition.

Perhaps some people would have been awestruck and giddy to be in the presence of one of the Elite Four, but Sasha kept a level head as she swept a broom around the enclosure. At the sound of Mr. Navidson's voice, she raised her head, wiping sweat from her brow with a hand. [break][break]

The man did not seem formidable to her at all, not with the small Pokémon clinging to him. [break][break]

"Of course! I'll be right there." Setting down the broom, she walked over to a locked cabinet where staff stored food and snacks. Selecting two biscuits, she brought them over to the eager Pokémon, who immediately left Mr. Navidson alone to hop into Sasha's arms. [break][break]

She huffed a small laugh as the Chimchar and Torchic snatched the biscuits from her hands, then scampered off to enjoy them by a nearby pile of coals. "Gluttonous little things." [break][break]

A plaintive meow diverted her attention to the floor. Her Litten wove between her ankles, looking for a snack of his own.

“My hero.” He speaks the words with a playful edge that makes him feel human, rather than some larger than life idol. The babies retreat to their corner, eating and lounging on coals like lords of antiquity. His eyes fall on the Litten, which doesn’t seem to be one of HOME’s rescues.[break][break]
“That’s a cute little fella you’ve got there with you.” With his arms finally free, Navy is free to rife through his satchel. He makes a foolish error, pulling out a berry. Though the Chimchars resting on the coals take no immediate action, their eyes come to life hatching a plan to get at the berries. Kneeling down, Navy keeps the weight off his bad leg as he offers a Liechi berry to the Litten.[break][break]
“They got a name? My mom had a Litten I named Mitten, back when I was a kid.” A story, he thinks after speaking the words, that he hasn’t had much occasion to voice in modern Hoenn. He sees far more Incineroars than he does Littens.

With her hands now free, Sasha picked up Litten, who immediately started sniffing her clothes as if she had secret biscuits stashed inside. "Thanks," she said to Mr. Navidson. [break][break]

At his innocuous question, a blush colored her ears and cheeks. She knew he did not mean it, but the inquiry reminded her of her differences in habits. Hugging Litten to her chest, she admitted, "He doesn't have a name. I don't have a habit of naming my Pokémon. But none of them seem to mind, either." [break][break]

As if to emphasize her statement, Litten meowed and rubbed his head against Sasha's cheek.

“What,” he asks, smile full of mischief, “no Kahuna the Kakuna? Bacon the Bagon? Jerry the Clefairy?” At least one of the Torchics laugh, roosting on its coals. Still, Pokemon love the sound of their own names. For most, it’s the only word they can say.[break][break]
“Litten’s just fine, t-” He feels a hand trying to paw at the skin just under his satchel. “Hey!” The stern word sends a Chimchar jumping, giggling, back onto the coals. “…Charmy the Chimchar.” He says it with the air of a man who thinks he should write that down.

As Mr. Navidson shared each uninspired name, one after the other, Sasha's embarrassed expression slowly transformed into mild confusion. She glances uncertainly at the giggling Chimchar before offering her associate an awkward smile. [break][break]

"So, do you volunteer here often, Mr. Navidson?" she asked as she lowered Litten to the ground and searched for her broom. A thin layer of ash still covered half the floor, swirling about their ankles when kicked up by the young Pokémon. [break][break]

As she moved, Sasha's eyes flickered briefly to the Elite Four's cane before focusing on her task at hand.

“It’s a new thing.” He says, his tone uncomfortable more than awkward. Some part of him wonders if Sasha is the sort to read the papers or pay attention to the 24/7 cycle of bad news on television. There’s plenty said about him on there, especially with the way ramping up. [break][break]
“Usually my help’s a little more…active.” A tiny bit of strain accompanies the last word, timed with him lifting a bag of fresh coal for the pit. His cabal of fire monkeys and chicks appreciate the effort, rolling over the fresh fuel. [break][break]
“But, orders are orders. How ‘bout you, Sasha? …it’s alright to call you that, yeah? Admirable way to kill time, helping out around here.”

Sasha hummed in soft reply to Mr. Navidson's roundabout explanation for his usual work. She kept her focus on the sweeping, her expression neither judgmental nor revealing of inner thoughts. For all he knew, she was oblivious to the news about him. [break][break]

(She wasn't.) [break][break]

"Sasha's just fine," she replied, glancing up and offering a small smile. "I like being around Pokémon. Sometimes they're a handful, but they want love and affection like anyone else." [break][break]

The Torchic from earlier hopped over to peck at Sasha's shoes. She gently shooed it away with a nudge of the broom. [break][break]

"And you have to be especially careful with the ones who are injured or traumatized. One wrong move can set them off, even if you never intended it. You have to think to yourself: instead of forcing my expectations upon it, how can I meet it where it's willing to meet me?" [break][break]

The woman glanced over her shoulder at her companion. "It really makes you stop to think, and sometimes that's exactly what I need when I'm busy with work or other life stress. To slow down, stop, think."

“Hmm.” He says, nodding along at her words. Navy learned young to be a good listener. In the world he was born into, listening was what kept pain away. Growing up, it translates into a capacity to shut up as much as he talks. Some who know him well might doubt he has the capacity to keep his mouth shut that long, but he never interrupts Sasha, not ‘til she seems to pause.[break][break]
“They’re good for that. They demand a lot of attention from you to take care of ‘em.” One of the Torchic rises from the coal, chirping up expectantly at the sheriff. He knows what it wants – nothing major, just a rub on the head. The little one is hot from the coal, but not so hot that it burns.[break][break]
“They can’t hate, the way people do. Not even something big and dangerous like my Garchomp. Oh, they get mad, but that’s different from the way folk treat each other sometimes. It’s not complicated.” And Arceus knows his life is complicated, with the delicate balance of spinning plates on top of very thin sticks all around him. One wrong move, someone dies, gets arrested, or worse.[break][break]
“Just respect them and they respect you, you know?”

Sasha tilted her head at Mr. Navidson. On the surface, his words suggested a love for Pokémon drawn from a similar vein as hers had. But when she dug deeper, she found a peculiar desire to escape into their world. [break][break]

Not to become like them, as some online subcultures seemed to want, but a yearning for a time that no longer existed. Perhaps it never had, for him. [break][break]

"Do you wish for an uncomplicated life?" Sasha asked lightly, as she finished clearing the floor of ash. Even as she asked such a personal question, she closed up her heart, holding the man at a metaphorical arm's length. [break][break]

Habit, she thought. Her mother's voice murmured in the back of her mind: Observe and unveil, but never reveal.

He dwells upon that word like a moth around light. It is a peculiar choice, just as it is an apt choice. Not quiet, for his father named him well, though he denies that name. Michael is a warrior’s name. Warriors do not live quiet lives.[break][break]
Not simple. Simplicity implies dullness, which would pull apart his mind, one thread at a time. Simplicity implies repetition, and repetition is hell or the path towards its gates.[break][break]
The word calls to mind uncomplicated cases from another life; movie stars needing protection upon foreign shores, goods that needed running, and investigations into human matters like infidelity. He got to the bottom of things, swung when he needed to, and he got pain. He rarely heard stories that made his heart ache.[break][break]
“Sometimes.” He admits, in that vague half-acquiescence men who aren’t all that great at discussing feelings do. “War’s messy. Wish I was in Galar or Unova sometimes. No war there, just pros who fight ‘cause it’s fun, and people cheer ‘em on for it.” The last word rouses a huffed laugh, and a wry smile.[break][break]
“Though being a proper celebrity like a peace time E4 doesn’t sound fun.” Torchic chirps just loud enough to break the cadence of his words. “…sorry, don’t usually talk about myself like this much.”

Yes, Sasha wanted to say. But she had not lived through war; she'd left Kanto long before Team Rocket's coup. She had not gone to Johto like her parents had planned. [break][break]

And like any good civilian, when war came to Hoenn's soil in the form of extraterrestrial threats, she'd stayed in bunkers and prayed for a swift end to the violence. [break][break]

"Peace doesn't guarantee an uncomplicated life, either," was what she said instead, as she put away the broom and scooped up her Litten. She turned to Mr. Navidson. "My shift is over, so I'll be heading home." [break][break]

A pause. [break][break]

"I hope you find peace for yourself, whatever that ends up looking like." [break][break]

With a parting smile, Sasha excused herself and retreated from the room, leaving the man alone with his thoughts.
