When Ettie first saw , whilst exploring around in Dewford, he had struck her with a strange sense of familiarity. A feeling that she didn't get often, not from just anyone. She knew him, from a once-upon-a-time. A dream that felt more and more distant by the day, even if the marks it left behind would be everlasting.

At the time, she hadn't had the chance to talk to him... But it wasn't hard for her to figure out who he was - a Gym Leader, not unlike , who worked here in Dewford. Which meant that even if Ettie ended up not being able to interact with him out in the open...

... There was another way she could try to track him down, to meet him.

Which led to the now - a gym challenge having been made. Though it was hard to miss the child's pack following her up to the gym doors, she'd have most of the pack wait for her outside. She'd only bring in the ones that she had signed up with - the ones who were meant to fight. "Ettie come back soon!" She promised with a bright smile.

Thus, as Ettie stepped into the waiting room, her team would follow behind - surprisingly orderly, especially with Anne and Anat helping keep the more exciteable packmates under control. And the little wildchild would smile bright, waving an arm and giving a big "Hello!" to anyone and everyone present in greeting!

She was ready - both for the playfighting, and to meet a new-yet-not friend!

When he first heard reports of a child wandering Dewford with a pack of dog Pokemon at her heels, it brought to mind an old memory. For most of his peers from Galar, he imagines it would be a nagging feeling in the back of their minds, a sense of déjà vu. For Navy, it was anything but. Twenty years is a long time, and for him Hoenn sometimes seems more a dream than the twenty years he spent in that blighted land.[break][break]
There were a few theories he had on why, none of them very scientific. His soul had too much romance in it for hard science. The prevailing one is that his life in Galar was less monotonous than most of the others who lived through the dream. Starting a family, trekking across the land, braving new dangers every day, and Arceus knows what else left him with distinct memories of the place, not some blur of seeds planted in one location.[break][break]
So, when Ettie, who had grown in that dream into a woman he respected greatly for her bravery, placed a challenge in the waning days of his gym, the sheriff happily accepted. She finds him in the waiting room, legs kicked up on the desk and reading a magazine about proper vehicle maintenance. It’s a rare moment he allows himself to rest in the frenzy of activity that has been his April.[break][break]
“Ettie.” He says with a smile. “Glad you could make it. Sorry ‘bout making most of your pack wait outside.” The words that follow, given what waits for them down below, are laced with irony. “It can get pretty cramped in there. C’mon.”[break][break]
He leads them into the back, where a battle pitch lined with artificial grass awaits. There isn’t much room to breathe around the pitch, just four high steel walls. Navy takes up position at the far pitch, expecting his challenger to take the one closer to the door.[break][break]
“My deputies tell me you’ve been wandering around with your friends.” He says, before adding a note of severity. “Things are getting pretty dangerous in Hoenn…how d’you plan to keep ‘em safe?”

"Is okay. Pack patient!" Ettie chirped with a smile. She understood that buildings tended to be a bit cramped for her pack - Josh's gym being so large was the exception rather than the rule, she found. And all that being said, those like Maria, Haru, and Barbara could help keep the pack under control in her and Anne's absences.

Ettie followed after Navy with a bounce to her step, clearly excited for the playfight that they were about to have. It would certainly be different, from the race that she and had once upon a time!

But as they moved into place, Navy spoke - and Ettie listened. Indeed, things had been happening throughout Hoenn; she thought to the Toxic Chained pokemon that were cropping up around the place, and the Giant Chasm. But, she smiled gently in response; she had picked up on the seriousness, but she wasn't heavily worried. "Is okay." She spoke simply. "Pack protects pack. Is safe, in group."

There was safety in numbers, in cooperation with one's kin. As long as they were together, they'd be okay; just as it was for Navy's pack, just as it was for anyone elses' packs.

And that aside... Ettie grins wide, but it doesn't appear that it was a grin to smile, as she adds "And Ettie bites!" She was not afraid to square up, if need be - it was simply that she rarely ever saw the need to.

“The lone wolf dies,” he intones, old words from a forgotten life, “but the pack survives.” Strength in numbers, strength in unity. A house divided by itself cannot stand. The League, Navy thinks, would do well to remember that lesson in these times of strife. Navy cannot tell what the future will hold, and he can certainly make no guarantee that all of Ettie’s pack will survive what’s to come, but they will at least stand together.[break][break]
That’s more than he gave and Gabe, his pack mates. Never there for the ones who need him the most when they truly need the help. Unholstering a pokeball from his belt, he holds it up. A flash of red sends out Smaug, Navy’s Roaring Moon, onto the field. Smaug is a vicious thing, a true monster, a lone apex predator that has no need for a pack.[break][break]
The beast roars, waiting for Ettie’s packmate to challenge him. Its great feathered wings unfurl, hovering just above the ground in anticipation of a coming, vicious battle for control.[break][break]
“I’ll do everything I can to help you get stronger for what’s coming, Ettie. Only way we’re gonna survive what’s coming is to work together.”

The quote makes Ettie's expression flicker with recognition; and for a moment, it brings a thought to mind. "Ettie wonders... Zacian, Zamazenta... Is okay?" She murmurs, pondering, sympathy plain to see. It'd been a long while since she'd seen or heard any sign of them, after all - and even if they are legendary beasts...

... No wolf should be alone. They deserved a pack they could feel safe with, just as anyone else did.

Nonetheless, there were other things to worry about at the moment - such as the gym fight that was about to begin. The Roaring Moon was quite the sight; a predator like none other. It's clear the gears in Ettie's head are turning as she glances to Anat and Princess, wondering if the Lucario or Granbull would be up to the task...

... But, Ruffian is the one who acts, the ornery Stoutland baring his fangs as he charges forth with a gruff bark!

Anne and Anat both share a sigh at this, and Ettie blinks... But deciding to trust in him and roll with this, the wildchild nods and smiles. "Have fun, Ruffian!"

Oh, Ruffian would indeed enjoy this. This was a dragon? Looked more like an overblown bird to him! Working himself Up, Ruffian would bark out a couple of Intimidating taunts to Smaug - 'speaking' these very thoughts. He'd show it what-for!

Though Ettie might not speak dog, she certainly knew Ruffian enough to have an idea of what was going on - and she'd just giggle a little, musing in suggestion "Maybe not make dragon-friend angry?" She had a feeling Ruffian was going to eat his words, if he wasn't careful.

“I’unno, k-” He stops himself just shy of saying kid. It’s a lucky save, just before the first syllable rolls off his tongue all the way. It course corrects into “Ettie.” A small pause, as his eyes fall upon the dragon and dog full of bluster before one another. They seem to be in some sort of contest to establish dominance.[break][break]
Given the gravity of what Ettie asked, Navy finds little time to dwell on it, but it finds the notion that a mere Stoutland could rouse this sort of reaction from a dragon impressive. Filing that mental note away for later, he looks across the field, trying to reassure Ettie where the hero dogs are concerned.[break][break]
“They’re fine. They have to be, after the price we all paid. They’ll be back when it matters, when things look dark.” He remembers a legend he heard about that, about a crowned king returning to save the world. No street tough from Slateport would ever be part of such a legend, but he has faith that those wolves will do right by Hoenn.[break][break]
“I think…this is their region now, too.” His eyes fall upon a small carved statuette of Zacian, placed on the edge of his platform. Once upon a long, long time ago, his daughter carved it for him in admiration of the hero.[break][break]
“But we’ll talk ‘bout stuff like that when the fight’s over!” Smaug takes to the air in a macabre dragon dance, draconic energy gathering into himself. Pressed against the lights atop the high roof, he looks like a moon threatening to eclipse the sun.[break][break]
“I think they like each other.”

Ettie tilts her head a bit as Navy stops himself from calling her by 'kid', clearly wondering what he had been about to say. But, that question disappears from her mind as he continues to speak - taking comfort in his words. "... If Hoenn new-home... Then is welcome, Ettie thinks." She decides, nodding to herself a little.

Though, when Navy's gaze shifts, she follows it to the statuette - and lingers upon the sight for a few moments.

Her heart aches. Not so much for the reasons that it might make Navy's heart ache; but more for what it reminds her of. Of an avian crooning, a long and narrow beak preening through her hair in chilly mornings, and distinctive orange-black feathers; little things she can hold in her mind individually, and yet cannot bring together into a clear full image.

But rather than voice those feelings, she puts on a smile, one that she casts back to Navy. "Mhmm! We play-fight!" She agrees, eager to focus on something else. Trying to think of what she was missing only ever hurt; it'd be easier, if she just focused on the now, right? Everything was fine!

And Ruffian certainly was of the opinion that he had this handled - baring his teeth in what could be equal parts seen as a snarl, and a smug grin. Sure, Smaug's silohuette against the lights was an imposing sight - but he'd face it head on! Howling out a challenge for the dragon to bring it on, he'd ready a Play Rough; for what better way to face a dragon? He was prepared to tackle right into it very the second it got close enough, heedless of the potential danger!

Ettie, meanwhile, would happily whoop a bit, to cheer the Stoutland on - Graci and Zeit both joining the cheer with a few eager barks of their own! (Anne and Anat would watch more stoically... Whereas Princess seemed to have dozed off completely!)

“Play fight?” This part always made his heart sink. It is a terrible thing, to put a child through the ringer. His memory flashes back to his fallen brother, who was used to play fighting. Navy wonders again, not for the first or last time, what Gabriel Navidson thought as he died.[break][break]
“No. You’ve got to fight me for real. Rocket doesn’t play fight.” With a press of a button, he throws off the rhythm of the match. Cold, sterile walls give way to a cold, sterile elevator shaft. Something unlatches, and their platform begins its steady descent into the arena below. Smaug rushes forward, meeting the rough play with a breaking swipe. Flicking his wings out, the great dragon pulls up with all of his force, all the while the platform descends.[break][break]
Smaug roars down at the dog, circling while the platform descends.[break][break]
“Expect the unexpected, and understand Rocket ain’t gonna play fair if they catch your pack out in the open.”[break][break]
Steel gives way to open air. They descend towards a waste land of granite, a battlefield that might seem more a playground to those of a certain nature. Flying up, a Salamence bathes the center of the platform in flames. Smaug kicks off into the open air around them, their pitch descending towards its destination below.

Hound and dragon clash ferociously, trading blows. As the Breaking Swipe strikes Ruffian, he stumbles a hair - but remains standing strong and stalwart. He responds to Smaug's roar with a snarl, teeth on full display!

But, as the platform begins to shift downwards, and as Navy emphasizes the true point of these gym challenges, something shifts in Ettie's expression. Already having been a hint off-kilter emotionally from the prior subject, there's a flicker of surprise and uncertainty as he tells her to fight him for real.

A real fight isn't this, though, is it? A real fight is bloodier. It is of sinking one's teeth into the target's flesh and digging your claws in even if you yourself are not a pokemon. Of the pumping of adrenaline and the taste of blood on your tongue, one creature against another, a clash not only of strength but also the desire to survive-...

... What she thinks of when he asks for a real fight, Ettie isn't sure he'd want. But there isn't much chance to consider it, before Ettie realizes another dragon has joined the fight. A Salamence, circling above and bathing the battlefield in fire! She has to make a split-second decision, in this moment - and she glances to one of her packmates. "Zeit!"

And at her call, the Arcanine understands. He charges forth, his large size - even by Arcanine standards - allowing for him to easily stand over Ruffian, and cover the Stoutland with his body! Though the flames that wash over him sting, the damage is far less than it would have against Ruffian - and he barely flinches at it.

Ruffian, of course, is one to claim he has it handled in a disgruntled 'rrrruff!' towards Zeit - regardless of whether he actually did. But he does not squander the opportunity that his packmate offers. Getting out from underneath Zeit once the flames have cleared, he is ready to Work Up once more, in preparation for the next clash as Smaug descends upon them!

And Zeit, meanwhile, is ready to retalite. With a thundering and low baying, he lets loose a Rock Slide - raining stone down upon the dragons, in an attempt to force them out of the sky!
TLDR: Hisuian Arcanine joins the fight, covers Stoutland from the Flamethrower and retaliates against both dragons with Rock Slide. Stoutland, meanwhile, Works Up in preparation for the next clash.

Too many kids complain when they realize it ain’t fair. Too used to everything going exactly like they’re told it will. Ettie’s adapting. Not even batting an eye. Just sending out another of their pack.[break][break]
There’s the makings of a fantastic trainer in there, between how much the wolf child cares for her Pokemon and the obvious signs of training. Natural instinct and understanding of how to utilize their Pokemon minimizes the damage done. Few creatures can stand up to dragonfire, but the ancient Arcanine of Hisui is one such being.[break][break]
The two dragons take to the sky, both indignant that their foes remain standing. Both have grown used to Pokemon dying from one good attack. Navy smiles, happy that they’re having to work for any hypothetical supper.[break][break]
“Better not stay up there, boys. These dogs mean business.” The rain of granite on their heads forces them both into a mad, breakneck dive. They struggle to stay one step ahead of the rock slide. Once again, Navy says a quiet prayer to Arceus over his AQUA contract. He worked a clause about repairing damage done to his gym in there, all under the guise of combat readiness.[break][break]
Those construction workers are going to get their due, with how granite is raining down on his dragons. Both have sighted their chosen prey: Zeit, who would try and bring them down to the level of mere canines. Nameless lunges straight ahead, psychic energy gathering around his head. The mystics call this technique zen headbutt. Smaug, not to be outdone, tries to smash the Arcanine with an iron head.[break][break]
Both, Navy thinks, have made a fatal flaw: they have ignored the Stoutland, who’s all worked up and ready to fight.

It is a thundering crash as the granite of the Rock Slide slams down, making the ground shudder under Ettie's feet. She sways a tiny bit, but stays upright - eyes sharp as she watches Nameless and Smaug both zero in on their supposed prey.

The dragons dive, and the hounds are ready.

Ruffian is plenty ready to try and get a cheap shot on Smaug with a Play Rough - snarling for the dragon to not forget who his real opponent is! Perhaps with a good enough hit, it'd interrupt the incoming Iron Head; not that it was the Stoutland's intention. All he cares about is proving himself, so that he can rub it in the haughty reptile's face!

Meanwhile, Zeit briefly shakes himself out, before getting a running start to meet Nameless in the middle, as the dragon swoops at him! Electricity dances across his hide, the only warning the Salamence would get before he lights up in a brilliant display, letting loose a fearless Wild Charge!

(For how reckless the attack seems though, his Rock Head is sure to protect him.)
TLDR: Stoutland attempts to cheap shot Roaring Moon while he's distracted with a Play Rough (and potentially unintentionally interfere with the Iron Head.) Arcanine clashes Salamence's Zen Headbutt with a Wild Charge, protected from recoil by Rock Head.

“Good.” This time the word is spoken out loud, with an educator’s eye. Ettie assists him in a most trying task – humbling dragons, and showing the power of her pack while she does so. Smaug and Nameless are, unsurprisingly, caught off guard. Though Smaug is more tested, having been his mount of choice in the battle for Regice last fall, he still lacks the true grit of Vortigern or Arthur.[break][break]
Like so many, he coasted by on easy prey, on creatures who break at the first sign of trouble. When an iron head meets his charge, he cries out, momentarily confused, recoiling but soon redoubling his efforts to strike. Navy’s Nameless Salamence feels its frail bones fry from the inside out as the wild charge advances upon him.[break][break]
He cries, and tries to fly into the air.[break][break]
Things are looking bad. Best to apply a little more pressure, see if Ettie holds up to a second round of cheating. He raises his finger to his lips, and he whistles.[break][break]
“Grendel. Spin.”[break][break]
Grendel was something of a local legend in the seas around Dewford. Navy remembers his father speaking of a Dragonite that guided sailors across the waves. It is one of the few good memories he has of the man. Grendel arrives in a rush of jetstream and cool air. His ice spinner disrupts the battlefield, buys the flock of dragons a moment of time.[break][break]
It is not the only trick Navy has to play. He holds up a tera orb, which resounds across the battlefield with a shard embedded in Smaug’s finger. His Roaring Moon dons a crown of earthen glory. He peers into the vastness of infinite possibility and grasps a world where he has no need for wings. His terrible weight slams upon the ground, creating an earthquake that forces Navy to grip the safety bars of his platform like they might die.[break][break]
“Hold onto something!” He warns Ettie, just as Nameless, emboldened, flies into Ruffian in a double-edged attack, promising to hurt him just as much as his foe.

Both clowns are hit. Navy throws out Dragonite, who uses Ice Spinner to disrupt the battle. Roaring Moon is now tera ground and uses earthquake. Salamence uses double edge and is not long for this world fight.

As yet a third dragon joins the fight, Zeit and Ruffian both are forced back by the Ice Spinner to avoid the chill of the dragon's sweeping strike.

However, this does not save them from the Earthquake that follows - the earth shaking, cracking, spearing upwards from the resultant shockwave; both canines yelp as they're tossed about from the great tremor! Ettie ends up clinging fast to the guardrail and Anat both, who is able to remain mostly upright despite it all.

Zeit staggers as he rises back to his feet, clearly a bit more worse for wear than Ruffian is, even if the Stoutland is visibly hurting as well...

... But, that doesn't stop the reckless Ruffian from meeting Nameless' charge, eager to Take Down this mighty dragon!

But, perhaps it was prime time for additional helping hands. Ettie was catching on quick, that Navy was continuing to add more pokemon to the fight, even though it started as a simple one on one. This was breaking the norms she understood of these more 'formal' playfights.

She tests the waters. "Princess. Graci."

Princess yawns widely, as she steps forth onto the battlefield - but the otherwise lazy canine has an Intimidate-ing countenance about her as she steps forth.

Alongside her, Graci flits about - the Sky Forme Shaymin already seeing where they can help! That big mean feathery dragon was hurting everyone - clearly, if they worked together, they could stop him! Diving low with a Serene Grace, she'd let loose a burst of verdant energy, peppering Smaug with a fly-by Seed Flare!

And Princess, seeing the opportunity, would charge to bite down on the Roaring Moon with a frosty Ice Fang.

Zeit, seeing an opportunity to tend to himself, would take a step back- basking in the Morning Sun to try and tend to himself before he joined back in the fray.
TLDR: Both Stoutland and Arcanine are hurting. Stoutland recklessly meets Salamence's Double-Edge with a Take Down. Sky-Forme Shaymin and Granbull join the battle (activating Granbull's Intimidate), as Ettie tests the waters. Shaymin and Granbull double-team Smaug with Serene Grace-enhanced Seed Flare and Ice Fang respectively. Arcanine takes a step back to recover with Morning Sun.

Each of the dragons understands, on some instinctive level, that they sit in the presence of a dragonslayer when Princess takes to the field. Their resolve shakes, as it so often does when young teething dragons encounter fairy types for the first time. Navy can’t help but smile, a stray thought of his Garchomps first dealing with a moonblast playing across his mind.[break][break]
There’s enough to deal with at present.[break][break]
“Grendel, cheer ‘em on.” Navy commands. His Dragonite soars up, draconic energy welling within him as he unleashes a mighty yell of dragon cheer that flashes across the battlefield. Both of his friends, down on the field below, are boosted.[break][break]
And not just him. Perched on a rock farther up the vast field, a sniper sits, perched low, long blue snout pointed towards the battle. Leviathan is one of Navy’s bona fide gym Pokemon. He’s a favorite of Navy’s for these sorts of engagements, as well as his water combat specialist.[break][break]
Leviathan’s hydro pump seems less a pump and more a precise, devilishly sharp blast of water across a vast distance, aimed right at Zeit. The Arcanine’s moment of rest beneath a morning sun might well prove his salvation in the match.[break][break]
Smaug is surrounded, and he senses the end is near. Only good cheer keeps him up. Though Zeit’s morning sun is no true gout of ancient sunlight, it kindles his innate protosynthesis, if for but a moment. Dragons do not, as a rule, go gently into the night. Rage is their right, and so he rages unto his last, one final earthquake as he throes unconscious upon the ground.[break][break]
The earth shakes, and first blood goes to Ettie. Nameless wobbles where he floats, shaking from exertion and from the effort. Even if he is but a Nameless dragon, he is still a dragon. Neither will he go gently. He opens his mouth, and he does what all dragons do.[break]
As the earth shakes beneath him, he unleashes a flamethrower upon Ruffian.

The earth rumbles and tremors, but Princess snarls as she keeps her fangs sunk into Smaug; hanging on tight and letting the frost take hold, until the great dragon goes unconscious.

Above, Graci is spared the chaos - and as Princess lets go of Smaug to straighten up, she drifts low to alight on the Granbull's shoulders. That was one down - but there were still foes aplenty to worry about.

For example, there was that of Leviathan. The Kingdra's Hydro Pump shot across the battlefield, slamming into Zeit's shoulder. He yelps audibly, falling over from the force of the strike with a THUD - though the prior Morning Sun has saved him from a complete KO. That wasn't to say he was in good shape, however, given his swaying as he pushed himself back up to his feet.

Ruffian, meanwhile, was having a bad time of his own. The Stoutland's strategy boiled down to recklessly charging headfirst; something that was difficult to follow through on, the second your opponent fell back to attack from range. As Nameless disengages, Ruffian attempts to chase, but it's a mistake - as he is but met with dragonfire.

And with all the damage accumulated from his reckless style, it doesn't take much before he collapses, unable to keep fighting.

Ettie takes a second to dig a pokeball out of her bag, to recall him and let him rest. Though she doesn't use them often, it's moments like this where the little capsules are useful to her.

But more on her mind, is the fight at hand - and what comes next. She glances to Anat. She glances to Anne. There is a quiet consensus found amongst the three - and Ettie nods. "Go."

Anat moves first, and she is quick to go to Zeit's side. Her paws glow with a Heal Pulse to ease the Arcanine's wounds, quickly bringing him back to fighting condition.

Anne, however, follows after - and as the packleader, she is quick to coordinate her pack, bringing them together as she throws back her head in an echoing howl!
Call of the Pack
the user lets out a rallying cry in the form of a powerful howl, empowering nearby pokemon, and clearing negative effects such as taunt, sleep, confusion, or infatuation.
At their leader's call, the pack perks up one by one - and emboldened, they are ready to quickly get to work.

Graci leads the way, the winds bending to her beck and call as she takes flight with a Tailwind - helping her pack along. And spotting Leviathan as she ascended, the Shaymin would bark - drawing Princess' attention!

Using the speed offered by Tailwind, Princess would charge to close the distance between herself and the sniper - ready to use a Play Rough if she can get close enough!

Zeit, meanwhile, turned his focuses to the two winged foes before him. With a howl, he sent down another Rock Slide, looking to finish Nameless and force Grendel down!
TLDR: Granbull toughs it out through the Earthquake, Shaymin avoids by virtue of Flying. Stoutland is KO'd by Flamethrower, Arcanine is badly damaged by Hydro Pump but barely standing.

Lycanroc and Lucario join the fight - Lucario healing Arcanine with Heal Pulse and Lycanroc using the Z-Move Call of the Pack to empower her pack. Shaymin pitches in with a Tailwind and spots Kingdra, pointing him out to Granbull. Granbull charges in his direction (and if able to get close enough in time, uses Play Rough.) Finally, Arcanine uses Rock Slide to try and finish Salamence and strike Dragonite.
