Fallarbor held little value. The air quality was horrific, no festivals were ever held here, and the people coughed incessantly. Ameena had little interest in visiting, but its proximity to the volcano gave her an opportunity to find pokemon that otherwise were not easily discovered in Hoenn. The pokemon typically attracted to such an environment were hardy and sturdy. One had to be tough to survive the unforgiving volcano and volcano-adjacent terrain. Still, Ameena looked grim as she walked through the outskirts of town, hoping she and Gardevoir could scare up a good addition to her team.

Walking quietly, carefully along the outskirts of Fallarbor, Yuina kept close to Kano. She was trying to spend more time... out? Just out, venturing further and further from Mauville as she felt like she could, though not for too terribly long. She always inevitably felt that pang of fear, wondering if she was being watched, if the next time she opened her eyes she would be staring out from the dimmed visor of that mask, or worse... staring into the eyes of that woman...[break][break]
Kano huffed, leaning into her figure, sniffing with heavy breaths at the top of her head, and Yuina did smile at least. Her Pokemon were okay, even after being trapped for as long as they were... She'd missed Kano dearly. Yuina never would have forgiven herself if something happened to him, and she was powerless to stop it.

Ameena's head perked as she turned a corner and saw the unusual Arcanine, but just as soon as the optimism hit, she realized it was cuddling up to someone clearly its trainer. [break][break]

Wait. Was the girl familiar?[break][break]

Last time she was in the area, a soot storm had made it hard to see at all. Now, that she had a clearer look, it did seem the pokemon had the exact same coloring and pattern as the one on the mountain, and the girl seemed to be the right height. [break][break]

"You caught it after all," she said with displeasure. Gardevoir tucked close to Ameena, though with their telepathy, such proximity wasn't necessary for determining when to step in and protect.

The crushing feeling in her chest was starting to over take her, slowly but surely, Yuina was certain she wouldn't be able to spend too much more time out for the day... The fear, the paranoia, forcing her to go back and hide again and hope for another day that she might be able to venture just that little bit further, for just a little bit longer...[break][break]
Kano was the first to eye the woman, seeing her before she spoke, she had been covered on the mountain top, but the canine's keen senses locked in, and he bristled. A low growl came from his maw, Yuina's panic began to rise exponentially, were they being hunted? But her glazed amber eyes looked out to the voice that regarded her... And her Arcanine...[break][break]
"I-I told you, I was already his trainer... I wasn't lying, I-," Yuina returned, she remembered the encounter well, stepping into Kano's figure, but the more she looked at the woman... The striking flash of vibrant pink hair when the masks came off in her ward... Shouts, a child's scream...[break][break]
"You... you were on that ship too," Yuina spoke, weary, she was the one trying to kidnap the child, and Yuina's breath caught in her throat, clutching into Kano's fur, remembering the visceral feeling of time looping...

Ameena tsk'd at the young woman's insistence. "Yet you blocked my pokeball. So I have no way of knowing if that were true or not." She was unfamiliar with Arcanine behavior, so it was unclear if it could've bonded to her as much as they clearly were in the short time since Ameena first saw the Hisuian pokemon. [break][break]

Regardless. Ameena felt a chill run down her spine as she acknowledged the Penitentiary. Her eyes widened, but as her mouth opened, nothing but a choked sound came out. She didn't know how to address it, how to dissuade her from believing Ameena was actually there. Her own defense for her actions being the toxicity were solid; and, in favor of the truth, she really had wanted to save the Megalopolan child from the fate of the ship's destruction which she had been so certain was imminent. [break][break]

That she had also intended to experiment on the child was irrelevant. [break][break]

Ameena grabbed at her head, but even as she scrambled to think of a retort, Gardevoir sensed her distress and acted, launching psychic at the woman and her Arcanine.

For better or for worse, Yuina's memories of the ship were vivid, virulent, she couldn't forget any details yet no matter how much she wanted to. The woman may have tried to contest that she was in fact there, but Yuina was seeing her so clearly now, every time they were set out into their ward to do their labor for the day, her pink hair, watching her run off with the child...[break][break]
Instead though, Yuina could see that the mention was jarring, she didn't care for recalling the experience either, but the Gardevoir unleashed a wave of psychic energy well before Yuina could say anything else.[break]
Kano snarled and pushed Yuina to the side, and as she was clung to his fur his momentum took them out of the way of the psychic blast, but only just.[break][break]
"Stop! Just let us go and leave Kano alone!"

Ever since receiving a mega stone, Gardevoir had become far more reactive. She was almost too protective of Ameena and far too ready to lay down fire to support her, but Gardevoir wasn't as familiar with the game being played. Ameena had a reputation to protect. She couldn't... she couldn't make public enemies, not yet. [break][break]

But the damage was done. Ameena would never earn this woman's trust, and what was one Leaguer? [break][break]

"So passive," Ameena criticized as she straightened back up, feeling emboldened by the encouragement Gardevoir was sending through their telepathic connection. Gardevoir wanted the fight, and Ameena found herself less persuaded by the rationale to avoid it. "Do you ever fight for something? For yourself, even? Do you always rely on the sympathy of others for survival?" Was that her speaking or Gardevoir? The two of them felt like one as Gardevoir mega evolved. [break][break]

Mega Gardevoir launched mystical fire at Yuina and Kano, and Ameena found herself laughing at the sight instead.

Clung to Kano's yellow fur, Yuina looked out to the woman that didn't relent, and didn't show any signs of letting them go... And for what? Did she truly intend to take Kano away from her? Was she after something else? What was the point of all of this, if not more nonsense violence just for the sake of it?[break][break]
The woman criticized her, in almost the same tone an adult would tut at a child... And Yuina bristled at her words. Fighting for something? If only she knew... Yuina fought every day for what she had now, and could only continue to do so unless the threat of her future take it all away...[break][break]
Yuina urged Kano forward as the Gardevoir unleashed a blaze of Mystical Fire, and the canine snarled with smoke billowing from his jowls. The Arcanine took his stance and began to rush forward, head first and head on towards and through the Mysical Fire as he bore on with the ferocity of a Head Smash, threatening to trample anything in his path.[break][break]
"What do you want from me? What is this for? If I'm so inconsequential to you, what are you fighting for?"

The mega evolved Gardevoir held her hands out to try and mitigate the damage of the head smash, getting pushed back several yards from the Arcanine's power. She opened her mouth to assault him with an alluring voice at their proximity. She wanted to watch the Arcanine take damage up close, wanted to feed into the sadistic urge to take him apart. [break][break]

Ameena shook her head. The kid just didn't get it. "I wanted that pup, but now I see that it is weak because of its codependence on you. Your weakness feeds into it. Your lack of conviction, of principle," she reached forward to tangle a hand in Yuina's hair, "It sickens me. You have tools of war and choose to plead for your safety instead. How pathetic."

Rushing forward with the entirety of his force behind him, Kano made contact with the Gardevoir and pushed it well away from Yuina and her adversary, leaving Yuina exposed. At the close proximity, Kano yowled and glowered at the shrieking alluring voice, smoke streaming from his jowls as he tried to cover his ears with his paws, digging his maw into the ground.[break]
Even Yuina had to try and cover her ears from the assaulting sound, but moreso to drown out the woman's degrading criticisms of her. Her weakness, making Kano weak in return, she wouldn't relent, and encroached upon Yuina in the moment that she tried to cover her ears... Yuina shrieked at a hand clutching tightly into her hair, forced now to listen to her words. And just as quickly as the fear was setting in, so was the seething anger, the way she spoke down to her, the way she regarded her as nothing, it infuriated her, just like him...[break][break]
Her rage, her hate at the thought of him, how permeating the potent emotions were reached out to an energy that she harbored with her, one of the Pokeballs at her belt shuttered almost violently. The orb burst into a spray of black ice, the temperature fluctuating for that moment as a haze lofted around the two women.[break][break]
As if to give a living, breathing testament to how much Yuina truly fought for, how much anger she held, how much fight she was capable of, the darkened canine towered over them, huffing with sharp eyes and fangs dripping with black, icy shadow.[break]
Yuina didn't have to see Ryu to know he had emerged, a manifestation of everything she was feeling as her hands reached up to clutch that of the woman's that held her hair.[break]
"Let me go. Now."

The young woman's reaction to Ameena's grasp was underwhelming, and Ameena tsk'd. "Do it," she said without breaking eye contact with Yuina. However, she was speaking to Gardevoir, propelled by the hateful feedback loop connecting them. Gardevoir teleported hundreds of feet in the air above them along with the Arcanine that had pushed her - their contact remaining above and both of them slowly starting to fall to the ground, though only one of them would naturally be safe. [break][break]

"Look," Ameena cooed, tilting to her hand to encourage her to look up and see her descending Arcanine. The other Arcanine she summoned was doused in shadow, naturally menacing, and finally, finally interesting. Perhaps, the little Leaguer had more potential than Ameena had initially assessed. Still, she did acquiesce and remove her hand from Yuina's hair. "And what will your little doggy do about that?" Would the woman plead for Ameena to protect her rapidly-falling Arcanine? Would she use the shadow one to torture Ameena into teleporting the Arcanine back to the ground?

In that quick moment, Yuina didn't care that Ryu was feeding off of her emotions, fueled from her hate and her rage... She knew she could never truly control the shadow, but watching the Gardevoir take Kano up and away from her, she didn't care.[break]
Where the woman did remove her hand from Yuina's hair, perhaps at the behest of the dripping maw of the shadow that eyed her, she thought so little of Yuina it was likely not at her own request. But now she was faced with Kano's life running out of time right before her eyes... The panic began to set in.[break][break]
Unprompted, but encouraged by Yuina's growing hate, the shadow snarled and unleashed the burning cold of Shadow Chill between the woman and Yuina. Haze and shadow filled the area, Yuina didn't care that she could feel ice clinging to her skin, she was trying to think as quickly as she could for Kano's sake... Knowing that she had put him in danger...[break][break]
She felt a shift around her, already an intimately familiar feeling that she came to know while on that ship... The Celebi that still chose to watch her appeared. Ameena wanted to reach for the knife at her belt, but she wanted to give the little one an opportunity to offer something in this fight. Her shadow hound's chill was visibly powerful, but Ameena found herself numbed to the sensation. Then, a flash of familiar green appeared - the thing from the Penitentiary? - but it was gone as soon as it had shown itself. [break][break]

Gardevoir's mega evolution wore out. Ameena felt the chill all at once, her breath punched out of her lungs. It wasn't too different from dunking your head in a bucket of ice water. She gasped and doubled over, trying for her breath. Meanwhile, Gardevoir teleported back down and stood between Ameena and the shadow Arcanine. Her bloodlust was visible as she began to charge a psychic attack, but Ameena gripped the pokemon's wrist, still unable to straighten up. [break][break]

"N-n-no," she made out through chattering teeth. She felt drained, like her body was a husk that she was barely subsiding in. Her head hurt like hell, and the last three minutes of her life were a jumbled mess. Had she just grabbed the trainer by the hair in public? She hadn't been that upset... [break][break]

Nervousness shot through her telepathic bond with Gardevoir, and the psychic glared Yuina down as it teleported the duo far away.
