He should have known better than to step outside without company.[break][break]

Aris has no particular likes or dislikes towards Pokemon. The ones he keeps for himself are, of course, at the top of his list, but those not belonging to him are as good as non-existent.[break][break]

However, he does have one Pokemon at the very bottom of his list, and that's a pidove.[break][break]

They're treacherous creatures, worse than rats, roaming the sky and existing solely to torture the man whenever he steps foot outside of a building. For whatever unfathomable reason, Aris seems to be a natural target for these birds.[break][break]

Today, he had left the club for a short trip to the supermarket, and as soon as he had finished his transaction and exited the establishment, a swarm of pidoves had taken it upon themselves to attack him. He deeply regrets not bringing any of his pokeballs along.[break][break]

Aris is currently taking shelter under the awning of a storefront. Every attempt at stepping out into the light is parried with a dive from one of the pidoves. He's effectively stuck.[break][break]

"Fucking pests," he snarls up at them, using an arm to cover his face and swipe at any that come nearby. They dare not damage his face. That's his moneymaker, for gods' sake.[break]

Another thing Josh was excited to do after being discharged from the hospital was getting back to taking Ranger tickets. Nothing strenuous like a wilderness rescue where he could mess up his arm again, but he could at least make small differences in the lives of Mauville's citizens. A ticket caught his attention, and an easy one at that; there was a flock of unruly Pidove swaeming a local supermarket and needed to be chased away.

It wouldn't be too much longer before Aris van der Veld would hear the sound of hooves clacking against the asphalt composing Mauville's skyway level: the only level fully exposed to the sun. Were he to glance in the sound's direction, he would see a striking, blue Rapidash galloping toward him, its rider wearing a blue Ranger uniform and awkwardly holding the fire-type's reins with one hand.

How long is he going to stay stuck here?[break][break]

Aris starts to think of possible escape plans or pushback. He glances at the shopping bag in his hand. None of the food items in there are something the pidoves would be interested in, and he doubts he can use some paper towels to shoo them away. He considers using Cato's precious paints as a distraction before a bright blue flash grabs his attention.[break][break]

The rapidash is easy to recognise, and the person sitting on top, albeit awkwardly, is even more so. A look of relief crosses Aris' face and he raises his free hand to wave the gym leader down.[break][break]

The supermarket, and their client in distress, was quite easy to find. It was a stark contrast from his normal tickets where the goal was to find the person lost in the wilds. This time around, it was much simpler.

The Champion reined his Shiny Rapidash to a stop, took his one hand off the reins, and reached down to offer Aris a handshake. "Elite Ranger Devlin or Champion Devlin, but you can call me Josh," the horseback Ranger introduced himself. "Strange that Pidove would be swarming a place like this. I wonder what's attracting them."

Before he went to investigate, Josh clicked open a Poké Ball, from it energing a saddled Meganium sounding a happy cry. "Medli will help hold them off while I figure out why they're being so aggressive." With that, Josh reined his mount away from Aris, Medli standing close. A sphere of REFLECT extended from her flower petals, deflecting many of the beak attacks and talon attacks away from the shopper.

All Aris can think about is how this is not the time for a handshake, but he returns it anyway because it seems like this guy is about to be his saviour. Better to get in his good books.[break][break]

"I'm Aris, and apparently I have a tendency to attract pidoves for some unthinkable reason. Thank you for coming to my rescue, Josh."[break][break]

Aris eyes the Magenium, Medli, as she protects him from the aggressive attacks of the flying pokemon. He scooches closer to her. "Honestly, I've never met a pidove who isn't aggressive. If you can figure out what about me angers them so much, I'd be grateful," he chuckles sheepishly.[break]

As the Pidove pounded away at Medli's REFLECT shield, Josh logged into RangerNet on his phone and looked up resources for handling Pidove. "Great to meet you, Aris!" He hummed for half a minute before finding a relevant article.

"Normally, Pidove are some of the most friendly bird Pokémon imaginable, but they're ravenous around food. It's unusual to see them this upset. Do you usually carry a lot of Berries on you?" Josh asked. Though they were normally happy-go-lucky, Pidove were known to get ravenous around food. Their small bodies did not lend well to being predators until they evolved, reducing them to the role of scavenger.

Aris glances down at his shopping bag. "No berries. I don't even have much food on me except for some chocolate and cheese. Would they even like those?"[break]
