Fern steps into the training facilities with far less fanfare than they normally might. In the wake of their time within the prison ship, their mood has remained somewhat somber - restless with anything that isn't a concentrated focus on preparation or pertains to their patron.[break][break]

A patron who, of course, drifts alongside them now - eager to expel some of their excess energy. But thankfully, that is what they're here for today.[break][break]

It seems they've arrived ahead of their company for today's rounds of training and preparation, so Fern settles in to one an open space. Pre-emptively, they release a skittering heliolisk that scrabbles across the floor with little, clicking claws. "You will not always be able to rely on my set up," they say simply when Tapu Koko looks over at the lizard with obvious distaste.[break][break]

Something they do not care for, but cannot ignore. If their forcible separation at the hands of the wardens informed them of anything, it is this.

Cillian, too, has been changed by the horrors of imprisonment. Dark bags beneath his eyes suggest little sleep, and he has locked himself in his office with his paperwork more often than not.[break][break]

But there is another change within him, too.[break][break]

As the underboss strides into the training room, MIASMA swirling around him, his shadow shifts out of sync with his movements. More noticeable are the shadows that have swallowed his arms elbow-deep, fingers twisting into terrible claws.[break][break]

"Ah, good." The echo in his voice is gentler, now. "You're already here."[break][break]

It's unusual for Cillian to train without his shadows, but today he releases an IRON CROWN from a luxury ball at his belt. He had little care for the futuristic Paradoxes, but a well-trained machine could only be a boon for Rocket.[break][break]

Besides, it would give Fern's patron something to target. Cillian's lip twitches as his gaze settles on TAPU KOKO.[break][break]

"Hello again."

the changes in the underboss do not go unnoticed by them - both subtle and obvious. fern watches his shadow shift and move discordantly with curious eyes.[break][break]
"punctuality is a virtue," they reply pleasantly enough, but fatigue still wears heavy in their voice. "are you well?" it's a polite ask, but they are still watching the shadowy flickers of the claws that sprawl from his hands in an umbral curl.[break][break]
the iron crown is a curious choice, but maybe not an unheard of one given tapu koko's specialties. their heliolisk scuttles to and fro across the mats - excitably so.[break][break]
the island spirit watches cillian before its head tilts. it bounces in the air, plumage waving as it swings its shielded arms in a dance of sorts. electricity crackles from its body.[break][break]
"it recognizes you," they say brightly, "and i think it's rather eager to see what you've brought it to play with."

It's asked with amusement, the lilt of Cillian's tone forcing some of the exhaustion from his voice. He hears that same weariness in Fern, empathizes in the way only a fellow prisoner could.[break][break]

It still haunts his dreams. Does it haunt theirs, too?[break][break]

"As well as can be expected."[break][break]

His body still recovers from wounds and work. His mind will be slower in returning to normal. But he is free. That is what matters most. He is free.[break][break]

He smirks at Tapu Koko, recognizing a kindred spirit in its excitement for battle.[break][break]

"Plenty of toys in the box if you break this one," he says to the spirit directly, his laughter echoing gently in the space. "Go wild."[break][break]

He clicks his tongue, and the Iron Crown snorts, LEERING at its opponent as it paws the ground.

Despite their comment, Fern’s face scrunched up and then they laughed. “No, not particularly,” they trilled in response, their own lightness masking their true weariness. The soul deep sort that they’d rather no one but themself glimpse.[break][break]
Piety seemed a futile endeavor among the likes of them. And beyond that, piety was boring.[break][break]
They nodded, understanding. “How dutifully we all cope with these experiences,” they remarked dryly. They shook their head. Just like durants, the lot of them. Marching back to work in the wake of something devastating.[break][break]
Perhaps because it was the only thing to do.[break][break]
“You heard him, Pigeon. Have at it.” They grinned, watching as Tapu Koko launched higher into the air, pleased with the revelation. The heliolisk knew enough to respond to the click of Fern’s tongue—an ELECTRIC TERRAIN zinging to life along the ground.
But Tapu Koko’s eyes had narrowed on the Iron Crown’s LEERING gaze. Lulled, it refrained from attack, and instead darted from end to end of the room. A blur of increasing AGILITY—taunting the metal beast into attempting to catch it.

"Pidgeon!" Cillian echoes, both appalled and delighted. "I think Lugia might eat me if I called her that."[break][break]

But Tapu Koko seems to be as cunning as its chosen, and no bond between legend and vessel was the same. It fascinated Cillian as much as it baffled him.[break][break]

He's glad, though, that Fern's bond with the Tapu seemed far less volatile than many of late.[break][break]

Tapu Koko zips about the field, too fast for Cillian's eyes to focus on as it enjoys the boost from an ELECTRIC TERRAIN. Iron Crown is similarly empowered, though the spike to its SPECIAL ATTACK would only aid in a retreat. It does not retreat. It tosses its head and falls for the island spirit's taunting, charging forward across ground that crackles with electricity.[break][break]

A click of Cillian's tongue cannot tame it; this one was not trained so well as his shadows. It lowers its horns like a pair of SACRED SWORDS seeking purchase.[break][break]

"These Paradoxes are strong, but they're a nightmare to control."

“I think I simply had the luck of the draw on that,” they remarked, an amused scoff following as their eyes followed the darting pace of Tapu Koko. “It is rather playful and tricky—which seems to make it a bit more receptive to nicknames.”[break][break]
A brow rose, though, as they grinned. “Perhaps you should try, and see what she does.” Always worth seeing what happens, no?[break][break]
In all honesty, they were rather glad that time and experience hadn’t warped the bond between patron and avatar. They had grown rather fond of Tapu Koko—something they hadn’t fully expected to happen when they first agreed to its blessing.[break][break]
And it was something like pride that took over their expression as they watched the little imp grow quicker and more difficult to catch. It spun through the air, careful to dart away from the Iron Crown as it attempted to track its movements.[break][break]
When the slash of its SACRED SWORD swung down, one of its shield arms came up to meet the blow. And with the other pincer, it fired a charged ELECTRO BALL at the mechanical beast.[break][break]
“I suppose that can have its drawbacks, as much as its benefits,” they mused. “I do not have much experience with the mechanical paradoxes, admittedly. But my Roaring Moon can be rather stubborn when she sets to it.”

"I suppose so," Cillian concedes, watching the 'pidgeon' dart about with amused interest. "Lugia can be tricky when she wants to be, but she's never been playful."[break][break]

The closest he can think of is her reserved delight at repeatedly knocking him flat during their training sessions, but it was not the sort of jovial playfulness that would invite friendly nicknames.[break][break]

"Mm, I'd rather keep my powers and my head."[break][break]

He doesn't think she'd actually hurt him, likely just glare him into submission, but he tries not to anger the Guardian where he can avoid it. Her anger was a terrible thing.[break][break]

He imagined Tapu Koko could be similarly terrifying when enraged, even if it looked relatively friendly at present.[break][break]

Iron Crown can't escape the point-blank ELECTRO-BALL; sparks scatter over the surface of its shining hide as it rears back with a mechanical cry of frustration. Its hooves come down hard against the ground, shards of METAL BURSTING forth from the impact to shower the trickster spirit.[break][break]

"Have you seen the ones that look like Beasts? My husband keeps a set." He scoffs in disgust. "I can't imagine having to train them."

“That’s unfortunate!” Fern quips in response, “It certainly makes my day to day that much more…interesting.”[break][break]
But it could also be noted that Fern and Tapu Koko often seemed to feed off one another’s antics. They squabbled in their own strange way, as much as they enabled the other toward mischievous and curious behavior.[break][break]
They laugh, though, and nod, “Fair enough. Though perhaps you will find one that she is fond of.”[break][break]
Unlikely, but still.[break][break]
Lugia was a force to be reckoned with. They still recalled one of the first times they had seen her—high above Sootopolis, looming like a dark open as Rocket assembled on the city steps to discuss their next maneuvers. They’d been no more than a grunt then.[break][break]
“This one is quite temperamental itself,” they add, watching as Tapu Koko wheeled around and loosed a peal of THUNDER that lit up the training space with furious light. “But one learns to avoid flaring such tantrums.”[break][break]
It isn’t a simple task—fickle as it is (as they both are.) But there are tricks all the same.[break][break]
Shrapnel bursts outward, and Tapu Koko attempts to dodge the lot of them, growing irritable when it can’t quite manage and the shards slice through its feathering and ping off of the dome of its shield mask.[break][break]
“I have! I’ve managed to acquire a Walking Wake of my own, though I’ve not managed to train it. I’m much more fond of the Roaring Moons, if I’m being honest.” Granted, they’d only managed to forge the semblance of a bond with one.

"I don't mind," Cillian insists earnestly of his patron. "I think we're well suited to one another... just like you and yours, I suppose." He nods toward the Tapu.[break][break]

Lugia was serious, but so was he. They, too, fed off one another, though it was far less pleasant. They fed off one another's excitement, but also their anger.[break][break]

Cillian throws up an arm to shield his eyes from the brightening THUNDER that sparks off the metal hide of his Iron Crown. It swipes with its horns like SACRED SWORDS slicing toward their foe.[break][break]

But it's weakening, clearly, the power of a legendary beginning to tip the scales.[break][break]

"That's the one that looks like some ancient Salamence, yes?" A pause for confirmation, then, "I had one, though abandoned it in favour of my Luxray. It seemed a solid trade."[break][break]

It hadn't exactly been a true trade, more of an accidental exchange in the heat of battle, but Cillian was more than happy with the result.

“I wonder if that’s part of it,” they considered, studying the speedy movements of their patron. “If we are drawn to what we know. Or if they are, rather.”[break][break]
Tapu Koko had certainly found them after all, and not the other way around. But they alighted so well in their disjointedness, strange as that sounded.[break][break]
Light swells in the wake of the guardian’s attack and Fern squints against it, but shows little other discomfort. They’ve grown accustomed to it over time. The blade of a SACRED SWORD slashed against Tapu Koko’s shield, threatening to carve grooves in the bird’s head shape.[break][break]
It takes offense to this (as it does with most things,) and soaks up energy from the remaining ELECTRIC TERRAIN before it sets loose a flare of DISCHARGE.[break][break]
“Yes, that is the one!” they say enthusiastically. Fern sighs at the mention of forgoing the potential of a bond with such a powerful creature. “To each their own, I suppose. Mine is terribly fierce, though. I am quite fond of her doggedness.”
