Seeing his sister-in-law win a gym battle really made a guy feel inadequate. That bitch cried when she saw a puppy. But she’d somehow ended up with three badges? What a joke. If he didn’t know her, Ezra would think she was blowing someone. Still, it reminded him that he and 15 hadn’t actually played together in a while.

A lot of people tended to write the Rattata off. They saw them as nothing more than live bait. Annoying pests to take out with poison and snap traps. But the little shits were actually pretty scrappy. Not that his was. Whatever courage the rat had seemed to evaporate the night it tore that Drapion off of him. Right now, he was curled up next to Ezra’s neck with merlot eyes nervously flicking from path to path.

Today, he was on the hunt for a particular Pokemon. A rich client came to him begging for a Beldum. And, while he didn’t need the money, Nonno encouraged him to dust off his hunting gear.

His words roll with contemplation.“Power, huh?” For a second, it looks like he might just accept the answer. Let the terrorist get away with sounding like an edgelord. But that’s never been his style. Sure, he styles himself a doberman, but he has the tenacity of a chihuahua. You tossed him off your ankle, and he’d come right back. “Definitely mommy issues.” These words are directed in a faux whisper at the Rattata on his shoulder.

With angry tears in its eyes, the Combusken stands on the edge of the clearing. Its claws smoke as it begins coaxing heat into them. They soon go from white to white hot. But Ezra just fixes it with a grin. “Pretty sure I had an STD like that once.” A little beak clacks in frustration as its feathers stand on end. The eyes above it are wrong. There’s something rabid and unpredictable in them. “Groupies, amirite?” As the Combusken charges, it finds itself facing the tie wearing Rattata. A Sucker Punch sends it staggering backward.

At the next question, there’s a pause. Fuck. Admitting that he used to be a Ghibli stan wasn’t really a fit for the rocker persona. Ah, screw it. “It’s a witch from some kid’s show. That vix kind of looks like her.” Or, at least, it had a stick.

“Reminds me.” There’s a pause as he watches the Combusken race off into the undergrowth. Little pussy’s fucking bawling. The rat darts back to his trainer’s feet. "I’m getting a ton of shadow Pokemon lately—” They sold for a fortune outside of this hellhole. It was like having a fucking gun instead of a Pokemon. His steel arm gestured vaguely in Cil’s direction. “Did you and Lugia open up a factory?"[break][break]

If he notices the other Pokemon approaching, he doesn’t react. This guy was way more fun than some fucking queer goose.

His attention lingers for a moment on a Beldum. His husband had promised him one that he might donate to Rocket's stores, but their LIGHT METAL made them a consistently invaluable resource for the Genesect project.[break][break]

He clicks his tongue, and a gout of purple-black fire swallows the poor thing whole. The Delphox cackles gleefully as her prey falls, but Cillian only flicks a pokeball toward its sparking form.[break][break]

"Ah," is Cillian's only response to the explanation.[break][break]

He seems disinterested, as though he might part company from the rockstar, until the magic words are spoken. Shadow Pokémon. The underboss turns to Ezra with an interest that borders on dangerous.[break][break]

"Are you, now?" He sizes up the stranger. Did he have any of the shadows on him now? Would it be worth launching an attack? "It's not our doing. Where did you find them?"
