while much of rocket nursed their wounds and prepared for war, many from the labs had hit the ground running since their spaceship imprisonment, seeing the value for space technology and the need for understanding of the tera crystals at hand.[break][break]

along with lulu's promotion, it had made for little time to tend to what else had been on her mind: where her friendship stood with Naomi Sato . anger festered, pushed to the back of her thoughts out of necessity, about what seemed to be an alliance with Greyson Connors .[break][break]

their meeting that day was not meant to discuss it, but she imagined it would inevitably turn in that direction.[break][break]

despite her lingering bitterness, she came with drinks in tow – one coffee, and one green tea from a good café in sootopolis. with the bag in hand, she knocked on nomi’s door with the other.

Nomi touched a fingertip to the Meteno Deoxys Core, then pulled it back abruptly as the nevermelt ice coating it burned her skin.[break][break]
She sighed, lamenting her lack of progress in researching the alien object. She made a mental note to contact Makoto Kurumi; perhaps the Deoxys already in Rocket's possession would be able to wake its sleeping kin.[break][break]
War was coming. They needed all of the weapons they could get, even if she felt agitated by her leadership's fixation on conquest over conservation.[break][break]
The polite knock on her office door caught her attention, interrupting her dark musings. She blinked, looked up from her desk, and realized with a sudden surge of emotion who had just arrived. A smile began to etch its way across her lips at the thought of catching up with Lulu Flint; and yet - though it was genuine, the expression was tainted by a hint of apprehension, an unresolved tension between the two women.[break][break]

at nomi’s call through the door, lulu entered, shutting it behind her and approaching the head scientist’s desk. ”sato.” before there was a chance to extend an invitation, she was taking a seat, placing a green tea in front of her old protégé.[break][break]

”i’m back in my office, as i’m sure you’re aware by now.” her tone was professional, her expression void of any familiar warmth. “we have matters to discuss.”[break][break]

her gaze flicked down at the deoxys core on the desk. though her history with rocket’s other deoxys made her wary, its spatial origin and appearance in her dreams drove her curiosity enough to ask. “any luck with the core?”[break][break]

Though she managed not to flinch, the formal greeting stabbed Nomi in the gut. Barely a month ago they'd been calling one another sister. Now? She was just Lulu's scientific peer again.[break][break]
She steeled herself, forcing a hardening of her own heart. She, too, could be a professional - when she had to be.[break][break]
"I am aware," she confirmed, keeping her tone neutral. The green tea was a nice gesture, but she cautioned herself against reading too much into it.[break][break]
She followed Lulu's gaze to the core.[break][break]
"Not yet," she admitted. "I am hoping Makoto Kurumi's newly acquired Deoxys will be able to wake it."[break][break]
She had a feeling she already knew which other matters Lulu wanted to discuss, but rather than shy away from what was sure to be a difficult conversation, her crimson eyes found Lulu's with a measured confidence.[break][break]

the dream she’d had of deoxys made her feel drawn to the species in a way, despite her history with the one among them already. her eyes lingered on the core momentarily before her gaze shifted back up to nomi.[break][break]

Nomi opened her mouth to immediately reply - Greyson's just - - but stopped herself, the words dying in her throat. DRK Triad. Not Greyson Connors. Okay, she could work with that. Eventually, she knew, the Elite Four would come up, and she would need to explain. A small part of her felt relieved at the prospect of avoiding that topic for a little bit longer, however. It was just so...complicated.[break][break]
"Yes," she confirmed, finding her voice. "I do believe they are watching the RKS Machine. Ours and the League's." Lulu's next question was a far more interesting one - an angle she hadn't considered yet, she realized.[break][break]
She thought back to her ascension. Nisa Holo had been as real as anyone else in Nomi's life, on that fateful day. Solid, tangible, able to make contact with her and Isaac Merlo. That encounter hadn't felt like just another simulation, but...[break][break]
"I don't know," she confessed. "Anything is possible, but I think they're real people." She remembered that other timeline, the one where she'd joined their ranks instead of Rocket's. "They're too unpredictable to be a computer program."[break][break]
Unless, technically, they had all been programmed by some greater power. She shivered at the thought.

”computer programs can be very unpredictable,” she countered. ”but you misunderstand my question, i think. i mean the simulations, as the drk triad might have us believe they are. regirock’s tomb, azelf’s lake, the paradox war… do you think they are simulations? or perhaps they are alternate universes, branching, more and more, every time we intervene.”[break][break]

sure, there were some fantastical and abstract elements, but perhaps only to throw them off the trail.[break][break]

An involuntary shiver passed through Nomi. Father Winter had taken her to a world in which she, herself, had joined the DRK Triad instead of Rocket. How did these alternate realities - these branching paths - come to exist? Was it based on their choices now, within the Origin Point, or had Arceus - or whatever had created Arceus - mapped out these various iterations in advance of the universe's existence?[break][break]
And what of their time in Galar? Had that been a branching path, or simply a very realistic, very robust dream?[break][break]
A dull ache began to form behind her temple, directly between her eyes.[break][break]
"I think," she began, words forming slowly. "That the RKS scenarios have grains of truth to them, one way or another. I think it's quite possible that the entire network of simulations is, in actuality, a map."[break][break]
She had long suspected this, and now it was time to share her theory.[break][break]

certainly, grains of truth, she thought. even if the system was not creating new universes, she was much more certain that the data, and the truths in those data, had come from beyond. other spaces, other times, other gods.[break][break]

She couldn't, not really. It was more intuition than it was a true hypothesis. All the same...[break][break]
"I suspect the different locations referenced correspond to real places - either here or in other realities. The Ruins of Alph, for example. That would mean the stages are...coordinates. If we plot out all of those coordinates and take a look at the different pathways, we might be able to locate possible places where Arceus could be residing."[break][break]
It's a long shot, certainly. But what else do they have to go off of?[break][break]
"Would you...want to help me with that?" Nomi's cheeks colored, her face feeling suddenly hot. She didn't want to get her hopes up about that, but they were colleagues. Whatever their current differences happened to be, they could mutually benefit from continuing to work together. "We could go into the RKS machine together, as many times as it takes to make a comprehensive list of all of the locations."

Nomi couldn't help but smile a little, relief flooding through her; she hadn't expected apologies or hugs or anything so dramatic, but Lulu's immediate agreement to help warmed Nomi all the same, fanning the flames of hope: perhaps they really could repair their relationship, in time.[break][break]
"Places that exist in other worlds, or realms, or dimensions," she answered. "But also potentially...other times.."[break][break]
It was entirely possible that they might be able to find a way to traverse space-time, as Celebi and other legendary Pokemon could. Or find ways of infiltrating the other versions of Hoenn that existed, as Father Winter could. He had showed them all different paths they could have taken, that existed elsewhere in the vast web of universes.[break][break]
"It's all so..." she began, a measure of vulnerability entering her tone. "...Overwhelming, isn't it? Makes you feel small, like you're just a single grain of sand on a beach." But then a flash of excitement lit her crimson eyes from within. "But wouldn't it be fascinating, to see some of those places? To actually influence them?"[break][break]
Even the smallest fluctuation, the tiniest of ripples, could create a tsunami of possibility.
