Work didn't typically have him heading out too much. If anything, his work kept him cooped up in his office in Evergrande City. But PROJECT SAPPHIRE was allowing hi some travel time. In particular, he was walking into his appointment with Alexei Ivanov. [break][break]

Even since the reveal of the gym leader's legend, he'd been meaning to discuss the research into the djinn. Especially when Alexei hadn't seemed to have made much progress on his own. Or at least, if he had, he hadn't shared it during the gym leader meeting. [break][break]

"Morning, I'm here for my appointment with Alexei Ivanov." he explained. There were security concerns he needed to discuss. And, as a bonus, he could discuss future work with PROJECT SAPPHIRE. Sure, it wouldn't be ready for launch for a bit more, but he could still get in touch with people now.

Luckily for Paxton, it would be the nicer of the two receptionists who would be the one to receive him—if he had the misfortune of getting Claire instead of Ethan, then the other man might’ve gotten their head chewed off.

The simmering resentment was there; but very well-disguised as the brown-haired, perpetually tired receptionist looked up and very nearly slipped up with saying, “Welcome to Fortree Gym, how can I help you?” but instead caught himself and had mentioned the other greeting line instead.

“Welcome to the Fortree Rescue and Treatment Sanctuary, you’ve got that appointment for today, correct?” he would confirm as he stared back at the other man through thin-rimmed glasses. Man, he would kill for a smoke right about now…

“Give me a few minutes, and—”

“…no need, Ethan, I’ve been here waiting for them to show up,” the currently suspended Gym Leader would cut the other man off, removing a slim menthol cigarette from his mouth and making sure to blow the smoke upwards (and away) from the direction of their guest.

“Oh! Alex, I didn’t know you were there.”

“Surprise,” was all he would continue in Ethan’s direction, giving the man a knowing smirk that meant, ‘I’ll take it from here,’ and bid to leave them alone to do their work.

“Took you a while to make some free time to check in, wouldn’t you say,” he began as he led the way towards the right door that led to the previous open-air arena; which was now just a large, empty space with blurred out paint lines on the ground.

“Let’s take a walk.”

He nodded at the secretary, not about to repeat himself as he let the man process through his own request. Though he never finished, Fortree's own showing up to great him. They'd finished early perhaps. If he had anything to say about the smoking, he didn't, ignoring Ethan to offer the gym leader his own greeting. "Good Morning, Alexei. Thank you for having me." [break][break]

"I apologize for the delays. GYM JAM's end coinciding with the end of that mochi pestilence has brought me no end of scheduling strife." he stated as he followed the man. "But I'm happy to be able to meet Fortree's own Gym Leader. We can discuss security protocols in private but I have some drafts already based on the building available schematics. We can discuss compare it to your own security plans and move on from there." he stated, eyes already roaming around the gym to better understand their position. [break][break]

He looked back to the flying type specialist before adding, "I also wanted to discuss with you the other subject you brought up in GYM JAM. I will be heading a new project under the AQUA initiative. I think you might want to hear about it."

At the mention of mochi, he felt his stomach turn.

That was… hitting a little too close to home now; as he felt the bile rise in his throat. However, he held it down and fought through the pain as he took another light drag from the slim cigarette between his fingers as they walked out through the back of the reception hall and headed outside to the open-air arena.

“With regards to what happened during that time where the mochi became a plague that settled upon the land—honestly, everyone lost track of things until now,” he breathed out, exhaling some smoke skyward before returning his attention back to the other man.

There would be a few moments of silence as he contemplated what the other had to say.

“What of it, what plan do you want to discuss with me?” he would continue in a quiet tone.

"We didn't know what it would lead to." he added solemnly, his smiling flickering before going back to something casual as they continued walking. Perhaps it was concerning how easily Paxton could compartmentalize and move on, but that very ability had gotten him through that week of hell. Scheming, planning, working. Survival had come first, with the ever present buzzing of brainstorming his escape. [break][break]

"While our time away was somehow only 2 days, it still sent all of the League into backlog." Not that it mattered. Paxton had made time for this. Urgency even ore pressing after being spirited away. He looked up at Alexei before around to make sure there was some semblance of privacy. [break][break]

"PROJECT SAPPHIRE will finish its rework soon. It's a new, AQUA led research project meant to take stock of the legendaries the League houses and study how they work." he began before looking back at the gym leader. "How much progress have you been able to make on your own regarding the Djinn you protect?"

What—what the hell.

“That shit was just two days long?” he would exclaim quietly, before swearing in a language that the other man may or may not be familiar with ~~(Russian)~~ before taking a sharp inhale.

“Two days? Are you sure they’re not shitting with us? It felt like three fucking weeks.”

The moment the other asked him about his own research on the Wandering Stormbringer, he couldn’t help but take another sharp inhale.

“I’ll have you know,” he would add quietly, “…that Tornadus is one of the many legendary Pokémon from my home region of Unova. And that I have knowledge about their fables and tales. It’s the other brothers that elude me.”

Specifically—Thundurus and Landorus. Even though he’d seen a Thundurus—or what looked like one—at the end of the Vital City Tournament.

Holy shit, that felt like a lifetime ago.

“…I wanted to chase that goddamned Thundurus-adjacent Pokémon, the one that appeared at the end of the tournament, but. Well, the storms were apparently too much for even someone like me to brave despite being accompanied by him.”

(And the djinnis were one of the few that adhered to the concept of gender, so there was that.)
