When he wakes, his mouth is dry, and he struggles to open his eyes. He shifts, toes first them legs then knees. Finally, he gathers the strength to tug down some of his sheets. Mint paused, feeling the numb hurt and wincing as he discovered each and every new painful spot. He's not sure how long he's been asleep, just that he felt marginally better because of it. [break][break]

He stared ahead, the beeping of the EKG nearby grounds him. He's awake. He's in...the Rocket sub medbays. He...fought Remiel Calcifet and- [break][break]

There's a soft presence- something...strange. No words, no pictures just a feeling. Alost like a greeting. It fades promptly and he sits counting ceiling tiles confused but also rather accepting of it in his state. The IV drip attached to him looks half full. His suit's been taken, with multiple manages and patches hiding heavy black and purple bruising. [break][break]

He wants to sit up. But it's difficult. He opens his mouth to ask for help, but there's only a slight wheeze. He can't even hear himself. At least he can still move his head. With a sigh he looks, and surprisingly, instead of a nurse there's a visitor. It takes him a couple of tries. He swallows thickly trying to wet his bone-dry tongue. In the end, the result is quiet and barely there. But Jayden had always been a quiet guy. He'd hear it. [break][break]

"...hi." is everything he can offer after all his efforts, his lips pulling back into a tiny smile.

how ironic this was. that mint frost would find himself here, in the very bed that jayden occupied nearly a year ago, in a destructive prison of ice.

[break][break] the same mint frost that jayden cross had called into rocket by his own hands. the same mint frost that jayden had taught to weather each and every storm. the same mint frost that jayden had provided a blade to wield, to teach him to plunge a knife into flesh in the dead of winter.

[break][break] the same mint frost that jayden called his very best friend.

[break][break] the rocket admin is not willing to leave his side as the beast occupies the icu, on the verge between life and death, struggling to stay alive. jayden cannot bear to tear his eyes away from his best friend's mangled body, of the reports that he's demanded by the hour.

[break][break] it's only fern delaney that manages to pull him away every so often. they take turns watching over their friend, watching his body flicker back into life.

[break][break] is this what it was like when chien pao had claimed him?

[break][break] no, a voice inside him reminds jayden. no, you had no choice.

[break][break] but mint did. mint had chosen. he'd chosen to chase after this godly creature because it was part of his research. because it was his work. because it was part of the life that jayden had unwittingly dragged him into.

Mint shifted, dragging himself ever so slowly upright. He couldn't afford to choke if he drank laying down. Jayden offered him water with a swiftness and Mint can't even offer a laugh. He tilted the glass and Mint drank quickly, sucking up tiny sips. The water was cool and desperately needed. He didn't realize how hot he was. Normally he ran colder. [break][break]

He drank as much as he could, a little bit of water dripping down the side of his mouth and to his chin. He pulled back to signal he was done with it for now before lifting a shaky hand to wipe his mouth. "How-" his voice was hoarse, and he coughed into his shoulder to clear his throat. [break][break]

"H-How long....have you b-been here, Jayden?"

his expression was stern as he watched the other man obey, not willing to break eye contact even as he watched the liquid travel smoothly down his throat. his gaze focused on the beast with a calculated eye, his heart catching in his throat, as if he could not believe that the other was still alive.

"I'm ok." he said, the response automatic. He was too tired to soften it into something more believable. "Aren't you tired...?" he asked. At the mention of fern delaney, he looked past his friend to see if the other Admin was around. Truthfully, it felt like he'd taken a long nap. [break][break]

He has no idea how long he's been under. Just that his bones have been put back into place and his wounds are bandaged. "I don't...I don't think I did too bad..." he added, awkwardly trying to address his best friend's unblinking stare. "The...the Galarian Articuno pulled me out. Eventually." Probably before he passed but in the fog.

Jayden is steadfast. He speaks fact. He knows Mint will be better and Mint believes him. He huffs, the effort to laugh there, and nods. “If you say so.” [break][break]

The morphine makes him slow, dulling his movements. He watched confused as his Admin carefully pulled back thin sheets and slid onto the recovery bed with him. He's too weak to move away or towards him. But Jayden gets him there. Cool fingers chill hot skin. He didn't realize how warm he really was. “Oh. It…doesn't.” He said as he lay against his friend. It's familiar. Almost nostalgic. He'd missed him. [break][break]

“No…it's good actually.” He said as new, tiny wings flutter briefly. “It's cool against the soreness.” He explained. Not that Jayden's chill touch would ever bother him. If he had cold hands, Mint would simply warm them for him. He nuzzles into him, relaxing with a small sigh. This was comfort. This was his best friend, trying. And the fact that he did it without prompting only showed the effort put into the gesture. It's refreshing, fever hot skin relieved by the chill. [break][break]

Even weakened, clinging to his companion, the whispered praise makes him stop, breathless. The little name uttered after shocks him. Vestigial wings perk up, sharp and twitchy. “Oh-” it happens almost immediately. His eyes water and his grip on Jayden tightens. His body is wracked with tremors as he tries not to bawl. [break][break]

It's embarrassing to have tears stream down his face like that. But Micha breaks Mint's confidence. It kills Neon's nonchalance. All the hurt from his trial comes rushing back all at once. “T-thanks, Jayden- I-” he interrupts himself with a broken sob. [break][break]

“I kept s-seeing them- I- I couldn't take it!” His desperation bubbles up to the surface, an echo of himself in Ever Grande. “It trapped me- I-” he'd hated seeing the Fisk's again. He'd hated hearing his name again. But even so, Jayden and his soft praise, lended a sort of soothing happiness to the memory of who he was he'd never felt before. And despite everything, it felt good. It felt…good to be acknowledged. He'd done well. He was worthy of praise. Jayden didn't hate him. Hadn't meant to leave him waiting. Hadn't abandoned him.

resentment burns - always - like golden ichor through his veins. but not for mint frost. never for mint, who had become like something more than a best friend to him. somewhere along the line — between the days of transferring forbidden pokemon together, to the awkward meet-cutes in saunas, to the wintry cold of a baby's first kill — he had become something more. he had become family.

[break][break] hatred holds no home here. there's no room for chien pao, not between the feeling of his arm pressed against the side of the other's head, bringing him close to him.

[break][break] unlike their first encounter like this, there was an ease - a comfort - to doing so.

[break][break] a hand streaks against his wet cheek, brushing against those unnatural feathers, wiping away those foolish tears. those teardrops go crystal-cold against his hand, flaking away like a snow's first frost against his fingertips.

Rough hands had never belonged to his family. Artists by trade, perhaps Luci developed a few callouses but...for the most part. The Fisk's minimized the look of their blemishes, disappearing them until nothing was left. Callouses, were shrunk and hidden. And if a child cried because the blisters grew again, then they would cry in silence. [break][break]

He didn't associate the rough with his family. Only butter soft, and cold, and sharp. Bruises, carefully placed and metal that stung but never cut, lest they scar his face for good. And Michaelis' face, even under the role they made him play, had been one of the only things truly left untouched. After all, it would be a waste of Noemi's looks to tarnish that. [break][break]

But jayden cross 's hands aren't soft. They're rough, and scarred and calloused. They hold years of training and effort. White lines cut through pale skin. Strength underlies the gentleness. He knew Jayden could kill him if he wanted to. He knew that at one point, it'd crossed his mind, however briefly. But even existing in that reality, he wasn't afraid, because he knew Jayden never would. Even against Father Winter's nightmares, he believed in Jayden. He'd fought so hard to see him and fern delaney again. They'd never hurt him. [break][break]

His crying is a crack in the damn. The emotional toll his trial had taken on him finally being collected. Chilly hands tug broken sobs out of him, as he stutters and struggles to breathe. A cold hand moved to tear stained skin and he opened his eyes, blinking away the blurriness. He watches his friend's power work, sniffling hard as he answered. "Yeah- I-...I got out." [break][break]

He'd run away the first time. And then he'd tried to kill his illusion siblings the second time. And then- well, it didn't matter. His patron had made a deal with him, spoken through his brother's face. "I'm back." he assured the Admin, raising a hand to weakly wipe at his own face.

Mint tries to recalibrate. He tries to hold it together. He had his cry and spilled ahis tears and now he needed to calm down and recover. But the process of putting up his guard, of reconstructing his wall is halted by one man. jayden cross secures him but it's not forbidding. He doesn't feel forced to stay, he could pull away at any moment and assure him he's fine. [break][break]

But he doesn't. He couldn't. Even if he really wanted to. And when he speaks it's like he's read his mind. Like he was in the tree with him. Like he'd heard luciano fisk 's and Silvano's berating. The doubts that had almost crept in. Of Jayden. Of himself. [break][break]

And it all comes crashing down as he felt himself do something between a sob and a sharp gasp. It's cutting. It hurts. His throat aches and his chest feels full and his head is pounding as his ugly face scrunches up, unseen. He twitches into a tighter ball. The sudden emotion makes him run hot, burning against the icy chill of Jayden's new body. "I- ....I-I missed you-" the pressure claws at his throat and strangles his words. [break][break]

For a while he just cries, sobs muffled by Jayden's clothes and body wracked with wave after wave of horror and panic that still lay dormant in his mind ever since SCIAMACHY. Ever word, every gesture tears through layer after layer compartmentalization. He tries to say his name, he really did. He tried to say something like, [break][break]

i love you.

[break][break]

like, [break][break]

i was scared.

[break][break]

or even like, [break][break]

i wish you were my brother instead.

But what comes out is wailing and sobs that sounds like screams, that don't quite make it out of his room. Wails turn to sobs. Sobs to hiccups and gasping breaths. Eventually, his breathing, harsh as it was, falls into the same rhythm as Jayden's soothing. White knuckle fists relax just a little. His exhaustion allows him to just lay there. [break][break]

Jayden was right. He was home. He'd never felt more at ease in his life. He's not telepathic, as far as he's aware. Even still, he opens his mouth and swallowed thickly. "I...I still hate that name..." he whispered, voice rough from the crying. "...but I...I-I don't..." he stopped as if hesitating. The words are put together clumsily. "I don't mind if it's you." [break][break]

emotions are not his strong suit. they never have been.

[break][break] he was a sword, a weapon built primarily for rocket's use, and swords did not feel emotion. they did not seethe, they did not cry.

[break][break] instead, weapons bleed.

[break][break] still, jayden's hands card through mint's own even as his friend holds himself tight to him, tighter still as those emotions claw it's way to the surface by muffled sobs. a younger version of himself would have felt discomfort at being held so close to someone that didn't have a relationship with him like the one that he had with fern delaney. even now, in the present, there were very few instances that would have allowed him to be in a position like this one. but this wasn't just any person in his arms. this was mint.

[break][break] "names are important," he said. "but - neon, mint, micha, it doesn't matter. you will always be mint to me, myshka."

[break][break] together, they would always be mint and jayden. at least, as far as he was concerned. in that moment, the admin clung to the hope that nothing would change, even as everything around them shifted. even though he knew it was futile, he wished it would stay that way.

[break][break] but with the ruinous future that lurked in the shadows, ready to ambush him — there was no telling how long this would last.

[break][break] he held mint closer, running a soothing hand down his back.

[break][break] "shh," he murmured. "just sleep. you need the rest."

Worriedly, they chew at their bottom lip as they wander down the sub’s corridor that leads them back to the medical bay. Not for the first time since they’ve stepped away, Fern wonders whether or not they should’ve left jayden cross alone to fret over mint frost. Whether they should have left either of their sides.[break][break]
There is a guilt that sits heavy in the pit of their stomach at the idea that Fern is gone when both need them. But nothing would get done if they didn’t take turns, and Jayden certainly wouldn’t get the rest he needed if Fern didn’t tug him away from the beast’s bedside every now and again.[break][break]
Not good, proper rest, anyway.[break][break]
Still, no matter how rational they attempt to be, it doesn’t quell the feeling. And it’s likely it won’t until Mint wakes.[break][break]
It does little to hope that he will be alert by the time they reach the right room, but their heels click a bit quicker as their pace increases. Fern has done all the paperwork they can manage to focus on. They only thing now they can focus on is checking in[break][break]
Something that doubles when they think they hear the remnants of noisy, sniffling sobs wafting down the hall. Their heart in their throat, Fern swerves into the room–blue eyes bright with concern as they pin themselves on Jayden curled there around Mint. “Did something happen?” The words fall out of their mouth breathlessly, frantically closing the last bit of distance to the bed.[break][break]
Their hand resting first on Jayden’s shoulder as they look down, then moving to Mint’s cheeks to thumb at sticky, drying tears. The three of them rotate through this cycle of worry. One of them inevitably in the worried focus of the other two.[break][break]
But Fern would not trade this, because it means they are all together.

Emotion ripples out of him, leaving him exhausted as the last of Jayden's words echo in his ear. He's just Mint. He'd always be Mint. That's what Jayden saw him as, and that's all that really mattered. The stroking on his back is a grounding reminder of where he was. He hadn't been abandoned. He was cared for. He was alive. He sniffed hard, before Fern burst in. [break][break]

Newborn wings flutter in surprised and relief. "Fern-" it's nothing more than a weak gasp but seeing them again is enough to just about kick start another round of crying. But it's almost like they can sense that change in mood as they move to check and comfort him as well. [break][break]

It's easy to quiet his sobs. He'd trust fern delaney the most in this world. And this image is so stark a contrast to the demon in his nightmares. Both of them were. He couldn't imagine losing them. Fern reaches out and Mint weakly clings to him, selfish for Fern even after all the time Jayden had spent watching him too. He murmurs their name, whispers apologies. That'd he'd never meant to worry them. That he was sorry. Until he weak voice gives out and he's lulled into sleep by the gentle warmth that surrounded him.
