Stormy could honestly say she'd only visited Fortree probably once when the resident gym leader's gym had officially opened. The whole story of that had been a blur though, and she couldn't very honestly say that she had enjoyed it or remembered it well. It was very simply a city full of trees and treehouses. It was certainly beautiful, but so enclosed and close-quarters that it made her a little uncomfortable.[break][break]

Even now, she watched an entire flock of tiny Pidgey take off from the rafters of a big tree. Their hundreds of wings lifted them high into the air as they swarmed and blocked out the sun before settling down in the grass several lengths away. An older lady had spread out birdseed for them and they were more than happy to fill their bellies.[break][break]

Stormy gradually makes her way to the flying-type sanctuary, pushing through the doors and taking a look at the ceiling and the several different Pokemon hidden around the room. It was honestly breathtaking.[break][break]

After several moments of idle awe, Stormy remembers what it is she's here for and eventually calls out.[break][break]

"Alexei? It's Stormy! I was hoping you had an opening for a gym challenge - I meant to call ahead but I lost your number."

Today is a quiet sort of day, one where he doesn’t have to wake up early for once.[break][break]

It’s why he’s tried to ask anyone who would want to come down for a Gym Challenge to come either on the weekends or after the Sanctuary proper closes up for the day, because he’s also part of the staff that’s in charge of the rest of the employees—with a new hire and an intern running around the place, he’d had his time literally quite full.[break][break]

Well, this was why weekends were usually the best time for people to come by and challenge him![break][break]

Fortunately for Stormy, there is no little blue blob to be had mindlessly meandering around the place—as this time it’s a little Ribombee that spots her and makes a literal beeline toward her, holding a yellow-colored puff. Flitting ever so close to the lady’s face, the dual-type Pokémon tries to offer the delicious Pollen Puff, before looking up and seeing that the Braviary had return.[break][break]

Humming softly in the Braviary’s direction, the avian notices that they’re not alone and immediately nods at the Ribombee before flying off toward the little house out back, the better to alert his human companion that there was someone who was waiting for him.[break][break]

It was close to the ten-minute mark when the sound of fluttering wings announced his arrival—quickly slipping off the back of the excitable Braviary, who he then gives a pat on the beak.[break][break]

“Yes, yes, I heard you, and—oh, hello, fancy seeing you up here,” he says in the young lady’s direction, before letting the Braviary fly up and join the rest of his winged brethren.[break][break]

“How in the name of Arceus did you lose my number?” he asks her a few moments later, finishing off a half-rolled piece of bread that’s slathered in strawberry jam while waiting for her answer.

She takes only a few more steps before a peculiar buzzing fills her ears. She swipes at her left ear, a moment of surprise taking her as she turned to see a familiar-looking, but only barely, Ribombee hover quietly next to her face. It appeared to be offering her a puff of pollen, which, while it smelled heavenly, caused her nose to tickle uncomfortably.[break][break]

It doesn't take long for the brief interaction between her and the tiny fairy-type to be cut short by the brief shadow above her head. The sun is momentarily blotted out and a terrifyingly large shadow crashes over her own, swallowing her tiny frame whole. The Braviary seems to take notice of her and veers off in a new direction, clearly deciding on a change of plans.[break][break]

Several minutes pass, but Stormy in the meantime is more than happy to continue interacting with the small fairy-type Pokemon who was so friendly enough to have simply approached her without fear. [break][break]

"You're so tiny! I don't think I've ever seen a Pokemon as small as you. I bet you're tough though, even despite your size."[break][break]

Ten or so minutes pass, not that Stormy even really noticed. But the flutter of wings and the cool breeze from the draft of a landing Braviary is enough to distract her and pull her away from her idle chatter with the Ribombee. There's a bright and cheerful smile on her face as she approaches Alexei. The Braviary very quickly launches back into the air to continue about his day, and she only briefly follows him with her eyes before tracing back to the gym leader.[break][break]

She blushes deeply at his question, and she rubs the back of her neck while chuckling sheepishly.[break][break]

"Well, I'll be honest. I totally forgot to write it down. I was in a hurry and had other things on my mind."

“I don’t believe that,” he begins, this mischievous look on his face. Seeing that there was a literal floating yellow puff, he reaches out a hand for the Ribombee to alight on before taking the yellow treat with his other hand and eating it.[break][break]

“She wanted you to try her sweet treat, to be honest,” he continues a few moments later before letting the absolutely tiny Ribombee go along her way. If he let her name slip, well, there would be a few suspicions thrown around here and there.[break][break]

But he decided not to say anything for now.[break][break]

“Well, since you’re here, obviously you want the challenge and the badge. I have to ask, though—are you more of a traditionalist like Kyle, who went straight for a battle… or are you up for something a little less boring and a lot more adventurous?”[break][break]

The question hung in the air, and her answer would depend on what tricks he’d have to draw up for her.[break][break]

While she was his equal in the sense that they were both Gym Leaders, at the same time she was here today as a challenger—and it was up to her to choose what format she wanted.[break][break]

He did believe in the freedom of choice, after all!

Stormy's cheeks flare up with colour in her surprise as Alexei blatantly denies her excuse. [break][break]

"I may be many things, Alexei, but I'm no liar."[break][break]

She watches quietly and thoughtfully as the young man eats the pollen puff his Pokemon had originally offered her. For a moment the young woman appears slightly crushed, having not realised the thought behind the gift or the reason it had been offered.[break][break]

"Oh.. my bad then. Next time, okay?"[break][break]

Awkwardly, she clears her throat as Alexei takes a moment to ask her about a gym challenge. She thinks hard about his question, unsurprised to hear that Kyle had already challenged Alexei to a battle not that long ago.[break][break]

"I'm always ready for an adventure, Alexei, surely you know that."[break][break]

There's a mischievous glint in her eye as she smiles coyly at him. [break][break]

"What do you have in mind?"

“I hope you’re ready to get wet,” he says as he looks up at the sky, before seeing that the gray storm clouds were gathering. “To think I was hoping for some fine weather, too. Do you have any companion that can fly through a rainstorm?” he inquires of her afterward as he begins to zip up his jacket, before pulling the hood over his head.[break][break]

“I have a plan, and it’s going to involve flying. Although the weather’s not looking too nice out… but that’s half the fun of it! Pushing yourself through extremes…” he says as he casually whistles once, then twice—before another shape flies through the air and lands close to him.[break][break]

A Salamence makes his appearance, before he reaches over and gives Gabriel a neck rub. “I know you like flying through stormy weather,” he says softly to the draconid, “…let’s have some fun out here, hm?” he adds before looking over at the challenger for the day, waiting for her to join him up in the sky.[break][break]

At the same time, he touches a finger to his ear and begins speaking softly into the mouthpiece there, so cleverly hidden by his hair, letting the staff know that their assistance for today’s challenge would be needed.

The rain begins to drip, drip, drip, down her face. She lifts a hand to wipe the wet from her cheek, but her eyes are glowing with determination. A little rain never hurt anyone.[break][break]

"I'm ready for anything."[break][break]

She says this firmly, but without malice. Someone's lit a fire in her belly and damn if she isn't about to nurture it. Even though the rain continues to pour and the sky lights up through the darkening clouds, she knows who she's picking to help her with this mission.[break][break]

"Any of my Pokemon would carry me through a rainstorm. I'm ready when you are."[break][break]

Stormy rolls a pokeball, now slick with rain, in the palm of her hand. It clicks open and a black-scaled Charizard stands next to her. Smoke billows from her nostrils but she appears glorious, healthy, alive with energy. The rain slides down her dark skin, but she's still glowing.[break][break]

Her eyes fall on the gym leader's Salamence. She immediately impressed, reminded of Freya's beast and of her own that she had just recently acquired. He mounts his dragon and she follows not far behind. Wadjet crouches down for her mistress to climb between her shoulders, and the beasts skin is warm as ever. The dragon beats her wings hard, pushing them both into the stormy, humid air.[break][break]

"It's been a while since I've had some fun."

The higher he went, the more he spoke quietly into the mouthpiece, and on command, the rest of the Flying and non-Flying types began to swarm through the air.[break][break]

While some of the smaller non-Flying types served to be living obstacles for this challenge, the bigger Flying-types, his actual bunch of avians had another purpose entirely.[break][break]

Once he was done speaking into the mouthpiece, he reaches for the whistle on his neck, before giving the Salamence a neck rub. “Gabe, this isn’t for you, but for all the others to react to,” he begins quietly, and blows a single note.[break][break]

While it may not have been heard by Stormy, any Pokémon who could pick up high-frequency sounds would definitely hear it. To his ragtag bunch, it meant something else entirely—make the entire place as unpredictable as possible.[break][break]

And then the first of the aerial obstacles started headed their way, courtesy of his Aerodactyl, Terra as well as his Archeops. Rock Slide after Rock Slide began to rip through the space between himself and Stormy—of course he was going to throw himself in danger as well, what was he? Going easy?[break][break]

“Think you can fly through this?!” he shouted from up ahead, forced to flatten himself on the Salamence’s back as the boulders continued to fly through the space, being buffeted and slammed by the many buffets and gusts of air ripping through the space above the arena far below.[break][break]

“Get into the clear… if you can!” and with that the chase was on.[break][break]

While he’d had personal practice back at the Navel Rock disaster, to actually have something similar, but in a controlled environment—well, this was the first time he was actually doing it, so this was also a surprise to him.[break][break]

The plan looked good on paper, but how would his companion fare through the pouring rain, the howling wind, the incoming boulders strong enough to knock someone off if they found their mark?

Stormy's breathing slows, her eyes close and she allows herself to inhale the thick, humid air. It's moisture is intoxicating, fulfilling, rejuvinating. She can feel the air shift beneath her body even as her thighs hold fast to Wadjet's back. Wadjet follows her lead, evening out her flight and extending her wings to carry them quietly.[break][break]

Her hands slowly extend outwards, a small smile spreading across her lips as the air whistles through her fingers. Oh god, flying feels so good.[break][break]

Their moment of pure bliss isn't interrupted by the rain and the storm, the harsh winds cutting and whipping through her hair, snapping the strands harshly against her soft skin. No, it's interrupted by Wadjet's reaction, a rippling tenseness at the sound of a whistle.[break][break]

Stormy doesn't hear it but her hand reaches out to steady her companion and look around in slight unease. The Charizard's skin jumps at her touch, her wings beat a few times for her own comfort and they level out again. Stormy glances up at Alexei, positive that he's up to something.[break][break]

Suddenly, she can hear the sound of thunder, but it isn't lightning that strikes in the space between her and the gym leader. With a gasp and a jolt, her and Wadjet pull back, pivoting in the air and pushing past the sudden and dangerous onslaught of rock slides. As the boulders crash to the ground, they twist and turn and avoid the pebbles. Some bounce off of their skin harmlessly, merely dirt.[break][break]

They're both breathing heavily, their hearts pounding wildly at the scare. It seems that Wadjet was not as quick as she had thought. There's a slight cut on her neck, a matching one that had opened a slice in Stormy's hand. She grips her other hand tightly, blood drips from her fingers.[break][break]

Alexei's taunt is jarring, there was nothing about him that had suggested he was an attempted murderer.[break][break]

Despite this, she's confident she can get through this, that she and Wadjet can overcome any obstacle he throws at them. The pair had trained hard against Fernando Silph to combat being assaulted by rock slides and other rock-type attacks generally feared by flying types. She was ready for this.[break][break]

"We're clear!"[break][break]

The rain washes away their blood, but not their spirit.

While even he had difficulty navigating the aerial obstacles, he was surprised to see that she’d taken much aplomb to it and had flown around reasonably well.[break][break]

The fact that the Charizard was undeterred by the pouring rain meant something, after all.[break][break]

As he waited for her to clear the first round, the second was being prepared. Pressing on the headset hidden in his air, he relayed the next set of instructions—if boulders weren’t going to deter her, maybe this next round would. The wind picked up with intensity, and along with it—a sudden flurry of snowflakes.[break][break]

He’d given the order to the staff to send out his Pokemon that knew some combination of Hail and Blizzard, and the cold, drenching rain suddenly dropped in temperature as the pouring rain eventually gave way to dropping snowflakes—some soft, others hard, but all of them had one thing in common—the moment the ice came in, the water slowly got overwhelmed and the downpour around them turned into a localized version of a blizzard.[break][break]

He knew that the people down on the ground had recalled the Aerodactyl and the Archeops, now bringing out the Aurorus and the Froslass who’d brought about the shift in weather from down on the ground. Along with the gradual change in weather, came a howling wind from somewhere—the gale-force winds picked up in intensity, and then he felt the chill.[break][break]

Even his Salamence did, too.[break][break]

“That’s not the end of it, actually,” he said once she was close enough. “Surprising you made it through all those rocks. Well… I hope you’re ready for the biting cold!”[break][break]

The biting wind began to blow, before Blizzard after Blizzard came hurtling through the cold space. What made this slightly worse was that the other Pokémon that could use Hurricane were also going bananas, therefore bringing in their special kind of mayhem.[break][break]

“It’s not just agility those who dare to call the skies home should have… there’s also endurance!” he continued as the cold snap of weather spread out as fast as the Aurorus and the Froslass could whip up.[break][break]

He knew that a friend of his used this strategy to bring him to his knees, and here was hoping he could make it work.[break][break]

“If you freeze, you lose! This is aerial tag now, and you’re it! Catch me if you can!”[break][break]

Despite the grumbling coming from his Salamence, he gave the draconid a neck rub. “Just try not to get hit by them, okay?” he whispered soothingly as he this time flew straight into the heart of the storm, never mind if the Salamence was grumbling under him.

She can feel it, that crackle in the air. That potency, that danger, that absolutely petrifying charge of energy. This was barely a scratch of the surface to what comes next. If she had thought that narrowly avoiding falling boulders was dangerous or difficult, she was in a world of hurt.[break][break]

The Charizard takes a second to collect herself, to focus on the pump of her wings, the supercharged and unpredictable air currents beneath her wings. Her blood is running hotter with her determination and gall. She's not giving up, not for anything.[break][break]

A little rain had never slowed this pair down.[break][break]

But a little cold wind and snow just might.[break][break]

The air drops in temperature. Stormy can feel it as goosebumps spread across her bare skin. She wasn't well-clothed for a blizzard. The rain drops that soaked her hair have now begun to freeze, her hair no longer flows with the same effortless bounce it had just a moment ago. It was now stiffer and more taut. She was freezing.[break][break]

Wadjet's wings grow stiff and she fervently shakes off ice that collects on the thin skin. Her tail burns brilliantly, melting the ice that threatens to take her down.[break][break]

Stormy's teeth chatter as she clings to the back of her companion, willing the beast to turn up the heat and keep them both warm.[break][break]

"We're stronger than this, Wadjet. Let's show him we're not gonna back down this easily."[break][break]

Her words are but a whisper and the encouragement is enough for the Charizard to regain strength. Stormy is counting on her.[break][break]

The woman's eyes narrow suspiciously as the young man calls down to her. His tone isn't exactly mocking, but there's a definitive coyness that she isn't sure she appreciates.[break][break]

He explains their next objective, a game of tag. Wadjet bellows, the challenge being taken head on. She's fast, she knows it. But she has to play smarter, not harder. This isn't about being fast, because the wind and the snow slow her down. Despite her intense body heat, she isn't accustomed to playing in the cold, even the hottest of fires could be put out with too much snow.[break][break]

Fortunately, Alexei rode a dragon - a Pokemon naturally weak to the cold. Perhaps they had the upper hand in this scenario.[break][break]

"Let's go, Wadjet!"[break][break]

With another bellow, the beast releases a tremendously hot bout of flames from her maw. They spill forward and envelop the pair, the warmth melts any ice remaining on their wings and skin. The action helps Wadjet regain some speed and pick up the pace. Her wings propel her forward as she flies directly up to avoid the majority of the hurricane.[break][break]

The plan was to get up above them, above the storm, through the worst of the trial. All they had to do was catch up to the gym leader.

While his choice of mount was rather unorthodox, he knew he had to switch at some point—the thing is, would he be able to switch Pokémon in mid-air without having to fall all the way to the ground?[break][break]

In the back of his mind he knew he was able to do it exactly once before, but that was with a hell of a lot of adrenaline rush that had made him do such a risky maneuver.[break][break]

It was also a life-and-death situation, so that was working against him too.[break][break]

Sometimes he hated how his own Pokémon did their job too well. There were a few times he underestimated just how much power they had, and boy it was starting to show.[break][break]

“Gabe, come on! You’re tough as nails. I’ll treat you to a hot spring bath later, let’s fly through this! Up, and keep quiet!” he urged on, squinting through the snow. Crap, what a time for him to forget his snow goggles.[break][break]

As the chunks of ice continued to pelt down from several directions, the Salamence flew into the wind, swerving and avoiding as much of the flying hazards as he could. There were several icicles flying too close here and there for comfort, and his wings were starting to be coated with a light layer of frost.[break][break]

“Cartwheel!” he whispered harshly, urging the draconid to fly high, higher, and then somersault as quietly as possible in the air. Hopefully he was flying over where Stormy was, and the burst of illumination he could see not too far from where he was hanging on for dear life on Gabriel’s back was a hopeful indicator that he was going to drop down behind her—hopefully, if the Charizard didn’t see them coming.[break][break]

Trusting the howling wind and pelting snow to keep them hidden, the Salamence then flew upside-down for a few moments, letting the air current buffet and guide them downward, before a singular pat on his neck indicated that they should drop down, now, and surprise Stormy from out of nowhere.[break][break]

“Tag,” he said, breathless as he hung onto his Salamence with his legs as best as he could and dropped the upper half of his body so he was upside-down, before gently touching one of the Charizard’s warm horns.[break][break]

“You’re it,” he added with the slightest hint of a grin on his face.

Stormy continues to push her way through the snow. Wadjet's body works overtime to combat the cold, her skin nearly scalding underneath Stormy's hands. Except, the woman doesn't flinch, because she's used to the heat. She's a woman of grit and determination, she's been through much worse.[break][break]

So the hail seems to melt off of both their skin despite the stinging pain. The woman's jaw is set as she stares ahead, waiting for Alexei's next move.[break][break]

Except.. all of a sudden the image she was following of Alexei and his Salamence was gone. Just as clear as they had been there they vanished and Wadjet's powerful strokes seemed to slow as she too grew confused and uncertain. With deep breaths, the black Charizard attempts to smell through the storm, only to be overpowered by the humidity of the rain and ice.[break][break]

Stormy nearly falls, startled and afraid as Alexei appears from directly above. Her grip slips on the Charizard's back, and it's only because of Wadjet's quick reflexes by catching the woman's body with her tail and turning her neck to hoist her back onto her back that she even makes it back.[break][break]

'You're it,' he says, and she shakes her head, catching her breath. Her heart is hammering and her hands shake as she holds tighter to her Pokemon. Wadjet is uncomfortable and equally nervous, but willing to push to the end of this death-defying trial.[break][break]

"Okay, girl. You heard him. We're it, so let's find this crazy bastard and show him we aren't softies."[break][break]

Wadjet bellows, clearing the air with an incredible burst of flame from her maw. The heat pours from her body as it illuminates the sky, and by doing so illuminates the shadow of Alexei's Salamence. Wadjet powers through the sky, her wings slashing through the elements as she prepares to overtake the Salamence in the air.

He did give Stormy a most righteous scare by dropping down from out of nowhere and catching her by surprise. Now that he’d declared she was it, he then pulled himself up back on Gabriel’s back, before rubbing his neck.[break][break]

“Let’s go,” he said, and none too soon—as the Charizard let out a bellow and heated up the air, so did the frostcicles forming on the Salamence’s wings melt.[break][break]

Now that they were flying through the storm once more, he pressed his right hand to his ear once again, and the howling wind picked up even further. The cold air around them dropped to lower temperatures, and it was clear after a while that he had to switch mounts—the problem was trying to do it in mid-air.[break][break]

He could already hear the Salamence’s whining and grumbling under his knees, and he gave Gabriel reassuring neck rubs. “Shh, soon… just have to wait for the right time…” he soothed the draconid, hoping that the Charizard he had summoned would find them in time. He’d specifically asked for them to send Ravana as high as they could so he could perform the aerial bait and switch—knowing that the other was a Fire-type, the ice wouldn’t be too much of a bother for the Charizard.[break][break]

Of course, Alexei still had no idea that his Charizard was a female and not a male, after all this time.[break][break]

Eventually, the flapping of wings, and a heat haze deep in the blizzard signaled that they were close. He perked his ears up, listening and hoping that this wasn’t Stormy on her Charizard—soon enough another Charizard came into view, radiating as much heat and warmth as it could generate.[break][break]

“Gabe, close in,” he urged, and slowly, surely, the Salamence bridged the gap, allowing Alexei to hop over from the draconid’s back and onto the Charizard’s own back. He then recalled the Salamence, and with another neck rub, flew deeper into the snowstorm howling all around them.

Stormy feels Wadjet's muscles straining, sweat slick against the side of her neck and chest. It's white and frothy and she's breathing hard as she attempts to keep up. She's following the heady smell of the worried and distressed Salamence, the Pokemon's discomfort and pain as a result of the ice almost impossible for her to lose track of.[break][break]

And yet she had, because just as the black-scaled Pokemon arrived above the clouds to find and tackle the Salamence and it's rider, the Salamence was gone. Stormy winces through the snow and rain, almost certainly missing the brief beam of light that signaled the Salamence's return. In their place stands a youthful and energized Charizard - not at all the same weathered and tired Salamence they had been chasing.[break][break]

She grits her teeth uncomfortably as Wadjet breathes in the smell of her species. Her nostrils flare as her wings beat away more rain. Both of them are soaked to the bone, but Wadjet's tail flame still blazes strongly.[break][break]

They continue then, as Alexei and his new mount disappear into the snowstorm again. This time, however, they are a red beacon amidst the snow, whereas Wadjet and Stormy appear as shadows, their black hair and skin camouflaged beautifully in the mess of weather.[break][break]

"Okay, we've got them now, Wadjet. Just a little bit further."[break][break]

She whispers under her breath, her voice too soft probably for the Charizard to hear. And yet, Wadjet seems to respond anyways, grunting as she tosses her head back and breathes a flamethrower into the blankness. Of course, it's nothing but a distraction. The direction in which the flamethrower appears is not the same as which Stormy and Wadjet rise. No sooner does she exhibit this display of power, or what might be seen as desperation, that the pair drop from the sky and intend on flying directly up from beneath Alexei and his Charizard.[break][break]

And they fully intend on jostling him from his mount the same way he'd done to her.[break][break]

Should this work and she arrives successfully beneath them, she'll breath an exhausted but triumphant phrase.[break][break]
