The Wellspring Mask floated up from the sea of her memory, dazzling and beguiling in its promise of fulfilled dreams. The mask believed it knew what she wanted: to escape from the world, with the one person who didn't despise her for who she was.[break][break]

But was that enough now? Would escape purge her of all her doubt and misery, when the companionship of the one she desired most -- BARNABY FINCH -- was lost to her?[break][break]

"It's like I can't stop destroying everything in my path," she heard herself say instead. "I'd spent my whole life learning how to nurture the world around me, only to become Ruination itself."[break][break]

A hand irritably ran through her long blonde hair, restless and impatient. Her thoughts were forming too slowly; she wanted answers her mind hadn't fully processed into being.[break][break]

"But what happens after all this senseless and wanton destruction?" she blurted out. "It's like I can't stop myself from ruining everything I touch. Shouldn't it have some purpose? Otherwise, it's just... empty."[break][break]

It sounded so childish to say this aloud. Of course she could simply attempt to not destroy anything at all, in theory. But in practice, had she ever succeeded at that? She was too exceptionally suited to her antagonistic role. Even when she tried to escape it, Fate cornered her into submission.[break][break]

Wo-chien had selected its Avatar a little too well.[break][break]

"I want all this devastation to mean something. But I don't think it does."[break][break]

She dared to look at him, this beacon of ideals and hope for the region. She waited for the axe of his judgment to fall on her for her nihilistic confession.[break][break]

"I think sometimes, rage is just rage, and violence is just violence."

“EXISTENCE CAN BE MEANING ENOUGH.”

to assign purpose to something where it does not exist is foolishly human. a concept he expects from those beneath him despite being raised by one of their own. had she been burdened with glorious purpose before? or had that too been just a selfish wish enraptured by her own pursuit.

how much did he really know about her? about elysia?

more than he does her avatar? the shell that now hosts everything but her spirit? he blinks, once, and she reshapes his will when their eyes meet.

“destruction has a purpose. i’ve used it before,” he confesses. “when i was naive enough to think this was the only world i had to worry about.”

he pauses.

“meaning is what we give to it. if you cannot find it then i will find it for you. unless?”

"You’d make a good philosopher," she quipped, partially avoiding the question. It had etched itself in her mind however, turning gears that set her brow to furrowing.[break][break]

Creating her own meaning. Something about it didn’t sit right with her. It seemed to imply there was some choice involved. That hadn’t been her experience.[break][break]

Her head tilted towards him, a finger twirling through a loose curl absently. No matter how long she studied him, he never got any easier to puzzle out.[break][break]

where she studies him to find meaning, to divulge any sort of answer as to who he truly is, he does the same aimlessly. his gaze is vexed by her appearance, content just to marvel at her beauty as a simpleton would to a stroke of art.

there’s no need to understand the artistic value or technique behind the splendor—just that it exists. some masterpieces can stir the heart with just one look. others claim that even the most magnificent can send men to war.

in his deepest recesses, fernando is one of those men. however, his palate has been conditioned for only one piece. an indulgent taste that he would burn the world down if it meant another taste.

that is the difference between his ‘love’ and an infantile one.

for consistency is the true labor of devotion. not something fleeting. or worse, volatile.

Her fidgeting became more agitated. The ringing of a bell chimed, unbidden, in the hollows of her mind.[break][break]

"Do you really believe that?" she murmured, a strange vulnerability taking hold of her as her gaze found his. "That you can find purpose in destruction?"[break][break]

There was a seductive quality to that idea--almost too enticing to be trusted. Yet Ting-Lu's vision had hummed through her whole being with such insidious conviction. Denying the allure of it was like denying the way notes of music moved bodies to sway and dance.[break][break]

Violent desires had violent ends, but she so violently wanted this one to be true.[break][break]

“ISN’T THAT WHAT YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED?”

her fascination with humanity had never been just that—human. a lot of it came from the mysticism of it all. even nature could purpose destruction. do volcanoes not burn away anything in their path to make way for new lands? what about herds letting the weak and sickly feed the mouths of the opportunistic.

her fascination had always gone a bit steeper. how civilization could prospers and then kill itself in its own pride. hubris. a story as old as the human language. but that’s what made history fun. to recount stories, know them intimately, and then live through them again but with new characters and a fun twist to the plot.

a mile more romantic than his own views but one he would champion in lieu of his own, if she had asked for it. yet, she never did. instead, she asked for something closer to his own interest.

had that not been kindness? to abstain on behalf of another?

“such an idea is possible but often a trap for those that think too highly of themselves,” he advises with experience. “those who can do one are hardly fit for the other.”

She broke eye contact with him, mulling over her thoughts. Indecision warred within her, weighing how much to say and how much to conceal.[break][break]

In the end, she conceded more than she should.[break][break]

"...I don't think you can imagine it." She released a deep sigh, hands pressed to her eyes. "The sheer depth of the Ruination to come. I've seen a glimpse of it, and even that was..."[break][break]

She shuddered. A shaky breath escaped her lips.[break][break]

An abomination. An unholy reckoning. An apocalypse ushered in by a Ruinous quartet, whose siren song had beckoned her to join their number.[break][break]

"But I am not a builder," she admitted, cracking a tremulous smile. "I'm not much good at fixing the things I rip apart."[break][break]

Not the Petalburg Woods, not the people she loved, and surely not the world she was destined to destroy.[break][break]

"I am alone," she reminded him patiently. "In all the ways that matter."[break][break]

Wistfully she looked around herself at his condo, this minimalist and empty space that masqueraded as a home for a man with no time to rest.[break][break]

"What we are when I'm here -- when we're apart from the world -- it doesn't exist anywhere else."[break][break]

It was what made these sorts of rendezvouses exciting for him, she suspected. The forbidden thrill of it. The cloak-and-dagger of illicit conversations stolen in furtive moments. It had to be exciting for a man whose life was so tied to routine.[break][break]

If he was drawn to her for the woman she'd been when they'd met, her purpose was to be a distraction.[break][break]

She understood that role. She could play it well enough.[break][break]

"We stand on opposite sides of this war. When I do what I must, you'll be expected to stop me. I understand that."[break][break]

It was why she'd come here in the first place--to reassure him that she understood this.[break][break]

"But should I destroy the world as we know it," she said, looking up at him questioningly, "then perhaps we can build it into something better? In our own way."[break][break]

It was a fanciful thought. One she didn't quite believe in--although she was tempted to, if for but a moment.

“WHY?”

a question so simple that it undermines the entirety of her premise. all her assumptions are reasonable, given the context of her own perspective, but they require both o them to fall into their own molds. an expectation that fernando will tow the line that he has done so many times before.

times that proceed her.

“because you say so?”

he lays his allegiance flat against the table. he does not abandon the league lightly, rather, he embraces the silent fear that everyone has felt once before. what if fernando silph abandoned the responsibility he touts so definitively for his own selfishness. what if he truly views the world as a game for him to play with?

“you have me, el.”

but fernando can never truly break character. his own avarice is laden with acts of service. he still bears a burden, it just shifts to a new puppeteer.

“in whatever way that is.”

"Because the world doesn't make exceptions for us, Silph. At least it never has for me."[break][break]

Skepticism lined her face, familiar in its hardness; even so, she tilted her head at him with a bird-like wondering. How she looked at him seemed to reflect all the contrasts that competed within her. All of her remained fearful of past ghosts, while tempted by childish promises of a future unlikely to manifest.[break][break]

Again, the fateful chime of bells and horns heralding Ruination sang in her mind, the image of Ting-Lu daring her to succumb further to fantasy. How many times would she have to learn this lesson, to know better?[break][break]

How many men would so willingly lie to her?[break][break]

She released another breath, one that turned into peals of breathless laughter.[break][break]

"What should I do with you, then? Set you against the League? Demand you kill your own, in defense of me?"[break][break]

Impossibilities. She didn't believe them, but it amused her to consider them like this, safe in the confines of this little world they'd temporarily created.[break][break]

She could dream here, because it was safe if you knew it was only dreaming.

he sighs.

“the world does not make exceptions. it does not mold itself to a person’s whims because it is just that: a mold that needs to be crafted.”

he looks at her with a pleading conviction.

“you must become the exception.”

one that strums with a sternness that could crumble at the slightest touch.

“rocket. league. you’re still thinking too small. that you are restricted to the confines of what you know. but you can be so much more, el.”

his brows furrow as his frustration breathes life into itself.

“what do you want?”

He talked to her as if she was a child, but he was the one who had such lofty, unimaginable ambitions for her.[break][break]

She cast her eyes away from his single, probing glare, closing them to think back instead to that day in Area Zero. Death had whispered around her at Regirock's arrival, sharp and sudden in its terror. That sensation had lingered with her long after, its memory as palpable as Ting-Lu's tempting vision of salvation.[break][break]

"You believe yourself weak," a small voice hissed in her ear. "For all our power, you remain WEAK and SHACKLED by your CRAVEN MIND."[break][break]

And hadn't that weakness cost her?[break][break]

Faces came to mind. MATIAS SILPH. kyle lopez. FERNANDO SILPH. Navy. Josh Devlin.[break][break]

How many more men had almost killed her, or spared her from death? How many times more would she be allowed to cheat the reaper before he collected its due?[break][break]

"I want to stop being afraid," she said finally, looking up at him. "But the world demands we be afraid. There's too much that wants to kill us. And to kill me."[break][break]

The fantasy shattered, fading into the ether as she moved to walk past him. She mourned it, brief as it was, and immediately hated herself for mourning it after.[break][break]

"I don't think you understand that. Or maybe you're simply unwilling to see the world for what it is."
