He awoke slowly.

For a moment, the world remained blurry and awash in a curtain of pink, his vision slow to come into focus.

He rose on the bed, feeling the Yuina Higashi's warmth desert him as he looked around.

It was dark still— well past midnight. The only light in the room was what little filtered through a thin slit between the curtains.

All was normal.

"... Tch." He grunted, reaching over to stretch his neck. "_{Can't ever just say what'cha need...}"

The only thing not normal was his dream, and the left over feeling in the back of his mind that there was something he needed to do— and it was not just his medic work.

"Uugh." He groaned, flopping back unto bed besides Yuina, mattress shifting slightly beneath him as he stared holes through the ceiling.

Where Doug sat himself up on the bed first, slowly moving, the quiet murmer of his voice, Yuina stirred only a little bit, curling in a bit more. Suddenly it was much cooler...[break][break]
It was his weight shifting the bed again, his groan upon laying back into his pillow that caused Yuina to wake, if not a bit suddenly.[break]
"Mmm," she stirred, drawing in a breath as she moved to look and find him in the darkness.[break][break]
"Doug...? What is it," her voice soft, quiet, not one hundred percent focused, but concerned all the same.

He felt her stir before the first mumble came out of her mouth, instantly feeling guilty as her voice reached him.

"It's nothing. Just... Ugh. Lele bein' Lele. I think." He said softly as he turned unto his side to face her, leaning over to peck her forehead. "Sorry for wakin' ya. Go back to sleep, love."

Yuina had a hard time sleeping (without him, he liked to think) as it was; he didn't want to be the reason she didn't get a full night's sleep on a work day.

Tapu Lele's nonsense was for him to parse anyway. He was the supposed expert.

For better or for worse, she was awake enough, and would be for a little while yet... Yuina did settle back down into her pillow though as Doug moved closer, a soft kiss on her forehead.[break]
"Hmm," she sighed, taking in his warmth again, but his tone was... Off, maybe even unsettled?[break][break]
"I know nothing... Nothing is a very close friend of mine," she returned softly, gently... He didn't normally seem to be taken aback by something about Lele... She didn't want to pry, but she wanted to know that he was alright more...[break][break]
"Is this different? Her reaching for you in your sleep," Yuina wondered. At least for the last while that they had been spending together, he hadn't woken up due to Lele before that she could recall.

He forced a snicker, pecking her forehead and bangs a few more times.

"Clever girl." He said, wrapping an arm around her.

She had a point; he should've known better than to keep things to himself... he would've been frustrated as hell if it were the other way around.

He settled the side of his head onto the pillow, looking at her warmly as he gathered his thoughts.

"Yeah. Sort off." He said. "But... this is a first for her."

He hesitated to use the word 'communicate' when referring to Lele, but this was probably as closest and as clearest as it had ever gotten with her.

"She's never used dreams before." He mused— wait, was that right? He recalled something, back with Lucia Aldrete... or did he? Was that a dream too...?

He flushed.

"And I don't even know what the hell she was showing me!"

Settling into his frame as his arm draped over her, Yuina might have been able to fall back asleep in his comfort and his warmth... But he digressed into that nothing actually being something.[break][break]
She listened carefully, remaining quiet in the darkness as he spoke. For all of the time that she knew he and the deity had spent together, how long they had been connected, bonded, it was strange that this was the first time she had attempted to use Doug's dreams?[break][break]
He was flustered perhaps, Yuina couldn't see him but she could hear what might be frustration in not understanding what she was trying to show him...[break]
Yuina reached out a hand to rest on the side of his head in front of her, a thumb gently stroking over his temple.[break][break]
"Hey," she said first, her voice calm, soft, looking to garner his attention and bring him back to their space, for only a moment.[break]
"Don't think... Talk to me, tell me, what did you see," she encouraged, trying to bring him to a calm and a focus that he might be able to ease into recalling what he saw in this dream.

Yuina spoke, and he took a deep breath in response, rolling onto his back to stare at the ceiling. One deep breath in, another one out.

It had been a long while since Lele had managed to frustrate him this much. Perhaps that had been the goal— who knew with her.

He released one final breath before nodding.

"Right. Good idea." She was the smarter of the two, after all. "Hmm... I saw... an island, I think."

He hadn't really seen any beaches or gotten an overview of the place, but the lush, jungle like vegetation he recalled (barely) did resemble the sort of flora one would find around Hoenn's many deserted islands far more than the one found on the mainland.

Though the myriad of flowers seemed a bit off.

"I saw a lot of a... a stone structure Wasn't made of bricks, though..." He said, pursing his lips at the words. "I think. It was like— hmm... like it was carved into a cliff face?"

He remembered somewhat crude, yet intricate design elements on towering walls. A gaping maw leading inside.

"There were... pillars inside. And patches of grass... And flowers. I think there must've been holes in the ceiling... or mountain? Lots of sunlight." It was a stream of consciousness at this point, just saying the first ting he could recall.

"There were tracks with flowing water inside..." Aqueducts, rather.

It sounded like a fancy covered garden.

The room was otherwise quiet save for Doug's focused breathing, and Yuina waited both patiently and quietly for him to focus, to gather his thoughts... Remembering things from dreams or otherwise, if one wasn't prepared for it either came with stark clarity or fuzzy recollection... and as Doug spoke it seemed like it might still be a bit hazy.[break][break]
"An island, a stone structure, maybe a shrine," Yuina recounted with him, trying to help keep his thoughts clear, what he was seeing, maybe she could help him see more.[break]
"Was Lele there? Did you hear anything," she offered gently, visual details was one thing, but anything auditory or anything else that might have been around him could also help piece things together.

A shrine... A shrine...? Doug snapped back up into a seating position, his hand cupping his mouth as his mind began putting things together.

"There was... a deeper chamber inside." He said, eyes narrowing in focus. "It looked... no. Felt cozy."

Thinking about it, though, it didn't seem cozy to him. Not terribly so at any rate. There had been something like an elevated platform in there, surrounded by vegetation.

"There was... a cauldron there. I think there was... a bed?" Or had the cauldron been the bed? Was there ever a bed, or was it just an impression he got...? "Hn... sounds, sounds..."

Lele's giggling had been there, but didn't really tell him anything.

"I remember... singing." He said after a moment. "And people... Fruit and flowers..."

Silhouettes of people. baskets of flowers and berries...

Not expecting him to sit up so suddenly, Yuina started a bit, but only just. It seemed that they were hitting the right notes and slowly filling in the gaps... She listened to him still, more intently now, trying to help him, trying to disect his words so that he didn't have to, so he could keep thinking, seeing.[break][break]
"You corrected yourself... Did it feel that way to you, or to her," Yuina wondered, did she share feelings that way? Was she trying to tell him that was something she felt about this place?[break]
A deeper chamber, chambers didn't sound quite like a shrine anymore... But it did sound like a temple? Singing, people... Fruit, an offering?[break][break]
"A temple of worship?"

His face scrunched up slightly as he considered her words.

"Just looked like a pot to me, so... must've been her, right?" He said, scratching at his head.

Was she trying to communicate those feelings, or had they simply slipped without her realizing?

Yuina ended up connecting the dots for him, the word temple making him freeze in place.

"Right... right!" He said, slapping the side of his head. "I'm so dumb, I forgot all about it!"

A long time ago— not that long if one only accounted for hoenn years—, before he became her avatar, he had looked into Tapu Lele, interested in her healing ability... back then, for not entirely altruistic reasons.

There was not much documentation on the Tapu Lele of Hoenn— non that a high school drop out with a poor attention span and a poorer yet grasp of the internet could find, at any rate— but he had found information on the much more well known Tapus.

"It must be Hoenn's Temple of Life!" He declared.

In Alola, where the Tapus were still worshipped to modern day, the ruins of ancient structures of worship for each Tapu still stood. The Tapus were not often found inside, but it was not rare to spot them nearby either.

"I completely forgot after meeting her." He said as he flopped back besides Yuina, eyes wide.

Why wouldn't he? Tapu Lele had never even hinted at it until now.

Though...

"What about it, though...?"

They knew (or thought they knew, at least) the dream to have been about the temple now, but— What did Tapu Lele want him to do about it...?

He laughed.

"Surely she doesn't want me to go find it or somethin', right?"

Surely not. The lack of easily found documentation on it, that no one ever spoke of any tapu ruins on Hoenn, that nobody even remembered Tapus had once even existed in Hoenn until their reappearance less than 10 years ago...

Those temples were long lost by now, worse than even 'ruins', they could well be rubble. Not to mention— he was pretty sure it was located on an island— of which there were countless ones all around Hoenn, if it was even in Hoenn's archipelago.

Surely his matron wouldn't want something that unreasonabl—...

"... Oh, f*ck me."

Where Yuina may have thought she was just kind of fumbling in taking pieces and seeing if they fit together, knowing very little of the Deity other than her ties to Doug, it seemed she was on the right track... And Doug was able to take it from there.[break][break]
He deduced it must have been a Temple of Life, something he sounded at least familiar with given connecting with Lele initially, but only just. The idea of what she meant for showing this all to him in his dream hung in the air until he began contemplating things... Reaching a distressed conclusion.[break][break]
"Later," Yuina smiled softly, musing with a light kiss to his cheek as she sat up in bed, flicking on a bedside lamp.[break]
"It sounds like we're only just getting started on this," she said through stretching her arms, rubbing a bit of sleep out of her eyes.[break][break]
"If she does want you to find it, why does it sound like there's something in the way of that," she wondered though, he didn't sound particularly thrilled at the idea.

Had he been drinking water, it would've sprayed all the way up to the ceiling. Yet, Yuina just kept going, undaunted.

She had learned from the best, clearly.

His eyes followed her as she stretched, the light of the night lamp framing her silhouette.

Later would be a couple of minutes from then at that rate.

Luckily, her question brought his attention back to the subject matter, prompting him to turn his gaze back to the ceiling.

And sigh.

"'Cause there is. Several somethings really." He reached up to rub at his temples. "Last I checked, there ain't any records of Temple of life in hoenn... For that matter, I don't think modern Hoenn even remembered it had Tapus until they popped up less than a decade ago... I think?"

Yuina was a historian, but clearly this wasn't her field. He wasn't sure it was anyone's field/....

Though then again, he may have been talking out of his ass.

For all he knew, scholars could've had been hotly debating Tapu presence in the region for decades now; not like he was well read on the topic.

"I wouldn't even know where to start." He grumbled, throwing an arm over his face with a sigh.

He would know better of any potential history for the Tapu if anything, and Yuina wasn't going to pretend that she was at all an expert on the matter, so she didn't argue his concerns. "Well, fortunately, I happen to be somewhat of an expert on starting without a direction," she hummed. She might not know anything about the Tapus or their lore and legend, but what she didn't know, she could learn.[break][break]
"I've started studying the topographical changes of Hoenn over the last couple of centuries, given all of the weather changes and other events, kind of like Hisui changing to Sinnoh," she offered, she had a couple of books and texts that could reflect older portions of the hoenn archipelago that might not be charted or sought out today.[break]
"Not to mention, I work with unlimited historical resources, book or person," she smiled, poking at the side of his head like he had forgotten that she had precisely the right reach to get them started.
