Normally the rising sun would signal Noel for his eyes to open up. However in this cold and harsh land, darkness was a constant companion. If he was anywhere else, he'd simply laze away and remain asleep. But the harsh reality kicks into his brain, causing his body to jolt up, sitting straight from his sleeping bag as he wakes up in a sweat.[break][break]

He looks around him, still the same closed in space that he and Roy had left off from.[break][break]

Roy.[break][break]

His anxiety eases up once he sees the man still safe and sound, asleep. With a shake of his head, he staves off any inkling of fear he may have had. Now wasn't the time to be sitting around, they had work to do.[break][break]

"Roy. Rise and shine. Hope you were able to get some good rest with these dull beds. They were... a lot more itchier than I would've like, but it was better than nothing I suppose."[break][break]

Roy accepted his mornings in the same way as his draconic brothers; terribly. He wiped the sweat from his face, trying to shake off the lingering brain fog. Noel, his partner, was far too happy-go-lucky for mornings like this, especially in such a rundown, alien city. But Roy bit his tongue; he saw the value in someone who could be prepared at a moment's notice.

"Yeah, they weren't really doing it for me," Roy replied, agreeing with Noel about how terrible their sleeping situation had been. This was the price they paid for staying in a place like this. Roy pulled out the ancient pokeball containing Balmung and examined it for a moment before setting it down. He began gathering his things as the pair prepared to explore the primal rift even further.

"All right, let's start heading up."[break][break]

The pair pack their things and prepare to venture deeper into the unknown. With no other way to go except up, they climb an all too familiar flight of stairs, while the building may be different, the experience is one and the same.[break][break]

Except for one subtle difference. As they take steps upwards into the tower, crumbled walls lay before them that allow them to peer into the vast darkness, occasionally flashes of lights appear from down under, illuminating the surrounding area.[break][break]

Suddenly, rumbling could be felt that shook the steps they were ascending upon. Were it not for a railing, Noel could easily have lost his balance and fallen to his doom. Closer and closer do the quakes close in, until a dark visage appears before the two of them.[break][break]

Gigantic dark creatures that destroy everything within their paths. Monsters that, in every possible way, should not exist. He can only cling onto the rail for support and wait for the Ultra Beast to pass by them, hoping that it wouldn't notice the trainer duo and decide its meal for the day.[break][break]

"What are those things... Have you ever seen anything like it Roy? I know Ultra Beasts and Megalopolans are all that remain here but... I'd hardly call that thing a Pokemon."

Like all the times before, Roy followed Noel into the darkness. The draconid wasn't new to this experience; exploring the unknown was part of his job description. However, this other world seemed to redefine the term. He was reminded of the Dragonfall Shrine and the tranquility it offered, a stark contrast to the scene of the gluttonous pokemon before them.

"I've never seen anything like this," he said, thinking of his naganadel. He noticed some resemblance to the dragons he'd tamed over the years, particularly in the territorial approach the ultra beasts exhibited. Yet, they were still vastly different from anything he'd ever encountered. In a way, he was curious about them.

As the duo waited for the monsters to pass, Roy examined their surroundings. Similar to the book he found on their previous journeys, he stumbled upon an odd textbook. He swiped it from the ground as they waited for their turn to move. Although he couldn't translate the writing, the pictures suggested that the guzzlord used to be much smaller than they are now. Roy lifted the book and showed it to Noel with a single hand.

"Interesting, right?" Roy whispered. The pictures depicted the monster next to a humanoid silhouette, proving that these creatures were initially much smaller.

Noel takes the book in hand and flips through its pages. The words are completely illegible to the ranger but perhaps someone back in League headquarters would know how to decipher the writing. Any amount of info they could glean from any source would be a massive boon. The trainer's knowledge of Ultra Beasts was lacking, only having fought the creatures back in Dewford and other small skirmishes. One thing was for certain however, they were dangerous.[break][break]

"Good find. Let's take this and whatever else we can back. I'm sure the people back home would love to get a chance to read this."[break][break]

Once the tremors ceased, the two resume their travel upwards before meeting a dead end.[break][break]

Or what was one at first. Chewed out pieces of the wall revealed a convenient path that they can take to reach a tower on the other side. The way was narrow and hazardous for sure, but left with no other option, Noel takes the first step onto the wall made of trash and debris made by the Guzzlords.[break][break]

"Take care but we gotta be fast. Who knows when those giant things will come back around and we'll be like sitting ducks if they do."

"Right," Roy responded, matching the officer's stride.

Their journey had brought them to an incredibly tall tower, its labyrinthine interior acting as maze of mystery. Keeping a steady pace, the two navigated through a series of rooms, guided only by instinct and a rough sense of direction. The language of the megalopans was beyond their understanding, leaving them to rely on their wits. Some rooms bore a resemblance to familiar places, while others contained bizarre structures with unfathomable purposes. Undeterred, the duo pressed on through the seemingly abandoned structure.

Reaching the fourth floor, they encountered a scene of chaos with debris scattered everywhere and a lone elevator standing ominously at the far end. As they moved towards it, the floor beneath them began to tremble. From the cracks in the debris, hands emerged, followed by full bodies. Roy and Noel were no longer alone. The sounds of their arrival had awakened a zombie horde, their groans filling the air.

This peace couldn't last forever. A journey filled with ease meant something dangerous was lurking around the corner. Gross, disfigured hands attempt to reach out and grab at anything they could grasp. Noel swiftly moves out of the way, finding a safe spot where nothing could grab them. [break][break]

The cracks soon grew larger and larger by the second, until at last, they give way and a horde of zombified Megalopolans spill forth as a jumbled mess of bodies all eager to tear through anything and everything.[break][break]

"I knew we'd have to meet these guys again sooner or later. They're standing between us and the way forward, so let's get through them carefully Roy."[break][break]

From his belt, a Shaymin pops out from its Pokeball, standing at the forefront and immediately facing the threat head-on with a Petal Blizzard. An array of leaves shoot forward, their edges sharp as a blade that slice through flesh and bone. Where one falls however, another takes its place. Who knows just how many of them there were. Noel and his Shaymin wouldn't relent until every last one of them were gone.

This time, Roy was ready. He knew what he was up against, but even so, the monsters still managed to catch him off guard. As they clawed their way out of the soil and debris, Balmung shifted into a battle stance, flames licking at the corners of its maw.

"Whatever it takes," Roy quipped, almost like a joke. With a sharp motion, he signaled Balmung, who launched forward like a flaming rocket, crashing through the horde as if they were mere dominoes. Before Roy could give another command, the charizard was already on the offensive, lashing out with a flurry of claws and tail strikes. It danced around the shaymin’s relentless petal blizzard, weaving its own fiery techniques into the mix.

Despite their onslaught, it wasn't enough. For every zombie they destroyed, two more seemed to rise in its place. The numbers were overwhelming. If they wanted to press forward, they couldn't stay and fight.

"There’s too many of them. We need to move!" Roy commanded, relaying the urgency to every soldier in the room.

Even with their best efforts, with just the two of them they couldn't hope to possibly break through. The only way out was to fall back as Roy suggested. Noel's Shaymin and Roy's Charizard hold off the Megalopolans as best as they can, but when the call to retreat came, Noel recalls his Pokemon and takes a step back.[break][break]

"You're right... Let's regroup and find another way forward."[break][break]

Running away like this leaves a poor taste in the ranger's mouth but risking Roy's life along with his own in a fruitless endeavor was something that he wouldn't allow.[break][break]

With his Pokemon now tucked away safely, he begins the trek back down the tower to the lower floors. Safety was guaranteed as long as they could somehow halt their aggressor's pursuit.

"Let's move!" Roy shouted, signaling his Charizard toward the only exit amidst the chaos. Noel had already recalled his Shaymin and was sprinting ahead. Balmung lashed out one last time with its tail, clearing a path before they made their escape.

They barreled down the tower, retracing their steps through the way they had come. As they descended the flights of stairs, the zombies behind them seemed to pick up speed, closing the distance. They needed to stop the horde, but time was against them.

"Burn it down!" Roy ordered, not breaking his stride. Balmung, following closely, unleashed a ruby-colored Flare Blitz. The walls and ceiling behind them crumbled into debris, blocking the passage with a mass of rock and writhing flesh. The pursuing horde was halted, trapped by the rubble. But the tower began to rumble, urging them to race down the remaining flights.

In the end, they emerged unscathed, with a new book in hand to bring back home.
