Sea Mauville was large.

Spoiler alert.

A dozen stories, levels, and docks covered the preserve like a latticework and honeycomb. It was remarkably easy to get lost, turned around, and completely confused. Many of the rangers had provided detailed maps and pamphlets of Sea Mauville's layout, but it didn't help when a large portion of the area was collapsed.

That was how Rex ended up sharing a vent's crawlspace with one of Hoenn's Elite Four.

The hardest part of their mission wasn't breaking into an old manager's office to steal a ton of files, it was actually resisting the urge to challenge one of the strongest trainers in the world to a Pokémon battle with a Togepi.

"You're gonna knock down the third vent cover on the left and drop down, I think." Rex frowned at his map as they shuffled forward. "Not this one, nor that one... Say, random question."

He was silent for a moment.

"Any chance I can fight that big dog I keep hearing about?"

Sea Mauville, under bare technicalities and zoning laws, is within Dewford county’s purview, so here he his helping out with these rescue operations. He says a quiet prayer to Arceus that Ollie and Freya rallied the troops. It’ll be another of those crises that last a few days and go forgotten, just like how Navy likes things to be.[break][break]
“Speaking as someone who knows her well, it’s a load of BS. Get her worked up right and she’ll want to fight you all day.” As they arrive above the correct office, Navy at last holds up a finger. Pulling out a pokeball, he presses down on its center button and releases the world’s smallest Greninja. Hattori looks between them, then down into the office, and understands the mission at once.[break][break]
“We’re sendin’ Hattori down first. This place his chock full of ghosts. Chances are, there’s a Shuppet or Gastly down there haunting a broken microwave.” Hattori peels open the vent and descends, sneaking into the shadows.[break][break]
“You got balls. Most people wouldn’t even ask. What’s your deal?”

Oh, she was a she? Damn. Hopefully the big dog didn't get upset at him for misgendering her. That sword looked surprisingly sharp.

"It's a one of a kind fight. Where else am I gonna find a big dog that wields a sword? I'm fresh out of Lycanrocs and Honedges. You're telling me that fighting her isn't something incredible to remember?" Rex peered through the cracked vent as he spoke, his eyes spotting the broken microwave sparking in the corner. "Besides, if I'm gonna be a champion one day, gotta practice. Gotta be the best."

Gotta be like kyle lopez.

Most of the Elite Four's Pokémon were iconic. Rex had once seen a Hattori mug for sale in a gas station in Oldale. The frog wasn't as dear to Rex's heart as Hideo Kino's Beheeyem, but someone had to rep Littleroot.

"Means that when I get up to Ever Grande, I'll beat you too. Don't you forget it!" Ignoring the fact that his badge case was empty, a war was going on, and the challenge had been temporarily suspended. "I told my neighbors we'd be champs, one day."

“There can only ever be one kyle lopez. One MATIAS SILPH. One Katherine Fairburne. What’ve you got that they don’t?” His eyes shoot down into the darkness below, where Hattori seems to have fished out their rogue Pokemon. Hattori flashes two fingers at the Gastly, who tries to splash viscous bile all over him. A substitute falls in his place. More and more files are handed up to the twosome while the Gastly tries in vain to get a single hit in on Hattori.

"Most people shouldn't give up just because they grow up." Rex said defensively as he slowly drowns in a vent filling with paper files. There's a lot here, like employment lists, budgets, accounting tables. Loads of stuff that doesn't matter to Rex. "And the best way to get stronger is to take the Gym Challenge and make it to the champ."

He wasn't Kyle. He wasn't Matias. He wasn't Melody. But they hadn't been the people they were now when they started their journey. They had simply been the ones who had committed.

If he kept going, he'd make it too.

That was what it meant to be a champ.

"I've got a purpose. A reason to do what I do. Didya think you'd end up as Elite Four when you started out?" Kyle had a purpose when he started, but when you climbed all the steps to the top, all you could do was look down. Rex would keep looking up. Keep climbing. Push the boundaries. "I'm gonna be the strongest."

He repeats it again. A mantra uttered in the films of old.

He sits firmly in the League where who would win in a battle between him and his contemporaries comes down to factors outside their control. Were all of Melody Miro’s Elite Four (such as they are) to have a brawl, it would be a battle worthy of song. All three are avatars.[break][break]
He wonders if he’s looking at the fourth. Not today, as he well knows. Today, he’s just someone with a lot of hot air, talking about how strong he’s going to be.[break][break]
“Hard to stay on top. Faster you live, faster you burn out.” It’s one of those conversations that makes him wish that he had a smoke. Instead, he leans against the vent and watches as Hattori subdues the Pokemon below. Gastly falls away, knocked out. Hattori is a master of these sorts of nonlethal takedowns. Burned black by Groudon, eye gouged out by Cillian Quinn, one need look no further than the frog to see what strength costs someone in Hoenn.[break][break]

Strength is a mantra. It is the only mantra that matters. It is the only prowess the world accepts.

People could be spoken down with soft words and firm ideals. Pokémon could be tamed with kindness and might. But you could not talk to a mountain, convince a wave to stop raging, appeal to the emotions of a blaze. Strength made them all bend and fold to the will of the one who held power. People and Pokémon were the same.

I will be strong.

There was no need to justify it.

Still, he tries to. Navy is one of the strongest trainers in the region, likely the world. He is mighty, but his might has been tempered by age and experience. So instead, he utters a word.

"Littleroot." He pauses thoughtfully. "Gotta be strong for them."

Team Rocket. A bunch of wanton criminals, much like the mustache twirling villains in the films Navy had watched when he was young. They were evil and vindictive, but it hardly mattered.

When he met them on the field, Rex would win. No better practice than to wage war on the battlefield.

Littleroot had been a battlefield where war had been waged and time had turned lucid. Rex recalled the rusty screech of iron hinges from the locker he was hidden in, the faceless rangers that had pulled him from the rubble when the battle was won. When he had looked around for survivors, there had been fewer friends that he had started with.

It was a small town. A podunk. Hideo Kino did the best he could, but everyone knew each other and that made every death hurt slightly more.

"I won't die." His voice was firm, ambitious, arrogant. He shook his head once as he shuffled backwards, allowing the sheriff room to shuffle back the way he came. "I'll win."

How many trainers had told Navy those same words before coming home in shrouds?

The sheriff does not shuffle back. The sheriff grabs Rex by the shoulder, hauling him close. There’s something mad, urgent, profoundly sad in his eyes. His breath smells of tobacco and old metal.[break][break]
“My brother said that bullshit. I let him go off to Sootoopolis. You know what fuckin’ happened to him, kid? He died. Some Rocket tore off half his face. Eighteen years, and for what? So he could sit in a hero’s grave. You think you’d win? Go to the graveyard outside Petalburg. Plot 87. Ask Gabriel Navidson what he won.”[break][break]
Only after the words have been said does he realize how he sounds. Navy all but shouts, begging this soul to understand him. His grip, frighteningly strong in the wake of his bond, lightens. Rex is released, and Navy crawls past him, back from where he came.[break][break]
“Sorry. Been a rough year.”

He shuffled back further, cringing at the sheriff's wrath as the Elite Four member clenches at him, a desperate ghoul of yesterday.

This man represents today. A past that shapes him even now. His loss is what makes him strong. It's what drives him to the pinnacle of power in this region of gods and men. That might is what will shape tomorrow, even if that tomorrow is for the next generation, not for him.

There are words that Rex could say. Yet he knows that if they fall from his lips, his chances of becoming champion go up in smoke.

He thinks them instead, his face still cringing as he does so.

Gabriel Navidson was weak.

Yet those words can never be spoken into existence. Gabe had died. Rex would not. He was like Navy, a warrior. He would be the strongest because the people of Littleroot demanded it of him.

"It's fine. I get it. I've lost people too." Littleroot wasn't a big town, but they had their own small graveyard for those lost when time bent two years ago. People that Rex would never see again lay buried there. "Can I... go?"

The sheriff unnerves him.
