Sea Mauville groans as the ground beneath the preserve continues to buckle under the pressure of the Tera Crystals clawing at its foundation. They are an inconvenience. Ofttimes, they're a useful tool, powering the Tera Orbs that adept trainers used to great effect. Other times, they popped up and caused large amounts of damage.

This was one of those times.

Luckily, ollie morales and freya morningstar are quick in their responses, directing the Ranger Corps and the Pokémon League to the nature preserve's aid. The Head Ranger has come himself, and he subsiquently walks through the shifting halls alone. Water drips from the ceiling, pooling every few meters.

Yet eventually, he feels something by his foot.

'toge toge?' A Togepi looks up at the Head Ranger, before waggling its fingers urgently. 'toge!'

Ollie blinks, staring at the Togepi that has suddenly appeared before him.

[break][break] "Woah, lil guy, what're you doing here?"

[break][break] The Head Ranger leaned down, aiming to grab the Togepi. With his other hand, he tapped his watch to reveal a PORYGON-2 that materialized and blipped forward to scout the area ahead.

'Toge!'

Togepi turned, dodging Ollie's grasping hand with remarkable Agility, before turning and running down the hall, his small feet pitter pattering against the floor as he led the Head Ranger through the sinking nature preserve. Water dripped against the floor and congealed around blocked drains.

'Togepi!'

The duo eventually passed piles of defeated Crawdaunts, Clawitzers, and the odd Binacle, each defeated by Togepi's mighty hand.

Eventually, the clashing of blades rang through distant halls, the distinct sound of a Leaf Blade striking against steel and armor.

[break][break] Jellybean had never been this fast — at least, he thought — when she'd been a Togepi.

[break][break] As they sped through the tunnels, Ollie paused only briefly, glancing up at his Togekiss that trailed behind them to signal to clear the blocked drains with a swift AIR SLASH.

A voice rang out as the Head Ranger and Togepi reached a boiler room with a pile of unconscious engineers in the corner, unceremoniously piled together. In front of them, a young man and his Gallade danced with three Empoleon.

"Keep going! Gallade, if you give an inch, you'll shame everyone you've ever fought!" Rex shouted in delight as he wiped a bloody scratch on his cheek. Laughter leaked out as the young man clenched a fist. "Press the advantage!"

Despite his words, it was more of a disadvantage. Three against one, with innocent bystanders to protect, though Rex hardly seemed concerned with them.

Clang. Clang. Steel fins struck the Leaf Blade, though Gallade parried and slashed through one of the Empoleons. Rex grinned in malignant glee, not bothering to notice Ollie and Togepi as the duo arrived.

'toge?'

"Huh?" Rex turned to the duo, distracted. "Togep-"

An Empoleon swung a Steel Wing towards Rex's neck.

"Oh shit!" His eyes widened upon seeing the redhead and more importantly, the three Empoleon that he engaged with. "Watch out, bro!"

[break][break] Ollie sprinted forward without thinking, shoving the other boy to the side.

[break][break] Blood spilled down his arm from where the STEEL WING cut into his arm.

[break][break] He grimaced.

[break][break] Ugh.

[break][break] And GIDEON GRAVES had told him to be careful.

[break][break] However, that didn't matter right now. What mattered was that this kid was okay. The Head Ranger looked behind him, glancing between him and the Togepi, flashing a smile. "You okay, bud?"

[break][break] His Togekiss was also swift to respond, its feathery form glowing as a METRONOME activated. In an instant, golden rings of light in the form of HYPNOSIS shot through the air, striking the backs of all three Empoleon.

He senses the blade before it falls. Slow motion. Quiet. Silent. Uproarious. It sounds like a guillotine. Yet as it prepared to free his head from his shoulders, Rex fell back, pushed by Hoenn's Head Ranger.

"YOU-"

Unfortunate. He was prepared to go out in the way of the warrior, as long as there was a cry of triumph on his lips and the blaze of glory in his heart. Instead, another's blood fell to the ground in drops of red. Rex watched them as they fell.

It would've turned to indignation, if not for the matter at hand.

"I'm good. You're not." Rex said, clearly irritated. The Empoleon blinked drowsily, before falling into a heap. Immediately, Rex's Gallade sheathed his blades. There was no honor in defeating the dreaming.

'Toge.' Togepi waddled towards the sleeping penguins, before tapping one on the body. 'Pi!'

All of the Empoleon teleported away, and Rex turned to face the Head Ranger.

"I had 'em, you know. It was a good fight." Rex huffed, crossing his arms as he did so. Though his eyes widened as he recognized Ollie. "Wait... I know you."

"Oh phew," Ollie said with a sigh of relief. If he noticed the other's clear irritation, he didn't mention it. Though, given the fact that it was Ollie of all people... there was a good chance that he didn't notice at all.

[break][break] His gaze flit towards the group of sleeping penguins. What were Empoloeon doing here? This definitely wasn't their natural habitat. And attacking a defenseless human no less?

[break][break] Ollie blinked, his attention once stolen again. His head whipped around to the other, confusion gleaming bright in eyes of emerald green.

They hadn't met personally. Rex was not some Ollie Morales superfan that went to all of his speeches and public appearances. Ever Grande was too far away, and Rex hadn't gotten all of the badges yet to challenge the Pokémon League.

Emphasis on 'yet'.

"No, you're the guy who gave the speech with the white-haired council chick!" Rex scratched his chin thoughtfully. It was certainly one way to describe freya morningstar. "Can you tell her to repeal the Pokémon licensing thing? It's really inconvenient!"

An understatement, but besides the point.

"Rex. It's short for Rex." The young man pouted as he regarded the dozing Empoleons. "Pity. I was having a blast. Guess I'll have to find something else to throw hands with to pass the time."

[break][break] He thought about PENELOPE LIVY had told him, and what she had advised to do, and reminded himself that not ever civilian needed to know the exact innerworkings of how the League functioned. When he'd been a civilian, he certainly didn't need to know. And now that he wasn't, he almost wished that he still didn't.

[break][break] "I can pass the message along," he said, with an agreeable nod. "Though, have you tried calling yourself yet? Or maybe a letter?" He grinned goodnaturedly. "Sometimes hearing the words straight from a civilian's mouth has a better effect then another call from mine."

[break][break] "You ever been to Verdanturf? noah faber's great at throwing hands with." Well maybe not now, considering how much he was wallowing in his fiance's supposed death — but maybe that was just the kind of thing to get Noah out of his slump. "Or I'm sure Rustboro would give you your money's worth. I happen to know CIAN MAHER personally, ya know."
