[break][break] Ollie wiped some sweat off his brow. It had been a long day, between managing all the different Ranger groups that were dispatched to the sinking sanctuary. Currently, he and GIDEON GRAVES had been sent to one of the semi-flooded rooms, in an attempt to both secure it and see what kind of valuable information could be delved from the sinking city. Maybe they'd find something interesting enough that Gideon could take back to the Museum and even share with Yuina Higashi.

[break][break] "River and Huckleberry! How're ya doin?" his voice carried well, even across the calm waters, as both pokemon combined their efforts to stabilize a nearby structure with slabs of ROCK SLIDE.

[break][break] They chimed in acknowledgement towards the Head Ranger, who began shrugging off his coat. It was getting pretty hot in here!

[break][break] He glanced back at his friend, lips curved into a smile.

[break][break] "Thanks for coming out here, Gids. It must be a lot different from being cooped up in your office, huh?"

"Of course," GIDEON GRAVES replied, eyeing ollie morales as his arms rolled the ranger's jacket from his shoulders. "You know I've been wanting to help where I could. I appreciate you thinking of me."[break][break]

Speaking of, Proteus worked busily alongside the other Pokémon in the vicinity to clear the way so that their group could push further into Sea Mauville. [break][break]

"The office has its perks," The professor continued, though his attention was divided as he doublechecked their equipment bag while they had a spare moment, making sure their first aid kit and similar supplies were ready to go. [break][break]

"But this is quite exciting. Everyone at work made me promise to come back with at least a few good stories." To this his lips formed a thin, grave-looking smile; most would probably not recognize it as a smile, but Ollie would know.

"Of course I did!" Ollie burst out, turning to look at his friend. "I always keep you in mind, Gids."

[break][break] The Head Ranger grinned at him, perhaps a little too long, before turning his attention back to the area, making sure the Pokémon were properly diverting the water flow to prevent the room from flooding.

[break][break] 'The office has it's perks.'

[break][break] Ollie turned to him, raising a brow. "Really? You're gonna have to show me. Cause I definitely never see it," he chuckled, shaking his head. "I don't know how Lars did it for so long —"

[break][break] Something crackled on the walkie-talkie that was in hand, cutting him off. One of the other Rangers mumbled something into the speaker-set, saying that they needed extra hands in the adjacent corridor. Reaching for his utility belt, Ollie called out his Lanturn. "Citrus, go help them out will ya?"

[break][break] The Lanturn let out a bright trill, before disappearing into the waves.

[break][break] Ollie then turned fully to Gideon, matching his smile with a grin, feeling something warm spread through his chest. He was happy to hear that Gideon was excited too — sharing time with Gideon was always fun, but the fact that he could share a part of his life that was so close to his heart meant more than words could say.

[break][break] His eyes sparkled, as he walked closer to the other, close enough to touch.

Once the walkie-talkie's static subsided, Gideon shook his head and laughed softly through his reply, "I doubt you'd find many perks about working in an office. Would being indoors all day make you happy? Unlikely."[break][break]

Seeing ollie morales in his element was always a heartening experience. Gideon could see how much love and effort the ranger put into his job, just as the professor did in his own line of work. It was something they had in common. [break][break]

When his friend stepped closer, Gideon had half a mind to take a step back, but decided against it. He normally kept his bubble small around others, but Ollie was one of the few exceptions.[break][break]

"Treasure hunt?" He repeated, his voice thrumming with amusement. "We're here to secure the structure and help injured wildlife, no? I'm not sure we'll have time to find any treasure."[break][break]

With a passing nod to Proteus, the SLOWKING did just that — slipping into the waterlogged corridors ahead of them to scout out what might be lurking deeper in Sea Mauville.

[break][break] Ollie laughed. He couldn't even be mad about it — GIDEON GRAVES was right. He hated being indoors. It was an amazing feat that he'd ever finished his college degree, but perhaps the countless trips that he'd taken with his Hoenn Habitat of Humanity club had made the difference. Or perhaps it was the Kantonian Biology lecture series that his sister had encouraged him to sign up for. "Behavioral Ecology of Kanto Pokémon"? Something like that.

[break][break] "Mm."

[break][break] At the professor's rejection, Ollie huffed playfully, his expression looking like that of a Boltund pouting.

[break][break] "Fiiine," he said. "You caught me. I was just looking for ways to see if I could get your shirt off."

[break][break] Ollie grinned — as if he didn't say something completely scandalous - and stepped back. Just in time, too, because it seemed that Hops had found something in need of assistance. A group of young Horsea circled around the water, as a Starmie with a cracked jewel rose to the surface.

[break][break] Water sloshed beneath his feet as Ollie dropped to his knees at the shore and began to assess the injury. The wild Pokémon appeared on edge, perhaps even dangerously wary, but the Head Ranger’s expert touch quickly ease its nervousness.

[break][break] "Hey bud," he soothed. "It'll be alright."

19. Attempt to negotiate with poachers or wild pokemon.

Without moving from his position, Ollie glanced behind him.

[break][break] "Hey, Gids! We got anything left in the supply pack that might help?"

[break][break] Starmie jewels were notoriously delicate, after all. They might have to do an emergency dressing before getting the pokemon properly over to one of the first-aid tents if they didn't have anything on hand.

GIDEON GRAVES's smile deepened, crinkling the edges of his eyes. Even in this dilapidated, objectively dismal space, ollie morales still somehow found the gumption to flirt. He was a marvel, that was for sure. [break][break]

"Not very subtle of you. How did you picture that going?" Clearing his throat, the professor took on a mocking tone, trying and utterly failing to mimic his friend. "Oh, Ollie, I'm the treasure! Come plunder me~!"[break][break]

His eyes lingered on the ranger as he stepped away.[break][break]

"Something like that?" He chuckled lowly, but was cut off by Proteus waddling back over to him.[break][break]

As their Pokémon returned, it became apparent that many of the inhabitants here had suffered due to crisis that had transpired here. Gideon watched as Ollie leaned down to check on the Pokémon; in the meantime, he was already way ahead of his friend.[break][break]

"On it." The professor replied, his hands already leafing through their supply bag. "We've got some gauze, antiseptic ointment, surgical glue."[break][break]

He strode over, handing Ollie whatever he needed to get the job done.

Despite how GIDEON GRAVES probably thought his impression was a mockery, Ollie was more than thrilled to see it come to fruition. His smile widened.

[break][break] "Well if you ask so nicely —"

[break][break] He stepped forward, as if to do something about it, as if he truly intended to plunder that treasure in the most pirate-like of ways, only to be drawn away by the sight of Proteus and his Ranger duties.

[break][break] And, as always, work came first. It was one thing that he and GIDEON GRAVES could both agree on.

[break][break] His knuckles brushed over the wild Starmie's broken jewel, before glancing back as Gideon offered him the supplies. Deftly, Ollie grabbed what he needed and began quickly providing an emergency repair. One might think that he had the same magical touch as his sister; however, his was by no means a natural gift. It was one cultivated through years of fieldwork, through dedication and passion.

[break][break]When all was said and done, the Starmie emitted a joyful sound before twirling in the water. It gave a grateful wave to Ollie before vanishing back into the depths of the submerged shore.

[break][break] "All in a day's work," he chuckled, standing up. "Thanks for your help, Gids."

GIDEON GRAVES watched as the STARMIE twirled in the water, momentarily uplifted by the sight. This was what he came here to do. It was have been a small act, but it made a difference, little by little. [break][break]

"Of course," The professor assured, packing up the extra supplies back in his bag until they were needed again. "I think I make quite the adept sidekick, if I do say so myself." [break][break]

He smiled then, a small, teasing twinkle in his eye.

"And if I say so myself," Ollie said, stepping closer to the professor. He grinned. "I would have to readily agree."

[break][break] There was something contagious about the way that Gideon looked at him then, that made him want to kiss him right on the mouth.

[break][break] But memories of a previous conversation rose to the surface, and Ollie thought better of it. Instead, he stepped around the professor, leading the way to the next corridor. After all, there were always pokemon that were in need of saving.

[break][break] And as long as GIDEON GRAVES was here with him, Ollie was going to make sure to enjoy the time that they had together.
