Yumi glanced around the main living space of her apartment, the one she had once shared with Mei Liu. Ahead of her departure to Kalos, Mei had packed away most of her things, leaving only what she didn't need to bring with her. Awkward, empty spaces now pockmarked the apartment, filling Yumi with a sense of unease. [break][break]

She had to leave, too. [break][break]

"Thanks for coming by to help me pack," she said to Hitoshi Inoue. They stood surrounded by cardboard boxes, most of them empty. "The movers will come by next week to take care of the furniture and other large items, but I want to handle the small stuff myself." [break][break]

She couldn't trust strangers with her more precious belongings, which was why she'd asked for her oldest friend's assistance that day.

He already misses Mei Liu. She beheld his tears, which he did not even know he could shed. Something in his heart hurts as he realizes there wasn’t even a goodbye. Such was the price demanded by his independence and growing stake in Rocket’s fate.[break]
He’ll miss coming to this apartment. Slateport is a vibrant place and the view is to die for. Somewhere inside, there is recognition that the thought is a selfish weed growing on his heart. After all, how can he demand the right to his own metamorphosis and deny Yumi hers?[break]
“Any time.” Says the loyal one with a grin. His eyes pick up on patterns easy enough and already he begins sorting things into boxes. “Think you’ve got more stuff fer these l’il boxes than I’ve ever owned.” He laughs, as is his way, not thinking much of the words. His fingers betray him, pawing at the scarf she gave him so long ago. Old as it is, the only signs of decay are little cuts and burns from battle.[break]
“I’m gonna miss Mei. She reminded me of my mom a l’il.”

At Hitoshi's glib comment about her possessions, Yumi paused to glance around at everything. She didn't consider herself a hoarder by any means, but she was materialistic. Beautiful paintings hung on her walls, while unique art pieces decorated her shelves and tables. [break][break]

"When we first got here, we came with nothing but a couple of suitcases," she said, her voice heavy with nostalgia. "I really collected all this stuff in such a short time, didn't I?" [break][break]

Memories of their arrival to Hoenn came hand-in-hand with Mei Liu. Her advertisement for a roommate was an immediate opportunity for Yumi to secure a roof, bed, and warm meals. The friendship that followed had been wholly unexpected but not unwanted. [break][break]

"I'm going to miss her, too, but I don't begrudge her leaving. She's going to have the time of her life traveling through Kalos." [break][break]

Mention of Hitoshi's mother, however, stilled Yumi's hands once more. She looked over at him, eyebrows raised. [break][break]

"You've mentioned your mom a few times, but you've never really talked about her. What was she like?"

“Maybe we can visit her in Kalos.” He suggests. Her friend has seen too much to think it’s more than a fanciful idea, one of those notions that titillate the mind in theory but die in practice. It’s an idea that gives him solace for a moment, distracts him from war and from thoughts of the past.[break][break]
“I’unno.” Is the sad summary of his mother, given to Yumi. As he speaks the word, it is recognized as useless. So, for her, and for himself, he pulls out a mental spade and digs through old dirt unturned for a decade and change.[break][break]
“She smelled nice. Loved readin’. Romance books, I think. She talked about this guy or that ‘un from her books. Complained ‘bout why none of her Johns could look like the guys in the books.” What he realizes the more he talks is a thought best left uncovered. He misses her. He loved her. He wished he could have made her smile.[break][break]
“She didn’t like me much, on account of me bein’ so violent n’ all.” He says it with a straight face as he packs. He speaks of violence with a detached voice, the same way he always does. Only one thing, in the long time their lives have been entwined, has ever provoked him to violence without an explicit or implicit order: someone insulting Yumi. Yet all the same, he speaks that quiet indictment of his own nature and keeps up the effort of packing.

A parent's dislike of her child was not an uncommon sentiment to Yumi. She had witnessed it often when her cousin Sen Hasegawa fucked up over the years; his father and their grandfather had always been quick to express disdain. [break][break]

When she was young, it had never occurred to her that she could ever be the target of such feelings, but her family had proved her wrong. So when Hitoshi revealed that his own mother didn't like him, Yumi felt a pang of sympathy in her chest. [break][break]

"So what happened to her?" she asked, keeping her hands busy with packing up a smaller box. "I don't think you've ever left to go see her since you found employment with my family. Is she still alive?"

“I…” He stumbles as he reaches the edge of a hole in his heart. Before her question, he never knew it was there. On the streets, there was no time to dwell on where his mother might have gone. When he found himself taken in by the Hasegawa and shaped into a hellhound, he simply ceased to think about her at all.[break]
“…dunno.” White knuckles clench at the box, a strong grip pressing into an edge hard enough that something threatens to rip.[break]
“One of the girls she worked with told me she’d left, and they told me to go away, too.” There was no ceremony to it, he remembers. “I looked everywhere fer her, all over Goldenrod. Think I fell asleep in a trash can that first night.”

Sensing the tension in Hitoshi's emotions, Yumi grew still. She watched him from across the room, observing his body language, listening to his tone of voice. Limbs and words carried the subtle mark of a painful unmooring. [break][break]

"And you never saw or heard from her again," Yumi observed quietly, guessing at the outcome of such a tragic tale. [break][break]

Maybe his mother found an opportunity for a better life with one of her clients. Or maybe she'd been trafficked, or kidnapped, or killed. Either way, Yumi felt there was no point mulling on the possibilities, least of all out loud. [break][break]

"What was her name?"

Her words rouse guilt in him, such guilt that he might cry. His mother's was the first in a long line of names that fog in his mind like glass when a room grows too cold too soon. Her face he can see, dark-haired and beautiful in a plain handsome way compared to Yumi's high beauty. Her voice he can remember, so often laced with admonishment. He remembers others, unknown men who died for him in Galar that he might see Yumi again. He remembers the rookie, Brownie, Blondie, even Senpai, so many people he cares for who he could not name were the god-general to try and torture them out of him.[break]
His head dips low in shame, focused on his little box.[break]
"I can't remember." No great liar, his shame is apparent in the sudden way the third syllable of the phrase catches in his throat. His shoulders slump, and he keeps on his task, like it might assuage his guilt.

Perhaps Yumi had trespassed too far over the line. Pursing her lips, she traced the guilty slope of Hitoshi's shoulders with indigo eyes before averting her gaze entirely. [break][break]

"Sorry. It was a long time ago, so of course you don't remember." [break][break]

She resumed packing her box, filling it to the brim and taping it shut. The temptation to move on from the topic was great, but since he was the one who'd brought it up, she'd let him be the one to change it. [break][break]

Yumi had long grown used to the stretches of silence that occasionally filled the space between them.

The silence isn’t uncomfortable. Not exactly. There’s a sort of ease to the task. His mind slips from guilt and forgotten faces onto the task at hand. Somewhere in the middle of his third box, without even turning to look, he bares a bit of his soul.[break]
“Sometimes, I wish I’d been born a Hasegawa.” His melancholy is usually a bombastic thing, but not now. It’s a man’s sadness, held in the eyes and the low rumble of confession. “Not fer money or clout or none’a that. Just…wouldda been fun, bein’ yer brother.”

Yumi paused at Hitoshi's confession, just long enough to let the impact of his words sweep over her. Then she resumed packing, taping up a box and labeling its contents with a marker. [break][break]

"It wouldn't have been fun," she corrected, her tone matter-of-fact. "You would have been born with expectations that would have pitted us against each other, even if you were the younger sibling. We might have despised one another." [break][break]

Raising her head, she gazed out the nearest window in the direction of Johto. [break][break]

"And if you were the same as you are now," violent, simple-minded, and struggling with names, "they would have hated you and treated you like shit. You saw how they treated Sen." [break][break]

Abused for his failure to live up to their high standards. [break][break]

Yumi shook her head and glanced at Hitoshi as she picked up another empty box. "I prefer that we met and got to know each other the way we did. That was fun. We were allowed to be happy kids."

Before his here and now, before Hoenn, he did not know hatred. His only taste of the stuff was in Galar, when someone dared to mock Yumi when her dog’s fangs were on their throat. This place has taught him that she is right, and that to dwell upon the past and what might have been will only hurt them both.[break]
“I’m sorry you had t’go through all that, Yumi.” He says those words as if they change anything, like her struggles did not forge her into something as radiant as the sun.
So, instead of dwelling on the point, he turns to her, smiling once more. There’s mischief in the smile, a brilliance that was there when they were young and he was about to propose some scheme to kill an afternoon.[break]
“Speakin’ of fun stuff, and us bein’ happy kids…I found a real good arcade the other day. Not too far from here. Once we’re done packin’, it’d be my great honor ta trounce ya at Street Brawler.”

The suggestion came unexpectedly. They hadn't gone to an arcade in years, not since Yumi graduated from Wyndon University and started actively participating in her family's business. There had simply been no time for childish leisure. [break][break]

But there, in Hoenn? She'd been busy—they both had—but no one there could judge them for childishness. [break][break]

"Why not?" Yumi said with a laugh, her eyes sparkling with mirth. "But if we play Street Brawler, then we also have to play Dance Rush. And you can bet I'll trounce you at that."
