Far above them glow the alien lights of angels, distant as star. All around them stretches an expanse of bare, open darkness. Air fills their lungs, but Pokemon swim about as if floating in water. This place, like all places beyond the rifts, plays by its own rules.[break][break]
Navy is thankful for his sygna suit, a miracle of modern technological innovation. It affords him the luxury of breathing easy in this place not meant for his kind. Cool gunmetal eyes find his partner for this expedition and he wishes he could give her the suit. Without one, breathing is difficult. He remembers the pressure on his chest more than anything, that feeling that every breath was strained. Maybe she’s used to it, having gone on a voyage to the stars.[break][break]
“Fair warning, this place sucks.” Dewford’s sheriff speaks with his usual eloquence. “But there’s plenty of secrets down here for someone with the eyes to find them.” They stand on the precipice of one such secret. The Quaestor Lucis sits high above them like a great beached Wailord. Here be monsters. Here be answers. Perhaps, together, they can find them.[break][break]

phoebe's head is craned up towards the sky, her eyes reflecting back the false angels of another world with unrestrained wonder. a whole new world to explore, secrets of life tingling at her fingertips. who couldn't fall in love with a place like this?[break][break]

navy's words draw her head down. the experienced cosmonaut is breathing easy, likely due to her many years in a fighter jet—in fact, she already pre-breathed prior to this expedition, and she shows no noticeable signs of struggle. she feels the pressure on her chest, and she feels the slight struggle of her lungs, but it feels almost like home to her. instead, there's a rather wide smile on her face. she's absolutely brimming with excitement, the visage of a woman in love with the many sights of the world available to her. "we're gonna find all of the secrets," phoebe enthuses, meeting navy's eyes. "and don't worry about me in a fight. military training."[break][break]

phoebe extends her finger upwards, and she points to the carcass of a ship floating overhead, the quaestor lucis. "now, how do we get up there?"[break][break]

His answer is to kick off the ground. All laws of physics dictate that he should stay fixed to the ground. Eternatus, great sleeping Skeleton Gigantic, does not care for human law. Navy rises, and swims through the air.[break][break]
“Can’t say I’ve ever been to space, so I dunno how it compares to bein’ in zero gravity, but this is just about the only thing fun you get to do here.” Navy kicks up, swimming up empty air as if making a lap around a swimming pool. The ship is massive, but the deck is not hard to reach given the quirks of this space.[break][break]
“If things get hairy, and they’re gonna get hairy, we bail. We’ve got plenty of time to explore this place to our heart’s content, especially since you can breathe better down here than most folk.”[break][break]
Arceus, she’s breathing better than me in my suit.[break][break]
With that said, he starts swimming up in earnest, expecting the cosmonaut to take to this like a fish to water.[break][break]
What waits above is just a ship’s deck. Wide, well made with material at least partially foreign to the earth, but still just a ship. Only old bloodstains and the beginnings of rust hint that anything is off. Many doors lead below, down into the belly of the beast.[break][break]
“You’ll probably get to say you’ve punched an alien before the day’s out. Happened to me my first time here.”

phoebe's eyes sparkle as she watches navy gently push off into the air. yeah, she had imagined as much.[break][break]

gently, the cosmonaut does the same, gliding up in a similar fashion. "not too different," she affirms with a nod as she surveys the space around her. "like swimming without resistance. whatever atmosphere exists here is not very dense, but just dense enough to push through if you move enough. it helps that gravity is not very strong."[break][break]

the mention of potential danger gives the woman pause, and she nods, though her smile tightens. at this point, navy might as well be her commanding officer, and she's nothing if not a good follower of instructions. it comes free with her history in the force. she offers him a thumbs up. "yessir," is her only response, followed immediately thereafter by a sudden burst of firm movement as she begins to traverse the strange world they've found themselves in.[break][break]

up, up, up they go, phoebe grunting and straining against the limits of her body. while breathing at rest had been fine, breathing into exertion is another story entirely. though not visibly struggling, she tires easily as ample oxygen fails to fuel her muscles. a typical side effect, and one that phoebe ignores in favor of finally reaching the deck of the ship. what awaits her is, of course, nothing special. what lives below, however, draws a star into her gaze. she looks earnestly into the darkness waiting ahead of them, though stifles a laugh at navy's advice.[break][break]

"damn, so you're an experienced alien puncher?" phoebe wonders aloud as she begins to inch closer to the door that leads into the belly of the beast. "lucky. ground control never let me do anything like that, even though i asked really nicely."[break][break]

with that, phoebe opens the door, eager to get this expedition under way.[break][break]

“I’d say I’m a journeyman.” His last joke before they step down into the ship proper.[break][break]
Now, they are confined. The freedom that came with open space is replaced by endless repetitions of the hallway. The Megalopolins are very close to human beings in all the ways that matter. Their society carries many of the same monomyths and conveniences. A bathroom, Navy rediscovers as he opens a door near the entrance, will still be just a bathroom.[break][break]
“…Arceus. Knew I should’ve brought an egg incubator.” Just inside, rising out of an old timey toilet complete with a long chain, is a clutch of eggs. They’re a sickly off-white just a few shades shy of registering as some gangrenous shade of green.[break][break]
“These’re Nihilego eggs. They’re getting bolder. Usually they don’t lay their eggs this close to the surface of the ship. If you wanna grab some tissue samples or somethin’ from one, be my guest. Otherwise I’m gonna do a controlled burn. The ship itself don’t catch fire easy. Get out here, Tiny.”[break][break]
In preparation for this controlled burn, he unclips a pokeball and releases a Pokemon both familiar and strange. Tiny is a Skarmory who, true to his name, is very small. Basic knowledge of Pokemon zoology would mark him as a juvenile bird that has yet to hit his growth spurt. He shines with blue light. Each feather-blade that allows him to take flight glows like the sword of an ancient king, promising victory.[break][break]
Tiny, oblivious of human boundaries, flies up to Phoebe and perches on her shoulder. He chirps a happy song, spreading his wings as if showing a shiny toy to a parent.

navy's exclamation draws phoebe back to where she came. boots clambering against the deck, the woman peeks past the opened door to peer into the bathroom, and there she finds glistening, sticky eggs superimposed atop an old-timey toilet. she cringes and falters. the clutch is primed to hatch, pulsating with shapes just beneath the amorphous, almost translucent shell, and the soft, squelching noises emanating therein makes phoebe's stomach churn. gross.[break][break]

even so, research is research. phoebe pulls her bag around to her front to search its contents for her sample collectors. "yeah, that's a good idea," she agrees.[break][break]

as she finally relinquishes a syringe from her bag, a truly undersized skarmory lands atop her shoulder, gleaming with latent energy and casting the cosmonaut's face in a stellar glow. phoebe's face immediately soars into an enchanted smile. "oh, aren't you just the cutest little research assistant?" she coos, gently running a finger along its head. "and mighty, too, if you'll be the one doing the burning!"[break][break]

with a laugh, phoebe ventures into the bathroom, and wastes no time in carefully piercing one egg's shell with the syringe's needle. drawing the cylinder up, the syringe fills with a sickly off-white liquid, almost green, until the syringe is around halfway full. with that, phoebe caps off the syringe and tucks it back into her bag, then straightens and completely exits the bathroom. she nods in navy's direction.[break][break]

"all done! go ahead and light it up."[break][break]

Tiny understands tone well enough to smile and nuzzle against her cheek, flying away to let Phoebe do her work. Once the sample has been collected, Navy looks up at the bird. There is no finer example he’s found of how extraordinary this region and its circumstances are than this bird.[break][break]
“Alright, Tiny. You heard the lady. Light ‘er up.” Tiny’s wings beat like the beginnings of a hurricane. Anyone who pays attention to Pokemon battling knows the motion is used to gather air, usually to send out in a great wave at their opponents. Flames conjured by light spontaneously light up just under the feathers, cascading into the room. The flames incinerate the eggs. Ghoulish screams fill the corridors of the ship as Nihilego yet unborn die within the eggs, never to see their world or any other.[break][break]
All that accompanies the death throes of unborn things is silence. They are left alone, able to continue their journey down into the ship replete with an excellent sample. Curiously, music that would not be out of place on an ocean liner a century ago seems to echo through the hallways. It sends a shiver down Navy’s spine, something in the back of his mind taking to the sound here like nails to a chalkboard.[break][break]
“Careful. We don’t really know what’s in here besides Nihilego.”
