“i got him patty.” he squeezed his cousin’s cold shoulder under the tarp. “i got him back for you.”[break][break]

the words wavered in a whimpering sob as he hit the windshield wipers. it rained hard that night, and his tears made it only more difficult to navigate a dark road.[break][break]

”remember paldea? remember the pink flamigos, and those little umbrellas in the margaritas? what the fuck, pat. what the fuck!”[break][break]

he swerved and yelped as the car jumped, spitting mud and rocks before he righted it with a lurch of his heart. ”holy shit.”[break][break]

eventually, after what had felt like the longest drive of his young life, desmond parked on a dock with several vessels tied up. got out, looked around, and then began dragging the stiff body of fifteen-year-old patrick sloane towards his uncle’s motorboat.[break][break][break]

the voice of a stranger nearly made him jump out of his skin. he stumbled in the boat, heart racing. a pokeball fell beneath the seat where he’d been setting down the corpse he’d dragged aboard.[break][break]

frantic, he pulled an empty pistol at the dark suit approaching on the dock. sharp leather shoes gleamed in the speckled moonlight through the rain. the ghost over his shoulder made the man's presence even more menacing.[break][break]

too menacing, desmond realized, to be law enforcement. no, he knew these people. had seen them here and there growing up, when they'd appeared to speak with his father or his uncle.[break][break]

the gun lowered. his chest heaved like someone who’d been outrunning the hounds of hades.[break][break]

hero? savior. it did not seem so. not for him, at least. dmitri seemed a predator that stalked closer through the dark, and desmond found himself freezing up more and more with every step that brought the imposing man and his dusknoir closer.[break][break]

the barrel of the gun in desmond’s hand was easy to force downward. it shook, the teen’s arms weak from the weight he’d been dragging around all night, and the paralyzing fear that coursed through him.[break][break]

how did he know? there was no blood, but maybe he’d missed something.[break][break]

[break][break] the man leans closer, fingers brushing over the other man’s cheek before tucking a stray strand of hair behind his ear — a gesture as tender as it is mocking.

[break][break] "mr. police officer," he sneers, voice slipping into a high-pitched falsetto, dripping with faux innocence. he begins to circle desmond sloane, slow and predatory, like a vulture closing in on it's prey. hands are thrown into the air, mocking in gesture. "i don't know how it happened! it was an act of passion - an act of love! you have to understand! i was under duress!"
